        She single handedly took leadership of an absolutely fucked Labour Party only a couple of months before the election and now she is Prime Minister….an amazing feat.

        It’s so sad. We have a new Govt and PM that we should support and be proud of.
        
        Unfortunately thanks to a rejected angry little man who was seeking payback we finished up with a bunch of rejects.

    How about learning from the mistake of not holding the main “centre right” party to some principles? Just giving them “two ticks blue” mindlessly one election after another after another when they are doing nothing to roll back the socialists last onslaught, is asking for, positively begging for, the next onslaught. Get involved, harass your local representative, harass the party aparatchiks, promote alternatives (and potential coalition partners) like ACT or a successor.

        I am not one of the two downtickers. But I have argued this point many times before.
        
        There is a world of difference between going down fighting, and making arguments (on which the facts and evidence are overWHELMINGLY on your side); and capitulating and even worse, internalising your political enemies smear tactics against honourable people (out on the real right) who actually stick to facts and evidence. Of course there is now no hope for fact-based, evidence-based policy to be a winning platform, because National has endorsed the packs of lies in one policy area after another. So Don Brash really, really IS a “racist” rather than someone who sticks to historical fact – because National has joined in the chant from the Left’s SJW’s with “yeah, we hate him and his RACISM too!!!!” This is just one example – another would be the Nats embargoing “denier” Climate scientists (actually the real honest climate scientists).
        
        Their virtue-signalling like a pack of Pavlov dogs in response to every PC, lefty wuss MSM talking-head bell-ringing, is every bit as sickening as Vichy France acting as the Nazis cats-paw for several years, rationalising their position as “oh well, Nazism is the wave of the future anyway, we are just being enlightened by joining it”.
        
        Krazykiwi below nailed it. If the NZ voters ever wake up, things will have to have become a lot worse, but I doubt they ever will wake up. The people having been brainwashed and fed lies right from primary school for several generations, means that Venezuela-type dystopias have no hope of correct reform, they just lurch from one scapegoat to the next. National are very responsible in NZ for having effectively endorsed LIES in policy area upon policy area.

      When Labour are in charge the burner is on medium, and our socialist environment warms quickly.
      
      When National regain control the burner is turned down a bit, and our socialist environment warms are little more slowly.
      
      But it continues to get hotter.
      
      It won’t be until voters wake up and say “hey – we’re cooking! How did this happen?!?” that we’ll see the emergence of a economically liberal, fiscally conservative party.
      
      Of course by that time we’ll have started to feel a little of what the Venezuelans have experienced, as a result of their burner being on full for a couple of decades

        That is what was happening in the period 1950 to 1984. It wasn’t until Muldoon was tipped out that we were made to realise how bad things were.
        
        The problem is Kiwis (like other Western Democracies) don’t really like the medicine and would rather have warm fuzzy socialism, where there is always some rich person who is not paying “their fair share” and must be made to pay more tax. The problem is this very line is a lie on two counts, because:
        1, The rich do pay their fair share, in fact they pay in vastly more tax than they ever receive in benefits or government services;
        2. There is only a limited pool of rich people in our economy, so the bulk of the burden is always shouldered by the middle, and always will be.

      Nice try Philbest but is all a result of the failed MMP version adopted by NZ. Many could see the possibility of a Toxic Trio by wasting votes on pointless forms of protest. The true MMP system without a failed algorithm would have prevented the pending rewinding of NZ. Lets recall the laughter when it was first mooted that the Commie Chick might be the next Prime Minister as she started to finally be noticed.
      The laughter was no hollow gesture since many had seen her woeful performance in the House for so long. Enter Mr 7% and all that laughter got louder when watching old WP drunk with power. Hangovers for us but so many bottom lines are nothing more than overhang for him.

        1. A grand coalition again; or
        2. Going with the Alt right AfD (which would be problematic in Germany and Europe).

  On the surface the job seems a doodle – no boss, no timeclocks, staff who will smooth things for you, arrange travel maintain order (H2) and maintain sanctity. Also an undreamed of salary and a chauffeur driven car at your disposal. You can do whatever takes your fancy. You can preach to the world, read plays and duck having to do *real* work. Your Ministers can ‘just do it’ and do not need much attention – yet.
  Trouble is when you are in a CEO role it is over to you to maintain relationships with those who matter (and not just leaders of other nations) and be aware of what can go wrong. You do not have a boss to guide and direct things, you are supposed to have the skills and experience to manage yourself. You will find some other people a pain in the backside – you cannot expect H2 to sort them out for you, it is your job to relate to them and find out what their genuine concerns are.
  The longer you keep flitting around and not concentrate to the job in hand the worse things will become. You gave too much away to Winston and this is coming home to roost – you cannot expect Grant to somehow find the money for Winston’s and your Ministers’ spending desires.
  Or is this all too hard so the easiest thing is to just keep your head in the sand.

  The flaw was in the voters not being savvy enough to understand that nothing is “free”, communism is destructive and that selfies are no substitute for experience.
  
  That’s why politics is cyclic: people forget, then they learn again. Part of that is individuals actually forgetting, part is due to changes in demographics (ie. young people who have never experienced mortgages in the 10-20% range now having the vote).

        Fine. I am trying to provoke interest in Peter’s legal competence. I don’t see what conspiracy there could be. It is perfect lawfully for prospective coalition parties to have prior talk, understandings and even agreements. Prior disclosure is not required either although that may affect voter attitudes subsequently.
        
        But the issue of the mental health, age, infirmity and legal capacity to enter into and decide such arrangements as emerged is one of law. It has nothing to do with conspiracy unless another party was aware of defects and proceeded with that knowledge.

      As long as this sort of post is largely in jest, a sour jest sure, but basically a troll on those on the left who carried on this way numerous times, one can let it pass.
      
      However we have a system, a legitimate way that governments are changed, and that was followed. Ardern is indeed the Prime Minister and whether or not we wish it wasn’t so, that is how it is.
      
      What most concerns me is that this governments possible incompetence and possible short lifetime will allow the National party to ignore their own poor performance and faults. Every government needs, it seems, the shock of losing an election in order to focus their attention back on one thing that gets overlooked over and over again – that they owe their position to their voters, and they really need to reflect and attend to the concerns of those people, not to their own personal needs.

    Maybe, but I’m still concerned about Winston’s role. We have been delivered a government unfit for purpose.
    Was Winston well enough to make the decision he did? If we are dealing with someone who had an aberration how can we protect against that?
    Can the Governor General revisit the matter or is it one for the Courts or are we just stuck with it? What about some form of impeachment/climb-back/recall/judical review process?
    I suspect at present we are powerless–even the army are toothless.

        And arguably the last time it should have been applied was when David Lange went wandering off the reservation defying a cabinet decision with his “cup of tea” in January 1988.

        1. The cabinet, including the great (sic) constitutional scholar Geoffrey Palmer did nothing due to self-preservation. To have faced down Lange would have risked him resigning/having to sack him…which would have split the government and forced them to go to the polls and inevitable defeat. So they decided to carry on for another 2 years nine months with a lame-duck government.
        
        Is the same reason why the Labour caucus did nothing.
        
        And National were equally divided at the time so they didn’t press it.
        
        So it was never brought to the GG.

  High personal taxation, low skill immigration which lowers wage levels and pushes up housing costs, petrol levies, GST, then high tax on alcohol and cigarettes. just operating a bank account is harder for low income earners.
  
  Working for Families tax credits hit those who want to earn extra money.
  
  Now the new set of mongs coming in are heaping more costs onto everyone which the low income earners get hit the hardest
  
  It is a nasty circle for the poor in NZ with the state hitting them very hard.

    The unpopular fact is (unpopular here at least) that poverty rose under National, and if National had adopted the ACT type of policies some here want it would have risen much higher, as it did in the early late eighties and nineties under Rogernomics and Ruthenomics. Neither pure capitalism nor pure socialism is the answer. The current government may or may not have the right mix, only time, not blind ideology, will tell us that for sure. But given the undeniable rise in poverty over the last few years, they deserve a chance to have a go.

    When I was at uni the Student Union offered “hardship grants” to those students suffering hardship. Any student could walk in and ask for one. Proof was a bank statement showing low funds.
    
    A good number of my fellow students transferred all their cash into another account, or opened a new account for the purpose, and claimed the grant.
    
    Unsurprisingly, the uptake of the hardship grant was MASSIVE. At no point did the union query the reason. Instead, they went bleating to the press about how student poverty was going up, and record numbers of students were applying for hardship grants.
    
    On the plus side, the local pubs did well out of it.

I was really interested by the response to my comments in Saturdays GD, on Lorde. I did not anticipate that there was such sophistication of musical taste on this forum – I half expected contributors to pile into me for demeaning Lorde, but instead I got piled into for being too kind to her! I implied that she might be capable of learning and growing as a musician if she got into Joni Mitchell’s circles instead of Taylor Swift’s.

But this was taken as an insult to Joni Mitchell and far too generous an assessment of Lorde’s inherent potential! I am sure on some other forums it would have gone some other way, but it is the KB response that makes me see potential for music discussions on here on a regular basis. Obviously experienced enthusiasts who know their stuff!

  By the way, I do not listen to contemporary pop music from choice, but some places I spend time in for other reasons, have it blaring constantly. I wish there could be some kind of organised public push-back demanding better quality music in places where it is inescapable. I am sure some retailers who play classy music, get an “image” gain from it. Perhaps there needs to be some polling done about what most people really want, the results of which might hopefully wake up the executives of organisations about potential effects on business levels.
  
  The people who “want” contemporary pop are mostly so ignorant anyway, that they wouldn’t know the difference if classic but groovy music was playing instead. In fact it might help develop their tastes. I know plenty of people younger than myself who cringe now, at the contemporary pop they were into when they were teenagers.
  
  But the older you are, the higher quality the contemporary pop was when you were a teenager yourself. This is not just an opinion, it is demonstrated by the enduring nature of the music concerned. If covers bands all over the world are still doing a song 30 years later, it is obviously a good one. If a new song sold millions at the time but is dead and gone forever now, the sales at the time are testimony to the ignorance of young music consumers, not to the quality of the music.

    The push back has to come from us, the customers. I tell shops and cafes if I find the music too loud or brash, and only stay if they’re at least prepared to turn it down. Often the problem is this: the customers in restaurants and cafes in my ‘burb are middle aged and elderly and would like a peaceful atmosphere for dining, but the staff are young and probably want music that gives them some energy.

I have experienced youngsters hearing a jazz recording playing for the first time, thinking the sound (eg of a guitar solo) must be computer-generated because it is impossible to play an actual instrument (like a guitar) that fast / that many notes / that harmonic richness…..
      
      And the first time they hear a boy band singing vocal harmonies, they think this is unique genius, and if you play them a bit of Take 6 or “The Real Group” or The New York Voices, all their synapses fry.

Why is it that the Pike River families now accept that safety concerns might prevent re entry into the mine, when that is what the previous government was telling them the whole time?

Could it be that some of them might have also been using their own situation (Knowingly or unknowingly) as an implement to attack a government they did not agree with, as much as the opposition might have been using them for their own purposes?

It just seems odd that when Labour come out with statements that mirror the statements under the last government, in particular, that safety must be considered first over the desire to recover remains, the response from the families is “We Understand” as opposed to “That’s not what you promised!”

I see NZME – this morning, is saying that Taxinderella is blaming the Australians for her huge and inept Stuff up over the Manus Island men.
This presumes that she has no idea what she is doing to our Country. Her hubris is beyond understanding as she cannot keep her mouth closed.
Why is it within one month she is becoming the most disliked, almost hated, of our Prime Ministers. So soon.

I am getting embarrassed by my Aussie cousins in Canberra. They cannot believe their luck as they have had to backfoot New Zealand for some time now.
Now they can kickback with a vengeance.
There will be consequences.

The many women who voted for her think she is the best thing since the wheel – how disappointed they are going to be.
She is becoming the most divisive politician for many years – probably since Muldoon and so quickly.
Very sad for our Country but that’s what Peters gave us.

Now Stuff has an opinion piece belittling Tames interview, but the truth is that Jacinda tried to get some laughs at Trumps expense by recounting a story which appears to have been a third party story which she won’t back up. This is absolutely relevant and Tames did a good job. It shows her professionalism and her respect for other world leaders. In early comments on his super secret, Winston told how he was accompanied by his partner when an official filled a super application form out for him in 2010, then later said the mistake could have occurred after 2013 when he changed the way he filed his returns.

So he made an untenable change in explanations, with around a three year gap between them, when he would have had an overpayment amount, and by dividing that into the total owing, should have given the number of payments, and so the period involved.

As much as someone apparently leaked that the situation had actually occurred, Winston’s confused explanations probably did as much to supposedly damage his “reputation” as did anything else.

That reputation of course includes accusations that then PM John Key must have had the SIS spy on him to know he had three times met with Kim Dotcom, but Winston forgetting he himself had informed Rachel Glucina, then the Herald gossip columnist, at a Waitangi Day function.

This time, Winston should have been able to say to media –
“A problem occurred with my superannuation payments, but I have corrected the matter to the Department’s satisfaction within 24 hours, and it would be silly if your interest in this completed matter should not last longer than that.”

If Winston couldn’t understand what happened to his super, how was he ever involved in legislation relating to it?
And if the matter was personal and confidential, that is what he should have told media, and nothing more.
But he didn’t …

  Who can understand WINZ forms, rules and practices? They are now looking at the income in private companies as being the personal income of their “clients”. The corporate veil has been torn away. They are looking at the company expense items and current accounts in determining how much the company income should be for their assessment.
  
  The law under which WINZ operate is very obscure and there seems to be a set of internal rules now reduced down to “it’s on the screen”.
  It is not possible to get a clear statement from WINZ to check the amounts paid.
  
  That was a similar to a problem that has surfaced in IRD in the past: excess bureaucratic diligence embarrassed the government as it caused bad odour with the public. A change of Commissioner was required to fix that.

      No.
      WINZ do not give details. They assess and clawback starting at the next payment. You may only find this out a few days before. They tell me that their recovery continues throughout the extended appeal process which can take months. They will not stop this despite any dispute.
      Details require an appointment and even then it is not possible to get a printed assessment showing how they arrived at the amount they are going to deduct. “It’s in the computer”. Unfortunately it’s not in the public domain.
      The law is too obscure to be able to check their assessment/determination and some is obviously discretionary. The rules need to be certain, unchanging and public.
      
      I hadn’t realised how bad they had become internally. This will cause serious trouble with the public and redound on any government.

        If this is true, KevOB, and other readers, I withdraw my comments (above) regarding this particular aspect, but would question why the one Member of Parliament so specifically linked to superannuation legislation can tolerate the department working in such a way.
        
        Because of that and the fact there are about 52,000 other overpayments reported as occurring within a year, shouldn’t this be one of the things being made a priority in Labour/NZF/Green Government’s first 100 days?
        
        Among 52,525 overpayments in the year to June 30, 2017, new figures show: an estimated total of $32,828,125

        Sofia’s 10:47 comment is interesting. I can ring up and the answering staffer has access to my file and details of my latest contact. There was even a note saying that I could be given some information about the items the basis of my recent -$40/fortnight surprise. I had to get an appointment to get an inadequate small printout of their numbers–no textual background. I’m still in the dark.
        
        Phone contact suggests that staffers may have fairly free access internally. I know from my days at IRD I acquired info about a politician accidentally which left me uncomfortable. Certain staffers maintained those files but office gossip did the rest.

    I hope this isn’t too long but here is an example I came upon.
    Alan lent his brother Brian $50,000 about ten years ago. Brian never repaid a penny. Charlie, the old man, while sucking on a gasper solemnly said to Brian that he must repay Alan $100 per week or the consequences in the future would be unpleasant. By this stage Alan had a $60,000 job three pre schoolers and two mortgages. As Charlie’s accountant I stepped in and said, no. It must be only $95 per week. If the interest free loan repayments, which are of course tax free, exceed $5000 per year the loan payments are counted as income for Working For Families Tax Credit purposes and the 25% abatement rate for WFF will carve $1300 out of the $100 per week repayments annually.

“Christchurch social services are warning people not to give money to an increasing number of street beggars, most of them not genuinely homeless and “making a jolly good living out of it”.

Wasn’t it that nasty heartless uncaring National Government that was forcing homeless people into begging? This was the daily message that Stuff, RNZ and TVNZ pushed constantly in their propaganda.

And now it seems they are not really homeless – in fact, “People should not give beggars money as most of them were not homeless and the money fuelled their alcohol or drug addiction, he said. “[For] most of them it is their business and they are making a jolly good living out of it. ”

    I don’t know how you can say the PM is a liar, she was “absolutely transparent and open” that there was never a situation where she would lie as a politician.
    
    Just have a look here (at 2.53) during the election debates. At 3.16 it was particularly delicious as Jacinda lied by saying she’d “never told a lie in politics”.

The first says that the Salvation Army is handing out 28,000 emergency food parcels a year.

This sound s a big number but it actually works out at one parcel a day for every one in 25,000 families.

The second link quotes a Matthew Mark (great name for a Christian btw), who is quoted as saying that the number of people who are homeless has remained stable, but the number of beggars has increased.

Now, I’m not saying that poverty is not a problem, but I can’t see how we can get a grip on the problem and develop appropriate policy responses when there is so much poor quality and conflicting information flying around.

(the same applies to the debate about how we use and charge for water, but that is another matter).

  Perhaps the beggars do it to obtain extra cash – it is relatively easy and seems to be fairly lucrative and police powers to deal with beggars have been eroded over the years.
  Seems too some racketeering could be creeping into the begging ‘business’.

    The proof of the pudding will be in the eating. Moodys and Standard & Poor will most probably have the last word on this matter. If they rate NZ JJJ- (there is no such official rating but I mean ‘junk’) then NZ will find it hard and expensive to borrow money.
    Given that some people make things happen, some see things happen and some wondered what has happened, I see Grant Robertson a few years down the track wondering what has happened.

But the bit that got my attention was the huge volume of methane belching from the oceans floor as organic material breaks down.
Umm … a few cows in NZ farting away would be astronomically insignificant compared to the entire fucking oceans area.

Mugabe has announced he is NOT stepping down. I guess the Parliament will now move to impeach him. There are plenty of grounds to do that. He should also forfeit all property he has stolen from the State. He has already been stripped of membership of his ZANU-PF Party.

        I agree with everyone who dislikes Mugabe, but I merely make the point that if he can be removed by popular protest, surely American democrats—people who value democracy, not the collapsing party that has commandeered the name—can also get rid of Trump, who makes Robert Mugabe look like Albert Schweitzer.

  You relly have to look a bit deeper to understnad the situation better.
  
  Sure Mugabe is bad news, as is his wife.
  
  But the real motivation behind this soft coup is to give other ZANU-PF “veterans” a chance to plunder the coffers.
  
  ZANU-PF were never “freedom fighters” fighting for the rights of black Zimbabweans. They were always after the power and a chance to put their hands in the till. They just exploited the injustices as a way to get support.
  
  That is objectively measurable. If they were really freedom fighters they would have stopped the fighting as soon as their liberation from white rule was achieved.
  
  Instead they just ratcheted it up a notch and took on the other groups that were vying for power.

  Argh Auckland Council sucks. Mine have gone up 40% but in our area we have no footpaths, no sewerage, they stopped mowing the berms which we now do ourselves, and volunteers look after the council owned communityhall, the playgroup paid for the playground, and volunteers put in the only picnic tables. Good advise for households not to borrow or spend more on these paper valuations but will council follow the same advise.

    We could all join the Auckland Ratepayers Alliance. Our rates are huge, but I don’t want to be paying Auckland Council for anything but the basic stuff. If people want to go to a concert or a festival or an exhibition etc, they can pay for it. That way everyone can save on rates and have money to spend on things that actually interest them.

    SK, I feel your pain, we live in North Rodney. SuperCity rates to us is theft at a totally new level, as we pay a great deal for very limited services. Auckland is a parasite that extracts money & does not provide the services paid for.
    
    I heard news of the latest assessments last week & was wound up hearing clowns from Manurewa complaining that they pay $1500 in rates & that get nothing. My family & I pay considerably more in rates and I would happily swap what we get in Rodney for their nothing in East Manurrwa.

We should all support it.
Shame on the government for wasting $3m on pocket money for a few criminal agitators in another country.
That $3m would have gone a long way to giving a gift to a lot of disadvantaged NZ children.

“It would be safe to say that Clague has had the blow-torch applied to him in terms of a much wider audience being aware of his actions. In terms of reputational hits he is damaged goods.”

Ok, here’s the thing! We can bleat here until this circus self destructs, but in the meantime, we end up with Manus Island queue jumpers (please call them what they are).

The Min of OUR Finances will have played fast and loose with ‘other peoples money’ and god knows what we’ll look like when it comes to credit worthiness.

We could start by organising a petition through this site stating we are against the Manus Island meddling. Get it presented to Parliament and stop this in its tracks.

Then we do it again and again…

So David Parker toured the proposed America’s Cup sites and has said that he expects to see revised plans to value environmental services and not more water space being taken up with piers.

Turns out touring with Parker was the action groups op Stealing Our Harbour and Urban Auckland. Once again we’re going to see a small group of no-hopers influencing something beneficial for the city.

Before this, I thought the chance of it not being in NZ was pretty low. I’m now reversing this and expect to see it contested in Italy as there is no way with all of these idiots in with their 2c will we see it going ahead.

    Please don’t fall for the delusion that ‘capital gains’ are anything beyond housing inflation. I see some people here believing it and supporting CGT. That would be devastating for Mum and Dad rental owners who have little other income.

Multiculturism has run amok in English schools. You have to wonder if NZ is far behind. The Guardian reports on a finding by Britain’s Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills (Ofsted) about Birmingham state schools. Ofsted’s inquiry found:

… that in Park View school, the sexes are segregated inside the classroom, their sports events are scheduled for different days and that a “madrasa curriculum” denies evolutionary theory and omits reproduction from biology classes. One teacher has handed out a worksheet stating that women must always obey their husbands, and another has been using school facilities to copy Osama bin Laden DVDs.

The article recalls Ray Honeyford, a head teacher who was villified 30 years ago for arguing in the media that schools existed to teach rather than promote cultural diversity.

The Guardian report is headed: “Was the 1980s Bradford headteacher who criticised multiculturalism right?”

  I stopped being under 18 more than fifty years and I take good care of my teeth.
  However as everyone knows a trip to the dentist can result in jaw dropping bills to pay. A casual filling here and there; maybe a crown or two. Even locking eyes with the dentist is a hundred bucks.
  So I won’t care who was advocating subsidised dental treatment, even Slippery Steve Joyce, I’m in agreement.

UNSAFE FOR CYCLISTS AND DRIVERS! These cycle ways which cut across driveways to private homes, are dangerous because drivers will reverse out of their driveways directly on to the cycleway.

Auckland Transport, in a letter from David Nelson, Group Manager, Major Projects, dated 2 November 2017, to Lisa Prager, response to CAS-598750-Q7L3V0 – Engineering of West Lynn Shops:

“…. It is not safe to have cars reversing out into a cycle lane. …”

UNSAFE AND UNSUSTAINABLE FOR TREES!
Trees have already been chopped down in Surrey Crescent on Old Mill Rd.
Locals are also protesting to save local trees.

UNSAFE AND UNSUSTAINABLE FOR WATERWAY (MEOLA CREEK)
The grass berms – which were increased to make more permeable surface to absorb stormwater, have now been partially replaced with cycleway asphalt – which will arguably increase stormwater runoff down into Meola Creek.

UNSUSTAINABLE FOR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS – WHO WILL LOSE PARKING TO MAKE WAY FOR PROPOSED CYCLEWAY!

A court ruling that might have paved the way for thousands of rent refunds has been overturned, leaving the tenant with a $10,000 bill to pay her landlord.

A Dunedin landlord was ordered to refund $10,000 of rent back to a tenant, Natalie Parry, because she had been living in a property with unpermitted alterations. Parry had stayed for 29 weeks.

Vic Inglis and his wife bought the property as is. They did not realise that the alterations were different from plans submitted to the Dunedin City Council, and did not request a LIM report.

The Tenancy Tribunal said the tenancy was unlawful because of the unpermitted work and the tenant was entitled to a full refund of all rent paid.

    I heard of a wild passionate night where paper was unwrapped from a pound of butter and used to lublicate raw “parts”.
    
    The butter was later re-wrapped and returned to the fridge where it was happily later used by flat mates who did not have a clue.
    
    I know the couple concerned and believe what happened.

I’m confused. Goff, an ex Labour MP I would assume would be in tune with Jacinda in trying to cool the housing market. So his bunch push the RVs up by about 45%. Now, no-one is going to sell an Auckland property below RV, unless it’s a forced sale. So, with the stroke of a pen, he has established the minimum sales price at 45% above the July 2014 RV. Thanks mate, I owe you one.
