Steve Maharey in an Op-ed in the Herald this morning saying “like it or not, Jacinda has already shifted the political spectrum to the left”.
Nice work, National. Some of us were pointing out all along that failure to move the spectrum back towards somewhere to the right of Helen Clark, at any time over extended periods you are in office, means you are really just keeping the armchairs in Parliament warm for the socialists next onslaught.
But it is even worse; Maharey is spot on, as National has now in the context of the election, been attempting to at least partly match Jacinda’s bribes and virtue-signalling.

  She has shifted the attention to HERSELF. It is the Jacinda Party, not the Labour party. It isn’t about policy, but smiles.
  
  If she ducks out of politics (which seems pretty likely to happen within a year), then the people will be looking at Andy and co again and they’ll swing away again.

    Yes, the Jacinda Party is an apt description. The BBC online is currently running a flattering story on Jacinda Ardern and her chances in the election: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41226232 . Much of the usual stuff that we’ve heard repeatedly in a campaign strategy that has been more about personal style and age than about the hard issues of the country’s leadership, economy, taxation and direction of policy.
    
    Once again we read how Ms Ardern spent time in the UK advising PM Tony Blair on ‘policy’ (at a time when she would have been no more than 27). But still no evidence is presented on the substance of that claim which I consider, in the absence of substantiation, to be carefully-crafted CV puffery.
    
    And we learn about one of her close friends, the heavily-marketed and published Lizzie Marvelly. I hope, desperately, that that particular friendship is not an indicator of the kinds of personal advice that the Labour Leader has been receiving on how New Zealand should be governed.

      If Taxinda becomes PM, the world’s only younger national leader will be Kim Jung Un.
      
      While both have communist tendencies, Kim arguably has more leadership experience.
      
      On balanced I’d say she’d be the youngest, most inexperienced leader, and she’d be charge of an economy that is the envy of our peers.
      
      Doesn’t bear thinking about.

        True krazykiwi. In fact the OECD has an interesting summation in their latest economic survey of NZ.
        “As a small economy highly exposed to global shocks and natural disasters, it is crucial for New Zealand to continue to have low levels of government net debt. To this end the government’s fiscal strategy is to reduce net core Crown debt to 10-15% of GDP by 2025.”
        This is National’s plan or close as we can get to that target.
        On the other hand Labour with the tax flip flop now need to find yet another $7 billion gap their new taxes would have provided.

  National are about as left wing as the country can handle. Though of course the country really can handle any left wing.
  
  For Clark regime left wing was handled by massive personal borrowing. From 60% to GDP private borrowing 1999 to over 100% by 2008.
  
  For John Keys left wing. Mass immigration which has caused a construction boom and somewhat stimulated a chicken shit economy.
  
  The party tricks to handle the colossal shit weight of the left wing state are running out.
  
  With Ardern it will be large state borrowing and a range of taxation to pay the interest while living standards fall for the general population.
  
  Society can not handle the shit weight of the State indefinitely.
  
  Sorry comrades NZ is a great country but it has been run by left wing mongs for too long. Bill English can probably reverse the damage as he aint John fucking Keys. But anything else forget it. Policitally with NZ first dont think he can do much,

It is with disdain hearing our most hapless failed socialist ex-prime minister Geoffrey Palmer being given a lead item on Newstalkzb with Smalley to berate National. He who was responsible for stuffing the taxi industry, liquor industry, milk delivery, and saddling ratepayers with sickly left-wing legislation such as his Local Government Amendment which has given the nod to election of left-wing fiscally illiterate troughers who cost ratepayers millions in vile agenda-ridden decisions. Time for ratepayers only, to vote in local body elections, then we will see the purging of self-indulgent leeching councillors and that will flow on to appointments of over salaried and incompeten agenda-ridden CEOs and staff.
Bet this good-for-nothing trougher also supports Matthew-Wilson’s proposal (supported by Labour) to have stringent drivers’ tests for those over 65, many being silly enough to vote Labour.
Hope voters also realise that Labour will introduce legislation enforcing taxpayers to fund future election costs incurred by contesting parties. Will give left-wing leeches more time to plan destruction of commercial ventures and markets to sate their envies whilst filling their coffers with funds that their pathetic lazy supporters are not in a position to pay.

Everything that happens in that place requires one worker, five green hats (safety people) a couple of watchers, several administrators and about twenty meetings. The bloke I was talking to is a pipeline specialist up from Taranaki, not a refinery employee.

      MC… Of course the repair will be quick, slow bit is flush/checks. Plus the fuel needs to settle for 30-40 hours after being pumped. Probably to let the air rise. Aerated jet fuel would be a no no..

        They let the jet settle for a period of time because it has water in it from condensation. Water is heavier than jet fuel so after the water settles into the low point of the fuel holding tank at the airport, they flush it out, as well as the stadis, which is a static dissipator. The fuel is tested again at the airport, a batch sample is sent back to the refinery for final sign off..then the jet tank is released at the airport for use.

        …Oh, I forgot to tell you. Flushed fuel is what they call ” slops “. Slops is basically a combination of all the shit. The flushed product from jet, diesel, 95, 98, black oil tanks, intercepter pits etc etc. Gota put it somewhere. Now, slops are injected into 91 fuel at terminal usually when there is a fuel tanker off loading to shore. So if say 3 million litres of 91 is being sent down the line into a 20 million litre 91 storage tank, slops is injected into the line at the same time and all mixes together yum yum..long story short..you then put it in your car. Stick to 95 ( if you can find any lol )

    Actually most of those 3000 are flying today. The flight from Saigon was cancelled last night but all pax are on alternatives with some arriving home earlier than the NZ flight would have had hem back.

    As an oldie I am fortunate that as life had it for me that I didn’t move to the country as such people have problems getting to doctor and hospitals.
    Stay in the larger cities and you will more likely get the health care old age requires.
    A catch 22 question I think for many.

      Kerikeri, straight to Auckland Hospital if you have a heart issue, a bad one by helicopter. Quicker than living in some suburbs in Auckland with the traffic. Healthcare in the outlying districts is fine, experienced it. Thank National for that, big changes during their time in office.

    My elderly mum dislikes GP but joined up because they had a cheap power promo for members. She’s now very annoyed because the cheap offering would have cost her more than she was already paying.
    She didn’t transfer, and now she’s waiting for her membership to expire. Hopefully that will happen before she does.
    
    She also wants to know if JAs granny voted early, and what would happen to the vote of someone who didn’t make it to polling day. Anyone know?

      Yes, methane breaks down into CO2 and water when it reacts with oxygen.
      
      CH4 (methane) + 3O2 (oxygen) -> CO2 + 2H20 (water)
      
      Photosynthesis then takes that CO2 + water and makes it into grass (and releases O2). The cows then eat that grass…
      
      So we have a carbon neutral cycle, but we must still feel guilty, so it must be bad! And screw the farmers!

        What I was saying is methane is not a stable chemical. It is purported to be vastly worse than CO2 and in effect equivalent to many times CO2.
        Because it has energy to spare (unlike CO2 which is the end result – as in an ash – no more energy available) it is broken down by UV and splits apart into H2O and CO2
        It breaks down quickly and becomes vastly LESS damaging even by the AGW standards.
        
        So the methane calamity is bullshit on a stick – pun intended

    Cattle do not produce the emissions people are worried about.
    
    It is the bacteria that break down plant matter that live in the cattle n that actually generate methane & CO2 etc.
    
    Guess where else you find bacteria that break down plant matter into methane/CO2 etc? In the soil, in the leaf litter in forests, in swamps, seaweed rotting on the beach, in compost heaps and composting toilets.
    
    Any grazing animal (including moa) needs those bacteria to break down their food. We do too: especially GoVege.
    
    But no, it’s just the special methane that comes out of cows that is the problem.

        If that was not happening then there would need to be some other ways for cattle to add carbon back into the atmosphere. When did you last see a cow drink diesel or eat coal?
        
        Do you even know what a cow looks like?
        
        Methane comes from many sources. Most of the methane comes from rotting vegetation in forests, marshes or wherever. Every plant that grows is going to die and rot back (unless it is trapped and turned into coal).
        
        It’s all basic chemistry. Ignore the guilt and the ideology.

        What I just stated is a view shared by every political party in this country and our diplomats. NZ also has other issues with the distance to our markets pushing up our carbon footprint. Both methane and food miles are attract growing pressure from the global community.
        
        National has presently exempted Agriculture from the ETS. National have never ruled out its introduction at some time in the future. Labour and/or the greens will win the keys to the economy eventually and will include agriculture in the scheme.
        
        Emissions per capita.
        India and china emit far less per person than we do.
        Both country’s are making efforts to reduce their emission growth at the same time as expanding their economy’s.
        
        If your political position involves denial of reality sooner or later your views become redundant .

        There are nutritionists working a crisp factories. That does not make crisps healthy.
        
        We have theologians studying God. That doesn’t make God real.
        
        Yes we do have scientists studying this stuff for two reasons:
        1) It is work in a field that is hard to find jobs in.
        2) NZ is trying to find ways to reduce the methane emissions from cattle by changing the microbes in the gut. If they can do this then it gives a commercial advantage against other farmers that do not have this tech.
        
        It does not make the problem real.
        
        As I already said, other animals and biological processes generate methane and there are natural chemical processes which break down methane into CO2.
        
        Human-induced methane (including agriculture) is small compared to natural methane production (forests, swamps, wildlife…) and much of the man made production is only replacing natural methane production (for example cattle replace bison in USA).
        
        And, BTW, rice paddies produce more methane than all the world’s cattle put together.

        There are very few ways to actually remove carbon from the natural cycle.
        
        Nature mainly does it by making coal, but that takes millions of years.
        
        One way to do it would be to take logs and sink them somewhere to the ocean floor to some place where there is lots of pressure and little oxygen – really deep, say Kaikoura.
        
        However, I am much more confident that nature will sort it all out.
        
        Global warming predictions depend on “feed forward” multiplier effects leading to unstable “tipping points”. These very rarely exist in nature.
        
        What is far more common are self-regulating “feed-back” mechanisms such that systems adapt to cope with extra nutrients (CO2 is just plant food).
        
        For example, there’s now new growth in African desert regions because the extra CO2 is allowing plants to grow in marginal areas. This will absorb more CO2 and if we stop, those plants will die off again.
        
        Nature is really good at adapting.

So at what stage do the cows and chickens become endangered species and the animal rights people pick up the mantle and wish to save them.

Yesterday RNZ ran a story about Nick Smith being jeered at a Timaru meeting .
The issue , Ecan forcing people to not use their log burners that are over 15 years old.
While Smithy blamed Ecan for this fascism , the problem for me is that this shit is being allowed under a Notional gummint , it was the same with the Health and Safety ramp up , and the pandering to the Maoris over smoking and the attendant attacks on private property rights that that entailed.

I wish Ngati Notional had some balls.

Unfortunately they are merely the best of a bad lot.

  The concentration of PM10 in Christchurch has halved in the last 20 years.
  The ecan scientists said there were fewer hospital admissions because of ecans policy on logfires.
  But no they only estimated the figures and the admissions to hospital and deaths have gone UP. They had claimed around 100 fewer admissions when actual figures from Canterbury Health Board show there were around 1500 more.
  The scam over pm10 and logfires should have been dealt with by National but Smith and co have allowed millions to be spent for no reason.

Finally got to see a candidates meeting last night. Thankfully the more the Labour candidate spoke the less she made herself an option. But even if she loses she will be an MP thanks to her List placing. She is shallower than a petrie dish.

The tl:dr is that 9 years ago was when everything started going wrong, and if we tick red on Saturday everything will be fixed in three years.

The National candidate was miles ahead in policy knowledge and talked up solutions – not necessarily ones I agree with, but he knew his stuff.

Great to see Jim Bolger come out and give a plug for Bill English and National on the Rachel Smalley show. Jim warned voters not to make their vote on personality and said people should not be looking for the most exciting candidate as they cast their vote this week. Bolger also said personality does’t feed your children, keep the rivers clean, or make the Country safe, it takes leadership strong intellect and the right policies.

Can I let you into a little secret. I know place where there are many thousands of students gathered every day and only a handful have voted so far. Lab/Greens are not getting the Yoof to either enroll or vote. So forget all the polls. Its one thing to say ‘Im voting Lab/Green” and another to actually so into a polling booth and tick the ballot paper.
Im sure Nats internal polling is telling them to polls are way out as regards Lab/Greens as their scrutineers are in the places and can observe the age of the voters voting.

Here’s an example of how good the Labour advertising machine is. This morning I found a pop-up ad for Labour with Adern’s toothy grin on my phone coming through an Android YouTube downloader app! The only way to get rid of it was to delete the app’s notifications otherwise it kept appearing.

These people are frighteningly good and what’s more, their ‘Lets do this’ slogan has real cut-through. I’m a National voter, but I can’t for the life of me remember if they even have a slogan…. Fuck….

I am not a pollster and I freely admit that what I am writing here has absolutely no factual backup – just a bit of hunch.

Jacinda peaked about 2 weeks ago and is on the decline. A very rapid decline. Once people see through the Jacinda lipstick and see the Labour pig beneath it, things start going into free fall. The flip-flopping on tax and all the wimmins weekly stuff might play to here core fans, but not voters in general.

National definitely got a bit stuck for a bit, especially while Bill was trying to find his own way. Now he has and people are generally warming to him. Two months ago he lacked the “bbq factor”, now he has it.

Most people these days get alarmed by talk of taxes and unions and busines-hostile policies. The days of class warfare – setting the blue collar against the “rich pricks” – is gone. We are all now “rich prick” factory owners through Kiwisaver etc. We all want to see the stock market (and thus industry) thrive.

A lot of the polling only samples people who say they are definitely going to vote or are likely to vote. I call bullshit on the “likely to vote” crowd. That’s the crappy response you make if you are not going to vote, but don’t want to lie and still want to sound like you will do the right thing and vote. I suspect that those are mostly the left leaning voters who are less likely to vote anyway (eg. Greens always under perform). To this we add Facebook and other social media. Once these sorts of people have liked on Facebook it ticks their mental box for having done their bit.

I think there is a good chance National will be able to govern alone. I also think there’s a good change for ACT to break its 1-man-band problem.

Anyway, who knows, I’m probably reading this all wrong.

    However there are things we do know:
    * Greens do tend to do worse on the day.
    * There is a well documented psychological phenomenon that many people feel they have “done their bit” by virtue signaling, then fail to follow through with real action.
    * As of 2015, the average Kiwisaver balance was over $11k (it is probably $15k by now). That’s riding on the stock markets and would be severely threatened by Labour policies.

They panicked when Angry Andy tanked in the polls and what we laughingly saw suggested a few short months earlier happened. They passed the poison challis to Taxinda.     1) National: Yeah, that will work for me.
    
    2) Labour: They will prove their incompetence really quickly and inoculate an entire generation to having another Labour government. They won’t really be able to achieve much in 3 years. Nat will get the wake-up call they need and a chance for some down time (it must be hard work being a Minister for 9 years). Nat come back re-energized in 2020 and everything is fine and dandy until 2032 or so.

So, there has been a lot of talk (mostly on left-wing blogs) about the possibility of a “youthquake” – a high turnout of young, predominantly left-leaning voters propelling Labour to victory.

The early evidence is this doesn’t seem to be happening. However expanding on the concept, I wonder if this election we might instead see a “farmquake”. Labour’s water tax has evoked very strong negative reaction in rural communities. These voters are already predominantly National voting, so vote share probably won’t change much. But if these feelings resulted in high turnout in these areas, that could make the difference and give National the election.

This is admittedly pure speculation (with a large dash of wishful thinking). But given the data we have so far, it’s also a completely plausible possibility.

  Thus, the “farmquake” need not be just limited to rural people even though Labour have tried their damnedest to make a rural/urban divide.
  
  Perhaps Labour read the UK play-book a bit much. I would argue that the rural/urban divide is much easier to exploit in UK because:
  1) They have much larger cities.

  I’m hoping that National will be saved by the rural and provincial city electorates upping their party vote for National from 65% to 70%+. This will cancel out the previous Nat-voting old ladies in the cities who are switching to Labour because Jacinda’s such a ‘nice young thing’.
  Lots of Greenies are switching to Labour but this doesn’t change the overall balance, and the Nats will get a few back as the ‘I’m voting NZF to teach National a lesson’ brigade comes back home.
  Youngies, as always, find voting too hard despite what they might say is their preference, so my forecast is (whatever tonight’s poll might say).
  National: 46%
  Labour: 38%
  Green: 5.5%
  NZF: 4.5% (and Winnie loses Northland)
  TOP: 2.5%
  Maori: 2.5%
  ACT: 2.0%

    Good luck finding impartiality Flipper. Years ago I was studying geology and my lecturer said, ‘the earth is cooling we’re tilting slowly back into an ice age – albeit a minor one’. Then out of no where comes ‘the world is heating up’.
    
    It started to heat up about the same time Al Gore lost his job and was sniffing around for a new one. Interesting report last week of kauri die back from 30,000 years ago. The sudden increase in temperature caused the south pole to discharge huge amounts of fresh water into the ocean. Sea level rise meant that the feet of the coastal kauri got taste of salt and died off.
    
    The temperature rise was 16degrees C. The world continued and a balance was restored. The tossers are currently bleating about a 2 degree rise.
    
    The volcano in South America which upset our flights in the Southern Hemisphere (few years back) dumped more CO2 and methane into the atmosphere in a few short weeks than humans have managed to do since we began farting.
    
    Go to any reputable University and speak to geology lecturers who will gladly divulge the story of the past through the strata and rocks which are around you.
    
    Climo- palaeontologists will gladly share the profiles from the ice they drill out of the Antarctic. This cross section of trapped gases tells you what was in the atmosphere year by year, layer by layer.
    
    Al Gore, carbon trading and climate scaremongers are up to their trendy armpits in deceit and lies about this issue. The world climate waxes and wanes over the centuries. Change is a natural function of the atmosphere.

I’ve been out of action for a wee while, occasionally lurking in the wings here but not posting. I’ve not voted yet (but definitely will). In the past I have voted for 3 different parties over my voting ‘career’. While I wouldn’t exactly consider myself a swing voter I’m still open to persuasion.

Give me your best succinct reason or pitch why I should vote for your favourite party & I will consider this in earnest when I got to the ballot box.

      Bottom line is Labour Green for a massive growth in the state , as well as a fundamental change in the nature of the state (think republic with TOW written into a constitution), blue for a slower rate of state growth.

RNZ Article. Teacher Jo Cameron physically takes her students to the Polling Booths in article about high rate of young Maori enrolled. Does this cross a line. Jo Camerons Twitter accounts shows her tweets are almost exclusively political, and Labour party politics, retweeting Grant Robertson, Helen Clark, Jacinda etc. What checks and balances do we have to ensure our kids are getting unbiased information at school.

Yesterdays day’s article in the ODT plays down the risk of strikes from Fair Pay Agreements. Jacinda Adern cites the Aged Care pay equity settlement as an example of how “nice” the process will be.

She forgets that that deal was paid out of a single purse – the government’s. The government paid no more than it could afford.

However, Fair Pay agreements will be paid for by all affected business, large and small. Most businesses won’t be at the table to influence the deal, but they will have to live with the outcome whether they can afford it or not.

This is the reason there were so many strikes in the 1970s and 80s. Award deals were kept low so as to help the businesses least able to pay. Frustration with low award settlements led unions to seek better deals at the company level, and they frequently went on strike to this end.

In other words it’s not the awards (Fair Pay Agreements) that cause strikes, it’s their failure to deliver and the subsequent need to resort to taking frustrations out on individual companies.

Labour is offering no comfort saying their awards won’t cause strikes. They never did. But how will Labour stop second tier strikes happening? They can’t unless they deny the right to strike altogether. Yeah right.

Stanislav Petrov died in May, with no fanfare:

Stanislav Petrov was the duty officer monitoring an early warning system from a bunker outside Moscow on Sept. 26, 1983, when the radar screen suddenly appeared to depict a missile inbound from the United States.

“All my subordinates were confused, so I started shouting orders at them to avoid panic,” Petrov told the Russian news agency RT in 2010. “I knew my decision would have a lot of consequences.”

The alert siren wailed. A message on the bunker’s main screen reported that four more missiles had been launched, he said. Petrov had 15 minutes to determine whether the threat was real and report to his commanders.

“My cozy armchair felt like a red-hot frying pan and my legs went limp,” he told RT. “I felt like I couldn’t even stand up.”

The famous 007 flight had just been shot down and things were pretty tense.

Petrov, thinking that any U.S. attack should have involved even more missiles to limit the chance of Soviet retaliation, told his Kremlin bosses the alert must have been caused by a malfunction. He persuaded Moscow not to shoot back.

It was later determined that Russian satellites must have mistaken sunlight reflecting off clouds for nuclear missiles.

Petrov’s reward? He was chastised for failing to provide proper paperwork, he said.

In this time of talk of elections, politics and putting the right people in control, it pays to remember the countless, unknown souls who just may have saved your ass without you knowing.

Watched the TV One pitch by the pollies to school kids. I like W English and have known him for about 20 years. Nevertheless I never thort that I would conclude that he related to those kids far better than I ever saw from J Key (who accepted my grandson’s invitation to visit his school). English was brilliant, far, far better last night than his rivals and clearly welcomed the absence of a media filter. His use of Samoan in talking about his wife, children and grandfather was brilliant. Best it was genuine and, best of all, obviously resonated with the kids. The smiles, nay wide grins, contrasted with the response to those delivering them a lecture. And one kid appeared to score a momento – W English’s tie.

      That’s just it – it’s a referendum. People should be free to promote their views for either side without fear of intimidation. If a gay man had been fired for promoting the ‘yes’ view, what an uproar there would have been. Just last week the Australian government passed emergency laws to make it illegal during the same-sex referendum to say anything someone else might find intimidating or vilifying. What’s the bet the law will only be used against conservatives? It basically limits the speech of anyone who is against same-sex marriage.

As some have mentioned on here already, it turns out the threat of climate change is not as great as was previously thought, and those models? They are running “too hot”.

Climate change poses less of an immediate threat to the planet than previously thought because scientists got their modelling wrong, a new study has found. New research by British scientists reveals the world is being polluted and warming up less quickly than 10-year-old forecasts predicted, giving countries more time to get a grip on their carbon output.

Experts now say there is a two-in-three chance of keeping global temperatures within 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, the ultimate goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement.

They also condemned the “overreaction” to the US’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, announced by Donald Trump in June, saying it is unlikely to make a significant difference.

According to the models used to draw up the agreement, the world ought now to be 1.3 degrees above the mid-19th-Century average, whereas the most recent observations suggest it is actually between 0.9 to 1 degree above.

The discrepancy means nations could continue emitting carbon dioxide at the current rate for another 20 years before the target was breached, instead of the three to five predicted by the previous model.

More top reporting from RNZ. “A veteran of the swamp kauri industry, Milton Randell, had reported seeing a kauri dig in progress near Ruakaka last Wednesday, the day before the pipe broke, at what he later assumed was the site of the break. But Mr Randell told RNZ that on reflection, the dig he spotted as he drove to Waipu may not have been at the pipeline site.” Ah. Yeah. So it was total fabrication. The eart at the site was undisturbed and the dig at the site in question was 2-3 years ago! So how did Milton get it so wrong. Was this a political hit (and a miss)?

What the hell is the Electoral Commission up to ? Not only are early voters exhorted to ‘Vote for Change’ by wading through crowds of unemployed Labourites wearing red tshirts, but the voting papers are then taken home by staff (by definition they do not hold full time jobs).

NZ ranked no. 1 as the least corrupt country. This election has blown that out of the water.
Whatever the result on Saturday, these practices need to be exposed and shut down asap.

  When sanity reigned and voting was restricted to one day the boxes at the end of the polling day were opened and counted at least twice. The sealed boxes were then taken to a pickup point from where they were taken to a central point. When the Electoral people get the collected boxes the votes are counted again. So yes, with voting extended 2 weeks it leaves much room for hanky panky. What did surprise me was there were no Police patrols of voting stations, especially late at night when the boxes were loaded into the supervisors cars. In some countries this would be mandatory.

National have NOT delivered housing in Tamaki Auckland, and responsibility, IMO, goes straight to Bill English, Steven Joyce and Nick Smith, as Crown Shareholding Ministers in both the Tamaki Redevelopment Company Ltd (59% Crown – 41% Auckland Council), and Tamaki Regeneration Ltd (100% Crown).

Under this National Government, more houses have been removed in Tamaki – than have been built.

Since 2012, 237 former Tamaki State houses have gone.

In FIVE years – only 213 new houses have been built, of which only 92 have been ‘social’ houses.

IMO, Bill English, Steven Joyce and Nick Smith are thus personally responsible for increasing the Auckland ‘housing crisis’ and homelessness.

It has happened directly ‘on their watch’.

5.1 and 35km deep near Seddon. Poor buggers. The last thing those guys need is another shake, road/track damage etc

Invercargill City Council is working hard to justify the junket trips from the sister city arrangement with a Chinese city.

Today’s Southland Times gives an ocean of space to articles by two Invercargillites’ sponsored trips to China.

I doubt that newspapers of a few decades ago would have puffed such a local body perk.

One of the writers of the articles, Eirwen Harris Mitchell, the Invercargill City Council’s “manager of secretarial services,” includes this in her report:

“ I have met wonderful, generous, kind-hearted people – and the many ridiculous, preconceived ideas I had about China, and its people, shaped by my own ignorance, scaremongering, and the western media, have been well and truly whisked away.”

The shame of the the Invercargill City Council’s squandering of its ratepayers cash on international junket travel and the complicity of the Southland Times by printing such a promotional plug is compounded by Harris Mitchell’s absurd report. That portion could have been written by the propaganda section of the Chinese Communist Party,.

The Southland Times is owned by Stuff, reportedly the new name of Fairfax New Zealand though “Fairfax New Zealand” is still the official registered name on the Companies Register.

  The most “wonderful, generous, kind-hearted people” I’ve met on my travels have probably been Greeks, Colombians and fly-over state Americans. Doesn’t mean though that we should open the borders to every Greek, Colombian and fly-over state American that wants to come here though!

    No, just that like most of the community trusts, it was set with money from the sale of the local savings bank when these were flogged off to a company that later disappeared.
    
    The exceptions were the Auckland Savings Bank, which became the ASB and is now fully owned by the CBA of Australia, the Taranaki Savings Bank, which evolved into the still NZ owned and local TSB, and a tiny West Coast bank which I think may have merged with the ASB.
    
    The Community Trust is quite distinct from the two licensing trusts in Southland.

Corin dann can’t help himself a blatant pitch for labour stating that National were wrong stating that labour would tax more. He stated that Labour is not going to tax people more. How on earth does he know.
Yes, Dann certainly showed his colours tonight. Red all the way. Does something of that nature come under the party political broadcast allowance on TV. It was blatant to me, making a statement of intent on behalf of the labour party.

  In fact a reduction in tax has been legislated. Therefore if labour legislate to remove that tax reduction then from april 1st 2018 people will pay more income tax. So Mr Dann get your facts right, by dint of cancelling the reduction in income tax, the tax is therefore higher, or an increase.
