I went to buy a used car about a month ago. It was a tired old Mitsubishi but that’s all I could afford. The salesman was a guy called Andy. To be fair I don’t know what made me look at this car because the Toyota I’ve already got is super-reliable and has a lot more years in it yet.
Anyway I soon went off the Mitsubishi because Andy came across as a dour, grumpy bloke unsuited to his role.
Then a couple of weeks later I was going past the same dealership and I spotted a tall girl called Cindy. She asked me if I’d like to buy a car. I said not really, I’m still happy with the one I’ve got. But I was captivated by her smooth talk, and the promises she made that the car I bought from her would deliver so much more satisfaction than the car I already had.
By the time I’d gathered my senses I’d signed up for a car, and it was the same tired Mitsubishi that Andy had showed me earlier. But now the tyres had been swapped for bald ones and there was an expensive-sounding whine in the gearbox which she said she would get a panel of experts to investigate after I took delivery.
But none of that mattered, because Cindy had won me over.

      Early voting gives a big boost for the Left as their constituency `stumble’ across polling booths as they wander around town as opposed to having to make an effort to find a polling booth on election day.
      
      Comrade Taxcinda voting today will probably activate a few more of them – especially as it is a fine, warm morning already in Hastings.

        Being illiterate was given as one reason the gangs demanded the Electoral Commission visit gang pads to sign up their members. Big, strong and aggressive they might be, but gang members are embarrassed to admit they can’t read and write so need their own special visit from the commission.
        
        The gang leader said they all want to take personal responsibility for their lives and look after their families. Now, can we ensure they all vote National?

        Incidentally, all the gang members I know are from single mum families.
        One of them ran away and ditched her kids with relations, then the kids ran away (knowing they were unwanted).

  Good to see the new National campaign signs going up around town, showing everyday NZ’ers.
  
  Perhaps National needs to reinforce the message to everyday NZ’ers that the cost of living will increase under Labour eg those taxes will hit people in the pocket in 3 ways – firstly directly, then secondly, as prices rise due taxes imposed on industry/farming/transport being passed on to consumers and thirdly, Labour will cancel next year’s personal tax cuts that were already planned!
  
  Might be time for some new radio/tv ads, notice how the Labour radio/tv ads uses a subtle attack format, it would be easy for National to do something subtle too!

The top bosses of the Electoral Commission appear to be globalists. They were educated in our communist-controlled universities. What chance is there of a free and fair election? We know that polls were rigged in the US costing Trump millions of votes. Could the same happen in NZ?

      Actually the Universities are changing a bit. Sure, the old timers live on memories and Eau D’ Marx – and the new lot in the student associations are just vile little snots like they’ve always been – but the newer academics and most of the graduates are a bit more savvy and centrist. They seem more willing to actually discuss the merits of an idea. Rampant climate change nutters though are legion in plant biology, limnology, pockets of the Dunedin law school and maths departments. But that has nothing to do with grant funding at all…..

        Our universities are weakened by the increasing size within them of flaky social science subjects, and by the dominance of the New Leftists in traditional subjects like history.
        
        Sociologists, anthropologists usually parrot the Canadian MultiKulturizm zealots Kymlicka and Taylor. Practical, but flaky-as-theory, subjects such as social work are brought into the intellectual tent.
        
        The Faerie Queen as Prime Minister would draft ever lower-IQ individuals into the institutions. Because of their limitations they will bloat the rolls in sociology, political “science”, revisionist history, Maori studies, feminist studies, and so on in their taxpayer funded journeys towards becoming fully certified socialists.

      Very few of the staff at the uni of Auck I worked with over 13 years were communist.
      One in the Psych dept.. have to admit he was deeply communist, even had a Soviet Union award (I shit you not) . Hell of a nice guy and fun to clash ideologically with but he was on the outer and had little influence.
      None in the electrical and electronic engineering dept. They weren’t even socialist there.

      The biggest PITA was the stifling PC environment.
      It was beyond ludicrous and that was back in 2003 when I last worked there, hate to imagine what it’s like now.

In this ‘article’ (aka free Labour party advertising) Fran Wilde does the old trick of misleading readers by conflating an unrelated, high percentage figure with some “mood for change” she’s found from the boardrooms of NZ.

She then goes out of her way to find individuals that support her position, presenting them as impartial. She even manages to use Don Brash for that.

Titled “Who Owns NZ”, it will be tilted toward the liarbor pardy’s call that those with Chinese sounding names have been squeezing NZ’ers out of the housing market.

    4) Jacinda You are just like Donald Trump in that you are using divisive hate speech when you talk about ‘my generation’ – how can you guarantee that this won’t lead to increased ageism and worse outcomes for the more vulnerable members of society who are not in ‘your generation’.

      Labour’s tax system will be fairer, especially for those my age struggling with the depressing reality of not being able to buy a home and get ahead. I’m confident that will make a difference in the suicide rate.

      I’m not the one wanting to raise the retirement age to 65, so I reject the assertion we do not care for the elderly. Also, the last Labour government introduced both Kiwisaver and the Super fund – which National stopped paying into – to ensure a better retirement for all Kiwis, so I resent and reject the assertion that we do not care. We don’t hate – we do positivity for abetter New Zealand

  What has Don Brash done in politics apart from say when Leader of National that he would get rid of the Maori Seats if National got Elected in 2005. Well he didn’t get elected after Helen’s Student free loans propelled Labour to victory. Joined Act and became Leader and still could not win a seat in Parliament and after slagging John Key at every opportunity backed a cause again to rid NZ of the Maori Seats and is still slagging National for John Key dispososing him as National Party Leader.

5. Polls that show the ‘one law for all’ position is supported by 80% of New Zealanders, not just a small band of “old white males” as our Cultural Marxist opponents pretend.

Wind the clock back a few years now…Jacinda among other Labour clowns screamed that John Key had “sold NZ out to big business interests and his friends in Hollywood” for doing a deal with tax to ensure “The Hobbit” was produced in this country and not in another. The noise from Labour was close to deafening while the accusations against the government sprang out like machine gun fire. The film was of course made here. On the afternoon of the premiere in Wellington who should we see walking down the red carpet in truly Hollywood style but Jacinda ablaze in a new dress and her prized dental work glowing in the sun like a re-run of “Jaws.” I am cruel to quip about her teeth but given her frightful two-facedness I think she deserves all the scorn I can muster. I wouldn’t trust her with the truth ever.

To pick up on a point you made yesterday in the thread on Achievable vs Nonsensical, you argued that when the Philips Curve becomes vertical at the natural rate of inflation (I think you meant natural rate of unemployment) it is representing the effect of inflation on unemployment – not the other way around.

But that argument is completely nonsensical. A vertical Philips Curve implies an absence of any causal relationship between unemployment and inflation.

And, No, I’m not studying economics. I studied economics in the 1970s and I read Friedman’s work at the time. Following his argument, a downward sloping Philips Curve could only exist, if workers were so stupid that they did not realise that the real value of their wages was being eroded by inflation.

The NZ dollar has started its dive. We have been lucky that the North Korean, Irma and other factors has limited the fall to date. Commodity prices are also falling which will not help farmers, although a weaker NZ dollar will help.
Imports will cost more, wages will rise, unionism will reduce productivity and taxes/levies will increase. Recession is just around the corner unless: TWO VOTES BLUE

  You have the last part right Vic but not the dollar value. It slumped with the first poll that showed Taxinda in front but has rebounded again now a little stronger. Yes it will sure tank if Taxinda gets in and trashes the domestic economy with substantial borrowing scheduled for the first 100 day plan. Don’t monitor commodity prices as constantly as the dollar since the latter effects pension payday every 4 weeks. The firm NZ dollar gives us about the equivalent if of an extra NZ$100 in local currency living in one of the 9 cheapest countries to retire in.   I’m confused about this too. What’s a ‘foreign speculator’? We could assume they mean anyone who is not a citizen or permanent resident or Australian citizen.
  
  But what if the buyer is a company? Maybe a NZ company with some overseas shareholders, or even NZ shareholders some of which are companies with their own shareholders. What if a company is primarily engaged in other activity but happens to also own some residential property? Does one drop of Chinese blood contaminate everything downstream of it and make any house purchase illegal? Maybe Phil Twyford can elucidate.

Listening to the radio this morning I am not sure whether the person meant it as a joke, but to me it had a very serious ring.
He said he was downsizing his business, the pool man was gone, the lawn man was gone and the housekeeper was gone.
So labour a result of your possible election the downsizing of people’s businesses. All those small one man businesses will find themselves out of work and looking for jobs.
From this person’s comments that is a huge number of future unemployed people 1 person getting rid of 3 employees right there and doing the jobs they did himself.
People are starting to feel poor and the votes haven’t even been counted, just by virtue of what labour is signalling.

To the union conference as she is the union rep and to boot she is pregnant and wants 26 weeks paid leave. Lot of resignation in the air this morning, nobody ever heard the phrase ‘keep battling on?’ But is it a battle anyway?, he/she who gets the most votes wins (usually.) All the last 3 elections have been tight, it’s not the left or the right that wins elections but the choices of the middle. Knowing many people in Auckland who have been outbid at auctions tells me that Labour’s plan to go the same way as Aussie for new arrivals to build their own homes is probably going to resonate, more than water taxes, the price of steak increasing or anything else. At the moment that may be a telling factor for younger people so Labour have been smart. Jacinda was also smart in not ditching the greens, whatever her reason was it must have been plain to her that the greens vote would rebound, it also allows some of the Remuera house wives room to continue voting green. Meanwhile we get to read about Joyce’s economic marks while at university and that concern about youth suicide is an attack on the elderly. It’s not Bill that’s losing the plot but the half cocked gumbos shoving their boots in their mouths. When JK won he’d gone into Mangere, Otahuhu and areas like that and the working people liked him, he largely maintained his credibility with them. A sense of resignation in an Army is fatal, check out the mirror guys you’ve forgotten how John built his castle because some of you never approved of it and ignorantly thought he was kowtowing to the ‘wrong people’ – but he was the winner. If Jacinda draws those people to her she will be the winner and I personally will think that we lost a top helmsman – Bill English. But rather than turn things upside down, that Jacinda (if she wins and it still is ‘if’) will follow Bill’s plans at least initially just as John followed Helens, so to use what may be an American style language give up on the post mortems already.

  I have had two children and their partners (one in 30’s with children and one lot in their 20’s) enter the housing markets in the past two years, both had assistance through Kiwisaver etc, all three of my children work, none are academically gifted, what ever that means.
  Daughter is a qualified chef, one son is a class 5 truck driver and my other son has just started an apprenticeship in a job that he has been doing the practical of for years.
  Leave things alone, change for change sake should be reserved for paint and wallpaper.

Government programmes generally achieve the opposite of their stated goals, but to really, really, fuck things up requires the UN!

  My guess is that the smarter South African whites knew that international sanctions would bring apartheid to its knees, but knew the mess that would be left. The economy could not possibly lift non-whites to the living standard of whites, thus white living standards would dive.

  It’s easy to hand out blame in hindsight. A bit like asking some old German whether they were a pacifist in Nazi Germany – an express route to the concentration camps.   The point I was making is that the sanctions did not help much. They might have made for a few inconveniences for rich people, but they made things worse for the people at the bottom.
  
  I’m sure it made some people in NZ who were pro-sactions feel good about themselves that they were “doing their bit” and “fighting apartheid”, but in fact they hurt the poorer (ie. black people) more than anyone else. “fighting” sounds very brave, especially when you’re not putting your balls on the line and are going home to a warm bed and a solid meal every night.

  Of course apartheid could not survive, but you surely can’t argue that the end and transition has been successful economically.
  
  I disagree with CMM that sanctions were ineffective. Embargoes, particularly on oil and armaments, must have been the key loads on the apartheid government in its last days.
  
  As for the anti-apartheid protesters in NZ: some were genuine, some were sanctimonious virtue signallers.

    I have no problems with the idea of applying military sanctions on a country like South Africa during apartheid, or on Nork.
    
    That is a very different thing to the broad-brushed sanctions that impact on the people – especially in a country like Nork where only maybe 1% of the people actually have any influence over the regime and the rest are living squalid lives.
    
    Even oil is a marginal thing. You can be assured that some oil will always get through and the regime will take its needs before anyone else gets some. Therefore it hurts the people at the bottom more than those at the top.
    
    Did military sanctions stop South Africa? I am sure they did hurt to an extent in South Africa’s war in Angola.
    
    However it also forced the development of a local arms industry that later sold weapons all around the world. Nett result: heavy duty weaponry in Yemen, Libya, South America, Middle East… the law of unintended consequences is a bitch.
    
    It is also worth considering that the embargo on military supplies to South Africa only really impacted on conducting war in Angola.
    
    They had no impact on any apartheid struggle in South Africa. South Africa never used any artillery etc against local populations. The only exception to that would be helicopters which would have had a shared military/police role.
    
    All the weaponry used inside South Africa to prop up apartheid was small arms (pistols, rifles, shotguns, tear gas etc) and modified trucks for mine proofing and riot work etc.
    
    Much of the army/police action within South Africa was stopping warring black groups from killing each other. Something that continues today.

  It is really easy to take such a “black and white” stance from thousands of miles away when you can’t see the more complicated picture on the ground.
  
  I knew many white South Africans who were very anti-apartheid too, some of whom went to jail. Yes I opposed apartheid and did some things, but perhaps not up to the standards you demand.
  
  But I also knew many people who opposed the system but tried to make the system more liveable for those at the bottom end of the spectrum in day-to-day life. That’s often way more helpful to the people at the bottom end than direct militant action.
  
  I find it somewhat ironic that many of the most militant people I knew are now cozied up with the ANC with nice ANC jobs and are living in gated communities protected from the “rabble”.
  
  Those at the other end who were helping people on a day-to-day basis are still doing that because there is still a need for them to do so because getting rid of one evil has just replaced it with another evil.
  
  But that’s not the point of what I was trying to make.
  
  Applying sanctions is a response that makes the people applying the sanctions feel good about themselves that they are doing something. However it generally ends up hurting the worst off people the most.
  
  When people in Nork are already eating grass soup, does it really help to stress their exporters and shut down businesses so there is even less employment and less resources? Is that going to force the masses to rise up against The Kim family and the government?

I had to visit my GP who is a partner in a large medical practice this morning.

Whilst sitting in the crowded waiting room someone mentioned the election

It was a free discussion with most joining in. I was pleasently surprised to hear that there was no one there including the three receptionists who would vote for Labour or the Greens. Mainly because they were joined at the hip.

National & NZ First were popular followed by the cat person, TOP. Maori & ACT were not mentioned.

There was one theme and that was a not very complimentary one about Labours leader. No one likes her as she has too much to say about nothing.

How embarrising as a short distance down the road there is a large red sign with her face on it.

About time fed farmers, fonterra , Zespri and all the other myriad of rural groups got their message out. Spending a bit of money in the media would probably help get their side of the story out and given how much Jacinda is going to cost them it might be good use of money.

I heard Soper talking to Chris Lynch on ZB. He wasn’t exactly over enthused about several Labour issues.
1. To enact their promise to stop foreigners buying homes in NZ they would have to renegotiate several FTAs.( Charles Finny later confirmed Soper’s view on this)

2. There seems to be some issues around the tertiary education promises.

3. He also mentioned a quite big meeting down south that Bill English had and tax was the big issue among the crowd. Soper almost joked about how taxes were being “taken off the table” and wondered what the tax working group would do.

So it suggests making up policy as they go and /or a serious lack of experience and understanding in making these decisions.

  Once again, policy on the hoof and not thought out.

    Old golfers know a thing or two or two about handicaps. Labour’s handicap is that collectively or individually nobody seems to know any detail. Even their token native chosen deputy leader has had to be slapped down at least twice.
    
    IMO the hardest selling point was getting voters to accept that some “panel of experts” would be making decisions for things any government needs a mandate to pass into law. It seems the majority have not swallowed it simply they cannot see Taxinda’s “vision”.
    
    The next debate will be mandatory viewing but let us hope there are no more dumb questions. That could bring us the anticipated meltdown because there will be no details and all the big Labour bribes.
    Even early voting students are likely pissed off since they have already got well into their interest free loans. It is even less likely that a freezing workers children know what Uni is but only as unisex from underwear. Stick to ‘em tick Two 4 Blue and show your love for New Zealand in the nicest possible way.

Thanks Tom. Now we have an election on our hands. The dead cat has bounced and has yet to reach the ground. It is even very likely that it will bottom at 32% reversing the 23% where Taxinda took over. The kingmaker is looking more like a court Jester and has room to sink some more but the best is the Greens on 4.9%. No time to take the pressure off their throat or avoid ones’ democratic responsibility. Vote early, vote often or leave it to the last minute but just make sure you DO vote. Naturally tick TWO 4 BLUE all you beautiful people to go with the flow.

Steven Joyce pointed out that the Tax cut National put through is in law, Labour can’t just cancel it they would have to legislate to remove the Tax cut. Just a little slip up how many more.
When I look at all labour’s promises there is a big hole if they wish to keep up with all that is going on. Only way they could keep up is a hell of a lot more tax from someone or something, or ALL of us which is the most likely.

  The $11.7 billion gap in Labour’s figures is real understanding was based on figures by Robbo. This was also substantiated by BERL who stated they checked the details as provided. It quite clear in their little Red book that they intend to borrow over $7 billion to fund their promises. Then when confronted Taxinda said the new taxes would fund the rest.
  Then to cap it off they list the target for the first 100 days and near the top f the list is the pledge to restart contributions to the Cullen fund. No indication of how much but it will borrowed so suspect is of no consequence to Taxinda. Poor little darling is getting it all fed to her by Cullen/Clark/Robbo/Parker which has been too much for serious minded voters.
  Then bless his little cotton socks Winston First said what most have been screaming for. If they know what will be excluded then what will be included and taxed. Mature voters would unlikely vote for him but would never turn their back on him in their presence. At 6% he is almost at his eventual election level as the fear still remains he would be on the early call list for Labour.
  No time to sit back yet as the threat level has been eased only slightly. The most valuable protest vote is to tick Two 4 Blue to bring home a stand alone National Government and let them all sit on the opposition benches.

I would love labour to get a “thrashing” in this election because it is basically a single issue matter now TAX.
NZer’s do not want a CGT.
NZer’s were always a “do it yourself” type of person. get on with life ourselves and any free time give to the community and help those who needed help.
We did not expect to hand over our hard earned money willy nilly. We felt we had the right to make donations to those charities we believed in.
It appears that now things have changed, others will make those decisions for us. The charities we believed in are now political. I no longer give to those charities the ones that would pick someone up out of the gutter no questions asked. They have become political animals, not their role.
So unfortunately our society has changed into a place where put your hand out and it will be filled, screech the loudest about how unfair life is and you will be given. expect others to do for you, do nothing yourself and life will be fine.
No work after school to save for anything. Smart phones to “keep kids safe” only to have everyone worry about online and text bullying.
I hope that a thrashing of labour might bring everyone to their senses and realise that basically NZ is an okay place for the hardworking person. You will be rewarded and there will be enough left over to help those real unfortunates, the ones who just simply cannot help themselves.
Reward those who contribute to society and society improves. Punish those who contribute and they become very reluctant to assist anywhere. The school sports team, the plunket, the street collections. the Lions and Rotary fundraisers to name a few.
Let us please go back to how we were, that is the NZ that everyone loves.

  It’s too late to go back. We’ve accepted too many immigrants who want to live in Little Mogadishu or Karachi South for NZ to ever be one people. Then there’s the gimme class & the super rich who live in their own little worlds.

    The immigrants whom I know are pretty good people. They wish to be NZers. The people who have settled in NZ post 1900, the Dalmations, the Chinese, the Italians, to name some seem to fit in very well and contribute to our way of life. They join in the sports, and other things.
    It is some of those taken under the refugee issue that take a much longer time to involve themselves and often are hand picked by the UN from a certain echelon of society who do not wish to join with us.
    These are the ones who we do not need. They wish to change us.

    I would guess that it would be much more than that say 1 million.
    
    Think about that – one quarter of us have left.
    Imagine the empty houses and shops and lack of jobs and opportunity and vitality, and the lack of tax etc etc.
