Israeli players have been denied visas to participate in a speed chess championship hosted by Saudi Arabia this week, a vice-president of the World Chess Federation (Fide) has said.

Seven Israeli players had requested visas for the tournament, taking place from 26-30 December. It would have been the first time Saudi Arabia had publicly hosted Israelis, as the Gulf state does not recognise Israel and there are no formal ties between them.

        Yes, Muldoon WAS wrong to urge a boycott of the 1980 Olympics. Remember that the old hypocrite had been personally responsible for significantly damaging the 1976 Montreal Games by his support for racist football.
        
        And if he was so concerned about Soviet involvement in Afghanistan, why did he not express similar concern about U.S. terror and mass murder in Central and South America, and its destruction of Indo-China?
        
        Muldoon’s regime also obediently followed the U.S. directive to support the Khmer Rouge in 1979….

        As Muldoon and his government also did under the terms of the Gleneagles Agreement to discourage NZ Rugby Union from proceeding with the 1981 Springbok tour. Really. The Olympic canoeists and a pentathlete defied Muldoon’s request and competed at Moscow, btw, just as the NZRFU ignored the overtures of Muldoon and the then-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Brian Talboys. Not that that is recalled in the re-telling by most anti-tour propagandists.
        
        Says much for Muldoon that even though he despised Carter as a muddle-headed naive dreamer whose “humanitarian” foreign policy would lead to much trouble in the world – as it did! – that Muldoon still respected Carter’s office and our relationship with the Americans sufficiently to do what he could to enforce Carter’s idiotic decision to boycott the Moscow Games. Not that Carter – a small and petty man – ever appreciated it. Instead, Cater had sought to punish Muldoon and NZ for Muldoon’s accurate description of Carter as “a peanut farmer from Georgia”. As if a New Zealander describing someone as a farmer is an insult! Muldoon’s mentor whom he greatly admired, Keith Holyoake was a farmer who had left school at age 12!

        Given that our sporting contact with South Africa that year consisted of an All Black tour to the Republic (as the British and Irish Lions had done in 1974, and then the French in 1975), what would you have had Muldoon do? Become a real fascist rather than the imaginary one the fashionable left wing tried to paint him as for years, by somehow stopping law-abiding New Zealanders from freely leaving the country to travel abroad? Yeah, that woulda worked – confiscate the passports of Bryan Williams, Ian Kirkpatrick, Sid Going and Grant Batty and place them under house arrest to stop them going…

        The New Zealand government of which Muldoon had been a part before the 1972 election, and after the 1975 one (which they won by a landslide – so much for your respect for democracy!) consistently spoke out against apartheid.
        
        All he had to do was make it quite clear that the All Blacks had no government approval of their tour. Instead, he made it an election issue in 1975.
        
        No, the point of Muldoon’s policy in 1975 was that, irrespective of government disapproval, New Zealand sporting bodies should have the freedom to compete against whom they wished. Is the reason why, when the Gleneagles Agreement was drafted and signed in 1977, Muldoon insisted that the Commonwealth nations were obligated to “discourage”, but not “ban/prohibit” sporting contacts with apartheid South Africa. Went against every bone in Muldoon’s body for a New Zealand government to take on such power.
        
        Sid and Kirky and the rest of them—apart from men of conscience like Sandy McNicol and Graham Mourie—could then have enjoyed their sojourn in the apartheid state, turning a blind eye to the daily humiliations of the black and coloured populations
        
        But in many cases they didn’t. They went, and made up their own minds based on what they saw and experienced. In the case of some – Bruce Robertson and Gary Seear – it meant that they did not play against the 1981 Springboks. In the case of others – Kirkpatrick as manager of the 1986 Cavaliers, Alan Sutherland (who like Kirkpatrick, Williams and Going had toured there before in 1970), Lawrie Knight and Kevin Eveleigh – they later toured again or even lived in South Africa. In the case of others – Bryan Williams, coach (and later Labour Party candidate) JJ Stewart and Billy Bush – they continued to express misgivings and opposition to apartheid, but also their belief that sporting boycotts were a counter-productive means to end it. Which was Muldoon’s policy all along – New Zealand individuals and sporting organisations should be free to make up their own mind, without government interference and restrictions.
        
        But typical that a quasi-fascist like you would seek to dictate and determine after the event what is and isn’t a decision of genuine “conscience”.

        Actually, yes, Springsteen is sanctimonious. Not even a bad song, but I won’t go to see him live. I like the Jam as well, even agree with them sometimes, but I will not see them live.
        
        Lots of great music has been written by utter pillocks. We may enjoy it, but we may also draw our lines. For many, ‘Not taking a stand’ is worthy of a boycott. For me, politicising everything is worth a boycott.

  If a Muslim terrorist fails in his or her attack to establish an obvious motive – typically their action is classified a lone wolf mentally afflicted event of violence – does said person, when finally appearing before Allah, have to forego infinite sexual pleasure, the right to petition on behalf of his or her family and loose any other advantages, for his action having not been clearly in the service of Allah or Islam?

    So if territory can come under legitimate new management, why not…religious and/or seasonal feasts and holidays? That is what has happened in NZ to a large extent. Christmas has been emptied of its Christian meaning for many – and fair enough, if you are not a Christian you are not obligated to worship Christ and commemorate his incarnation – and turned into a family/national summer holiday occasion.
    
    So, no. As a good Protestant – of the Calvinist tradition that once attempted to abolish Christmas 😉 – I don’t automatically accept what the Pope says is so. But in deference for the day, and for the sensitive Nukuleka’s sake (who is seldom as charitable, much less abstains from “perennially nasty toxic religious bigotry” when discussing other faiths, particularly Islam), I’ll refrain from addressing the Bishop of Rome by his traditional description by Protestants, “the Antichrist”.         Yes, although we only reserved that penalty for Anabaptists – who said Calvinist don’t have a sense of humour about their religion? 😉 Others like Servetus – whom Rome also condemned in a similar manner before he escaped and then washed up in Geneva looking for trouble, likely to usurp Calvin’s leadership – were burned at the stake. Backstory – Years before and at the risk of his life Calvin had delayed his flight from Catholic France at the request of Servetus who wanted to discuss biblical doctrine with him. Calvin did so in the hope of ministering life to Servetus’ heretical trinity-denying mind, but Servetus never showed up. Still doesn’t make the capital punishment for heresy right, although Calvin did plead with the Geneva town council that they do so by the quicker more humane method of the sword…

All the spaces taken up at the pumps at my local BP station this morning at 6.10am. Widespread reports of some service stations with no fuel at all last night.

Why have we not been prewarned and what steps are being taken to ensure that fuel supplies will be maintained over the holiday period?

Will the fuel companies and the Duty Minister please stand up.

    I would have thought that the Government had some interest in the maintenance of a regular fuel supply over the peak holiday period. Cars need filling, delivery trucks have to continue operating, tour coaches are full and every rental car and campervan in the country has been rented to tourists.
    
    Labour held the Nats feet to the flames over the avgas crisis and they responded.
    
    Now it’s Labour’s turn to stand up even if it is only to declare that there’s no problem and there’s no need for panic buying.

Radio NZ on its web site doesn’t have much about the religious aspect of Christmas, though I bet if it were a Muslim, Hindu or Chinese festival, there would be a full explanation.

There’s an LGBTIQ flag, and a report which quotes RainbowYOUTH executive Director, Frances Arns, suggesting that 8000 young LGBT New Zealanders are living “in unsafe environments such as cars, motels or on the street.”

Arns arrives at this number by, first, stating that “… there’s more than 40,000 people living” in this way. Then:

“We know that around half of that population is under 25, and using American research, we estimate up to 40% of homeless rangatahi identify as queer and or gender diverse.”

Rangatahi is Maori for young people.

The Auckland based RainbowYouth says it is “dedicated to helping young queer and gender diverse (LGBTIQ) people up to the ages of 27, as well as their wider communities. LBGTIQ stands for Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender, Intersex, and Questioning.

The calculation basis for the number of these young folk having a rough time is flaky, but I hope religious or other charity groups are able to give them sort of Christmas cheer today.

Ice blocks the size of wheelie bins, leafy greens and turkey are just some of the festive foods on the menu at Auckland Mission

Much like the rest of the country, the missions bludgers received a treat of their favourite foods on Christmas Day.

Some of the treats were even wrapped in Christmas packaging, providing enrichment and entertainment as well as a tasty treat.
New Zealand’s bird of the year, the cheeky kea, unwrapped a favourite treat of peanuts and cashew nuts from cardboard boxes.
Kea enjoyed the cardboard box almost as much as the nuts inside. 😆

Fresh fish and seafood were on the menu for these otterly-adorable asians.

A team of reindeer.
Or – I’ve got it totally wrong. Good – it’s all nonsense anyway.

I also met a true blue old kiwi woman that says again to sound like ‘a-geee-yennnnn’. And ‘Yeeyee-esssss’. A lady of few words – mostly due to each one lasting a minute each.

Me: There’s no shortage of nice spots to hang out – Auckland Botanic Gardens and Auckland Domain for starters. Of course, it’s possible that Stephieboy has been helping out as a volunteer at the Auckland City Mission Christmas lunch. Not quite in the same league as Starbucks, but close enough.

Stephieboy: Not at all. Rather tipsy at the moment with plenty of doses of French bubbly plus the usual trimmings .Desert awaits till later in the evening.The City Mission is remote from my thoughts ,God forbid ! My wife is Asian and she is has an uncanny knack for producing traditional Anglo Saxon Christmas fare better than anyone else …Our cat Lu lu awaits expectantly for left overs but the Missus is strict in regard to these matters so the cat will have to depend on the usual boring pellets . Nosttadumus , yuletide blesssings before I tipsly fall over into a heap !
