There is a word for this sort of thing and it isn’t “humour” or “cartoon”. Or is it like a computer virus where you have to pay someone to regain access to your computer? Is there an account we can pay into so that these stop? How much is required?

  I think John Stringer’s problem is that the humour in his cartoons is of a different era. Reminiscent of the supposedly legendary Minhinnick of the NZ Herald for some 50 years and the same MO: take a current news event and then take it sideways and apply it in an offbeat way to the foibles or current fortunes to a contemporary figure. So the New Zealand cricket team of the 1980s is used to portray Rob Muldoon at the crease facing the bouncers, fast yorkers and turning deliveries of national economic challenges.

    Don’t agree. Minhinnick was amusing, clever and a good cartoonist. That is not what we’re dealing with here.

  A little harsh – from casual conversations at the time, some people did find some ideas appealing but were worried about wasting their vote on a party that probably wouldn’t reach the threshold (or were cat lovers 🙂 ).
