No. 5: MOANA COLE

Early in the morning on New Year’s Day 1991 four Catholic peace activists (Moana Cole from New Zealand, Ciaron O’Reilly from Australia, Susan Frankel and Bill Streit from Washington, D.C.) calling themselves the ANZUS Peace Force Plowshares, entered the Griffiss Air Force Base in New York, USA.

After cutting through several fences, Bill and Sue entered a deadly force area, where soldiers are authorised to shoot to kill. They hammered and poured blood on a KC-135 (a refueling plane for B-52’s) and then proceeded to hammer and pour blood on the engine of a nearby cruise missile armed B-52 bomber that could be used in the Middle East. They presented their action statement and an indictment to base security who encircled them moments later.

Simultaneously, Moana and Ciaron entered the base at the opposite end of the runway, and made a sign of the cross with blood on the runway, spray-painting “Love Your Enemies – Jesus Christ”, “No More Bombing of Children in Hiroshima, Vietnam, Iraq, or Anywhere!” and “Isaiah Strikes Again”. For approximately one hour they hammered upon the runway chipping at two sections, one being nearly five feet in diameter, before they were detained.

The group declared that they had came together from three different countries to reclaim the acronym from the ANZUS Treaty and create a “new pact for peace, which is the way of the Lord.” They also asserted they were acting to prevent war in the Persian Gulf and called upon people to nonviolently resist war and oppression. In their indictment they cited the U.S. government for war crimes and violations of international law.

All four were indicted on 9 January 1991 on federal charges of conspiracy and property destruction and faced a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. After being held in jail for two months, they accepted pre-trial release on March 6th. They went to trial in Federal Court in Syracuse in May and were convicted by a jury. On August 20th, they were sentenced to twelve months in prison and ordered to pay $1800 in restitution. After serving 10 months Bill and Sue were released from prison in mid-June 1992. Moana and Ciaron were released in late June on bail pending a deportation hearing.

In October 1992, Moana returned to New Zealand following her court-ordered voluntary deportation. Moana currently lives in Christchurch and has been completing a Masters Degree in Law focusing on the legality of the US-led occupation of Afghanistan.

    People have in the past disagreed with my view that Morrissey and his ilk are actually attempting to derail KB by posting this relentless litany of irrelevant crap. Their aim is not to spark genuine debate by challenging with alternative viewpoints but to piss off so many regular KBloggers that they will eventually give up in disgust. It is deliberate sabotage.         And the reason football is losing viewers is mainly because it’s so damned boring. It’s utterly predictable, and there’s almost zero spontaneity or creativity. No play lasts more than four seconds, and free, open running and kicking as in rugby or soccer is verboten.
        
        Then there’s the fact it’s played mostly on those execrable artificial surfaces—fans and players hate it, but the owners insist on it.
        
        And then of course there’s the always tedious flag-worshipping ceremony, which due to the overbearing presence of military sponsorship, has become a provocation and flashpoint, and a source of never-ending vexation.
        
        You can blame football’s problems on a few men of conscience for refusing to participate in a state-sponsored obedience ceremony if you want, but you know that’s not the reason.

* Leonard Rex Holmwood, Napier: Shot by Napier gunman Jan Molenaar after he grabbed his rifle of Jan Molenaar, tried to dissuade him from firing it, and turned it away from its intended targets. “Mr Holmwood’s outstandingly brave actions prevented Mr Molenaar from firing further shots at the wounded police officers, giving them valuable time in which to seek cover and relative safety. In doing so he sustained potentially life-threatening injuries. Even when wounded, he attempted to provide assistance to another wounded police officer who lay nearby.”

* Dennis Michael Hurworth, Senior Constable, New Zealand Police: One of the first AOS members to arrive at Chaucer Road in Napier, after gunman Molenaar opened fire. “Senior Constable Hurworth showed outstanding bravery, not only in making the decision to enter the immediate area outside 41 Chaucer Road on 7 May, 2009, at a very early stage in the incident, knowing at least one police officer had been shot and that shots were continuing to be fired by the offender, but also in remaining there after finding a colleague shot dead and a civilian wounded.”

They weren’t simply “cutting a fence and spraying paint around” like some drunken politicians’ sons might do, they were attacking war planes on a military base. I certainly wouldn’t dare to do it, and I’ll bet you would not either. Some could question how The United Nations Security Council could allow this to happen. but that would actually require some recognition that it in fact has happened, revealing how inept and biased the UN has become.

And is the Lorde issue not just as inept.

  Resolution 2334 was primarily about the US (under Obama) making a point to Israel about the continuing settlement activity on the West Bank.
  
  Even Trump recognises that it is a problem. The US can’t actually unwind the Security Council resolution.
  
  A peace solution that involves two states is virtually impossible with the current rate of settlement. But Israel has a dilemma. It also cannot agree to a one state solution and remain fully democratic and with a clear primary Jewish identity.
  
  Israel appears to have concluded that the best solution for them is a continuing occupation of the West Bank, without actually incorporating it into Israel, is sustainable for many decades to come. The Wall/Fence helps achieve that. It essentially separates Israel from the West Bank and Gaza Palestinians to the point they have almost no interaction, except for the serving military.
  
  Israel has also concluded the US essentially has Israel’s back, pretty much irrespective of the make-up of the US government. The Europeans know they can’t get too anti-Israel because of their anti-semitic past, particularly true of Germany and to some extent France.
  
  Most of the Arab world has given up on the Israel/Palestine issue. They know Israel is now extremely strong and is a permanent part of the Middle East. So they have become quite muted in their posturing, unless it serves some other need in addition to simply being anti-Israel.
  
  For instance Turkey striking out to become the dominant power in the Middle East, something of a restoration of their role over many centuries. Being anti-Israel (primarily at the level of atmospherics) serves that purpose, particularly since the EU has decisively rejected Turkey. There is now no reason for Turkey to kowtow to European demands, in fact resisting them is part of their leadership bid..
  
  So now it is all virtue signalling, such as by Lorde and others. But even that can’t too far without looking like it is anti-semetic.
  
  In the US, in particular, there will soon be federal anti-BDS laws. They are likely to bite pretty hard on companies and institutions such as Universities that practise BDS. One could easily envisage that the US could soon deny visas to non-US citizens who practise BDS. After all no-one actually has a right to a visa. So long as the policy is non-discriminatory the courts will uphold it. That is anyone who has voluntarily joined a BDS movement will not get a visa.
  
  The Trump Administration is not done yet in having Israel’s back.

      If you think Colin Powell is discredited, well you are wrong. He is greatly respected in the US as a senior statesman and distinguished soldier. Yes, his UN reprise of the missiles of October did damage him, but not to the point of being discredited.
      
      Israel has claimed legality for the war of 1967 under article 51, though they had to use the the law of pre-emptive defence. That is striking when there is a high risk of imminent and immediate attack. By and large that has been accepted.
      
      However, in the case of the West Bank, it was Jordan that struck first. Israel was actually hoping Jordan would satay out of it. More fool Jordan because they pretty quickly lost the Battle for Jerusalem and the battle for the West Bank. If they had not attacked in 1967, maybe there would have been a fully fledged West Bank state of Palestine by now.
      
      The occupation of the West Bank, of itself, is therefore legal. The reason being that the war that resulted in in it was legal.
      
      That of course means Israel has the legal duties of an occupier. Settlements are a breach of that which is why the Security Council passed Res 2334.

    I think this is a pretty accurate picture re where we are at with the ME situation, particularly re Israel and the Occupied Territories (administered by the PA, but largely controlled by Israel, through not only walls and border crossings, but also the infrastructure in place).
    
    But the ME and NE remains to be a very volatile region, and the still mostly corrupt regimes in many Arab countries can sooner or later be overthrown, and I bet the ones that belonged to so called Islamic State, they are working over time now, to destroy certain regimes and their leaders.
    
    Egypt for instance is a place to watch, so are of course Lebanon, Jordan, and ‘work’ is already under way in Yemen, Libya and so forth.
    
    With what we have, there could one day be a very nasty back-lash by Arabs, most of whom are young, under- or unemployed, live in relative poverty, and who are increasingly desperate to have change for the better, no matter whether that is what we would consider ‘better’.
    
    Turkey is playing a cunningly smart game there, in Iraq, Syria and also supporting Qatar. I think Assad is unlikely to ever fully control Syria again, as the Russians will have to make some concessions to Turkey, to keep Turkey as a new kind of ‘friend’, useful to Putin and Russia, in undermining EU unity, and also keeping the US out of the ME.

One wee scrub fire and the rail link has to shut down. If it was a bus route, thy could just go on a different road.

Between that, earthquakes, unions, staions held hostage by feral scum, etc, rail links have the problem of being very vulnerable to single points of failure.

It is different in places with huge population densities, but for NZ commuter rail is just not a good idea.

      Yeah its interesting – the Maori I learned in the 80s in a bilingual class from a teacher who came from Wanganui (no “h” back then) is *very* different from the “standardized” Maori now taught in schools and Uni. So we’re entering the 3rd year of NZTA’s “Safer Journey’s” strategy which is guiding their investment of $3.2 billion of OUR MONEY in road safety over the life of the strategy.

Aaaand like all good government agencies … they’ve achieved exactly the opposite of what was intended with the road toll already sky-rocketing from 319 deaths in 2015, to 327 in 2016, trending nose-bleedingly upwards to 383 to date (with a few more prang-packed days to go). A staggering 20% movement in the wrong direction!!!

In a rational world, if you had an investment firm handling $3.2 billion and they’d achieved a 20% loss against your investment wouldn’t the shareholders be a teeny weeny bit unhappy.

Why isn’t there outrage about this wrong-headed waste of government money?

        NZ, for better or worse, tends to be about 10 years behind the US etc although I would argue that we’re catching up at a rapid rate and tend to more like 2-3 years.
        
        Boxing Day Sylvia Park = Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) in the USA. Sure, its the one day of the year people flock to malls and big box stores.

Sad people here today, quite a few wanking in this hot global warming weather. Some bitching about the traffic – hey from North Shore took ONLY 2 hours to Mangawhai with the boats, and do it all again tomorrow with the caravan. There are some aggressive fucking wankers out there who just push in. Tangle with a 3 ton Landcruiser and a boat you will not win, and then you tangle with me.
Best thing is my Grandkids are with me tomorrow, so I will not get ANGRY. We are on holiday. Dashcam gets the fuckheads and I do report them.
Poverdy in NZ so I am spending so as to pay as much GST as I can to help Taxinder with her future problems.

    You don’t get a lot of hoons in 70 series Landcruisers Awww C-mon. They’ve got a bit of grunt but still handle like blocked drays on the highway. Turning circle is a bit over 14 metres which makes reversing the caravan or boat a trifle tricky. One of Fonterra’s milk tankers is easier to park.
    
    But for sheer stump pulling power & traction I’ve yet to find something under $100K that will beat it.

    Yep. I don’t know why this country bends over spinelessly to these people wanting everything done their way – in this case the Indian way. As in – oh no, my Indian culture dictates that I have to stay with family for x months before returning, and that could affect my immigration status.
    
    Here’s NZ possibly offering someone a chance at citizenship. Oh, the irony. If you want to move to another country – you do things *their* way. The way of the country where you aspire to be. If you can’t have it both ways, you’ll have to demonstrate how keen you are to be a New Zealander by toeing the *NZ* line. Not your Indian one. You want to *leave* India, remember ?
    
    I’m sure a lot of people are sick of the endless nonsense foot in the door immigration bullshit like this classic example.
