  Friday, 17 November 2017,
  armed robbery – with an illegal handgun.
  
  Then led Police on a high-speed police chase through Hastings – in a stolen car.
  
  Shooting himself in the leg during the flight.
  
  Matenga and another offender reportedly reached speeds of 110kph in 50kph areas and over 140kph in 100kph areas. Often on the wrong side of the road and threatening the lives of those in oncoming traffic.
  
  Matenga threw objects, including glass bottles, at pursuing police.
  
  The chase ended with the fleeing car first smashing into one police car – with an officer inside it. Then later crashing into a second police car.
  
  Matenga fled on foot but was caught a short time later in someone’s back yard. His revolver was found on a nearby property.
  
  If a child had found that weapon instead of Police then serious injury or death would have been all but a certainty.
  
  The penalty for this insanity? With parole he will serve ten months in jail.
  
  Pathetic. Now taxpayers will no doubt PAY HIM compensation under ACC for his self-inflicted injury.

  I guess that gets him held in jail for the time being, until the next judge lets him out! ! with just a wet bus ticket of a sentence,
  if he earns the brownie points of parole, like Matenga above.
  
  It would seem he will also miss out on the 3 strike law.

The writing is on the wall. The next americas cup will be held in Italy. The brainless Labour government and their Red mayor from Auckland will kill it for Auckland. Big Business and logic say the $190 million option will be best for bringing challenges, jobs, tourists and business to Auckland but the socialists for the sake of showing they are in charge will wave away a billion dollar windfall for the sake of principle. You can tell its a good deal when the lefts tame econimist Yeecup Yarcup comes out against it.

  I can go both ways on this:
  
  Sure it is a hell of of an occasion and a potential for showcasing.
  
  – but –
  
  Does the boat building etc industry really need a hand up and showcasing? I don’t think so.
  
  NZ built, and crewed, both the top two boats in 2012 and is internationally renowned for boat-building. If you’re going to get a maxi-yacht then there is only one place to get it built: NZ.
  
  When you’re streets ahead of anyone else in the field you surely don’t need taxpayer and ratepayer funded handouts.
  
  Sure, there’s some potential for tourism etc, but we’re already struggling to handle the tourism loading.
  
  So, from me, meh.

    The AC doesn’t attract backpackers who while they spend a lot of time in the country, they contribute little to the economy overall. We’re talking people who will be down here with their superyachts whose fuel bill alone is over $500k. People who will spend top $$ at hotels, restaurants, shops etc.

    I like your patriotism but to get real about NZ’s place in the super yacht scene, if 100 super yachts come to Auckland, the proportion built here would not make the fingers on one hand.
    On the other hand for maintenance and refurbishment, there would be a lot of dosh to spinoff a AC campaign.

Looking at TV the other night I saw a dentist complaining about the number of people not getting their teeth fixed because they cannot afford it. His answer was to get the Govt (fucking taxpayer you moron) to subsidise their outrageous fees.
$400 per hour is the standard charge apparently. If they cannot run a business successfully on such a high rate WITHOUT a taxpayer subsidy, then get out of the business and do something else. What other business charges such high rates and gets a subsidy?

If times are tough, try reducing your fees and see what happens.

  I am not a dentist but am aware of the costs of setting-up a “chair.” I understand it is typically circa $300,000. That’s a lot of hours work at $400 per hour to repay together with interest, rents, wages etc.. I agree the taxpayer ought not be responsible for these costs but didn’t the non-lamented Helen Clark suggest just this last week?

        I haven’t, but a friend went there. He came back to NZ and promptly broke a newly repaired tooth. He found a cheap flight back up and they repaired it for nothing and put him up for nothing.
        
        End result, all his teeth repaired and at least a 50% saving in the cost he would have paid here in NZ. That includes both flights, accommodation and food.
        
        Worth it!!!

        Cheap and hygenic. One filling cost me $40 incl free clean. Bangkok is another place for dental work. Their dental clinics are like the Park Royal.

        Definitely Thailand, in my case Phuket. One crown, one chip repaired, less than half the NZ cost and totally professional. Subsequently had a broken tooth removed here, and my dentist acknowledged that the Thai work was exemplary.

        There are hundreds of clinics in Bangkok so it would probably pay to get references.
        As it happens I’m off to get my teeth cleaned at one in the local market today where I’ve been a few times before. Last year was about $45 including a small filling that didn’t need an anesthetic. Don’t go there for anything more major. Had a gold crown done at a much more up market hospital down the road a couple of years ago. Labour was inexpensive, but hardware I don’t know what to compare with. All up under $1000.

        There’s a great dentist in Hanoi called the Australian Dentist (they’re not) I went there after my local dentist said I needed about $12000 of repairs to my fancy mouth work. The dentist said there was nothing wrong, and gave me a clean. I went later to another dentist who confirmed that was right. Very low cost, honest, and interesting town to visit.

    Which is why health companies are buying up dental practices. They can capitalise practices in a way many dentists cannot. Established dentists can ‘unlock’ the capital tied up in their practices by selling out but continuing to work, otherwise upon retirement they cannot necessarily sell the practice for full value as many dentists wanting to buy cannot afford to pay what the practice is worth.
    Another thing – it is not a one-off $300,000. Everything needs to renewed every 10 years or so, even if the replaced chair is ‘handed down’ to the hygienist. Modern requirements are more stringent – sterilising instruments in a gas flame was acceptable 60 years ago but is no longer acceptable.

      Lets say $500,000 to set up and run for a year.
      at $400 per hour it will take the dentist 1250 hours to pay off. Thats 31 weeks. Plus there is depreciation etc to get these costs off their tax.
      This might be a little simplistic but the point is they are charging too much if they are moaning about not getting enough customers.

        We are already seeing much needed market forces at work in the optometry industry. Remember when we had a very limited number of overpriced opticians – now we have large international chains such as OPSM & Specsavers competing for our dollar. It’s happening in the hugely protected pharmacy sector with the arrival of Wholesale Chemists. Dentists are now advertising extensively and I reckon it’s just a matter of time before the nut cracks.

    The purpose of regulations that compel dentists to spend so much money on compliance are, I would have thought, designed to produce better health outcomes in the community.
    The logic is clear. Higher standards. Better quality healthcare.
    There is a problem. These strict standards push up costs, which the dentist passes on to their patients. As a result, the people on lower incomes who really do need health care, make the choice to go without.
    More regulations thus lead to lower levels of community health.
    It’s like that study in the UK showed that making helmets compulsory on bicycles actually resulted in more deaths (due to lack of exercise) as people (the ones most in need of exercise) simply stopped riding.
    
    The writers of the medical regulations need to consider if their stricter standards are actually leading to worse outcomes.
    How about rating dentists like restaurants. “A” have compliance with all the latest standards; “B” comply with 1990s standards; and “C” comply with mid-1970s standards. Let the consumer choose where to go to have their teeth checked. (Dentists have been probing around in patients’ mouths with hand tools and little mirrors for the last 100 years.)

        Mercury Amalgam filling I would guess. Still used, and testing over long periods show that the amount of Hg that leaks is an insignificant health risk. Used because it is quite difficult to get a robust material that can be packed into a tooth and yet set hard enough to resist the environment in the mouth over a long time. These days the new “plastic” epoxy fillers are considered robust enough and are often preferred.

    Re the cost of setting up in NZ: they also have to pay a dental nurse and receptionist full time. My dentist’s bills are eye watering too, but one can’t underestimate the costs they have in NZ.

  If dental services were “free” then everyone would still be paying, but the only real difference is that people would then get unnecessary stuff done because everyone else is paying.
  
  That $10k job to straighten and whiten your teeth? Sure, why not if it is “free”. Well it’s only costing you 1c since the rest of the country are chipping in 1c each.
  
  Unfortunately everyone else is doing the same, so you end up paying 5 million cent ($50k) to get $10k of “free” dental services.

  The Audiologists and Optometrists are the other so call professionals who are just creaming it. They say they are professionals but they are just Sales people selling a product mainly to older people. Yes as you get older, me included, go deaf and blind and need help however the pressure is put on to buy the $7000 dollar hearing aid when the $1000 will do.
  The $500 dollar glasses when it you were told your need (say 2.4) the $10 pair will do even if you need to replace them few months because they scratch.

    An eye specialist said I needed reading glasses and told me to buy a pair of #1 glasses from the Warehouse. So audiologists who recommend ear trumpets should be in favour. I understand that hearing aid manufactures own or are associated with most audiology practices.

        This shows how technology has progressed. An ordinary lens (not bifocal etc) can be manufactured to an optically acceptable standard very cheaply. In the 19th century it would have to be hand ground and would cost a fortune.

        The frames were $149 (reduced from $369). The rest was for the lens, they are progressives (or verifocals for the Pomes amongst us) as I have both short & long sight and photo chromatic lens (the tint changes in bright sun).
        
        My short sight became apparent in my 20s, it was a bugger at varsity when the lecturer started to use those new fangled over head projectors to show lecture notes (early 1980s). The 20 years later, I was given a copy of Who’s Who (in London) to read when we were trying to work out who was going to be the New Zealander of the year at the 2002 Waitangi Ball in London, I was finding it impossible to read so it was along to the optician to discover I’d also become longsighted. Mind you my new pair of glasses this year cost about the same as the last pair in the UK.

      Go online and buy from a site like Goggles4u. I have done it for the last 10 years , as has my wife. No issues at all. My last set of glasses ( with transition lenses) cost less than $100 delivered within 2 weeks.
      Just get your eyes tested as normal and ask for your prescription.

    The difference between a $1000 and a $7000 hearing aid is night and day.
    I recently had to admit I needed hearing aids after pissing off those around me for too long. My hearing was damaged by a high fever a few years ago.
    
    The $7000 set was actually on special, and with a govt $1000 subsidy (I didn’t know that existed) end up costing circa $3000 for the pair.
    The little suckers are Bluetooth linked, they initially echo-locate inside my ear when first set up to determine the shape and correct for this. The app on my phone lets me filter noise, make it focus straight ahead, can link to hear my phone audio direct etc etc.
    A HUGE difference to a simple amplifier

    A friend of mine has had an interesting experience: paid hundreds for ‘perfect’ lenses in her reading glasses, slightly different for each eye. But finds the cheap pharmacy ones (same lens for each side) much better. When she asked the optometrist about this, he admitted that basically the brain gets used to adjusting for slightly different sight in each eye.
    
    So I’d say if all you need is reading glasses at least try the cheap ones before you spend up large for the ‘perfect’ lenses.

      Just a “light” comment from a different perspective – as I understand it, optometrists spend as much time checking out the health of your eyes as doing the refraction, so it’s not all bad getting a proper examination if you think your vision has changed.

      As I understand the situation your eyes have muscles that flex the lens as required. So they can adjust to the shit glasses, but depending on what you use your eyes for it can be hard yakka and you get eye strain.
      The older you get the more things stiffen up – in your eyes – and the harder the muscles have to work. So getting the right glasses helps the little buggers out.
      
      I suppose someone will now tell me I’m talking a load of shit!!

This description is a gross misrepresentation, if not a deliberate lie.
The families of the Pike River disaster have already received $8 million via charitable donations, $ 5 million via ACC, and have $15 million further ACC payments “in the bank” to come. ( TOTAL – $28 Million)
The prosecution of Whittall was always going to fail because the evidential link could never be made between criminality and cause. Health and safety trial aspects appear to have been compromised by Labour Department culpability.
It is time that Monk and his fellow blood suckers took note of the fact that it is they who are involved in “blood money” – not the previous mine owners, nor directors, nor Whittall. [That is where they want to again – sue Whittall and the company to squeeze extra dollars. But, as the saying goes “Be careful what you wish for” – contributory negligence will again arise. We dont need to go there.]
Let it go. New Zealand has been generous on this issue. But with this latest Monk charade, so far as I am concerned, never again.
So, $28 million up until December 2013.
The catchcries’ “we want our boys back” is nothing but a money grubbing exercise since there appears to be some (at least) victim culpability
Not a penny more. Period.

      It was either the mine or lower paid jobs elsewhere. The mine project would have been plain uneconomic if a proper alternative entrance had to be provided in which case it should not have proceeded. A resources analyst in a major sharebroking firm analysed the mine project and thought it was a turkey.

I read that more financial institutions around the world are aghast at NZ’s financial future with the new lot in place. Yesterday Forbes went as far as predicting a recession with Jacinda at the helm. The $11billion hole as depicted by Steve Joyce now looks as though it is heading towards $20billion yet on and on the spending goes. Perhaps it is time to reprise the Clark years and start leaving the country…at least that’ll solve the housing crisis given it is an issue well beyond the abilities of Twyford. Where’s Steve Joyce’s apology? That’s right: Labour is never wrong!

  I can’t understand the housing “so called experts”. They say rental stock has dropped by 60% in wellington yet more people can’t afford to buy.

    Population (including transients such as students) is steadily increasing but the housing stock increase is not keeping pace. It is difficult and expensive to build new houses RMA and paranoid building requirements and inspections. So in the limit the price people have to pay for existing houses will be governed by the cost of building new houses. Clobbering landlords with banning negative gearing, guaranteed tenancies and other nasties will simply cause a flow of houses from the rental market to the owner occupier market. OK this may help some renters to buy a house but will potentially squeeze the majority of renters. As it is some landlords are starting to get the hots and are selling up. Also some owner-occupier buyers would be buying two flat properties living in one and in due course absorbing the second flat into the main house.
    It is renters somewhat above the bottom of the heap, but not the wealthy (including diplomats renting) who are hit hard as no one cares about them.

  While we all hope that’s the end of the story, I doubt it.
  
  The real concern amongst ZANU-PF leadership was not so much the governance of the country, but that they were going to miss their chance to put their hands in the till because Mugabe wanted to hand over to his wife instead of to the next in line in the ZANU-PF stable.
  
  More than likely we’ll see a little power struggle play out as they work out who is next for the top job.

  From my limitied understanding it is because the bottle it comes in looks like a wine bottle and has wine-like branding, therefore all the wowsers are concerned it normalises boozing and therefore can’t be sold to kids.
  
  Think of it a bit like those cigarette lollies we had back in the 1960s and 1970s – as good as banned these days.

    No, it is the supplier who wanted it marketed as liquor including an age limit. It is also shelved next to liquor but cannot be shelved with liquor. Management tags it as liquor in the till system so staff must do age check before selling it. Presumably Woolworths/ Countdown consider that the marketing ploy is worth it.

      If it was shelved with other grape juices it probably would not sell as the high price would stick out like a sore thumb. Presumably they want it to be noticed by shoppers browsing in the liquor section since for example in a local supermarket liquor and grape juice are pretty well at opposite ends of the supermarket.

I had assumed that Winston would tarnish the Labour image (as he did with National 1996-99) but it seems to be happening the other way around this time.   Th education system at basic level is very good a legacy of the colonials. In addition despite the corruption at the top there are good people at other levels with at least one UK based governance professional body ICSA very active educating people in the law finance etc. This organisation has been going 130 years.
  As you say if you took a random number of Zims off the street and the same from the hood Kiwis would be shocked at the ignorance of ours.

If you do nothing else today, listen to Mike Hosking skewer Stuart Nash over Pike River. Hosking brought out the quote from Ms Ardern 10 days before the election:

That direct quote from Jacinda Ardern is pretty unequivocal. There are no if’s, but’s or maybe’s, and Labour is saying the mine re-entry wasn’t dependent on safety.

Labour is now in government however, and discovering the folly of making promises it cannot keep. That the Pike River families have accepted Little’s backdown simply reinforces that their activism has been politically motivated.

    They may risk shifting legal liability from Directors to officials or even Cabinet ministers. It could be argued that a minister overiding a Director’s judgment exposes himself to the same liability that that Director would have had. Regardless, this matter could well land up in Court.

      1) I think it’s a far more interesting topic than linking to the latest Islamic atrocity and commenting “yet another example of the diversity dividend”. We can read that ourselves in the NZ MSM whereas the stories I share don’t get published in the NZ MSM.
      
      Has anyone who has posted about the latest Islamic atrocity and taught us something we don’t know?
      
      2) I have a dissident mind. I’d rather not be one of those drones who has their thoughts narrowed by social taboos.
      
      3) I’ve not had my natural human instincts beaten out of my by years of propoganda. The “left vs. right” paradigm by which most people’s speech and thoughts are moulded by is completely foreign for most of history. It’s only post French Revolution the words left & right even entered our vernacular.
      
      Put simply, I think the same but the opposite of how Jews think. For them, it ain’t “left vs. right” it’s “Jew vs. Gentile or What’s good for the Jews?

        To prove my point in my response to Flipper above – it’s interesting to observe that as of 10.17am, yet again not one person has addressed the points I have made. Even when I reference and link to an article in the Israeli press (as the bar for standard of proof is set so unbelievably high as to be impossible to clear for anything that could be perceived as even remotely anti Jewish) they still won’t address what is right in front of them.

It does also state that GDP will grow again in 2019 and 2020 as Govt spending stimulates the economy but still nowhere near Robertson’s dreams!

Something that caught my eye though was when it was talking about the regional fuel levy, it mentioned that this would be offset by the removal of the transport levy from rates bills. This is the first I’m hearing of this actually being removed as I don’t believe anyone has questioned this yet. It was only planned to go for 3 years or until a regional fuel levy was put in place, but what is the chance of it actually being removed?

      Are you blind or innumerate?? Look at that link. NZD:TWI has dropped from 79 pre Taxinda to 72 now, and has risen by a stunning 0.2 today. So a ~9% fall over past 3 months followed by a ~0.2% upswing today? Given usual variability in trading there is nothing to indicate that the falling trend has ended. Labour’s woeful policies mean there is a lot of reason to think it will continue going down.

    Petrol prices go up and down regularly, and more often than not because of international trends rather than government policy. The petrol price was way up at points during National’s first and second terms, leading to calls for petrol companies to be regulated on prices. ps, Pope Paul VI made certain predictions about the things that would happen when The Pill and other forms of contracption were adopted. In 1968 he wrote Humanae Vitae.

In section 17 of the document, he also made the following four, much-talked-about predictions of what would happen in society as a result of widespread contraceptive use:

1) An increase in marital infidelity.

2) A general lowering of moral standards.

3) A loss of respect for women (man would “reduce her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires”).

  Right, so prior to the 1960’s women were not abused? The truth is that social sanctions regarding sex before marriage often resulted in women being sexually assaulted or raped, but instead of the men being brought to any real justice, they could often get a slap on the wrist, if anything, and the women were labeled as sluts and immoral sinners who did not deserve sympathy. Prostitutes could be raped with immunity, again because they were immoral women. In the past, when Christianity reigned over our culture, someone like Weinstein would never have been exposed because he was a man with power and women who got themselves into bad situations were blamed for having loose morals. I don’t know who Ben Shapiro is, but he’s clearly a bit thick.

    I would guess that there are more abortions that come about from failed contraception and sex out of wedlock than there are that take place between a married couple. Abortion is like the safety fallback when the first line of contraception (the pill, condoms) fails.
    
    Personally, I don’t buy into the “backstreet abortion” excuse, that you should make something legal because otherwise people might get hurt doing the thing illegally. It’s a poor argument for legalizing something. A similar argument was used last month with the idea for setting up stations for testing drugs so that illegal drug-takers knew what they were taking was safe. Yes, we have to make sure that people are safe, but not to the point where they are encouraged to do illegal things. And not as a reason to make those things legal.
    
    ie, if there are less abortions, then there are less abortions to be “botched”. I think society has to change its mindset – to become more moral again and to respect women, basically.
    
    WHat I’m trying to say is that if people followed Biblical principles – no sex before marriage, being faithful in marriage, etc, then we’d have less abortions and women would also be safer. In fact, we most likely wouldn’t have things like AIDS.

      No, it’s plays no part at all, because such things used to happen prior to social liberalism, and they happened with as much or even more frequency. They were just not exposed because it was dangerous for women to make complaints, (let alone gay men making complaints against someone like Kevin Spacey) unless they were extremely rich and/or politically powerful. And that reason, power, is the the only real reason for the abuse. That’s why abuse of women and children has also been carried out by powerful conservative people, and why the Catholic church has been exposed as a child abuse factory. You can’t blame social liberalism for the child abuse in the Catholic church, so it must be something else. And it is. Power. It’s always about power.

    Couldnt agree more. Why the hell we are allowed to own a port and an airport while tapping taxpayer is an outrage. The shareholdings should have been listed and maybe CCC keep a small shareholding just to remind them how useless they are owning businesses.
    My point is its always the bloody arts and corporate boxes that come first and the “insurance proceeds” from damaged sports facilities isnt used for new sporting facilities in a timely fashion.

EG as our wages go up so does the price of a latte, but we all “earn” extra money so we can pay for the higher price of the latte.
But it makes that latte dearer for tourists, who already find NZ an expensive place for food and drinks.

  All rational analysis is against the survival of Tesla – they are currently valued at something like 50 times what other companies are on a per annual car manufactured basis. But he also has a lot of admiration and love from the people who believe in his big dreaming vision, and who are as a group perhaps knowingly/charitably working to keep him afloat in spite of the financial peril. I wouldn’t bet against Tesla surviving the next year. Though if we do have a recession in 2018 Tesla is likely screwed.

        The loan was around $465 Million from the Dept of Energy.Not ‘Most of’ $5 Billion. Tesla repaid it by selling stock and raising money with Convertable Notes.
        Roughly half of the $5 billion went to Tesla. The other half to Solar City.
        It’s incentives, tax breaks etc etc.
        If he can’t sort out the production problems he’s got and raise more money he’s probably stuffed.
        It’s all very well taking orders and promising cars but if you can’t make them, you don’t get paid.

‘Lord Jacob Rothschild and four other people are feared dead after a plane and helicopter crashed in mid-air over the Rothschild estate in Buckinghamshire on Friday afternoon.

Wreckage from both aircraft fell from the sky after local residents reported hearing a loud bang shortly after midday. According to authorities, the pilot of the helicopter and its single passenger, as well as the pilot and a passenger of the plane all died in the crash.

A local resident, speaking to reporters, said: “My father heard a loud bang. My mother said a man, who I think was someone who had been out walking nearby, then went running up to the manor to say there had been a crash.”

“It didn’t happen directly over the grounds, but in woodland nearby. My father ran up to the scene. Everyone is helping the emergency services.”

Rescue workers had launched the fire brigade’s drone over the fallen wreckage in a bid to locate any survivors, but it is understood no one was taken to hospital.

Flight data shows a two-seater helicopter was flying at 1,025ft in the area at the time, but suddenly went of radar shortly after 12 noon. It had only been in the air for 15 minutes.

The plane that crashed is believed to be a Cessna 152, a popular training aircraft which has space for only one pilot and one passenger.

A Cessna 152 took off from Wycombe Air Park around the same time as the helicopter. It disappeared from radar at the same time as the helicopter.

The plane thought to have been involved was made in 1982. The helicopter feared to have crashed was built earlier this year.

Staff from the Waddesdon Estate, which is managed by a foundation set up by the eminent Rothschild family, helped direct emergency vehicles to the scene of the tragedy as police threw up a massive cordon around the area to preserve the scene.

The grand country manor house, which was used in the filming of The Crown and The Queen starring Helen Mirren, is understood to have been hosting a Christmas Market at the time of the crash.

Staff from the Air Accident Investigation Branch have been drafted in to begin an inquiry into what led to the mid-air collision.

A spokesman for the AAIB said: ‘The Air Accidents Investigation Branch is sending a team to investigate a mid-air collision involving an aircraft and a helicopter near Aylesbury.’

RAF Halton, which is around 10 miles away, said no military aircraft had been involved.

A spokesman said: ‘We can confirm that neither of the aircraft concerned has a connection with either our air force nor the military, and this is as much as we know at this time.’ (1)

Catholic school forced to cover up statue after ‘unfortunate’ design

A catholic school in Adelaide has been forced to cover up a brand new statue after the unfortunate placement of a loaf of bread caused a stir online.

Blackfriars Priory School in Prospect unveiled the statue of St Dominic last week, in which the religious icon is depicted handing a young boy a loaf of bread.

But due to a major design flaw one could be forgiven for thinking the 12th century Saint was holding something a lot less appropriate, news.com.au reported.

The school has since been forced to cover the statue with a black cloth after students were found taking inappropriate photos on Friday and this week it was completely cordoned off, according to The Advertiser.

Surely someone, at some point, thought: how might this look?
