Climate scientists are warning we face an existential threat that requires immediate action; politicians are ignoring the science; liar-deniers are brainwashing the public. We need more scientists speaking out and challenging the politicians.

You didn’t have much influence on your advisee, John Key. He did nothing in office and bought a 6 litre Bentley on retirement.

Perhaps it’s not “overreach” that is the problem, but “underreach”. But there is no need to rationalise your own failure by attacking other scientists. Only electroconvulsive therapy would shock true deniers; science has no effect on them whatsoever. See:

  Where in Gluckman’s speech did he infer that which you infer? Nowhere! His speech could be (and should be) turned back on your own argument.
  
  There are certain words that come to mind when I think of people like you, who read a little on line, but have never look under a microscope to see the truth. Let’s start with sanctimonious. Perhaps even self-serving. Fear-Monger! Pagan-earth goddess! Swivel earred and git.

  It’s also rather worrying to note that when for once our police took time off from harassing motorists and ignoring low level crime and actually did something useful to protect our citizens, they have been pilloried almost constantly for doing so for the last ten years.

    Those raids were signed of by Cullen. Now Cullen didn’t do anything without Helen’s say so.
    That alone should make you suspicious.
    
    The name of the leader of the party of 60 that surrounded Rua’s Round house and murdered two of his sons was, well you guessed it, Cullen. An action that was urged on by the likes of Aparna Ngata .
    Cullen was the same man who was responsible for the shooting of the miners during the Waihi goldminers strike.
    
    And to make the conspiracy worse, Of course, Bains mother’s name was Cullen.
    
    Not a propitious name in NZ.

    Trouble here is, different people have different ideas on who is ‘dead wood’. Similarly with policy. It is very difficult for a party to be all things to all people, so some voters vote NZ First (for example) to get the policy outcomes they want (eg cut immigration) only to end up with a coalition they did not want.

NZ’s debt will rise again as the Government throws money at projects that have no return to the ecomony, tax take will drop and we in the provinces will be taxed to pay for Comrade Goffs wasteful council.   Happychappy, whether National is in Government or in Opposition for the coming term, I hope that it shows some fortitude and promotes a few simple rules (for ultimate legislation, whenever it has the numbers) to regulate the formation of a Government post each MMP Election: Examples:
  
  1. The Party with the highest number of confirmed seats after a General Election has a period of five clear working days following the final writ to form a coalition that the Governor-General is satisfied can be sworn in as the NZ Government.
  
  2. Failing that, the second-highest-polling Party has the next five clear working days to form such a coalition to the satisfaction of the Governor-General.
  
  3. If no Government coalition is ready to be sworn in after two such negotiation time-frames, the Governor-General is required to declare invalid the previously-conducted General Election and to require a fresh General Election to be held on the actual date 8 weeks after the polling day that produced the post-Election stalemate.
  
  4. Repeat the process if necessary.

Now with the help of the man who never was trustworthy in politics Winston Peters ,he has once more proven that. Maybe in his world that National 56 Seats were not as good as Labours 46 Seats,and that was the wishes of NZs voters. Peters has gone the other way ,in his mind 46 Seats beats 56 Seats.
Even worse for both Labour and NZ First they have also proven that crime does pay. After all they need the benefit fraud supporters and corrupt Green Party to satisfy their bogus claim that between them Lie-bour/NZFirst parties have more seats collectively than National. Check it out. Both partners in slime hate the Greens ,but not at any price.
Of course lets hope all this would be, could be for the nation of NZ is just hypothetical. We will all know in 48 HOURS.

I monitor numerous MSM feeds on Twitter every day. The phrase “World War 3” pops up every day. It’s all shrill wailing about the apocalypse being nigh BECAUSE TRUMP RUSSIA NUKES NOKO and stuff. It’s a wonder the poor dears aren’t all getting treated for ulcers.

Kelly was being generous in using the word “misreported.” Most of it falls under the “outright lies” category. It’s deliberate, and it is designed to keep the fears of the headlines-only reading public at a fever pitch. When contrasted with the daily love letters the MSM penned to Obama for eight years it all seems even more frightening.

  Nukuleka, Radio NZ began pushing Maori viewpoints, and greatly upped its use of Maori language after an agreement reached with Maori radio stations (I think there are 21 tribal stations).
  
  The tribes’ stations already received State funding assistance.
  
  Leading up to the agreement, Willie Jackson, chairman of the tribal networks’ group, had criticised Radio NZ for the low amount of “Maori content”.
  
  Jackson led Labour’s demolition of the Maori Party in the recent General Election.
  
  It’s a bit like Maori TV: you have the Maori stations, and then you have the increasing Maori content on the non-Maori stations.

The whirlwind around Harvey Weinstein gives some interesting views into the way people play for power.

All the actors and actresses, politicians and such helped supress any negative opinions about him while he was still valuable to them. As soon as he fell from grace and was no longer of value to them they put in the boot.

People like Paltrow could have raised a fuss years ago and protected many up and comers from him, but they chose to keep quiet because he was useful to them. Now they’re all falling over themselves to kick him in the balls.

The Obamas and the Clintons loved him and used him for fundraising etc. The Obamas even sent their daughter to intern with him. I wonder if they’ll “disavow” like they demand others do?

    Indeed it’s a slippery slope. I was saddened when watching the great Prof Petersen (discussing the outrageous moves in Canada that – use of gender pronouns should be legislated) when I realised that the mentally ill gender pronounazi he was debating was an ex-pat Kiwi at U of Toronto.
    
    Canucks won’t hear much of NZ and for them to associate gender pronounazism with our great country is a real shame.
    
    I tried to feel sorry for this mixed up woman, then I looked at her Twitter feed and she is permanently outraged at the whole world for one thing or another all the time! Prof A W Peet goes by the Twitter handle BinarySmasher@kiwinerd (from which one can only assume her world view is that heterosexuals need to be smashed – that’s constructive).
    
    Even more embarrassingly, it seems that she isn’t even very good at her job given by the mostly awful reviews from her students particularly about her self-involvement (what a surprise) and obnoxiousness.

Seems this bisexual philosophy student, Alfred MacDonald, studying at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), had a conversation with a classmate in which he said the following:

“I don’t think highly of Islam because I am bisexual and could be legally put to death in about a dozen countries that use Islam for their legal system.”

Which seems fair enough. A factual statement buttressing a reasonable opinion. The classmate then revealed that she was married to a Muslim – and a world of shit ensues as The Great Offence Machine lumbers into action.

MacDonald is hauled in front of the Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Classics, Eve Browning. By this time his spidey senses are fired up so he records the conversation (legal under Texas law). You can check the recording and transcript at the link if you wish.

The bottom line is that he gets threatened with the university’s “Behavior Intervention Team”. Not to mention this part:

ALFRED MACDONALD: Would it really get me fired to say that I could be killed somewhere?

EVE BROWNING: In that situation as you’ve described it, absolutely yes.

ALFRED MACDONALD: How?

EVE BROWNING: Don’t even ask. It’s clear you’re not taking my word for it. I don’t care to convince you. If I can’t persuade you that it’s in your interest to behave in ways that other people don’t find offensive and objectionable, then at least I’ve done my job.

ALFRED MACDONALD: Well I know that it’s in my interest. I’m just trying to understand the reasoning.

EVE BROWNING: You don’t have to.

ALFRED MACDONALD: Well, this is a truth[-]seeking discipline!

She laughed at that last comment. Yes – the Chair of that department laughed. As the writer of the piece says:

For her, apparently, this wasn’t a question of ethics or logic – it was a matter of shutting up and obeying the rules. Period. “I’m not out to persuade you,” she admitted. “I’m just out to read you the riot act basically.”

Yes, she actually said that. In her own words, she “read the riot act” to a student for having articulated an appalling truth about Islam and for having expected a philosophy professor to provide him with a philosophically sound reason why he should keep silent about that truth.

Unlike the writer I’m way past the stage of saying, “How could this be?” and that it “raises sobering questions”.

This is about power, right? Okay – so fucking destroy this woman. Make sure she’s fired. Make sure she never works in a job like this again. Fuck her life up badly as a lesson to others, since that seems to be her “philosophy”.

TV1 online has a new Ken Burns doco about the Vietnam War in ten parts.
As someone who remembers the events of the time this is a fascinating series, particularly the reminiscences of the combatants on both sides.
That Ken Burns knows where to find the pulse.

NZ & Oz were the only non Asian countries to send troops to help out the South as I found out about twenty years after the war finished when I went for a tour of the old South Vietnam presidential HQ in Ho Chi Minh City. I thought there might have been a bit of resentment from the locals.

    You think you have problems with this. The ratio in my place is 10%, the 10% being me.
    I reckon I should get paid a shit load more for being able to corral cats into getting stuff done.
    Haven’t had a full crew at work for weeks, what with sick kids, father in laws, mother in laws, father and mothers both at the same time, Aunties with transplants, husband with a long term transplanted heart, sick dogs, periods, PMS and menopause, winter coffs, colds, sore holes and unusually no pimples on the dickies.
    Then there is just a sicky, a broken wrist, boy friend problems, car problems, haven’t had any sporting ones so must say that’s a plus.
    
    All in all just a normal year employing females, oh I forgot the days when one doesn’t like the other, or one won’t talk to the other or resents the other because she is like her mother, it just goes on and some think employing ladies is easy.
    
    A hard life for a man. Funny thing was this week when one of the young ladies came down with a problem. (quite serious for her and will impact on her work.) They all thought they couldn’t talk with me about it. It was quite hilarious given that I have been employing female staff for about 45 years and have my own daughter and grand daughters.
    
    As I said ain’t much I haven’t seen or heard and had to deal with in those 40+ years.

The US seems to support Saudi Arabia.

  The good thing about being a realist is that you don’t have to ‘favour’ either of them.
  Although, in many respects, Iran is much closer to our ideas of liberal democracy than Saudi Arabia. For example, they have a functioning democracy and entrenched rights for women and minorities. On the con side, Iran is well known as a supporter of international terrorism.
  I’d like to list the pros for Saudi Arabia, but I can’t think of any.

I realise the article is basically an infomercial but give your readers some credit for basic intelligence.
They say it is an “entry level” property to get into Ponsonby ( ball it and rebuild) but then they say

“If you don’t have that big bag of cash, here is your opportunity to get into one of Auckland’s sought after inner-city suburbs in a more affordable way.”

Further on we have this
“On the same street as Harper’s property, a 3-bedroom pre-1914 villa with a rating value of $1.09m was sold for $1,495,000 – $405,000 (27 per cent) above its valuation.
Just around the corner on John Street a two-bedroom villa, dated pre-1914, with a rating value of $980,000 sold for $1,372,000 – $392,000 (26 per cent) above valuation”

So you can buy an existing house for 400-500k more in the same area. Why pay $1.0mill for a section?
Promote it for what it is — an expensive bit of dirt in a highly desirable part of Auckland with the opportunity to build a nice architecturally designed house for yourself or on selling.
It is not entry level either for those entering the housing market or even those entering the property development market.

Awesome win for the Houston Astros over the Yankees to put them 2-0 up. Of course the Indians were at the same point a week ago and then lost 3 in a row.

But Houston are way better than the Indians this year. Lets see if they can shove another loss down the Yankees throat in front of their rabid New York fans.

Oh yeah – and in an event that Cubs fans will feel oh-so-familiar with, the winning runs in the bottom of the 9th came off Mr 100mph, Aroldis Chapman, proving once again that in playoff series, against the best batters, even 100mph+ pitches are not always enough.

The crises in NZ poverty, Kauri Dieback etc we see being politicised. And the reporting on poor is often sloppy examples of people who aren’t the best example. The Kauri issue has also been politicised. This pic of a woman giving phosphate to an infected Kauri doesn’t seem to be the best example.As the Kauri is growing in the middle of her driveway and pushing up the pavers. No wonder it’s root system is damaged and it’s become vulnerable. It’s only going to get bigger and rip her whole driveway up. Not good for the tree or the driveway. Best cut down the diseased tree and let the
many other Kauri behind her have a better chance of more light and more apporpriate location.

And now it’s on to the first game of the Dodgers-Cubs series for the National League pennant and…. sigh.

Batting: Same.
Cubs and Dodgers same capabilities but the latter have had a better season. But playoffs are different.

Fielding: Same.
Both sides are good on defence. The Cubs not up to last year’s standards.

Pitching: Dodgers.
Bugger. Their starting pitching is better and their closing pitching way better than the Cubs, who look patchwork. It’s why they hired Aroldis Chapman mid-way through 2016, to bolster the closing staff. He’s gone and the replacements are just not there.

So basically I expect the Dodgers to win this series and win it well. But we will see; they face-planted through August-September, with not one but two stretches of losing ten games in a row. And the Cubs were a shade off having the best record in all baseball in the second half of the season. They sure did not look it though in their series against the Nationals.

So low expectations of a Cubs win. Will be fun to see if their great starting pitcher, Clayton Kershaw, is determined to crush the Cub’s pitchers in revenge for the shellacking they gave him in game six of last year’s ALCS.

    Ah yes. I recall trying to “watch” the infamous 2003 Cub playoff game against the Marlins that way because SKY TV would not show the NL playoffs (but did show the AL). Assholes!
    
    And of course in following that game in that manner I was sitting there following the reported pitches, only to be left wondering what the hell was going on when it all locked up. Little did I know until much later.
    
    But I’ve spent $NZ 35 the last couple of years for the MLB.TV post-season streaming. It’s very good, although it got a bit glitchy at times.
    
    Your story of the 1912 game sounds rather like the scene outside Wrigley stadium last year for the climatic WS game 7, when the local cellphone towers crapped out under the pressure of all these people watching on their cellphones. Result: darkness, evil rumours, fear….. because nobody carries “transistor radios” anymore. There was a very funny photo of one crowd that gathered in the street beneath some two-storey apartment because the residents were watching a big-screen TV from their deck.!!!!

  Sigh! As expected. The Cubs hitters are good enough to get runs even off Kershaw. But even a 2-0 run lead is not enough when you’re closing pitchers give up 3 runs!!!
  
  Like I said, a shaky, patched-together bullpen that leaks runs – and that’s not something you can fix quickly. Certainly not quickly enough to win a seven-game series.

William of Ockham & Hugh Pavletich are very good at what they do, ie trolling. They are ably abetted by all of you who react to their post by posting rebuttals or insults in return. William got 19 posts, Hugh got 20, but a few of those were his own.

I know WO isn’t popular amongs many here, but he has a great way of dealing with trolls, don’t feed them, better still ignore them completely.

Imagine if Hugh or William came back a few hours after their early morning dump to see that absolutely no one had responded or reacted to them. Take away their oxygen, and they will wither away.

Penny is an exception though. She has entertainment value. Every village should have at least one idiot.

        I’ve been upfront – party vote National, but the Labour candidate in my electorate earned my vote as, among other things she at least had the competence and guts to answer my email query about how she would vote on Seymour’s euthanasia bill (in principle in favour, but wanted to see what the safeguards were for misuse against the elderly and disabled)
        
        …in contrast to the National candidate, a devout Filipino Catholic who said he got into politics as he was motivated by the abortion issue. OK, so I was almost 100% sure what you thought on euthanasia…but no reply. Automatic fail. Like I really want an MP…who doesn’t reply to correspondence?!

Then he would be revered as our saviour!”

        The negotiation process is, to say the least, obscure:
        
        The Green Party’s deal is almost complete and the 170 or so delegates are ready to vote on it by a teleconference which could happen tonight, in advance of NZ First’s board meeting to decide between the Labour and National packages tomorrow. It is understood NZ First has made it clear it wants the Green Party to sign off on its deal before NZ First makes its choice so it can be sure Labour has the numbers to form a government.
        
        How can 170+ Green delegates vote on a deal unless they have full details of the Labour package – which almost inevitably means a media leak? And what alternative do they really have anyway other than “deal or no deal”?
        
        The whole thing’s been a sorry saga from start to end.
