  If Labour get in things are going to be a bit like the 1972 to 1975 Kirk government. Norm Kirk was distrustful of the public service and told his Ministers that they were to stand no nonsense from them. He virtually gagged the public service and insisted all utterances were via ministers. So when some rare chicks hatched at Mt Bruce, their progress had to be reported via the responsible Minister instead of local staff advising the media directly.
  Anyway, the Kirk government was going to ‘listen’ to the people. So when some group complained that a hydro power station was allegedly causing a problem the Electricity Minister would direct the NZ Electricity Dept (as it then was) to restrict the operation of the station to ease the alleged problem. The Department’s Assistant General Manager (a hardened professional who could be a proper b_) realised arguing was futile and made sure the limitation was applied, telephoning the station superintendent directly to make sure that it happened. This required make-up generation which had to come from the Marsden oil fired station – at a time when oil prices was skyrocketing. Norm Kirk had promised that Government charges would be held for 3 years, so this cost was not passed to customers. Finally Treasury got so alarmed that the Minister of Finance stepped in and had the Minister of Electricity replaced.
  So when Jacinda promises to ‘listen’ it would all depend who she and her people are going to listen to. For Charter Schools she will listen to NZEI and PPTA but not the Charter School pupils and their parents.

    Good post.
    
    For all his outstanding qualities and legacy as a Foreign Minister, Norman Kirk’s (and then Bill Rowling’s) third Labour government made a cluster fuck of many of its attempted reforms, even with the bad luck of the First Oil Shock on its watch. Kirk, for all his “practicality” (the man built his own house from blocks he made himself!) couldn’t translate that “common sense” into government and blamed the supposedly intransigent bureaucracy.
    
    Winston Peters more than any other current politician is of that era and paradigm of the 1935-84 “fortress economy”, and appeals to those voters who can’t see that what is “practical” i.e., matches their needs perfectly, is not necessarily easily repeatable for others on a large bureacratic scale, or there are other more expensive opportunity costs, e.g. insisting on NZ Wool carpets. Hence, when it comes to the big picture, they are impractical.
    
    But Ardern is not even that. She strikes me as no Kirk – no hands-on practical skills, but only adept at manipulating perceptions and opinions with bullshit phrases like “it’s time to have a conversation”. Usually sooner rather than later the reality fails to match the promises and it turns sour. But will that be in the next four weeks? I’m still guessing she will show her weaknesses at some point in the campaign…

        I’m waiting for her to start dropping “totally” in her dialogue if she hasn’t already. After all, that’s what the cool, hip chicks so. Gosh, if we all thought Andrew Little deserved the tag “Angry”, then I think we’re starting to see ‘lil Ms Ardern showing flashes of anger. Once you get them angry, they’ve lost it I think.

      It’s already happened. The TV party advt shows her stepping out to address a meeting. She has her back towards us and we have no idea of what is going on. Brilliant waste of money. I think the implied message might be “trust me” as nothing else is offered.

    Lots of Air bags traction control etc gives you a cheaper rate.
    
    Buy a ford mustang if you want to pay more for your ACC Levey. Ford managed to score only 2 out of five in testing due to deleting many safety aids for the Australasian market.

    ACC is a no-fault scheme.
    
    It is nothing to do with individual fault, but with costs. If you crash, through your fault or not, the chances are you’re going to get hurt worse than someone in a car crash. Therefore it costs more to fix. Therefore you pay more ACC.
    
    Same deal for everyone else: farmers pay more for ACC than office workers because farm injuries cost more to fix than paper cuts.

      Kawasaki 650cc motorcycle. Like all motorcycles, dangerous as. I briefly got a bike here in NZ, but one of the things that made me get rid of it was the huge ACC…and also the realisation of how dangerous a motorbike is. An issue which didn’t even cross my mind when I was in my teens/early 20s.

        Yeah, and whether you are at fault or not, the result is the same and much worse for a motor cyclist. Sorry, don’t have much time for motor cyclists and cyclists even though I am paranoid about them when I encounter them on the road – like the idiot cyclist last night on a country road riding without lights or reflective gear.
        
        Had a mate, took up cycling, always insistent he was careful – and he was. Killed by a truckie who was in the wrong. So my mate was not at fault…and is still dead. 🙁

      I think there is a pretty solid argument that having the greens on around 7% is actually helpful for National for this election.
      Having the Greens in the mix really makes it hard for Winnie and limits his choices.
      But then I would love to see National just to say NO to Winston now and go into the election yelling that either you are a National supporter or a Labour supporter and any vote for Winston is a vote for Taxcinda.

        Personally, I would prefer a bi-partisan approach in implementing government policies. That will work if the involved parties stick to the agreed terms from start to finish.
        
        Then again the political parties these days tend to flip-flop and switching sides before the ink is dry. I doubt this kind of thing will happen.

        We’ve had a “bi partisan” approach for the last 9 years – National administering Helen Clark’s vision for NZ. The inevitable result is what we are seeing now – the Left staging their next-phase assault. What we actually need is “right wing” governments who repeal stuff, and policy that see-saws around roughly the same overall position. With The Green Party now a shell of their former socialist selfs, is a coalition with Nats now a possibility, especially if they’re mainly focused around enviromental issues?
Really gives them the opportunity to reposition themselves as a centrist party and stick it to Labour for leaving them out in the cold for all of those years!
And also opens up more coalition options for Nats especially for 2020+

Even if you accept that it could be built that cheaply, the BCR is only 0.05.

Police caught Rollie Heke at 1.30am this morning at a house in Kaiangaroa forest. Heke had been on the run for 12 days after shooting at police in Morrinsville.

  Then we have the two who fled from Police in Tongariro, and a rahui has been placed on the area. The local tribe led a karakia at the search site and a rahui was placed on the whole area.
  
  A Police spokesman explained the function of the rahui:
  (a) To acknowledge and honour the significance of the event and the affected families.
  (b) To ensure the physical, cultural and spiritual safety of the community.
  (c) To ensure the physical, cultural and spiritual safety of the rahui area.
  
  Search efforts will not be hampered by the rahui. And this is all for two scumbags, one sought for aggravated robbery.
  
  My wife, a normally placid woman and not known for outbursts, displayed her anger at what she calls this unnecessary cultural bullshit. Just think how the Police must feel when they have to walk on eggshells when looking for these arseholes.

Jacinda won’t be able to do that – it’s not in her DNA – rather she’s a rabble rouser who loves to stir the masses up. And all this rubbish about ‘understanding farming’. No she doesn’t.     A classic example of socialist transport planning is in my neck of the woods. Auckland Transport decided Glen Innes needs to be a transport hub, so they were going to drop a bunch of useful bus routes that have been around for as long as I can remember (and I’ve been living in this area for about 35 years) and expect people to bus to GI and then jump on another bus. So instead of catching a single bus to school which takes maybe 10 minutes, my kid would have had to catch a bus to GI (at least 10 minutes), wait around for bus #2 (10 minutes?) and then catch bus #2 to school (another 10 minutes). Clever stuff. I’m pretty sure the petition everyone signed worked. Bunch of stupid idiots though for ever thinking it was a good idea.

  Why does Wellington need a tram service to the airport? It’s a domestic airport in all but name only – trans-Tasman routes are at best regional. Only the local pollies and bureaucrats view it differently. Take Wellington’s Aussie counterpart, Canberra. Similar size population as Wellington, a capital city and the only longhaul service from its airport is the SIA twice-weekly service to Singapore and Wellington. That poll covers most of NZ except the Lie-bour/Green Party stronghold of Wellington.

Let us not forget that the Green Party wants a so called light rail solution to the Labour/Green Party supported traffic grid lock in Wellington. Greens were against Transmission Gully,as well in conjunction with Labour/Green MPs and the waste of space Welington City council.
Interesting it took a National Government to make sure in a Labour/Green Party stronghold that Transmission Gully and the Kapiti by-pass was enacted.
All in the face of a pack of useless do nothings for Wellington and Greater Wellington traffic problems.

One thing I’ve noticed about Jacinda (now that she appears nightly on tv) is that she is a fantastic liar!

The latest example is despite the Greens now running a candidate in Ohariu which is a shot across O’Connor’s bows, Jacinda smiles and says everything is fine between Labour and the Greens. Ditto when she replies that Labour isn’t stealing the Green vote when they having been stealing their policies!

Sure I get that ‘all’ politicians ‘lie’, but usually they do so with a bit of a cheeky grin, but Jacinda still keeps the same straight-bat smiling face! Which I’m not sure that is a good thing because for one, we know she is lying, and two, it then brings into question whether the she is always telling the truth!

Perhaps she needs to drop the smiles and learn to deploy Helen’s death stare when faced with tricky and uncomfortable questions! 😉

I am a railfan and have travelled on numerous light rail outfits around the world BUT for an earthquake city like Wellington the battery operated buses are a safer use than things which need wires or rails.
My only concern is how the charging stations survive during an earthquake.
Funny thing I remembered … travelling on old ‘light rail’ the trams many time from centre city to suburbs back years ago before the current bias for petroleum powered vehicles. LOL

  Everyone needs to read Clifford Slater: “General Motors and the Demise of Streetcars”. There were big-picture inevitabilities about the death of trams everywhere. They were actually kept on life support for too long. One of the things that got banned to protect them, was early car drivers “scalping” riders from stops on their commute.

I hear that the labour socialist Megan Wood is now using her Doctor title again. Not a medical Dr.

Years ago when she was trying for the Christchurch Mayors position she was heavy on the Dr title and insisting that she be addressed as this.

She got put in her place and it was quickly dropped.

Now she must think it gives her the edge to be addressed as Dr.

        No way does a “Ph. D. in communications”, for example, take anywhere near the rigorous study and training it takes to become a G.P.
        
        A Ph.D. in political science, and many other qualifications from flaky social sciences are also pretty flimsy. I think you can get a Ph. D. in social work these days, too. Perhaps handy for those taking time off work to see their probation officer – “I’m off so see my doctor”.

        He and I worked closely together on a few vehicles he needed tidying up. In written communications I’d use ‘Sir Ralph’, but if I used that in person he’d ‘express his discomfort….’

        The sig other brought home her mentors thesis last week. A tome of over a thousand pages representing about four years full time work.
        Skimming it I could see not only how densely packed with knowledge it was but also the amount of research required to produce such a document.

Michael Hosking is his own worst enemy.
The other night he inferred that you needed to be on the Maori roll to vote for the Maori Party.
This, understanderbly, annoying the Maori Party and TVNZ inferred that Hosking would apologize and clarify the situation.
He did neither.
He employed some typical Hosking-speak to show his original statement was perfectly logical and only a blithering dunderhead couldn’t see that anyone could vote for the Maori Party.
We seem to live in times when humility is a dirty word amongst radio & TV personalities

Pro-Russian Bots Take Up the Right-Wing Cause After Charlottesville

The same social media networks that spread Russian propaganda during the 2016 election have been busily amplifying right-wing extremism surrounding the recent violence in Charlottesville, according to researchers who monitor the activity. It’s impossible to tell how much of the traffic originates from Russia or from mercenary sources. But there were hordes of automated bots generating Twitter posts and much more last week to help make right-wing conspiracy theories and rallying cries about Charlottesville go viral.

A sample of 600 Twitter accounts linked to Russian influence operations have been promoting hashtags for Charlottesville such as “antifa,” a term for activists on the far left; and “alt-left,” a term Trump used, which was interpreted by many as suggesting an equivalence between liberal demonstrators and white nationalists in the so-called alt-right.

      The young woman, Taqiyah Thompson, who climbed up the statue in Durham that protestors pulled down the other day belongs to the Worker’s World Party (WWP), a revolutionary Marxist-Leninist group originally formed in 1959 as a hard-line offshoot of the more moderate Socialist Workers Party. The group even support North Korea.
      
      So when you’re talking Antifa vs neo-Nazis you’re really talking Stalin vs Hitler. There isn’t one group that is better than the other. Trump was right to condemn them both. Oh, and it was Antifa throwing bottles of urine at the police two days ago – not any right-wing group.

However, to limit the opposition to “Commies” as opposed to normal, everyday people who are opposed to “Nazis” marching in their streets is to just add to the noise and confusion about what is going on.

    I think that much of the whole reason for the Left tearing down these statues is because they are a reminder that it was Democrats who supported slavery (who fought and died for it), who were Confederates, and who were the KKK. By tearing down these monuments they hope future generations won’t remember their violent, racist ways.
    
    Heck, Nancy Pelsoi’s own dad, Mayor Thomas D’Alesandro Jr, was there at the unveiling of a statue of Lee and Jackson 50 years ago and said at the time, “Today, with our nation beset by subversive groups and propaganda which seeks to destroy our national unity, we can look for inspiration to the lives of Lee and Jackson to remind us to be resolute and determined in preserving our sacred institutions.”

I am currently reading (on and off) Lincoln: A Life, Volume 2, by Michael Burlingame, and also, Wrong on Race: The Democratic Party’s Buried Past, by Bruce Bartlett (a real eye-opener about the Democratic Party’s racist history).

        Why does it matter to you? After all, according to your own ideology on moral issues, the South was not wrong in any objective way. Slavery was (more or less) accepted as right in the South, so on the basis of your claim that social consensus determines what is right or wrong, you have no basis for criticizing the South in any objective way.

        While it would have been commendable had the southern leaders decided to move with the tide of human progress and reject slavery; they did not do so, and eventually resolved on rebellion and war.

        I imagine if you were a young white in the South, the pressure to join the Confederate Army would have been overwhelming. Similarly with the Union Army for young men in the North. They didn’t get much choice.
        
        A bit like Germans in 1944-45 being conscripted into the Waffen SS. It wasn’t a moral choice by that part of the war. The novelist Günter Grass was conscripted into an anti-aircraft gun crew when he was still at high school, and then, near the end of war, was conscripted into an SS panzer division and was badly wounded in a Russian attack. Kids who were deserted were frequently hanged and their corpses left swinging in public as a warning.
        
        Sympathy for the Confederates must have remained high after the Civil War in many parts of America. Consider the way Jesse James and his
        outlaws were regarded as heroes by many.

    Maybe even sooner than 2030 Captain. There’s a long range version of the Dreamliner on the drawing boards. When I worked in Fiji in the 70s trans-Pacific flights from North America landed at both Honolulu and Nadi enroute to Auckland & Sydney. Tahiti and Pagopago were also used as refuelling stops.
    
    There’s an excellent book called Zulu Alpha Echo written by Guy Clapshaw, a retired Air NZ captain that relates many a humorous chapter about that era of aviation. A great read.

      I looked after an inbound tourism company’s operation in Nadi and we had to turn out every morning between 0100 and 0500 to meet the Air NZ, Qantas, Pan Am, Canadian Pacific and BOAC flights that brought hundreds of passengers in from North America and Europe. They were real heydays for Fijian tourism. Your comment re the smell of avgas brought it all back given the basic nature of Nadi Airport’s facilities then. After all, his organisation is the mirror image of BLM and Antifa; both sides want segregation and are overtly racist. Re: Churchill: the Movie (NP June 9, 2017)

Churchill certainly acted on occasion as a “doddering fool” as portrayed in the new movie Churchill, reviewed by Chris Knight (NP June 9, 2017). However, to dismiss his disastrous seeming ineptitude as merely drunken stupidity, hardly does him credit. The Great Man was arguably the most profoundly evil war criminal of all time. He was also probably the greatest con-artist ever, spellbinding the media and whole otherwise-sane populations into thinking WWII was a splendid idea, even though the catastrophic experience of WWI was still within recent living memory.

In 1939, Churchill and his “War Party” campaigned for war against Germany in the full knowledge that the real threat to Western Civilization was Bolshevist Russia, not our cultured Christian German kinfolk who had done nothing to harm us. Clear confirmation of his perfidy emerged when Germany and Russia invaded Poland and Britain declared war only on Germany’ when the occasion called for neutrality and eventually a NATO-style alliance to overthrow the cruel Soviet dictatorship and liberate its terrorized subjects.

Britain had a second chance to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in 1940 when Hitler offered a munificent peace treaty that would have saved the British Empire and millions of lives, but Churchill, inflamed by hatred imparted by his secret, vengeful Zionist paymasters, rejected the offers and doomed Britain, and Western Civilization to inevitable collapse.

For this calamitous, contrived blunder and his many other fatal decisions, “that Bastard Churchill”, as he was known to colleagues who understood him, does not deserve enshrinement in movies as a statesman, no matter how inept, but rather should be condemned in perpetuity as an arch-traitor and war monger supreme, responsible for incalculable loss of life and loss of freedom, especially freedom of speech, by survivors and their descendants

Churchill’s image as a competent and fearless leader is a myth that can be demolished easily by any objective, intrepid researcher. The myth originated when Churchill was sent to South Africa as a young correspondent to cover the Boer War. To create a story, he persuaded a gullible local British Commander to send an armoured train into Boer territory and to take him along. The Boers readily captured the train, taking the troops and Churchill prisoner. Churchill, left unguarded, easily “escaped”, and was given undeserved acclaim, while the British Commander was reprimanded for his folly.

The notoriety helped Churchill win a seat in Parliament and eventually appointment as First Lord of the Admiralty, He soon revealed his bloated ego and incompetence in the Dardanelles Campaign when thousands of Australians and New Zealanders were mindlessly sacrificed in a hopeless assault (a lethal stupidity Churchill repeated when he sent Canadian soldiers to be slaughtered on the impassable beach-front at Dieppe).

In the mid-‘thirties, the discredited warmonger, after accepting large payments from Jewish-American millionaires to stave off his impending bankruptcy, formed a group known as the “War Party” that strongly urged Britain to make war on Germany. After war was declared and the British Army quickly defeated, Britain was left defenceless, but spared by the pro-British Hitler who allowed the 300,000 man British Army to leave France unhindered. and offered Britain an honourable peace that would have preserved the Empire intact, with German military protection if required. Although Hitler’s magnanimity made possible the “miracle of Dunkirk”, Churchill, contemptuously and contemptibly, rejected the peace offer, sealing the fate of hundreds of millions, dooming Western Christian civilization and sacrificing his own country, simply to satisfy his quest for Supreme War Lord status and to satisfy his Shylockian Zionist paymasters.

As for hero status, he was a coward, cynically trashing the lives of trusting subjects, military and civilian, while ensuring his own safety (during the Blitz, Churchill would leave London when Intelligence informed him of an impending Luftwaffe attack, then return to bomb sites as soon as the raid ended for photo-ops, giving the impression he had shared the danger).

To satisfy his blood-lust and ensure, before the war’s end, his place as the most indefatigably sadistic war criminal of WWII, he ordered the fire-bombing of the undefended City of Dresden, knowing it was packed with women and children fleeing the rapacious Red Army and that most would be burned alive in the holocaust. (W/C “Giff” Gifford of St. John, NB, who unwittingly led an RCAF Squadron in the diabolical attack said, upon learning of the purpose and result of the raid (as told to the Senate CBC “Valour & Horror” enquiry) that he “felt remorse every day” for the rest of his life for the murder of the innocents and mindless obliteration of Europe’s most beautiful architectural treasures).

Churchill was my childhood hero for whom I was – literally, by enlisting in Air Crew – prepared to die. I now see him for what he was; a drunken, unscrupulous, corrupt, cynical, racist, immoral, dishonest, self-serving arch-traitor. Ironically, it was his nation’s would-be saviour, the much reviled Adolf Hitler, whom I was taught to hate, and who graciously offered an optimum solution which would have handed Britain not only a real victory but also would have liberated Stalin’s terrified subjects. A genuine statesman, he would have made possible a permanent Pax Germanicus-Britannicus-Americanus that would have freed the Western Democracies from rule by a cunning, parasitical, hostile, powerful Enemy Within (against whom Hitler repeatedly warned) who were (and are) a far greater threat to our freedom than ever was posed by our resurgent, friendly, compatible, cultured German kin..

Churchill became an icon by combining outrageous chutzpah with cunning, deception, duplicity and unmatched eloquence but as a leader was hardly more competent than Steven Harper, and couldn’t hold a candle to Mackenzie King, or Hitler, for that matter. Most young Canadians of my era fell for his oratory, and many paid with their lives.

Had justice prevailed, Churchill would have been charged, convicted and hanged as the greatest war criminal of WWII, if not of all time. By declaring war, then prolonging the war instead of accepting Hitler’s generous offer of an honourable peace in 1940, he caused 150 million unnecessary casualties, incalculable suffering, destroyed Britain, the country he cynically pretended to save, eliminated Christian Germany as a bulwark against the genocidal Soviet dictatorship, betrayed Poland into Stalin’s clutches and, calamitously, as it turned out, abandoned innocent, defenceless Palestinians to the tender mercies of sadistic, predatory Zionists.

Churchill set the stage for the Cold War, Middle East wars, Third World chaos, ethnic conflict, refugee invasions and subversion of the Western Christian democracies, leaving them under hostile Jewish hegemony – a much more deadly threat to their race, traditions, property, freedom and ultimate survival than the invented threat posed by Hitler’s Germany. Had it not been for Churchill’s diabolical treachery, which cannot be excused by mere bouts of drunken megalomania, the world today would be, in every respect, a far better and safer place.

  I have just finished a book about Rudolph Hess’ flight to Scotland in May 1941. EAD, thank you for bringing that lengthy letter to my attention. How about all the morons use public transport and then I get to the Airport quicker on a shuttle?

‘If the corruption trial of Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez ends in a conviction, Republican Gov. Chris Christie would be responsible for picking his successor, potentially heralding the end of Obamacare.

Republicans in the Senate were just one vote away from passing an Obamacare repeal last month, and if Menendez gets forced out of office on a conviction, Christie, a Republican and long-time Trump supporter, would almost certainly pick a Republican to replace him. Christie will leave office Jan. 16, however, so the jury will need to hand down a conviction before then if Senate Republicans hope to secure the potential 53-37 majority.

Menendez stands charged with using his office to further the business interests of long-time friend Dr. Salomon Melgen, who was convicted in April of stealing $105 million through Medicare fraud between 2008 and 2013. Records show the senator accepted several campaign donations from Melgen, including vacations to Paris and the Dominican Republic, ABC News reported.

Prosecutors allege that Menendez repeatedly met with then-Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and acting Medicare administrator Marilyn Tavenner to intercede on Melgen’s behalf in Medicare disputes.’

Despite what some MORONS have been saying, I don’t think the 2018 mid terms are going to go well for the Dems either.
