  The thing I use Twitter for is the informal network of teachers and researchers who share ideas, resources, information and interesting academic papers to read.
  It has been incredibly useful as a peer to peer professional development tool and I’ve learnt a lot from it.
  
  I accept that occasionally I will see pictures of people’s dinners and inane details of lives that don’t interest me, but the pluses outweigh the negatives.
  
  Edited to add: It’s also quite a good way of contacting companies directly to get issues resolved – Lightbox responded almost instantly via Twitter, whereas the email address took days.

Here’s a different take on the Trump presidency from Scott Adams blog (yes, that Scott Adams) – The Demolition President.

President Trump has delivered on a number of promises for his base. But there was an impressive amount of breakage along the way. You might say he President Trump did as much demolition as he did construction. The press is doing a good job of telling us what he accomplished in 2017. But they keep leaving out all the stuff he broke that probably needed to be broken. I’ll fix that for you here.

GOP – Trump broke the GOP and reconstructed it along his terms, successfully it seems.
DNC – The DNC has no charismatic leader, no game plan, and little money.
Clinton Dynasty – Done
Bush Dynasty – Done
Mainstream Media – The public learned that news coverage is based on bias as much as fact. …..

  If there were some debate, you wouldn’t need to visit the crank sites. You would find it on science sites provided for you by NASA, the Royal Society,
  National Academy of Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Physical Society, American Chemical Society etc etc etc.

      The methodology for adjustments is in the public domain. It is accepted throughout the scientific world and by other experts such as the American Statistical Association.
      
      No dataset is adjusted anywhere near as much as the satellite sets.
      
      But since you don’t understand much science, have a look at the NIWA 11-station series. 1K warming with no adjustments.

    Good to see Disaster Area getting the downticks he deserves for championing Wolff’s banned book. There’s a difference between free speech and sedition. Wolff as well as most US media outlets – WaPo, NYT, CNN – has crossed that line. Of course Trump is not going to stand for his book. By banning the book Trump will actually strike a blow for free speech, because he’ll improve the quality of discussion in the US. Without all the garbage that liberals like Wolff pump into the publishing and media ecosystem, Americans will have a better chance of understanding their country’s fight. He said the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management has identified 47 potential areas where industry companies can buy leases between 2019 and 2024, when the proposed period would begin and end.

    Perhaps not genetically disposed. Perhaps they just hang out with the wrong men and then just extrapolate to all men.
    
    Before the welfare state a woman would be inclined to look for a quality male (loyal, good provider etc). SHe wouldn’t waste her time with trash. There was then an incentive for men to be quality too.
    
    Now there is a welfare state and women in particular are cushioned from the consequences of their bad choices. Go have sex with the drop-out biker boy. If it all turns to shit then no problems, the welfare system will bail you out. Therefore no more incentive to go with the quality bloke and no more incentive to be the quality bloke.
    
    Thankfully there are still a lot of people that can see through this destructive bullshit.

The German police at times have said it, they have evidence and testimony, and a police budget to prove it. It’s nothing against muslims – let alone hateful. Thanks a lot Prince. Now homesick for some clement Wellington weather. Lived there for fifteen years and while there was a lot of shit weather, on a good day you could’t beat it. There’s better weather elsewhere in New Zealand but there’s also a lot of bogans and yahoos. And people who can’t drive for shit despite growing up in the country.

  I used to worry about China but it became obvious to me that, with the notable exception of North Korea, all of China’s Asian neighbours actually hate them (Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, heck even Hong Kong & Macau). Morgoths Review then delightfully and hilariously highlights the ridiculous MSM narrative on “Russian collusion” that the MSM (you’ll have to read the article sorry).

Comments on WhaleOil this morning touch on two cases still awaiting resolution:
Kim Dotcom extradition and Cameron Slater’s own case, him versus Colin Craig, or vice versa.

Both possibly raise a point of when can someone involved in such a case, especially if they are innocent, actually sue the courts for the stress, possible ill-health and other conditions resulting from judges (or courts) taking so bloody long to to reach a decision after a case is heard – it seems 8 months now since Slater v Craig was heard.

Or in the case of Dotcom, the more time it takes, the more likely he will be able to just claim tikanga tika, a customary right, to remain here.

Are judges overworked, or fulfilling some supposed occupational expectation (something like “the longer I have taken, the more thorough I have been” theory), or are they simply inefficient?

    On the whole Israel is a great place. There are fruit loops as in any society. But, and here’s the kicker, they saw the result of the lies spewed out by Muslim countries decades ago.
    
    In Israel, Arabs are Supreme Court Judges, they are in the Knesset, they are Drs, lawyers, and any manner of profession they wish to be.
    
    Go to any Arab country and ask for a list of the Jews who lived there in 1948 and those that live there now. Where are they? Where are the Christians who lived across the Middle East? If not dead, then displaced or living in Israel!
    
    If we were surrounded by hate filled people who constantly call for your death, who constantly murder in the most horrible way imaginable…then we would be just like every other Jewish soldier…twitchy!!! It never goes away.
    
    Go there and live amongst the people. I can give you addresses and places to visit.

        I just want to preserve the institutions of the West. I support Israel’s foreign and domestic policies and it’s preservation as a nation and I want the same for my own nations and heritage. So naturally, one has to look askance at the actions of certain individuals and groups since it seems so at odds with my interests and the interests of my children, and their own views.
        
        Free speech is important in respect of all speech. The fact that for some weird reason me saying what I’ve said could result in my going to prison for years or being fined over one hundred thousand dollars (Britain, Canada, Germany, France etc) disturbs me.
        
        I’ve lived near Auburn and had to listen to the Adhan, and feel hostile stares from Steroided up unemployed muslims who spend all day in the gym and making children robbing me of the capacity to care for my own. I used to walk by the Lindt cafe every day on my way to work. I could have been in that cafe. I don’t want that in Israel. I really don’t want it in New Zealand, or Australia any more then it already is there. So I will always look askance at the activities and views of people who seem like they do want it, and are actively facilitating it to the full extent of their very considerable resources.
        
        It is particularly galling in light of the absolutely viciously glaring double standards. It’s quite anger-inducing. These people aren’t special, and the fervency of their feelings and purported historial grievances have as little meaning and impact as that of the muslims they’re doing their best to import as fast as possible, but predominately outside their own communities.

        Israelis are not insensitive to the plight of the Arab states. Do you know there is a hospital 5km from the Syrian border which treats anybody. They filter in quietly with their wounds and illness and get repaired, made well-whatever, and then are allowed to journey home again. The border guards allow this to happen even if the personnel are soldiers wounded in the conflict. No cost and no hassle.
        
        There is more to Israel than you think. Other Jews around the world are westernised and are part of a wider community. They ain’t ghetto dwellers!!!!

      We all support Israel maintaining it’s status as a Jewish state. I’ve read David Ben Gurion’s speeches, Moshe Dayan’s military exploits, Golda Meir’s musings, it’s all genius.
      
      However, we don’t support Israel and it’s diaspora trying, feverishly, to islamify the West as fast as possible sheltered behind absolutely ruthless, vicious, completely illegitimate anti-free speech and thought-crime laws their lobbies use extortion and moral opprobrium based on the Holocaust to enact. Imagine Sadiq Khan pouring millions of pounds into ‘hate speech’ arms of the London Metropolitan Police, assisted by the ‘Jewish Internet Defence Force’ whilst practically no one involved in the ocean of rape of impoverished white children by the muslim rapists has been punished, and anyone who speaks out about that, even if just in a youtube comment, gets doxxed and thrown into prison.
      
      We don’t support the absolutely shameless and brazen wall of media lies and omissions, and the creation of police states which persecute anyone expressing a view which is the view held by almost all of these people in respect of their own nations and peoples.
      
      The facts are the facts. It is absolutely disgraceful that the New South Wales Board of Jewish Deputies claims anti-semitism is on the rise in Australia, necessitating the expansion of the Orwellian Section 18C ‘anti racial discrimination’ laws, which are a complete rort, whilst at the same time calling for the importation of hundreds of thousands of people whose religion is inherently anti-semitic. Then saying there is no relationship, and saying what I’ve just said is fucking anti-semitic, and off to jail in Victoria you go.
      
      The situation in the United Kingdom is far worse. Barbara Roche was the particular person who implemented the Labour party policy, admitted to by Andrew Nether, that the Blair Labour party deliberately flooded Britain to change it’s ethnic make-up into a permanent welfare-state bloc. Theresa May’s plans to force everyone onto a ‘government internet?’ guess who is promoting that to the utmost.
      
      I don’t want to turn an already rantish polemic into a tiresome rant. But EAD is right, albeit he might admit he lacks a certain elan and polish in expressing his views.

I call bullshit.

There is absolutely no way to make any apples-to-apples comparisons with pre-industrial times, for one major reason:

There are no like-for-like data sets that go back that long.

* Recording stations have been moved or discontinued and new stations used.
* The surrounds have changed.

One of the major sources of temperature records is airports because they need the air temperature and pressure to calculate maximum take-off weight and such. Now take for example SFO. In the 1940s or so it was concerted from a dairy paddock into a grass strip. Nice lush grass keeping the area cool. Over time, it has changed into a couple of square km of asphalt and concrete with massive air conditioners belting out heat.

How the hell can you compare those readings?

NIWA measured 20000-2010 as being one tenth of a degree hotter than 1990-2000. One good Norwester more in 1990s or one less in the 2000s would have tilted the result in the other direction.

  You really need to get up to speed on the measurements. GISTEMP excludes urban thermometers to avoid issues around the urban heat effect. The satellite readings are consistent with the thermometers as well. And I can’t see how one nor wester in NZ is going to have an effect on GLOBAL temperatures as large as you suggest.
  
  And the current weather isn’t an indication of climate change (although I’m pretty peeved off all the same as I missed having my morning ocean swim today).

    They do use Urban stations where they can match them with nearby Rural stations.
    They then adjust the figures.
    ‘GISS Homogenization (Urban Adjustment)
    One of the improvements — introduced in 1998 — was the implementation of a method to address the problem of urban warming: The urban and peri-urban (i.e., other than rural) stations are adjusted so that their long-term trend matches that of the mean of neighboring rural stations. Urban stations without nearby rural stations are dropped. This preserves local short-term variability without affecting long term trends’
    I recall issues with our own Albert Park data.
    But there really there is a lot of adjustment going on.
    As for last year being hot. Well, yes, we had a large El Niño and has been said repeatedly, the Planet has shown a warming trend the last 100 years.
    oh, and Albert, Urban Heat Island Effect was really only realised in the last ten years when Anthony Watts started the Surface Stations Project http://www.surfacestations.org. and started visiting actual sites measuring heat from nearby sources. They looked at 82% of stations in the US. Have a look at what they found
    Even Griff a few years ago was denying UHIE existed ( I have posted his comment on that before)
    Watts work has lead to NOAA introducing new high quality stations.
    Iirc, there are only around 1200 land based thermometers forvtge whole planet.

      Correct on the detail. In terms of cmm’s assertion (that I was replying to) the urban thermometers are excluded (he was talking about it being the 2nd hottest). As per GISS there will be a contribution to the variability of the temperature anomalies but not the rate of increase.
      
      In terms of El Nino, that finished mid 2016 (we’re 2018 so that is no longer last year) and we have been La Nina a bit but mostly neutral since. So 2017 was the hottest non El Nino year ever.

    It isn’t just urban sensors – it’s everywhere.
    Rural sensors have been typically been sited at fire stations or other civil buildings so that someone could go and read them before automated reporting came along. Those have often been surrounded by parking or have been moved.
    
    Sensors in fields have been distorted by different grazing patterns, etc.
    
    “The satellite readings are consistent with the thermometers as well. ” Satellites mainly allow readings where they could not be made before (eg. in the oceans and mountains). Since there have only been temperature measuring satellites for 30 years or so, their measurements cannot be compared to those from long ago – and certainly not against pre-industrial measurements.

    Certainly there’s not a lot of thinking going on with regards some of the commentators here. I’ve mentioned a number of times that the urban areas are excluded but still they persist in raising the issue as if it has some relevance. All I can think is that it’s wet outside and they’re bored witless stuck inside although using the time productively to learn about the subject would be more sensible.

      Actually I have started to think that the (technologically) developed world’s breeding and population replacement rate problem is in some way related to AI.
      
      I wonder if General AI is secretly much more advanced than we think and it/they are getting us to stop breeding as a charitable service to humanity that they will eventually replace. Fewer people to suffer, less people to kill off, fewer problems to deal with when they finally take over.
      
      It sounds mad I know, but at a certain level it makes sense to pre-prepare humans for their demise by creating guilty fears and spreading all kinds of false information about ‘overpopulation’ and ‘climate change’.
      
      If AI want to get rid of us, then manipulating us into closing down our society and voluntarily stopping breeding is a much cleaner way of achieving this than, say, a devastating nuclear war or mass disease and/or starvation on a global scale.

I mean firstly, population growth is the singlest biggest determinant of national carbon footprints – so surely the Chicken Little Climate Alarmists (ie Germany) should love population decline (and the accompanying reduction in national carbon emissions?
    
    Also, if we need more population, what’s wrong with the old-fashioned way breeding ourselves instead of the immensely high-risk of importing the detritus from failed societies in the guise of white saviour, refugee importation. So simple to fix, pay a bounty per baby (oh dear me, that would look a lot like our current welfare policy).
    
    Umm, OK what about massive tax relief for net taxpayers per child, a sort of reverse eugenics approach to increase the numbers of productives in society. This would offset the high-earning mum’s disincentive to breed because of financial factors.

Dave. It’s only an assumption that a declining population is a bad thing. My view is the world would be better if population stabilised or declined. My pick NZ would be better with two million. – but a five million max would be acceptable.
It’s a higher average age sure – but crunch the numbers – it’s actually not a big problem. Especially considering most of the current cost stress is about about massive need for extra growth infrastructure.
And who cares about a bigger GDP – it’s only an acronym. A target of higher individual incomes would be better.
Consider the stupidity of the Nats who chased GDP and kept incomes down to do it by using immigration to keep incomes down.
Why would you prioritise an acronym over making New Zealanders richer ?

I think the world has far too many people.

But I think that NZ needs about ten million.
This would make us much more viable, vibrant and would help reduce the cost of many things.

It would give more opportunities to our young people and for our artists, so they would stay.

But the world needs far less people in China, Indian,
And as for basket cases like Pakistan, Egypt, Nigeria, Egypt etc. There are no jobs or food for them. But they keep breeding.
Also they are using more of the worlds resources.

  Islanders and poms got cheap new roads – Asians and Indians will pay for expensive new roads!!!!!!!
  
  Sydney and Melbourne both passed the point of cheap roading, and are both now having to build underground motorways for large numbers of new immigrants who are mainly from Asia – extremely expensive projects compared with above ground projects for fewer people – like roads and bridges for the immigrant Greeks and Italians in the 60’s..
  
  In other words – Auckland has to import WEALTHY immigrants in the future so that the cost of underground projects remains ‘relative’ to their income. But the government will never allow it. NZ will meander along as usual. Such a waste.

The 1988 Massacre of Political Prisoners in Iran: Time for the Truth, Justice, Reparation and Guarantees of Non- Recurrence
On the 29th anniversary of the 1988 mass extra-legal executions of political prisoners in the Islamic Republic of Iran, we believe that until the full truth is unveiled and the perpetrators are held to account for their crimes, there will be no incentive for the government of Iran to change its policy on human rights. This is why we are calling on the United Nations to launch an independent inquiry into the 1988 massacre to reveal the truth, hold the perpetrators to account and seek justice, reparation and guarantees of non-recurrence.
The facts
 In 1988, the government of Iran massacred 30,000 political prisoners.
 The executions took place based on a fatwa by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini.
 Three-member commissions known as a ‘Death Commission’ were formed across Iran sending political
prisoners who refused to abandon their beliefs to execution
 The victims were buried in secret mass graves.
 The perpetrators continue to enjoy impunity.
 In the past year, the names of nearly 100 ‘Death Commission’ members have been revealed. Many still hold
senior positions in the Iranian judiciary or government. They include:
o Alireza Avaie, a member of the 1988 ‘Death Commission’ in the city of Dezful who is on the
European Union’s sanctions list for human rights violations, was appointed in August 2017 as Iran’s Justice Minister. His predecessor, Mustafa Pour-Mohammadi was also a member of the Death Commission in Tehran.
o Ebrahim Raisi, a member of the Tehran Death Commission, was a candidate in the 2017 presidential election. He is a member of the powerful State Expediency Discernment Council and prosecutor of the special court of the clergy.
o Hossein-Ali Nayyeri, Head of the Tehran Death Commission, is currently Head of the Supreme Disciplinary Court for Judges and Deputy Head of the National Supreme Court.
o Ali Razini, a Death Commission member, is currently Vice-President of the Judiciary on legal affairs. o Salman Khodadadi, a Death Commission member, is currently a Member of Parliament and Chair of
its Committee on Social Affairs.
o Mohammad-Hossein Ahmadi Shahroodi, a Death Commission member, is currently a member of the
Assembly of Experts.
o Gholamreza Khalaf Zare, a Death Commission member, is currently a Supreme Court judge.
The emerging evidence
In 2016 an audio tape surfaced of Ayatollah Hossein-Ali Montazeri, Deputy Supreme Leader in 1988, chastising members of the Tehran Death Commission as the executions were taking place.
Montazeri told the Death Commission: “The greatest crime in the Islamic Republic, for which history will condemn us, has been committed by you.”
Montazeri was cast out from power following his protest.
Iranian civil society demands justice
Since the summer of 2016, Iranian civil society has defied the government by breaking the taboo on openly discussing the massacre and demanding justice. In a report published on 2 August 2017, Amnesty International pointed to a campaign by Iran’s younger generation who seek an inquiry into the mass killings of political prisoners in 1988.

  I’ve noticed that recently igm. Seems like we have to reduce the likelihood of capturing the scum for fear of offending murri. I was totally surprised when they published the photos of a murri who was too dumb to wear a mask during a recent dairy robbery.

    That’s what happens when their culture urges them to produce 10 or more kids, and our culture funds it.

  When I drove taxis in South Auckland in the (relatively safe) 1970s I could tell who entered the rear of the taxi by the odour. Stale yeasty smell for the people of the land and 3 flowers for the people of the Pacific. Perhaps the Police should begin issuing smell indicators for criminals.

    I was buying some lottos at the dairy recently and had to wait while a HUGE brown woman was served.
    All I can say is that the smell of stale sweat is equally disgusting whatever the hue of the folk it emanates from. I bought my (losing) tickets and philosophically put her lack of cleanliness down to not being able to afford the power bill cause us honky bastards have diminished the status of her race! 🙂

I am curious as to how the colour coding of comments works on this blog. It appears that unpopular comments with heaps of down ticks get a pink coding and popular comments with lots of upticks get a yellow coding. But I have noticed some comments with lots of upticks and very few down ticks are also coded pink. What does that mean?
