According to my dad, Freddy [Trump] was nice, really smart, easygoing, low-key. He was also, apparently, fond of his family, and he occasionally had his scrappy brother Donald, who was eight years younger, come to stay with him at Lehigh University.

Alas, Donald does not seem to have felt the same familial loyalty. Freddy, an alcoholic, died at 43, and when his father, Fred Sr, died 18 years later, it was discovered that the latter’s will, which Donald helped to draft, specifically cut Freddy’s children and descendants out of the family inheritance. Freddy had a grandchild who suffered from cerebral palsy and the Trump family had helped to pay for his care. But when Freddy’s children sued over their grandfather’s will, Donald promptly withdrew the medical benefits the baby desperately needed.

“I was angry because they sued,” Donald said to the New York Times last year, when asked about this incident, as if that was, I don’t know, justification for depriving an infant of medical care? The final outcome of this charming saga is unknown but one thing we can say for certain is the US is truly blessed to have this guy overseeing its healthcare plans.

  In my opinion if you want kids, save up, stay home and look after them – if you’re not prepared to do that don’t have them. Society was a much better place when mothers were home for their kids full time – it’s called being a parent. If people can afford childcare they can afford to stay home.

  Unfortunately, as pointed out in the paper this morning, international research shows the longer the paid parental leave, the fewer mothers return to work.

      So, a logical extension will be that it will. be harder for women to find suitable career/salaried jobs, so they will need state support.       I have mates running small businesses with maybe five persons on the payroll. They just do not employ women of childbearing age because they cannot afford the associated expenses of parental paid leave or have the strain on the remaining staff of retraining a temp employee. This legislation will only further extend that pool of employers. They know that it’s against the law to discriminate based on gender but that can be easily ‘managed’ during the recruitment process and by employing women over fifty years of age.

  I’ve employed a lot of staff in my time and in my experience about half the women who take maternity leave never return. It’s a time-consuming expense hiring a temp to provide cover for a woman on maternity leave but it peeves me off no end when during the last week of maternity leave they hand their notice in for a job that by law I have had to hold for them. I was waiting for a bus in Commerce St Auckland last night and got approached by no less than four beggars actively asking for money. Firstly I thought this was illegal and secondly two of them were Indians whose command of English seemed to suggest they were recent immigrants. One of them was young, filthy and clearly pulling some sort of confidence trick. Why are they in NZ, how did they get in? Are we so stupid that we are now importing beggars? It was bad enough having to walk past several groups of Maori camping out on the footbpaths. Auckland is turning into a third world hell hole.

    Because they’ve given the Auckland facilities maintenance contract to an Australian company. (Um why can’t an Auckland Company do this, surely helping local businesses succeed is as good for the wellbeing of nzers than just putting up cleaners minimum pay rates.) And now Council facilities are on a needs only contract. So instead of emptying the bin weekly or someother measure, they will empty the bin as needed. However as needed seems a bit open to interpretation and seems to have resulted in scruffy.

  I have to disagree. Sometimes when we feel passionate about something we may act or say something offensive in the heat of the moment. I can guarantee if I saw Winston’s car driving past I would give him the middle finger and the air would turn blue with the diatribe that would be unleashed. I would not expect to lose my job over this, however. Freedom of speech and expression is absolute, even if it is likely to cause offence. I know I push the boundaries in this respect ( and have been censured for this), but we don’t live in North Korea. (yet)

    Free speech is a limitation on government. It does not protect you from being fired from your job. Though it can be a grey area if the employer is also a government contractor.
    
    In NZ, discrimination in employment based on political opinion is not allowed. So that would give you some protection here. But in the US, political opinion is not one of the prohibited categories.

To think the money will be gouged off the elderly on fixed incomes,is a complete betrayal of our aged. In fact who would have thought that “Elder Abuse” is alive and well in NZ.   Schools are not uniform specialists. The cock-ups at our local high school were monumental. We chose not to support the school – rather, the local clothing store who knew how to buy etc. etc. Same as stationery. The schools charge more than the local stationery (and their product is always on special at that time of the year). Then the bloody schools head off to the local clothing store and local stationer later on in the year with their begging bowl asking for sponsorship for the ruby team, the netball team etc. etc. So, I’m not bothered that they won’t be able to sell uniforms and make a profit. They should stick to what they so – that is run a school. Guess what? The local businesses they’ve gone into competition withdon’t put their hands in their tills and hand over their hard-earned money. I’m with the businesses on that. There are more worthy community groups to sponsor than bloody schools!

some hills with a little bit of snow on them
some people standing in a flooding river

the South Island covered in coloured crayon

  It’s clearly not that simple, if you choose to actually read the paper.
  
  In it, our maternity leave is listed as 18 weeks, just above the recommended minimum of 14 weeks. And yes, 18 weeks is the average – just for maternity leave. But, according to their tables, there is no additional parental leave in NZ, whereas most of the other countries do have that. And some quite sizeable amounts, too.
  
  This is where the averages differ – 55 weeks average for all leave (maternity + parental) – and NZ is just left with 18 weeks maternity. So, yes, she is correct, if you’re quoting total parental leave and not -just- maternity leave.

        The inclusions are for “paid parental leave” (which is more akin to our system) as well as “home care leave” (which is noted as not being common)
        
        It doesn’t matter that we don’t have provision for what the OECD report classes as “different types of parental leave”, or offer it. The fact remains that most other OECD countries do. And we don’t. And where other OECD countries don’t offer the “additional types”, they have a bigger “basic type” e.g. The UK.
        
        The summation column is for “total amount of paid leave available to mothers”. That is, putting all definitions aside, this is the total number of weeks of paid leave. NZ does not offer the same amount of total paid leave for mothers as most other OECD countries.
        
        You can’t remove all other paid leave benefits a mother in Austria may recieve and then say “oh, we’re doing better than them because we offer more basic leave” – what about the 40 odd other weeks and benefits?
        
        48? I don’t know. I couldn’t see that anywhere. 55 is the average of “total paid leave for mothers” in this report. Perhaps it is another year.

        Sure, the numbers in the report are wrong as of Nov 2017 but it’s “maternity leave followed by parental leave” which totals 52 weeks. And that would be represented as base maternity (as in NZ) + parental (as not in NZ) = total of 52 in the table.
        
        There are no exceptions in there. It’s just a different category/class. And you can’t say that NZ’s sole, base 18 weeks, is a better deal.
        
        Soon we’ll be suggesting that the winner of a rugby match should be the team that scores the most tries, not that which scores the most points.

      I think you will find that there has been a miscalculation for the Finnish figures in the OECD report.
      Finland does not give parental leave (including maternity leave) of 161 weeks.
      
      It gives 105 working days maternity leave and 158 working days paternal leave – all up about – 52 weeks.

One of the other cases (can’t remember which) is a low lying atoll.
But the atoll is sinking. Too many people living on a fragile structure, messing with the coral.

The sea is rising but at a very slow rate. We would have to see huge melting of inland Antarctica before we really noticed it at sea level. There is a shit load of water frozen in Antarctica, km’s deep.
Mind you, by then it would be too late to stop it, if we could

Super should be means tested and the age raised.
There are plenty that don’t actually need it.
Any politician that has a government pension should automatically be disqualified.
If your income is over a certain amount it should be gradually reduced until it’s zero.
Anyone found to be claiming a pension while having hidden assets should be charged like any other benefit fraudster.
The problem is that no one in power has ever had the guts to do it.

    Practically speaking that would be impossible. There are no charities in New Zealand, and not nearly enough of them, with the resources and funding to do the job. That is why the DPB was established in the first place. And the funding issue would mean that a lot of people, most likely the very wealthy, would have to dig deep to make it happen, which means whatever tax they had been given back would be gone anyway. More likely not enough would want to do it, and we would end up with extreme levels of poverty, which would quickly, and rightly, create a public backlash, and a new government would get voted in to do something about it. All in all, an unrealistic proposal.

So we hear a lot about how Government ought to govern for all New Zealanders. Why doesn’t anybody ever challenge that meaningless, if not actively misleading, platitude?

Think about it. What could any Government actually do, for you personally?

A) Spend other people‘s money on things that you like

B) Stop other people from doing things that they want to, but you don’t like

C) Force other people to do things that they don’t want to, but you like

But that’s not governing for all New Zealanders. That’s siding with some New Zealanders against other New Zealanders.

Is there anything else you can think of that Government can do, that genuinely would be to the benefit of all New Zealanders, not just the ones like you?

In short, Governments should not be allowed to get away with saying they are working for all New Zealanders. Instead they should be forced to make explicit exactly who they are siding with, and at whose expense.

      You left out police and defense. That seems arbitrary to me, and suggests you do think the government should do some things via taxation. I think that exposes a contradiction in your thinking. Unless you advocate no government and no taxation, you’re just moving the line about it should and shouldn’t do, and what it should or shouldn’t tax people for, which contradicts your initial point. And I have never seen any real world evidence that the private sector can do the things on your list. It would also create anomalies. If you privatise the fire service, then that means people have to pay for the service, and only they get that service. But fires don’t respect property boundaries.

      The basic problem I see with your idea, which I have hinted at already, is that you’re being inconsistent. The core ethical point you’re making is that people should not be taxed for things that are not a benefit to them, at least in your opinion, and that such taxation is being raised by force, and both of these practices according to you are wrong ethically. But to be consistent with that core ethical claim you must argue for no government and no taxation at all, at any level. That would be anarchism of course. Because the instant you say that we must have some government, and some taxation, you have walked away from your core ethical argument. For example defense and the police. You may choose to believe that these are necessary functions of government, of benefit to all, and thus worthy of taxation, but someone else might not. They might think that defense and the police should also be privatised, and that they should not have to be taxed, by force, for those things. So unless you are arguing for anarchism, your argument is meaningless. All you are doing is shifting the line of tax/no tax around in a an entirely subjective way. So ethically speaking, your argument is inconsistent.

Police have arrested and charged four male youths for the aggravated robbery of the Sunbeam Milk bar in Gore at approximately 7:20pm on 5 October 2017.

A 16-year-old, two 15-year-olds and a 14-year-old have all been charged and are due to appear in Invercargill Youth Court on 10 November 2017.

A fifth male offender who is 12-years-old has been referred to Youth Aid.

While the nation went through the garbage of Peters’ selection process it seems that he never had any intention of doing other than going with the Toothfairy. The delay was simply designed to give him more leverage with Labour.
It now seems, at least according to W O H B that he filed High Court papers in relation to his pension issue on September 22. Those papers were served after noon today. The action is said to involve three (3) ministers with a total of nine 9) overall, includo9ng the MSD chief and NZ Herald/Newshub.
The bastard. Just like the money NZF filched from the taxpayer. Peters has set up a smoke screen to prevent examination of his actions in Parliamentary debate. This sort of person should never have been permitted to take the oath of office. He is totally unsuitable.
But that is MMP, is it not????

  (1) Either Winnie himself to make a scene
  -or-
  (2) A little Green birdie over at MSD who was upset about Winnie having a go at MeTu after her fraudulent shambles. They had been having a long running ding-dong battle.

The Peters case will in fact cause more attention to be focussed on this garbage issue than if it had been left to die. But reviving it is obviously seen as an excellent political diversion. Peters is a combatant who thinks that in 2017 he can give copies of court filings to a blog that in turn uses them to dump on former Ministers and others….. and to deny any knowledge. And that is a bridge for sale.
I guess the lesson to be learned is that in 2017 personal vendettas outweigh the interests of a nation. Political grandstanding by an individual who has made a “career” from unsourced leaks that turn out to be partisan assertions is sad !
Bugger the Nation. Getting “even” is more important. Being a party to that sort of activity is as low as the sort of shit peddled by Hager and his enablers. Very, very sad !!!

Melbourne Cup activists scale crane, block Flemington train line in Manus Island protest

A woman has been arrested and police have beefed up their presence at the Melbourne Cup, after a car was parked across the train line to Flemington Racecourse as part of a protest. Two other women scaled a crane to unfurl a protest banner at the Cup, which read “SOS: Evacuate Manus Now”.

The parked car, which had similar protest messages painted on its roof and bonnet, caused major delays on the Flemington Racecourse train line. Racegoers were forced to get off a train and walk along the tracks to the racecourse.

Not sure the racegoers would’ve been pleased about the disruption.

A group calling itself the Whistleblowers, Activists & Citizens Alliance (WACA) has claimed responsibility for the protest action.

WACKO might be a better acronym. Something like Weirdo and Collective of Kinky Oddballs?

“We are joining with others across Australia to demand that the Government evacuate the men on Manus immediately and bring them to safety for processing,” WACA spokeswoman Charlotte Lynch said.

A less charitable characterisation is that they were selfishly ruining a good day out for the punters.
