Contrast the difference
John Key came to power in the middle of the greatest global recession since the Great Depression. The NZ economy was in recession, unemployment was rising and there was a projected permanent structural deficit.
John Key was absolutely positive about NZ, and how we would do, and that positive leadership saw us through incredibly challenging times economically.
Now contrast that to last night where despite NZ having one of the few surpluses in the OECD, dropping unemployment, low interest rates and low inflation Winston Peters got up and basically said that the economy is about to crash, and that when it happens don’t blame him or the Government.
He has said that times are going to get worse, not better, and at best the Government he picked will just be able to mitigate the impact. He’s already making excuses before he is even sworn in.
So this is how the new Government is starting off – being picked by a guy saying the country is about to head into a nosedive. This is going to be wonderful for business and consumer confidence.
