Today is the day Mr Peters will make a mistake. He could pick the wrong horse or in this instance wrong coalition.
At 72 years old ,and wanting a quiet time for peaceful walks with his female partner and doggie,in his age of the final years of a quality of life.
Why enjoin with a cauldron of screaming skulls and forever in a almost daily disagreement with power hungry coalition partners.
Surely for a quiet life ,and peace of mind there should be the only one correct decision.
He should support Bill English and the National Party who got 56 seats and almost 200,000 more votes than screaming skull “Commie Chic “Comrade Arderns Labour Party.

  Winston has assembled the NZF board to announce their decision, while Bill English stated this morning that negotiations are nowhere near complete. For example no discussions have been held with National on what portfolios Winnie or his other NZF would like.
  
  Winnie is trying to look like he is running the show announcing to the media a decision will be made today. Looks instead like Winnie is delusional unless he intends to announce today he is going with Cindy and her lefty mob.

  On my head I can understand how Peters’ choice can be viewed as either an entertaining train wreck, a death hug or a dance down the aisle etc….. but my heart tells me that NZ’s political system is deeply in the shit.

  If the whispers are true, his demands are totally out of proportion for an outfit rejected by ~92% of the electorate. It all sounds too much like the flea on the tail trying to wag the dog.
  
  IMO, it’s a pity National didn’t pull out of all coalition discussions and tell Winston he was welcome to try and work with Taxinda and the Gweens. Because whoever sits on the Treasury benches alongside the venal narcissist, will be poisoned by his chalice for several elections to come.

    I’ve come to the same conclusion Elaycee, despite having spent the six months leading up to the election actively campaigning for a National-led government.
    
    As much as I would prefer Bill English to continue as Prime Minister, I believe the price he and National would pay in the long term would be too high. I’d far rather see National go into opposition with a rejuvenated team of 56 MP’s (including 10 new MP’s, with Nicola Willis waiting on the sideline for a couple of inevitable resignations), and well placed to take the fight to a LabourGreenNZF hydra.
    
    I would be prepared to wager we will be going back to the polls sooner than the anticipated date of the 2020 General Election, such would be the hydra’s instability, especially when the opposition turns the heat up. Add to that Peters’ age and clearly failing health, and NZF will be on life support.

      I honestly don’t understand your logic, KS. If National have a minority of members compared to a Lab/NZF/Green government, then how could they ‘take the fight’ to them? Sure, they could form arguments on the select committees, but that’s about it. They wouldn’t be able to beat down any legislation on a vote and they wouldn’t be able to introduce their own legislation, except by hoping that a member’s bill will get selected by a random ballot. In addition to this, whatever the National party did or said would either be ignored or misrepresented by the country’s press, who would be concentrating on blushingly masturbating over Peters’ latest mess ups, Adern’s beautiful teeth or the pretty Green refugee’s opinions on whatever.
      
      Where’s the upside in any of this?

        Dave – if my interpretation of what I read a week or two ago is right seats on Select Committees are allocated on the basis of seats held so National will in effect dominate the important select committees and the best `the hydra’ will manage is a stalemate position.
        
        Unfortunately I cannot remember where I saw this but I am sure DPF could expand on this.

        That’s correct pdm. As the largest party in the Parliament, National would effectively control the select committee process. They would also have the biggest allocation of oral questions, and they would be robust in opposition by sheer weight of numbers.
        
        The size of their caucus would also give them advantages in terms of resources allocated to them by the Parliamentary Service, and they would most certainly be the largest single opposition party since MMP began. Any weaknesses by Ministers would be exploited relentlessly, and with the general absence of ministerial experience from Labour, Green and NZF MP’s, those weaknesses would be numerous.

Well I wonder what Winston will say about which Party he will go with after Bill English has stated the Coalition talks have not finished yet and there is still a lot to be agreed on. So has Winston been leading the public down the road or has he pulled a swifty on National and has decided already that he is going with Labour and the Greens.

    Poor leadership. I had hope that Shaw would lead the Greens in a more independent direction, instead of being tied at the hip to Labour, which has done them no good over the years. It neuters the power of the party. But he has if anything made it worse. Imagine the power they would have had over Labour if they had made it clear that they might go with National? Or the power over National by giving them an alternative to Peters? Not to mention pulling the rug from under Peters so he could not be kingmaker alone. I really hope there are people in the Greens taking note of all of this, of how weak the party is because of this strategy of tying themselves exclusively to Labour.

      Incorrect, the family is at the heart oif virtually every culture that exists or existed. It may include multiple “wives” or very rarely, husbands, but the family is the basic unit. It extends to the wider family and typically surviving grandparents were included, but wider groupings were typically subservient to the family itself.

        The OP is correct. The nuclear family is a recent invention. There has been some debate among historians as to whether it post-dates the revolution – and perhaps arose as a result of it – or whether it predates the revolution and helped give rise to it.
        
        And not all societies have families as we know the concept.

        I said the nuclear family, not families in general. Family was defined more widely prior to industrialisation and included grandparents and other relatives. This is still true in many places, China for example, and much of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. And in tribal societies the tribe itself is considered a family. The nuclear family definition of mum, dad and kids is a recent concept and mostly a recent Western one. Family has been defined in a wide variety of ways over the centuries.

        I don’t know anywhere it isn’t true. I haven’t come across cultures where grandparents are not considered part of the family.

    The local MSM must know by now who has arrived in Wellington for the so-called NZF Board Meeting. If not, they are even more incompetent than they are generally believed to be.
    
    But if they know the identities of the people arriving, why haven’t they published details that are obviously newsworthy – such as their names, genders, home locations, ages and occupations? There are only two reasons that would make much sense to me:
    (1) They are all politically biased in favour of a Labour-led Government, and will do anything asked of them to achieve that end; or
    (2) They have been threatened by Peters in some fashion, and are keeping silent in order to avoid future retribution from the man.

The more this goes on with Peters the more likely it is that he will sit on the cross benches. That way he may survive but even then it is unlikely.

If he does that National will govern but will be leg roped to do much with legislation. Could be a good thing in some ways

Meanwhile it looks highly likely a 31 year old Conservative ( Sebastian Kurz) has won the Austrian election and become Chancellor, with a strong anti immigration platform.
I suspect there was large element of the beltway crowd and the political elite becoming totally removed from the majority of voters —sounds familiar –USA & UK.

  The beltway elites don’t have to live in the same neighbourhoods that the hordes will be housed in and their children won’t have to compete for the shit jobs that the third worlders will be doing (if any).
  But at the dinner parties they host and at the charity boards they sit on ,they’ll be able to boast how much they care for the poor .
  Not that they ever cared for the domestic poor , they seem to think that solving the third world’s problems are a priority over their own long suffering citizens’ issues.

It’s interesting that 73 is considered to old in NZ politics but not so in America. I guess it’s part of the forlorn moon encompassing the prospect of being in opposition. A little hard to resist, or so hard to resist the thought that the MP could arguably have been allowed to disintegrate after JK’s effort of bringing it together. If Labour do form a Government I’m not entirely sure they will keep the Maori vote in the next election but if they do the road back for National maybe even harder. This is certainly part of the NZF/Labour negotiations. Labour misstepped with the Maori vote once and paid the price. Beneath the surface NZ is still unable to embrace its culture outside the beltway. We recently had here some derision as to what Maoridom is, I’m no expert but certainly to me it was captured by the Pioneer Battalion and later its successor the Maori Battalion something of that dignity and pride was expressed by Flavell in his concession of defeat. The Maori Party had ventured where no other party representing Maori had gone before. So perhaps symbolism for something broken or lost through lack of care. No lack of care by Chris Finlayson however, much despised here but a fearless bridge builder nevertheless. Then there has been the Pike River mine coming back through the words of 2 party leaders. DPF argued that if in opposition National should not change leaders. I agree but perhaps for different reasons than DPF because I see BE as a long term player and thinker for the benefit of the country that came into his own during the campaign. He stepped out from a big shadow, a different man from that person shadowed by JK but someone with a long term vision for NZ’s social and financial progress.
However, all said and done the election has yet to be finalised.

  Interesting post Nostalgia. Whilst Peters’ chronological age may be 72, Father Time, late nights, booze and smokes have ravaged him. He is clearly not in good health, and there still seems to be no succession plan in NZF to cope with Life After Winston. And LAW could be closer than anyone imagines.
  
  I agree with you about Bill English stayiong on the lead the opposition, if that is National’s lot. He is only 55, and has plenty of years left if that is what he chooses. He would lead a formidable opposition, and if National does end up in opposition, I can see further opportunities to refresh. For example, I doubt David Carter would want to remain if he is no longer Speaker.

The trolls were also instructed to use VPN’s — virtual private networks — for their posts in order to disguise their Russian origin. “If they caught you using a Russian IP address, you’d get a dressing down,” he said.

Among the major themes the trolls were to write about in their posts were guns and gays. “When it was gays, we almost always had to bring out the religious themes,” he said. “Americans are very religious, especially those [who post] on news sites and write comments. You had to write that sodomy is a sin. That could always get you a couple of dozen ‘likes.’”

I was very surprised that Winston stood this election-his health status was evident last time.
Westminster conventions give Bill English the right to approach the GG to attempt to form a government. MMP may have clouded this but the convention is fair.

Another problem with Winston now is aging and that shows up in his being querulous. I think Bill English is being smart appearing to accept/ignore Winston in his media perceived role. That avoids feeding irresponsible media and diverting Winston. Age can make for loss of attention and wandering minds.

Some “policies” may be flight of fancy but not appreciated as such. I am sure Bill English has the capacity to deal with Winston capably and respectfully as he enters his final term. I am equally uncertain about Jacinda that way. Winston does charm which may mislead Labour. Any fool through age having his policies acceded too could render a young government actually foolish. Add the Greens who are naturally playful and childish and that is a recipe for disaster NZ.

Today wisdom needs to prevail.

I see today there is a call for clarification on when unmarried couples actually begin their defacto relationship.

It seems that unlike marriage, where there is a clear legal contract date married couples relationship was cemented, the date a defacto relationship begins is not so clear and becomes an issue when they separate. Apparently the two individuals can have different ideas of when the relationship started and when they became defacto. The date can seriously affect the result of claiming joint assets. ?

Veteran journalist Sean Plunket has resigned from the Broadcasting Standards Authority without once sitting on the board.

The former broadcaster faced outrage after asking if “anyone else” felt for disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Speaking after his resignation, Plunket remained defiant. He did not regret the tweet and said the outrage was really just “a sadly predictable social media pile on”.

He resigned less than two weeks after he took a seat on the board, starting what was supposed to be his three-year-term. The authority’s board is responsible for ruling on official broadcasting complaints.

The BSA and Plunket issued a joint statement announcing his resignation on Friday afternoon. Plunket said earlier in the day that his future with the BSA was “up to them”. He later said the decision to resign was his, made in the interests of the authority.

        Also, although I know gays and am related to some, I do believe that gay behaviour especially the extreme sexual acts and amount of sexual partners they have is a form of mental illness. The Cubs go down – and it’s due to a leaking bullpen. Even bringing up former star starting pitcher Lackey did not get it done. In fact he’s the one who – with two out and a 3-2 pitch, gave away a walk, bringing up the most dangerous Dodger hitter – Turner – who promptly smashed a game-ending, bottom-of-the-9th 3-run home run. Before this game the Cubs bullpen had an ERA of 7, FFS! Their starters are like 1.9.

Same old story. When the Dodger bullpen is pitching you feel like even a one run lead is enough for them to defend – whereas the Cubs bullpen? Even a four run lead is not enough – and the Cubs batters are not getting even that off the Dodger’s starting pitchers.

And while Lackey has had a great career, he’s 39, and even last year the guy made me nervous every time he pitched. Always felt like he was on the verge of giving up runs, and today he planted one low-and-away in the strike zone. Turner, who had threatened all the Cubs pitchers all night, never looked like missing.

Onto Wrigley Field. But as well as Hendricks may pitch, it won’t fix save them from their other problems.

    If I wanted to be fair to the Cubs bullpen I could say that they’re not being handed any leads to defend or (in the case of the Nationals) very much of a lead – and that’s down to the Cubs batters not doing the business against the starting pitchers.
    
    BUT – even a frigging 4 run lead might not be enough to defend the way these guys are pitching. Watching the two bullpens today was cringe-inducing. The Dodgers guys were whacking out the Cubs with minimal pitches; 7-8 for an inning and that was it. The Cubs? They were painfully getting the Dodgers out each inning with perhaps 12 pitches – if they were lucky?
    
    And it’s obvious the Dodgers batters are grinding out the Cubs starters as well; refusing to chase balls, forcing strikes and thus making sure they’re pushed to 100+ pitches by the 6th inning – after which the Dodgers can feast on the bullpen. It’s strategically smart.
    
    By contrast the Dodgers can pull their starter after just five innings if he’s struggling – as Kershaw was yesterday and Hill today – because they know they’ve got strong relief and closing pitching all the rest of the way through the innings.

        It is a serious matter a so called centre – right government has failed at this.
        
        One important aspect of it is that the centre – left can now incorrectly portray the problem as a ‘market failure’ requiring totally unnecessary interventionist (e.g. Kiwibuild) solutions.

Just a thought. I feel that if Winnie goes with National NZ First will cease to exist after the next election. National would probably not get a 5th term so with National failing to win another term NZ First becomes irrelevant, because difficult for NZ first to say they can go with Labour if they have been supporting a National government for the past 3 years.
However the reverse is true.
But I prefer the reverse from a National Party point of view, National can revamp the party, make the labour government extremely accountable for everything they do. Question time in the house would suddenly become relevant, less patsy questions.
Winston would eventually pack a sad, Jacinda either is capable or quickly proves her ineptitude in the role and labour has a complete cleanout which is something they need, as does National , and thus we might in 2020 get back to some sort of normality with our Government acting in the best interests of New Zealanders, and not pussyfooting around the place because of Winston Peters.
The greens, well if they are bright they might reconsider the word “Green” and what it actually means and perhaps become a true environmental party and of relevance to both sides of the house and thus their options become larger.

A gardener got so fed up with his wife’s nagging he ran away from home and lived in the woods for ten years.

Malcolm Applegate, 62, was married to his wife for three years before upping sticks after the relationship reached breaking point.

He then made his way from Birmingham, where they lived, to London – making half the three-week journey on foot after his bike was stolen, the MailOnline reported.

Malcolm said: “I was married to her for three years, but unfortunately it got too much.

“First of all I met her in Eastbourne and I married her in Birmingham.

“For three years it was alright, we got on with one another and the gardening got too much for her.

“She said, ‘Why don’t we have more time together?’ I said, ‘How can I? I have been recommended to people’.

“I just upped and left, I got fed up with her because we used to get so many arguments.
‘It took me three weeks to get back to London.

“I didn’t lock my bike up in Oxford and someone helped themselves to it, so I had to walk back from Oxford.”

I’m at a checkout – paid and getting ready to leave. Checkout operator leaves without a word. A black woman – African – has walked up as operator left.

So now there’s no operator and she’s just standing there like the mouth breathing moron that she is – dazed and confused. And takes root at a now empty checkout. What would you do ?
I look at her with the ‘are you a total moron’ look. Nothing. She asks me – I think – if anyone is there or coming back.
Thick as pigshit – how did she get into this country ? Use your brain – there’s no-one there now, so now what should I do ? Er – find another checkout ? I say black – she was medium chocolate. Dairy milk ? Did she dress herself today ? One leg, one hole, yeah ? Did she go to school in her country of origin ?
