It was once the place of the biggest (by number of pupils,) college schoool in New Zealand.
The lake that it is beside should not exist as it was never approved but built on a whim by the man in charge of the National building organisation at the time of the dam building. Folklore has it that he didn’t lose his job until there was a national rowing competition held on the non-existent lake and somebody back in works noticed.

  Most if not all of the Kiwi rowing legends would have graced the waters of Lake Ruataniwha as a college rower at the Maadi Cup regatta. One of the world’s most beautiful courses along with Lake Karapiro.

  Wikipedia says the lake itself was approved, but the rowing course that was put into it was financed by public works, and the rowing clubhouse had bridging finance from public works. Max Smith was forced into retirement based on allegations this bridging was misuse of public funds. Sounds like he was a local hero though.

  The proprietor of “The Whitehouse”, a well known house of ill repute – sorry sex workers’ place of work – in Auckland wished to place a large ad saying “PROSTITUTES WANTED’ just after the law changed…Granny Herald baulked and said “No no, we call them escorts or masseuses”..Mr Le Gros said “Run the ad as I want it, or no more ads for my premises[ he owns a couple I think] in your paper”

Snort! When you get to my age, pubic events tend to occur in hospitals with “12 year old doctors” who are carefully trained to not appear to be distressed by looking at “grandma’s old bod”. Trust me, I know these things.

DPF; You say you didn’t know Twizel could be so lively…clearly you have never lived in the provinces!

I am reliably informed that the first ever key party in New Zealand was held in Hawera, Taranaki, in 1972 at the house of a now prominent and very respectable local lawyer…

And you’d be even more surprised by what we get up to out here when the moon is full, and the weather is clement…

      Speaking of lawyers, this is perhaps why I shan’t mention names. Johnny may still remember his lawyer parents taking off the same night every week in a taxi and wondering where they went. Or little baby sat Jimmy whose Police dad would take off with mum also in a taxi. Nay, some things best remain unsaid.

  The Mackenzie Country Motor Inn, Combined Services Club, RSA, Fire Station, Police station, Squash Club and Staff Hostel were all great places for a cold ale in 1980’s Twizel … a lot of watering holes for what was then a small town. We were a friendly lot!
