I politely suggested they move to allow me in, as otherwise it would not turn out too well for them. After many evils they grudgingly moved.

Stuff reports “Just over half of New Zealand households cut back on heating their homes in winter due to the cost, a survey of nearly 1300 householders by Credit Simple found”. And “Cold, damp houses are the culprit for New Zealand’s high rates of certain childhood respiratory diseases”. Link below.

Meantime it is all the fault of mean and greedy landlords and MBIE is to put together minimum standards for heating inter alia, but only for rentals, under the Healthy Homes Guarantee Act. The MBIE regulatory impact statement (link below) has this to say, noting that portable heaters will not do the trick –

There is a well-established, reputable body of international evidence about the public health impacts of indoor air quality and temperature, and the health benefits of providing effective heating, insulation and ventilation. There is also reputable evidence that many New Zealand homes have deficient heating, insulation and ventilation and that this deficiency cannot be addressed with portable heating devices.

It is notable that no mention is made in the RIS of tenants choosing not to heat their homes for financial reasons. Or opening windows for ventilation. Or not overcrowding their rentals – an important cause of dampness.

We have yet to see what minimum standards MBIE recommends to the government, but it is looking like a fair bet that the responsibility and cost will sit squarely on the landlord’s shoulders. I guess there will be a few landlords left, most collecting some serious rent increases due to increased costs and high demand.

  In most cases its an issue of priorities and knowing what is the best to use.
  
  eg. heated towel rails are the most inefficient use of power. They are pointless and very expensive to run. Yet I know people that keep their towel rails on 24/7 and then wonder why their power bill is so high.
  
  A towel that is properly aired and dried, and replaced every couple of days, is better .
  
  People also don’t understand the need for ventilation and fresh air. They close every nook and crevice in their house for 4-6 months of winter and then wonder why they are living in a damp, mould-infested property. Houses need to be ventilated. Windows need to be opened to allow fresh air to circulate.
  
  And closing curtains in the evening. Its pretty simple – yet I see peoples houses lit up like Christmas trees all night long with their blinds/curtains thrown wide open – and they wonder why their house is cold.

    All the lights in my house happen to be downlights. I had them all replaced with LED lights that use almost no electricity.
    Also put in a heat pump which is very economical.
    Having a sunny & sheltered aspect is a bonus.
    Trouble is these things require a few grand initial outlay that a lot of people don’t have.

      Agree with the Heat Pumps, installed a few in my place and as they both heat and cool they are brilliant – and pretty economical.
      
      Big user of power is typically hot water, a noticeable change when one teenager left to attend university !

      No worries about the initial outlay. Just sell up and rent, and the landlord will pay up to provide cheaper electricity via heat pumps, and airflow via an installed ventilation system.
      
      Maybe these will not be the minimum requirements in the new standards MBIE is putting together. But if the idea is for landlords to pay for 18 degree temp and they say the research shows portable heaters won’t cut it then the obvious answer is heat pumps (yes multiple units in many cases) or perhaps high output fixed panel heaters throughout.
      
      And don’t forget power points and extra circuits, plus ongoing sparky maintenance if PCU connections.
      
      The current requirement is for a fireplace or other approved form of heating in the living room. What is approved? Depends on the council, so basically nobody knows. But a power point or two with tenant or owner providing their own heater has been fine since 1947 at least (Housing Improvement Regulations 1947).

    Coal though isn’t a very good domestic fuel, and open fireplaces using a smoky and polluting fuel aren’t a great idea.
    
    Unfortunately power costs to generate and deliver (and maintain). All future expansion of our generation capacity will be relatively expensive so power is not going to get much cheaper.

  Labour, in the guise of Grant Robertson doesn’t think beneficiaries need to bother with any heating until at least July. He so proudly boasts of the winter heating scheme he has put in but payments don’t start until 1 July. I guess he never bother to look at the weather records or he might have noticed that in many New Zealand cities June is the coldest month of the year, and May is colder than September, when the payment stops.
  I guess Grant usually has a little jaunt to the tropics during the Parliamentary Winter breaks.

RNZ’s socialist infested newsroom just cannot face being honest when it comes to Venezeula.

Yesterday’s 4pm news broadcast made the comment that Venezuela’s problems are caused by low oil prices and a USA sanctions.

The last point was, I suppose, intended to blame Trump even though the order was put in place by Obama in 2015. Those sanctions only apply to seven people – not the nation as a whole. How do they hurt the country?

Low oil prices are not the problem. High oil prices have just helped to mask the problems. The benefits of periods of high oil were squandered on partying up, rather than on investment in long term societal change. That’s low IQ behaviour for you: don’t worry about the future just piss it up when you get the chance.

Perhaps, like poor school performance, we should blame RNZ’s failings on poverdee in the broadcasting sector. If we increase the new NZ On Air koha from $38 million to $50 million I’m sure they’ll be able to get the news right.

  Casey & other councillors have complained that they can’t read an original copy of the report without staff from Goofy’s office standing over them.

    I have no idea what happened after that but you can be sure he never actually served time.
    
    Jefferson Davis, who was the President of the Confederacy was locked up for 2 years after the Civil War, although he was never actually charged with any crime. Does he count?

      About half the price of petrol is made up of tax, excise,ETS & GST.
      The rest is oil, refining etc with various petrol relating industries profiting along the way.
      These characters can charge whatever they like and to a degree say what they like to justify themselves.
      Under our capitalist system as long as the various rival companies don’t collude over prices there is little the government can do short of fixing prices.
      That’s fine for about two weeks until circumstances change and the pressure is on for the government to alter the base prices either up or down.
      NZ has been through all this sort of socialism in the not to distant past.

Listening to the little git called Parker praising Catastrophe Cindy for sorting out a possible FTA with the EC when she was gallivanting recently.
France will block our main Dairy Exports for a starter.
For information such an agreement has been under discussion even before Parker rorted people in Dunedin and that is over ten years ago.
The EC now want to get in before the UK after Brexit with both Australia and New Zealand.
It may well be a joint exercise between both countries as it is so small for the EC.

  France blocking dairy exports…not a problem that will exist when real negotiations begin, in a couple of years, The cattle cull will mean we no longer have a “dairy industry”.

  No stadium in Auckland and give aways to the Islands/ Swedish embassy, would drop even more to the bottom line.

      The first rule agreed to by both parties was, that there could be NO negotiations or agreements entered into before Brexit was complete!!
      Because
      Until the completion of Brexit, both parties are still members of the EU and come under the trade negotiation framework of the EU.

    But RW Capitalist it interesting watching from so far away how so many pressures are coming to bare on the NZ economy. The effects of M.Bovis on dairy export volumes will hinder any prospect market expansion even to the extent of struggling to meet current demands. Steadily rising crude prices being paid for with the devalued dollar is already pushing pump prices well ahead of the extra tax grab. Nobody can argue the trickledown impact that fuel prices have on all food, goods and services hastening the increase of inflation leading to higher interest rates.
    Thus the COL need a smoke screen of “good” stuff like a trade deal and a trade deal there topped of with a toff visit on top. Then there has been the constant fall-back of the “baby” as the crowd goes “oh the beautiful little baby”. Must channel those feelz.

Caught a shuttle from Christchurch Airport the other night and watched with interest as the driver attempted unsuccessfully to navigate the myriad of narrowed, blocked off, no right turn/ no left turn/ no entry streets to drop off a passenger at a central city hotel. In the end he gave up and took me home first, intending to have another go after depositing me.

These impenetrable inner city Christchurch streets are not simply the result of ongoing repair work. They are the result of idiotic traffic/ street /city planners who, in the words of the shuttle driver, want to prevent anyone except cyclists and bus users from gaining entry to inner city Christchurch. Apart, that is, from the mythical inner city apartment and town house dwellers that the myopic Christchurch City Council believe are going to be living within the four avenues. There’s certainly little sign of these creatures as yet. They only ever make an appearance on the glossy concept drawings the planners love to produce.

If anyone is interested in seeing just how nonsensical it all is come visit and see the idiocy for youselves. There are a good few laughs in it before the tears start to well! Inner city Christchurch is doomed.

  Whanganui is the same. The council is pandering to 100 cyclists and thumbing their nose at the 10,000 motorists. So much for their join pedestrian/cycle way in St Hill Street. I have not seen one Cyclist use it. They prefer to hold up traffic on the street.
  The council has temporarily removed the. Traffic lights at a couple of intersections to put in new ones. The new temporary roundabouts have improved traffic flow 100%.

  Sorry to say, what you & the driver experienced the other night, is and will continue to be visited upon all the countries major centres. It is a two stage process, as follows:
  1. Make the city & urban shopping areas difficult to navigate by car. This past includes making roads one-way, use of bike lanes, making lanes for cars as congested as possible (by adding bus only lanes or making a car lane more crooked than a corrupt politician);
  2. Once car drivers have given up using town centres – pave over the road and turn it into a pedestrian mall.
  
  What these dumb planners have not connected, is that over time this practise has killed inner city retail areas & forced large scale retail to out of town malls e.g. Westgate, Albany, Botany & Manukau. In the UK, for more than a decade politicians have decried the demise of the high street & employed consultants etcetca. to tell them the blindingly obvious – high street retail has been changing/dying for 30 years & planners making pedestrian malls everywhere have hastened the death of city centres. E.g. if you as a store owner selling bulky furniture, are you going to be in Auck city centre or in an Albany where people can take away their purchases in their cars?

  Right Nukuleka could not believe what a disaster the “new” Christchurch has been turned into on the last home vacation. It as if they intent on creating problems where they had an enviable smooth traffic situation of the avenues circling the city and a good one way system inside that. Now the inner city is full of islands and deciduous trees that seem to favour the large leaf varieties that block drainage faster than any they can be cleared. In fact most only get cleared when it floods as we have seen in so many regions after recent storms. We’ve all seen the footage of the council worker standing in 2 feet of water trying to unblock the drain. Meanwhile the local arts centre is high and dry.

Airport staff in Gothenburg have been told how to respond in such circumstances, said Katarina Idegard, who is in charge of tackling honour-based violence in Sweden’s second biggest city.

There is an article in the NZ Herald Business section, The Future is Electrifying, which is hard to take seriously. It refers to a report by Stakeholder Stategies commissioned by Transpower, but not publicly available. One of Stakeholder Strategies partners is David Cunliffe. So presumably Stakeholder Strategies is very influential with the current Labour led government.

Anyway one of their predictions is that electric vehicles will make up 40% of the 3 million vehicle fleet by 2030 and 85% by 2050. Presumably the 40% by 2030 is a high side figure.

In reality the 2030 figure of 40% is absurd. It implies that NZ will import 110,000 electric vehicles each year (as an average) for the next 11 years. Presumably a lot more in the late 2020’s and fewer in the next few years. At least half of all NZ light vehicles imports are second hand, typically at least 5 years old, and for next few years virtually the only second hand electric vehicles will be Nissan Leafs. We are obviously going to import the entire world production of second hand Nissan Leafs for the next five years!

Even the 2050 figure of 85% is ambitious given that the NZ vehicle fleet has an average age of 12 years, which means half the fleet is older. There is still a huge number of 20 year old cars on our roads. Perhaps 50% electric might be attainable by 2050.

I would be surprised if even 10% of the vehicle fleet is electric by 2030.That is still 300,000 vehicles, or around 30,000 imports per year.

If the government is basing its policies (climate change being this government’s nuclear moment) on such poor research, we are in for some huge white elephant projects, and some extreme mandatory policies around car ownership.

  Looked at tesla as an option for my latest purchase; drove a couple as well.
  
  Their build quality is on a par with Korea when they first started building vehicles. Its totally shit. Parts are almost impossible to get here in UnZud, and as for charging, forget it – long runs especially. Insane mode is a cool quirk, but for my money, give me launch control and the roar / whine / howl of a V8 any day. And yes, my petrol bill is horrendous 😛

      BMW sold Rover to Ford but kept the Mini marque and Ford sold Rover to Tata an Indian company who have kept the Land Rover Marque in production. They also own Jaguar which they also aquired from Ford
      
      So there you go – the iconic English car brands are now Indian owned except for the Mini which is German

  About 6 weeks ago I put figures on KB that showed for all the petrol power vehicles to be replaced by electric vehicles would require our electricity generation capacity to be increased by 75% of the current capacity ( from approx 42,000GWH/yr to 75,000 GWH/yr ). This is based on data on the MIBE website.
  Given the Greens and Labour do not want any more dams, they do not like nuclear, they do not like coal fired power stations and now they do not want any more O&G exploration they will never achieve their fanciful dream.
  Even to have a fraction of the fleet converted would require a significant increase in generation.
  (BTW to replace all liquid fuels used in transport except aviation fuel would require 175% increase in generation)

    Ross, interestingly I was at a wider family event and my uncle (a senior power company exec) claimed that his company did a closed door crisis simulation where a major auto maker came out tomorrow with a car like a Suzuki swift that had an electric battery that could last a week+ on one charge etc and cost only $20-25k. As you would expect, there simply isn’t enough capacity in NZ and it is too far from where it is needed. Their conclusion was that there is no purely electric technology yet to enable a car to tow a trailer/boat up a steep hill, for the technology to be adopted by people with disposable income.

      A couple of other things Harkman.
      Shaw came out recently saying we should put a tax on petrol powered cars to help reduce the cost of electric cars (subsidies) and the AA thought it was good idea –bubble thinking in Wellington. To me all this would mean is poorer people, those that buy second hand cars, would be subsidising the rich and also the electric car manufacturers.
      
      I read a piece on an Aussie website that promotes solar panels on homes. They had worked out that a home with the average number of panels could generate enough power each day(in sunny Aussie) to charge a car for one days average use. They were honest enough to acknowledge most homes have two cars.       Jonathan Young was questioning Megan Woods, stating that our power generation would have to double (unfortunately I missed the earlier part of the discussion) . Wood prattled on about that this is what the transition is all about and it was all being planned.

      As has been previously pointed out, there are a number of “coincidences” around the Huntly incident that some might consider defy the odds. So a muslim PR professional returning from a muslim conference on promoting Islam in New Zealand films herself and her friends being harassed by a drunken woman in a public toilet. The Police District Commander for Huntly happens to be New Zealand’s highest ranked muslim police officer. The alleged perpetrator is very quickly arrested (much more quickly than the Labour Youth camp alleged sex offender for example) and reportedly tells the court (under oath?) her mother is a muslim? Why would you give any Portfollio in Government to Andrew Little as he has fucked up in several positions in and out of Parliament.His record shows he led the the largest decline in membership of the union when CEO, couldn’t win the seat of New Plymouth which then was a safe Labour seat, became Leader of the Labour Party and was a dismal failure and now is about to put lives in danger in reducing the prison population and safety regulations by releasing them into state housing areas that could be controlled by gangs in many places in NZ.

I heard on RNZ this morning that the Government wants to hold a referendum on legalising marijuanah ASAP. Simon Bridges should therefore be vocal about having the referendum tacked on to the next General Election as Labour want it done and dusted by then. Labour know this is controversial and don’t want this to be the key election battle.

  In Stuff, Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi associate professor Mera Lee-Penehira says:
  
  “Moko kauae is the sole right of Maori women. Not only is it ‘okay’ to make a race-based decision in applying moko kauae, but it is a ‘requirement’.”
  
  Penehira is lecturer at what is a Maori version of a university, with campuses in Whakatane, Auckland, and Northland. They offer bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph. D. programmes.
  
  Our traditional universities have also diversified into Maori customs. They are offering degrees in kapihaka and Maori oral history.
  
  Perhaps Maori are right: we do need more segregation in NZ. Let the term “moko” be reserved for tattoos on Maori faces, and let Maori tertiary education stop giving Western style bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph. D. Degrees. Let them use some Maori name for these qualifications.
  
  It is also time for our traditional universities to stay in their Western tradition, and leave kapihaka and oral-history courses to the wananga.

  There was a smallpox episode in NZ in 1913-1914.
  A Mormon missionary with smallpox attended a Northland hui and the disease started to spread through Maori communities.
  To deal with the spread authorities put restrictions on travel for some folk (just like Mycoplasma infected moo-cows) and offered vaccination.

    The problem is though Maggy that the restrictions weren’t just put on ‘folk’: they were put on Maori. Even if you weren’t infected and hadn’t been living in an infected area, you could be banned from the roads, from crossing bridges, and from taking a train because you were Maori. And Pakeha who came from infected districts could travel as they pleased. It was very difficult for Maori communities to get food and fuel during the epidemic, because their members could not visit towns to acquire these things.

      The NZ authorities a few years earlier were just as willing to slap a blanket ban on travel/entry of Chinese suspected of carrying smallpox.
      
      I have read Alison Day’s paper on the 1913 smallpox outbreak.

      It was a confusing time here in NZ.. with a mild form of the smallpox introduced…. The disease was mis- diagnosed as chicken-pox for weeks; many Europeans believed that the disease originated/was associated with unsanitary conditions.
      
      Yep, it was dealt with along racial lines… but again (in hindsight).. Europeans weren’t to know that their population carried some degree of immunity to this milder smallpox form and so the disease wasn’t showing up in their communities… Maori had no natural immunity and some populations had not been vaccinated.

The Papers Past archive contains scores of reports on the progress of the epidemic from contemporary newspapers. Here’s one, which the NZ Herald published in July 1913:

  A self-taught man, printer, journalist, strike leader, he went to prison in NZ and Australia for his beliefs.

US judge orders a 30-year-old man to move out of his parents’ house

A US judge has ordered 30-year-old Michael Rotondo to move out of his parents’ house near Syracuse in upstate New York, after they went to court to evict him.

Christina and Mark Rotondo said their son Michael did not pay rent or help around the house, and he had rejected offers from them to help him with the move. Mr Rotondo moved back home eight years ago after losing his job.

He sounds like a bludger – and looks like one too (see photo in linked article).

His parents took the case to the New York State Supreme Court after recent letters they wrote to their son, asking him to leave while offering money and other help, were ignored. They wrote five eviction letters over several months, informing Mr Rotondo he must vacate their home — but he argued in return that they had not given him enough notice.

After his court appearance, Mr Rotondo told journalists he would appeal the judge’s decision, saying he was not ready to leave home. He said while he lived under the same roof as his parents, he did not speak to them. According to Syracuse.com, he then returned to his parents’ house.

  I think Mallard got a fright when Paula walked out. Big Gerry had already taken him to task over his stupid ‘loss of Supps’ rulings and I think he’s worried that the Nats might go to a higher authority if push comes to shove. Mallard was noticeably tougher on Ministers answering questions for the remainder of QT with Parker, Mahuta, Hipkins and particularly Twyford copping Mallard’s ire.
  
  Where do the Nats go if they pursue a complaint against Mallard’s continuing bias? The Clerk of the House or even the GG?

While I understand her point, her actions today make her look childish. They are not going to win with Mallard, and whinging and moaning only makes them look weak.
It would be better be the better party, take a moral high ground, ask hard questions and listen in silence. It gives Mallard no opportunities to interfere.
It will unsettle the Government
And will give National a higher moral ground to attack from when the next election or inevitable scandal comes around.

Just read about the UK Labour Party’s “Women’s Officer”. He is a man who identifies as a woman on Wednesday nights. He must win the Crazy Socialist award this week.

Is a layman right in feeling uneasy about reporting of the case against Kapiti councillor David Scott?

A Wellington District Court jury yesterday (Wednesday) found Kapiti councillor Scott guilty of indecently assaulting a council employee.

Stuff tonight reports the case under a heading which includes the words, “what the David Scott jury did not get to hear”:

“Female staff at Kapiti Coast District Council were known to view councillor David Scott as a predator.”

Stuff goes on to refer in the report to the views on Scott held by two women council staff members:

“The second woman was at the door of a council event and greeting people with a peck on the cheek or a hongi. She heard Scott get in line and say, ‘I might as well get some of that,’ as he kissed her cheek.

“She had heard that he was a predator with younger staff when they were alone, she said.”

Stuff says the Crown asked Wellington District Court judge Denys Barry to allow the statements of the two women staff to be given in evidence.

The Stuff report says:

“Judge Barry disagreed with the Crown’s request saying it was loaded with illegitimate prejudice that were beyond the ability of judicial directions to focus the mind of jurors to approach this evidence as an analytic reasoning tool because the evidence itself was rife with innuendo, he said.”

My question is: if a judge refuses to allow statements to be included in evidence, can the media fairly – and safely – report those statements as they can other court proceedings?

The sisterhood throws its weight around in the London police – and costs it nearly a million pounds over the treatment of a senior male cop. He brought a case against the police alleging sex discrimination by her.

She is the same cop – Deputy Assistant Commissioner Maxine De Brunner – who has been placed under formal misconduct investigation after she asked for a massive deployment of officers and specialist units to entertain at the private Chinthurst School, where her son is a pupil, while Britain was on high terror alert.
