  The Norks have been dug in for 70 years as a client state/cats-paw of the PRC used to goad and annoy USA via its allies South Korea and Japan.
  
  Trump applied a whole lot of economic pressure instituting a variety of trade barriers, going after IP theft, and increasing military pressure and presence to China – shoring up support for Taiwan, possibly offering to help Japan, Korea and Taiwan improve their weapons systems and perhaps even quietly assisting with Nuclear weapons programs.
  
  There were no doubt a lot of back-channel threats to China regarding this stuff and further possible escalation, and as a no-face-lost and zero-cost concession China has agreed to make the Norks pull their head in

        Japan already revised the interpretation of its constitution in 2014. It did it on its own terms and Trump or any other foreign leader has little to do with it. The assumption that constitutional change relies on Trump’s approval is wrong headed.

  Oh my God you have blinkers on simon. Trump got China to put pressure on Kim to come to the table, maybe even threatening to completely cut off aid. The sanctions won’t be lifted until Kim shows some sense and allows inspections of his nuclear sites, or proof he has stopped making warheads. Kim has seen a President who means what he says, unlike Obama who was a Pentagon puppet. And finally North Korea is virtually bankrupt, so Trump has a huge negotiating weapon.

    Correction: Kim has seen a President who doesn’t mean what he says and often changes his views. He changed his views on China’s efforts to reign NK in, he also went from “rocket man” and “fire and fury” talk to agreeing to have high level diplomatic meetings with NK within weeks.
    
    Trump’s “skill” here is how he acts puts tyrants on edge. He quickly struck Syria with missiles twice for no genuine military advantage as-if to primarily let both Iran and North Korea (not to mention Russia) known that he wont sit by and let diplomacy crawl through at a slow pace. He uses his own erratic nature to force others to hasten their efforts towards diplomatic outcomes or haul them into line. This is how he’s conducted business forever – surprise people and then badger them into a deal with a short deadline.
    
    Even in the case of NK and China he said a number of times that China should be on board with sanctions/efforts and that they were working together. Then one day out of the blue he tweeted that China had failed, time to step in. In one move he both made China look impotent (even though they’re not – it was probably just to look strong to his own followers) and let Kim know he wont let the clock tick over like every previous administration. In a perverse way Trumps skitty nature and impatience is an effective way to put the fear into places like NK or Iran who have lived forever in the knowledge that the US is very reluctant to back up their words with missiles for basically anything short of acts of war.
    
    None of this means Trump deserves the Peace Prize. South and North Korea have achieved most of this by themselves and probably with a lot of nudging from China.

  Kim has been maneuvered into this position.
  Trump threatened him militarily.
  He replied with threats (missiles, bluster nuke tests)
  Trump imposed sanctions against him
  He went to China
  Trump threatened China with a trade war
  China imposed sanctions
  Russia are preoccupied in Syria, Trump is making sure it stays that way.
  This is chess
  Threaten, maneuver your opponent (with direct, indirect threats and bluffs) to the position that gives you the advantage, isolate him from his most powerful pieces then wait for the resignation or strike….check mate.
  Without Trump the South would never have had the power to bring this about, by itself.
  The Chinese and Russians, don’t want a war of any kind with the USA (economic or shooting)
  He has done (Kim) the smart thing and paused, now is he buying time, or is this peace?
  Trump is sitting there and saying (after the director of CIA’s secret meeting) I’ll meet if ALL my conditions are met.
  He is in absolute control of this situation.

        You seem to believe that the (so far) fruitless object of decades of US diplomacy and pressure was to secure a meeting between the respective leaders. That’s not an outcome that is sought, except by the North Koreans as a measure of international recognition. For the US, the outcome has to be removal or reduction of the grave threat that North Korea poses to American forces and American allies. That is why previous US presidents have refused to meet unless verifiable precondition were met – which they never were.
        
        Should Trump’s reversal of policy work, he will indeed deserve plaudits. At this stage, it is a bit premature to declare ‘peace in our time’.

  He did something unusual in international diplomacy – he engaged directly, publicly and loudly denounced North Korea’s leadership.
  
  They tried to bluster back, and when they failed they tried escalation. Only Trump escalated back – again an unusual move.
  
  North Korea ran out of options – either a backdown or a confrontation they’d lose. And they chose self-preservation.
  
  But nowadays you only get a Nobel peace prize for not being a US Republican.

Contrary to Trump’s rankings, Kim Jong-un is not defeated and desperate. He is confident and successful. The international efforts have not stopped him developing a nuclear deterrent. Obama failed in N.K., but Trump sure as hell hasn’t fixed it.

  Tas the war is over, North Korea has abandoned it’s nuclear program, the two countries are currently set to soon be on a path to peacefull reunification.
  
  I know advocating warmongering is popular and all, but we don’t need a WW3 where 0.5% of the western population (as in previous wars) or more dies. We just don’t. And the two Koreas do not want to be at the center of that war either. So take your war rhetoric and keep it to yourself.
  
  If we can solve this diplomatically, and the peace agreement is that, then that is a good thing, and you may not like Trump, but it isn’t a reason to deny they Peace Deal is 99% likely happening.

    Your first sentence contains three misrepresentations of the current situation.
    The war is not over.
    NK has not abandoned it’s nuclear programme.
    There is no indication that either country wants reunification.
    
    BTW
    The key to all this – denuclearization of the North – has been further advanced than this previously, only for it all to fizzle out.

        The old “Anna Chennault was a go-between between Nixon and South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu counselling the latter to hold out for a better deal” conspiracy theory. Was going to refer to it myself first time, but thought I’d give you the pleasure.
        
        And it was the post-Watergate Congress that refused to send military assistance to the RVN, as they were allowed to according to the 1973 peace accords that meant the nation fell in 1975. And what makes you think LBJ, who more than anyone blundered and escalated American involvement would have got a even got a deal in 1968, let alone a good one?
        
        The North Vietnamese weren’t going to sign in 1968.

        No matter what Kissinger’s and Nixon’s performance over Vietnam, they didn’t start the thing, and they weren’t the ones who ultimately wanted to prolong it. And they couldn’t just throw their South Vietnamese ally under the bus. But what they did achieve, even before the 1973 Paris Peace Accord, was Vietnamisation of the war and American disengagement ahead of schedule. Not “hard on” inducing, but those are tangible achievements they achieved on their watch against an implacable enemy. Or have you forgotten that triangulation, detente and ping pong diplomacy also exerted pressure on North Vietnam that did not exist in 1968?
        
        And no, I wasn’t asking you to defend Johnson’s escalation. But you’re the one who thinks his judgement, which was so useless on Vietnam up to that point, was suddenly capable of negotiating a peace deal, much less a good one before the end of his term.
        
        Instead, in yet another blunder when it came to “driving/enticing the North Vietnamese to the negotiating table, once Johnson made the unexpected announcement on 31 March 1968 that he wasn’t going to run again in an effort to spend all his time on Vietnam , he made himself a lame duck…and the North Vietnamese were always going to wait him out.

        I’d agree that all of them up to Nixon, from Truman on, blundered. That’s the conclusion of the Pentagon Papers. And American domestic politics, fed by the likes of Nixon during his early days, including the line that “the Democrats lost China” (so they weren’t going to lose Vietnam on their watch) didn’t help.
        
        But no, short of a bug out (which the likes of RFK and the more hard core peace lobby wanted), it’s difficult to conceive of what could have been done differently by any POTUS from 1969 to 1973 to effect a better outcome than what they got at Paris. Kissinger blundered in October 1972 with his premature “peace is at hand” announcement. And Nixon’s paranoia over the leaking of the Pentagon Papers lead directly to Watergate, so that was sure incompetence of the unintended consequences variety!

        Yeah, over-run at the time by the NVA and Viet Cong, and from whence they were launching attacks over the border. As one Nixon apologist noted at the time, criticising Nixon for bombing Cambodia and Laos was like denouncing the Allied invasion of Nazi-occupied Holland.
        
        Got anything else? I always liked Niall Ferguson’s assessment of Christopher Hitchens’ denouncement of Henry Kissenger as a war criminal – “it’s difficult to discern, when faced with similar sets of circumstances, how what Kissenger did that was any different from any other American Secretary of State since Dulles”. Same applies to Nixon as POTUS.

        As I recall it, you raised the 1973 Paris Peace accords. And if you were altiora and the topic was the English Civil War I would be worried. Still butt hurt by that exchange, especially as Parliament had no constitutional precedent to interfere in the King’s conduct of foreign affairs (you know, like Nixon in Cambodia, “when the President does it, it’s not illegal), even if they suspected with good reason Charles I was looking to make alliances with Catholic foreign powers to wage war on the Dutch Protestants. ?

    Holly Rogers: Don’t be fooled by some warm fuzzy ceremony. Of course discussions are good, but there is zero evidence that North Korea is changing course. More fool Trump if he is taken by Kim Jong-un’s sudden bout of diplomacy.
    
    It plays into Trump’s narrative to believe that North Korea are scared and defeated, but there is no evidence for that. Their behavior is more consistent with their nuclear and missile programs being complete. Now that they have achieved their goals, they are interested in negotiations to remove sanctions.
    
    Put it this way: what’s a more plausible explanation for their testing halt? A sudden and unexplained u-turn on a policy that they have fought to advance for years in the face of strong global opposition. Or the testing is complete.

      The reason for their testing halt is quite prosaic – their testing site is fucked and won’t support any more tests, and they’ve run out of money for the time being. That’s it plain and simple. It probably suits them fine for lots of people to think that Trump’s bellicosity had something to do with it.
      
      People of a cynical disposition might wonder whether in fact the revelation last week from Chinese scientists, that the NK test site was fucked, had something to do Kim’s behaviour. It seems like an interesting coincidence of timing that his PR stunt happened just hours after the Chinese announcement. It’s almost as if Kim was trying the western political trick of trying to bury bad news with something more high profile. If so, it appears to have worked judging from the number of commentators who don’t know about it.

While I am no fan of Trump, I have to admire and acknowledge that his particular brand of brinksmanship has had quite an effect.

As history looks more kindly on Reagan and his role in bringing down the Berlin Wall and German Reunification, perhaps Trump’s plain spoken rhetoric has succeeded where 65 years of soft diplomacy has failed.

Trump has been awesome. Obama said Isis will be a problem for generations. Trump comes in, frees up the generals rules of engagement and demands they seek victory. Result, Isis no longer has a caliphate, heading towards defeat in Syria and Iraq.
Obama says Trump’s biggest problem will be North Korea. Trump tells Kim Jong Un that if he attacks the USA or one of its allies he will release fire and fury that the world has never seen before.
NK is now at the negotiating table in an unprecedented way.

It’s called peace through strength. And it came through Trump.

  Must be pretty tough deciding who to arm and who to bomb in the Middle East and Asia. I don’t envy them their difficult choices.

    They don’t decide. The Israel lobby does.
    
    Yet Trump manages to do a better job of standing by Israel, while not starting or escalating wars.
    
    Maybe he will be the one who can stop the Palestinians lobbing bombs and rockets at Israel, and in turn stop Israel pinching more land? If they can just stop killing each other they might be able to nut out a long term solution among themselves.
