To all Labour supporters over 65, make sure you are living near bus stops because the party you support are, at the recommendation of Clive Matthew-Wilson, going to introduce stringent drivers’ tests to keep you off our roads.
To all younger Labour supporters who have not retired their mortgages, be prepared for at least 20% interest on current loans when Mr Ed’s Fairy Finance guru stuffs the economy.

        When National took over from Liarbor eons ago, ACC was in debt to the tune of $300 000 000. Car rego was around 360 bucks a year..now ACC is rolling in coin and car rego is around 80-100 bucks a year. *BREAKING NEWS*..NZR own the pipeline and refinery. Liarbor knew about the issues back in 2005..why didn’t Hulun do something about it? Aww that’s right, she was too busy expanding her empire in Wellington..increasing pen pushing busy bodies by 70%
        Didn’t run out of ‘petrol’, fuel deliveries of 95 were halted so they could concentrate on Jet A1, allocating drivers to bridge fuel to storage.
        Bill has done what every good finance minister should do..borrow money when it’s cheap and invest in the countries infrastructure.

        The Dat in Datsun was a jap built Austin 7 .
        
        The 120Y was a great little car.

        In Australia through the 00’s and into the 10’s any time a silly political party passed another economically destructive policy into law they could just dig more money up out of the ground to pay for it. Then the commodities boom ended. Their economy is now very badly set up to deal with reduced minerals demands – hence all the kiwis flooding home to the economy that has been well managed by National.

  A games website this morning had advertisements popping up on either side of the main central panel, the advts changing with each page. Both National and Labour featured among the advertisers, Labour at least 20:1 in frequency v. National.
  
  The two National advts seen showed Bill English with captions “For Proven Leadership” and “For A Strong Team” – the latter including Paula Bennett in the photo.
  
  The repeated Labour advt showed a beautifully-presented and impressively-youthful Jacinda Ardern with an unchanging caption: “Party Vote Labour. We can’t afford to wait. It’s time”
  
  The message I took from the Labour effort told me nothing about Labour’s credentials for office. Instead it conveyed something akin to: ‘We must be in Government one day; it’s now about time we were given a go.’
  
  A message reflecting, in my view, Labour’s sense of presumption and entitlement, rather than its readiness to govern.

Far too much speculation the ‘youth vote’ will vote for Labour and / or the Greens.

I know a whole bunch of young males about to vote for the first time and they are all going National.

Why? Because all their male role models are doing exactly that, and have made their intention quite clear.

The other reason – even at that tender age, they have a highly tuned bull-shit-o-meter, which (we may have forgotten) is very ‘live’ at high school. It sometimes shocks me how cynical the younger generation is.

Nobody does bull shit like Labour (The Greens actually believe their own hype) and kids know that. Clean rivers, free this, free that, no more child poverty, whatever. They don’t buy it.

      basic hourly rates were guaranteed pay rates set by the Australian Fair Pay Commission.
      
      We have Employment Tribunals now, just use the Aussie Fair Pay system alongside that.

    How tragic is it that they’re all doing their absolute utmost to engineer a country with a government elected by a youth vote who have no idea of the real possible outcomes, ruled by a party of people who no idea of any real policy and its outcomes – right down to primary school. If they get into power, no-one but Labour and the MSM will get a say in running the country.

Given both peak immigration and peak Christchurch rebuild have passed by, the downturn in the Auckland market is going to impact on private investment – there may be a failure to reach Treasury growth forecasts if there is no Kiwi Build programme.

As for the gall to claim that National has a plan to reduce child poverty – they have not targeted assistance to this group as Labour would do. Those receiving the average amount and the peak amount under the tax cuts do not have children in poverty. That money should go into health instead.

National may think it politically astute to bribe people with tax cuts, but this leads to an increase in the rate paid to those over 65 in super. And ultimately may make it unaffordable. It’s not prudent, and their disregard for inputs to the Cullen Fund also demonstrates how short term their thinking really is.

      They should be emphatic that it is actually relative poverty as measured by the below 60 % of median income.
      
      That relative poverty makes the poor of Aotearoa ,formerly New Zealand very rich when compared to slum dwellers of Bombay for example.
      
      To repeat there is no true material poverty in New Zealand.

Jacinda Ardern said in the first Hosking debate she would never lie. So why did she tell a big, fat porkie in Wainuiomata last night?

She told the audience Labour had to be good on the ground because it didn’t get the big donations that other parties got. I have news for you Ms Ardern; the Electoral Commission says otherwise.

$115k from retired Justice Robert Smellie, $100k from the Dairy Workers Union, $120k from E Tu Union, and even a couple of weeks ago, $65k from an individual donor. That’s just some of them!

That’s not chump change Ms Ardern. Isn’t it good we now have transparency over electoral donations, so parties can’t plead poverty on one hand, whilst banking cheques with the other.

  IF – and I’d like to think Labour have retained enough sanity to push back hard against the Greens – a Green-Labour government follows through with all they’ve promised to unleash on the dairy sector, those Dairy Worker union folks are going to be a very unhappy bunch three years from now.
  
  Of course if they’re out of a job they’ll also be out of the union and unable to influence them. Perhaps the leadership is thinking the same: collateral damage to get Labour elected?

⛔ the inclination for parties to make new/changed/reversed policy announcements right up until polling day

… I think early voting should be abandoned or limited. Either way, this process should be subject to much stricter controls.

  The GOP has a programme you would love – requiring people without cars to have a DL to vote. And have places one get a DL on the other side of the city.
  
  There are others, limiting polling places in some areas to use large queues to deter voting.
  
  PS The strategy you suggest works best if voters without their own transport face poor weather. Saturday seems OK.

    Don’t worry, if you voted for greens or labour, then your vote will be counted, if you voted for anyone else, then you obviously are not the right person to vote in this country, so your vote is null anyway and therefore not counted.

Elections are revealing of a certain cynicism.

Joyce, Cassandra like or Trump lite, once again saying look at their hole. Thing is the more limited new spending available to Labour is because they have declared their allocations for health and education whereas National have not.

Blinglese says he will now address and reduce child poverty by the resort to the National past-time of reducing taxes across the board (those who earn more get most of the money). If this was a successful method for doing this, we would have seen more evidence for the approach’s veracity.

In this tough field DPF is surprisingly competitive.

A champion of a more sustainable super policy, to resort to championing the glory of National’s largesse on tax cuts as a boost to the amount paid in super to influence anyone over 65 greedy enough to let it sway their vote.

The increased future cost grows and grows. Votes of old people now, at what cost to the youth of tomorrow?

    1. The cost of super will be lower under Labour policy of WFF tax credits.
    2. the Cullen Fund would be larger under Labour and thus mitigate the future cost as well.
    3. The Labour leader is not going to be PM in 2037, so there is no impact on the decision to increase the age from 65 to 67 between 2037 and 2040.

I can see a National NZF government getting a fifth term. Winston will not want to be seen as causing the end of NZF by creating problems. However, if the haters like were in the Bolger government go out of their way to undermine him we could see a few terms of a Labour government,

  Next it will be “I turn 18 the day after election day surely I should be allowed to vote”.

  Early voting is for convenience only, not to lock in the vote of someone who is going to die, even if an accident an unexpected.
  If they are dead they will not benefit from whatever government is in power, talk about wanting to rule from the grave.

I really can’t fathom this huge push to get people enrolled to vote. My opinion is that if you haven’t enrolled you are not interested so whatever government is elected you just have to live with. I think some of the things going on in this election have been disgraceful, like the electoral Commission staff going to a gangs headquarters to enrol them and a teacher marching her whole class down to enrol and vote…no guesses who they would be encouraged to vote for. There has been more than enough advertising to enrol, if you don’t bother, your loss.

Amidst all the “sky is falling” hysteria of the media about the recent fuel “crisis” is this very revealing paragraph:

But, despite the media’s best efforts to make this out to be a “crisis”…Aucklanders remained calm. There wasn’t the slightest hint of panic, worry, queues, shortages, or any indication on any forecourt anywhere that there was a problem. Because there wasn’t. Just the media trying to make one.

In the immortal words of Katie Bradford “whatever we say, whatever we do” we can’t create a crisis.

It’s official: New Zealanders don’t believe the media.

    So? There are hundreds of cabinet papers raising the possibility of all sorts of things. In the world of rainbows and unicorns you can have whatever you want. For the rest of us, experienced in running households and businesses, we know that spending choices need to be made based on priorities, pragmatism, and cost-benefit. Perhaps it is worth re-considering the various options, and whose responsibility they are, and the likelihood of a repeat incident. Perhaps the same decision would be made, even with hindsight. But I don’t blame National, or the Labour party before them, for either decision.
    
    But in the meantime, we have a burst pipe, contingency plans swinging into action (managed extremely well by the various involved parties, including and outstanding Judith Collins and the NZDF) with our largest city fully supplied with the fuel it needs for land transport (without any rationing, restriction or shortage), airlines managing fuel supplies according to their established protocols, and a few thousand disrupted passengers. It’s inconvenient and annoying for them, but every traveller has tales of delayed and cancelled flights, but most people cope.
    
    Hardly a crisis.

      The only effective way ANY government could stopped the house price was to somehow get the banks to raise interest rates significantly and for them to limit lending to the sector in some way.
      There was no way they could do that and the same applied to Governments overseas.

        But most of the poor are Maori or Polynesian and they are extremely attached to their families and want to be close to them.

        I agree GoVege that getting people out of Auckland is the long term answer. For that to happen businesses (and therefore jobs) have to move out.
        I’ve said it a few times that if business owners/managers asked themselves if they really needed to be in Auckland ( given modern communications , technology etc.) many of the honest ones would say they did not need to be there and could easily operate from somewhere else.
        But this sort of move is not going to happen from government policies. Maybe innovative Councils could create conditions to encourage a move.
        ( innovations like Invercargill did with zero fees for students but something applied to businesses).
        In the end it is up to businesses.

Given both peak immigration and peak Christchurch rebuild have passed by, the downturn in the Auckland market is going to impact on private investment – there may be a failure to reach Treasury growth forecasts if there is no Kiwi Build programme.

As for the gall to claim that National has a plan to reduce child poverty – they have not targeted assistance to this group as Labour would do. Those receiving the average amount and the peak amount under the tax cuts do not have children in poverty. That money should go into health instead.

National may think it politically astute to bribe people with tax cuts, but this leads to an increase in the rate paid to those over 65 in super. And ultimately may make it unaffordable. It’s not prudent, and their disregard for inputs to the Cullen Fund also demonstrates how short term their thinking really is.

  We need to target the poor and vulnerable in our society.

    Define rich. National’s tax cuts have largely gone to middle and low income families, and they have increased WFF payments, and raised benefit levels. Next years families package will do the same.

        Middle to low income families are not the well off. And when National raised benefits levels in real terms, the first party to do so for decades, those who received that increase were not the well off.
        
        As to who needs what in tax cuts, that’s subjective. If your a low or middle income family with 2 or more children then it helps the family budget.
        
        You’re flogging a Lefty mantra about National that is a misrepresentation of what they have actually done. Just look at the ACToids on KB complaining that National has not significantly lowered the top tax rate for the real rich.
        
        National has followed, rightly, what Helen Clark did, and focused their support for the low to middle classes. That combined with their welfare reforms and a growing economy are far more likely in the long run to help reduce poverty.

    Studies have proven the over 65’s are the most well-off in our society.
    We can barely afford the pension anyway.

      Show me photos of the thousands of young people living in squalor.
      Any young person living in squalor either chooses to for reasons best known to themselves i.e. don’t want to work.
      OR they have useless parents who do not provide for them.
      They may not be “well off” compared to some, but blame their unhappiness on the media and the reality tv shows, i.e. Kardashians who provoke envy – a good place to start. ENVY creates misery in lots of people.
      footnote, there may well be a few “starving” young people but the reasons will be multiple as to why they are in that situation and it is simplistic to lay the blame solely on the government. I always start with the parents first, then said young person’s attitude.
      (this post does not include those who have either birth defects or health issues – not caused by drug misuse – beyond their control.)

        So did I, until my family broke up and the only refuges available in the 60s were the Sallies.
        I agree with you…I always blame the parents first too, but where parents are useless or just ignorant, it is society’s duty, via the government, to step in and PROTECT vulnerable youngsters.
        I have lived in South Auckland for yonks.
        Once I rang CYPF about a 15 year old whose mum was pimping her out with other underage girls to a well-known gang.
        The first social worker I spoke to told me they had hundreds of mums abusing their young daughters in this way.
        Why is our government tolerating this?
        I have only once ever seen a “mother” being prosecuted for this.
        The mother I know has been paid to push out 11 babies when she should be languishing in jail or sterilized.
        Another teenage girl (same ethnicity by coincidence) tried to kill herself near our home last year.
        Stop kidding yourself about “envy”.
        Thousands of Kiwi kids just want security in life and a future.

NZ needs to watch that ASB Bank’s Aussie owners don’t flog it off to China.

CBA, like other Australian banks, is hiving off non-core business. It is selling its life-insurance arm for $A3.8 billion. This includes NZ’s biggest insurer, Sovereign, as well as Comminsure.

Let’s hope ASB doesn’t think of divesting ASB as well. NZ would have less control over a Chinese bank than it would over an Australian one.

A Chinese ASB would, however, probably provide retirement director jobs for old NZ politicians. So perhaps present politicians would be happy for a transfer of ownership.

The buyer of CBA’s insurance business, Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed AIA Group, now becomes NZ’s biggest insurer.

Interesting to see political correctness gone mad reported in Stuff. A midwife reporting (on Facebook) that babies are being born in South Auckland who are fathered by relatives of the mother. She discussed the incest and abuse and showed genuine concern. The posting on Facebook has been taken down. If Labour takes over watch the truth vanish and watch racism and intolerance rise in NZ.

  It is actually mostly sensible with a few hints of action added (reminds me of Winnie in fact). The H-bomb threat comes from a general (who carefully notes that the ‘dear leader’ has final say).
  
  It is a carefully crafted and manufactured pair of responses designed to get exactly the media reaction it has. But still it’s a pretty stupid line to take given that Trump is not exactly showing signs of level headed diplomacy.

      Did you read the letter? All he did was insult Trump (quite a few times) and play the innuendo game. He’s been consistent in having a policy of getting nukes to prevent an attack. Trump has pretty much said that the US signature on any agreement isn’t worth the paper it’s written on so what other options are left for NK apart from capitulation (which he’ll never agree to).

Of the 1160 players who have pulled on the All Blacks jersey, not one has yet to come out publicly as gay.

But New Zealand Rugby (NZR) chief executive, Steve Tew, believes some may have kept their sexual and gender identities secret…………..

“We can’t hide from the fact that, unless there’s something completely wrong with the law of averages in the male population, we would have had All Blacks who haven’t openly expressed their sexuality as different than we know.

“They want rugby to be force that unifies New Zealand and you can’t do that if it cuts out 10 per cent of the population which is what we make up.

Three observations – I’m pretty sure that no All Black ever has ever “kept their gender identity secret”. I’m pretty sure if someone didn’t have any tackle it’d be noticed in the showers after the game pretty quickly!

Finally – the 10% of the population are homosexual is such bullshit (although you might think it is closer to 80% by the amount of press coverage they get!).

I would guess 2%….at a stretch….. would be homos. I’ve seen perhaps 4-5% of girls “experiment” with other females but it’s only a passing phase. They use the “10%” figure as a way to try and normalise their perversions.

  I agree, on the following grounds:
  1. Her quoted “I’m here for a good time, not for a long time”.
  2. If JA becomes Prime Minister, her reproductive clock will already be ticking in overtime if she truly wants to conceive that baby.
  3. If she is prepared to to wait for the baby, as leader of the Opposition, she’ll already be 40 years old, plus a couple of months by the time of the 2020 General Election. Timing is becoming increasingly marginal.
  
  I’ll be criticised in some quarters for saying so, but it’s time for JA to make a decision between politics (as Party Leader) and motherhood. Her quote in 1. above seems to have indicated her actual decision – a one-off, immediate crack at leading the Labour Party into a General Election, but – if unsuccessful – pulling out soon after to start a family.
  
  Good luck and good health to her with any ambition that she may harbour to have a family of her own. That will be her most personally-fulfilling achievement, whatever may prove to be her further successes in politics.

The great “university for all” con ….

While New Zealand is talking of free tertiary education for all, in Britain people are beginning to question the folly of widening university education.

In an article (unfortunately behind the paywall) in the Telegraph, Judith Woods calls on Britain to look at German education. She says of a British push for the majority to go to university:

“…in an education system that has experienced more churn than the average hydroelectric dam, this fallacy – that university is the best route, the only route – seems to have persisted, when every other modish, useless and indeed useful initiative has been swept away like so much political flotsam by each incoming government.

Of the German system, Woods writes:

The brightest children go to a Gymnasium (equivalent to our grammars) and then on to university. Children who are less academic go to the Realschule and then, at around the age of 15 or 16, progress to a Fachschule, or “technical school”, which is a prequisite to working in management or the civil service.

The number of pupils taking arts subjects such as design, drama, music and dance at GCSE has plummeted to its lowest level in a decade.

Those more suited to learning a trade attend the Hauptschule and then on to a part-time Berufsschule “vocational school” at 16, where they take up on-the-job training and apprenticeships.

That’s what we need in New Zealand.

  That’s what we used to have in NZ… although I would never have categorised the divisions on “brightness”.
  
  Some folks prefer a hands-on approach to their learning and flourish in trades.
  But since the 1970s there has been a dreadful decline in apprenticeships and the emphasis in Education (championed by Helen Clarke as Min of Ed) was to retain 16-18 year olds in the secondary system and then try and persuade them to undergo another 3 years of sitting on their bums at Polytechs or universities….. basically forgoing years in which they could have been attaining practical skills and earning some $$$$.
  How many folks straight out of polytechs still needed on-the-job training ?

A New Index and Another First For NZ
The inaugural index created by The Economist Intelligence Unit assessed 35 economies around the world, focusing on their policy environment, teaching environment and socio-economic environment.

The index ranked New Zealand 88.9 out of 100, taking first place overall and best teaching environment, with Canada just over two points behind, and Finland, Switzerland and Singapore completing the top five.

A big thanks to our Charter Schools helping drive progress in education. Education is not a game or contest but competition between providers will bring about that sort of progress.

Taxinda is obviously very worried that might be because their internal polls are sinking fast. The main target is still the yoof vote followed by a long wait for specials votes. A restless night for her it seems while the grownups will sleep well and be ready to get down to the polling booth.

Time for my dessert and over there it is already Election Day. Tick Two 4 Blue as a mark of pride and love for the wonderful country that is New Zealand
