TVNZ said to be in ‘crisis talks’ about Breakfast (though this is denied):

TV3’s ‘The A.M. Show’ gaining ground, doubling numbers in six months while Breakfast has dropped significantly.

Now, why would that be? Hmmm…

Why does Newstalk ZB retain its number one radio position? Why did Paul Henry triple his numbers in six months? Why does Hosking shit all over the Project?

Because all of the above clearly feature and reflect the opinions of the majority of kiwis, without putting too fine a point on it, centre right voters. These views are always countered by a liberal voice, but they are there.

However, TVNZ’s Breakfast has, as its three main anchors, Hillary Barry and Jack Tame and the bogan sports chick – all totes on-message in all the usual SJW themes; Trump Bad, Smacking Bad, Inequality Bad, 3rd World Immigration Good, and so on.

Watch TVNZ try to ‘fix Breakfast’ by getting someone like Ali Mau on board.

Honestly, does the National administration actually want a dividend? Where is the Minister?

I mentioned this story on the July 12 General Debate in reply to Kowtow and now Morgoths Review has the exact same observation on the MSMs reporting story of the “man” who have gave birth to a baby girl.

What is incredible is that the Newspapers in their earnest tones reported this as fact. They regularly referred to this woman that gave birth as a man despite it being impossible for any “man” to give birth.

This should be satire and for 97% of people at the moment will be seen as such but given time, an agenda driven MSM, “hate speech” laws, “modern” education and in 10 years time 1/4 of the population will believe this fiction as fact.

Dont believe me? – Just look as how “imminent global warming” went from being a crank theory in the 1980s (the decade after the MSM warned of an imminent Ice Age) to now having governments tax cows for farting ?

Do you ever wonder why this bay shit crazy anti logic and reason position is being pushed? Morgoths Review surmises in his excellent article as follows:

  If you allow people to choose their gender, then an individual whose sex is female can select “male” as their gender, and demand that the authorities accept and recognize their gender as “male.”
  Once legally recognized as being “male,” then this sort of news headline will become more common.

      My objection is to do with the language. English hasn’t caught up with the reality of what is happening.
      Apparently we can now change our gender (even if we cannot truly change our biological sex (XX or XY). English needs to distinguish between “gender” and “sex” or else end the laws that enable the two to be different, i.e., a male identifying himself as having a gender that is female, or vice versa (as in this reported case).
      Of course, this kind of article is wonderful for newspaper sales. Maybe this is why we are reading more of them.
      In the meantime, the folks with common sense will see what is happening, and quietly have a word to their children about it. (And children are not stupid (remember the story about the King who had no clothes)).

    At primary school I was a bit of a tomboy and distinctly remember wanting to be a boy. Something to do with them seeming to have more fun than girls’. I grew out of that phase.
    Children don’t understand the sexual part of one’s identity so shouldn’t be put in the position by their parents’ of deciding their gender before they reach maturity.

    I recall stories from relatives about life in Japan during the late 1930s and 1940s. There was enormous pressure on the individual (and by extension, on their family members) to “pretend that certain things were true–because the authorities said so.”
    It makes me so said to see that in my lifetime, the same kind of sentiment is once again on the rise. Have we learned nothing about the behavior and mentality of totalitarianism and how important it is to the totalitarianism State to be able to force its people to parrot the official line?

Just reading the immigration statistics on stuff

Why are 25% of recent immigrants from Fiji and Samoa? How does that work on a points system and going forward we will need less and less labourers and service workers

Of the two Indian immigrant examples both came on student visas to study cooking and now have residency by complain it’s hard to raise a family on a chefs wage. Student visas are a rort and is a way for lower skilled people to bypass the points system.

    Um, or more the presidency has all the powers of an 18th Century king – as it was the only form of executive the framers of the American constitution could conceive of at the time – but with checks and balances.
    
    And I think you could argue that at times American Presidents – Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln and FDR – have acted in ways that could be perceived and argued as tyrannical, no matter what the pragmatic “emergency” they were dealing with at the time. Written constitutions protect very little, IMHO, not compared to an informed and empowered populace, IMHO – which also must be restrained due to the possibility of mob rule via the ballot box and illegitimate public discourse.
    
    Give me good old Westminster pragmatism with a monarch…

        We don’t, but as per the benefits and nature of Westminster constitutional pragmatism, the monarchy provides good continuity with the past. Plus, other than with left-wing or Irish Catholic malcontents, the Windsors are seen as heads of state who unite, rather than the divisive nature of elected Presidents, even if they are only figureheads, e.g., President Helen Clark or Jim Bolger.

      But it’s clear from their writings at the time that they were more thinking of the Roman republic and the Roman empire when they were designing the US constitutional system. The checks and balances were put there to stop a President going Nero on them.

  I don’t think he necessarily needs to be treated like a King (well not all the time). Maybe they just get the fact that Trumpy has some wires that weren’t ever connected. You can see that in his vocabulary. I think he knows it as well which is why he uses Ivanka who is articulate. For example, I expect he was simply trying to be nice to Mdme Macron but he’s so terminally clumsy that he goofed it up like – like so many other things. Who, for example would describe a trade deal as “very big and very powerful”? Anyone who gets he has some loose wires or otherwise gets Trumpyspeak would simply take him to mean something along the lines of “comprehensive and far-reaching”. He could also be forgiven for getting progressively more peeved that not only are some of his complete ratbag predecessors shown far greater respect than he’s accorded, there’s been an active campaign to drag him down that pre-dated his election and has employed some despicable tactics. To someone not schooled in politics and used to having his own way, that has to have an effect.

I don’t visit The Standard and I don’t know much about, or care either way about their over-zealous banning. Sure – you are correct – banning is not the same as hiding but what I was trying to convey was that there is a certain element of mob rule here which overrides “unapproved views”.

(The mother is 36 years old. If she had 1 child every 2 years, she would have had taken 18 years (since the age of 18) to achieve this.)
Her comment at the end of the article is telling, “I didn’t plan on being a solo mum, but things happen.”

      Plenty of Catholic families have 5, 6, 7, 8, 9+ kids. Do you judge the mothers of those families?
      
      What if the mother + father of said Catholic families have a large falling out, and they split. Do you judge the single mother?
      
      What if the father dies in a terrible car accident and the mother is left on her own. Do you judge the single mother?
      
      What if the divorce is complicated, the mother can not immediately find a job (or can not leave her children) and ends up in financial woes. Do you judge the single mother?
      
      What if the mother suffers large scale mental health problems from the death of her husband which cause her to spiral into a drinking/drug problem. Do you judge the single mother?
      
      Like I said, when you say “should we ought to encourage this behaviour” you’ve absolutely no idea what bought her to that state but seem quite happy to provide moral judgement without offering any immediate thoughts about why she is not recieving the roof over her head that she requires just as much as some other, whom you may not pass judgement on.

        A good Catholic woman (and her husband) would be compelled by their faith and encouraged by their extended family and local church community to have a large family. In the event of an crisis such as you describe, I would expect Catholic friends, family and church community to step in and fill the breach.
        What of this woman? Does she have the same support as your hypothetical good Catholic wife?
        – Where is her husband?
        – Where is her family?
        – Where is her network of friends and community?
        I put it to you that her husband, family and support-providers are in the form of the State, funded by the workers of New Zealand.
        Ought the State be playing the role of “husband”?

        (b) So you disagree with Southern Raider above when s/he says “why can’t she just keep her legs shut”? If you’re Catholic, that’s alright? And if you’re Catholic and you end up in NZ Housing accomodation in this manner it’s also alright? Then we (collectively) have no worries about whether she keeps her legs shut, or not?
        
        – Where is her husband?
        – Where is her family?
        – Where is her network of friends and community?
        
        I don’t know. You tell me. You can’t, because we don’t know. But it seems a number of people are quite happy to fill those gaps with negatives and just fill someone’s life story into a category of their chosing, without considering why she is not being given the help she requires. That’s the whole point.

Tell me – when the only facts you know are – she is 36, has 9 kids and is a solo Mum how can you then say put forward a generalisation about her family and support? You know nothing of them.         What a load of rubbish .. A Responsible Society as we largely have takes care of its subjects affected by such happenings ….. BUT a responsible member does not arrange their life to have children they have no way of supporting.
        The Catholic Church has yet to understand the wrongfulness of their entreaty to have lots of children, which is purely a ‘power game’ versus other churches.

        I don’t disagree with this, I’m not defending the right of anyone to bludge of the system, I’m simply saying that it is sad that so many people will jump to a conclusion about one person’s entire life story, and entire reason for being, without considering that “shit just happens” and then questioning why she hasn’t been given what she requires to live (and make things better for her children) in a timely fashion.

        I love the way people sound oh so knowledgeable about what Catholics can and can’t do. For a start there is absolutely no encouragement these days for Catholics to have big families. It is left completely to the individuals. Secondly I know of two big Catholic families and in both cases the families are comfortably well off, have well educated their children and have never sought state assistance. You will find, if you care to look that Catholic families are the same as any other i.e 2 to 3 children. Souther Raider got it right.

        You seem to know very little about modern Catholics. Most of us decide how many kids we would like and then ensure that no more arrive. A few have “surprises”, the majority statistically have no more or less than the general population. Large Catholic families also tend to have one, female, non gender divers or “what the fuck” mother, and generally the same, male, nongender diverse father. We tend not to name our ten sons “Patrick” and then distinguish them by the surnames of their fathers….

        I think their might be a genetic element too. In many societies the males have lived apart from the women and their children. A remnant of that in our genetic pool could explain some males opting out of home making as fathers. It may be linked to other factors in class placement. That could be disproven if women from higher socioeconomic strata were shown to have similar experience of males not settling. I know of many status solo mothers who are struggling to survive their men often haven chosen another “chick”.
        
        Ministry shows almost all women aim to start a stable relationship and continue but after childbirth the male finds a way out. As we no longer live in villages the women have to fend for themselves as best they can. We can’t judge them for being human. Any support is well justified.

        Kev: the “genetic component ” is that males of most species are merely sperms donors, not fathers, including primitive humans.
        It is only in relatively civilized societies that males learn of responsibility to their children.
        The “man problems” are that the males won’t man up and act like men.
        Often because they never had a decent male role model.
        Also, most non-western societies are sexist and males think they can get as many women as they like pregnant, and only support the kids if they want to.
        They are often foisted on their maternal grandparents and their societies accept this.
        This is why most solo mums with umpteen kids are Maori or Polynesian.

        The message I get is that many women have man problems. They believe they have the start of something wonderful and after a year or so he’s off: no care, minimum responsibility. As many are lousy earners the males pay little to the state in child support while the mother gets assistance.
        
        I have watched this at close hand. Many of the women repeat this experience with a similar type of male. There may be a genetic component in that too.

        1. What has this story got to do with Catholics? You seem obsessed with a conviction that Catholics today still have very large families. Got any evidence of that?
        
        2. There’s a great difference when a family has a husband around. Such a family (whatever its size) tends to be more unified and to have structure, with support from relatives on both sides and the surrounding community.
        
        3. Question: How many different men have fathered the 9 unfortunate children in this story? You keep making comparisons with ‘Catholic families’, but we have no idea in this case whether there has ever been a true ‘family’ in the sense that most of us could conceptualise.
        
        4. Where did a mother’s drug addiction come into this story? I can find no reference to any addiction (other than sexual addiction, perhaps) in the Herald’s story.
        
        Finally, a few additional comments covering apparent gaps in the story. The actual mother-of-nine has made mistakes, as we all have, and deserves our sympathy and ultimately our assistance as a society. That will happen, I have no doubt, but the welfare system does have its inevitable limitations. I hope sincerely that such help arrives sooner rather than later. Maybe the Herald has done the woman – and us – a great favour by publicising her plight and that of the 9 children. But, being a pragmatist, I’ve learned the hard way not to accept – without caution – everything that I read in the Herald.

        I’m guessing that if some middle aged white male CEO fired staff on Christmas Eve for no other reason than to hit his bonus numbers, and had form in this respect, we’d both judge him as being a bit of an arse, with little social conscience, and quite possibly a bit of a sociopath. With a high degree of probability, we’d be right.
        
        I doubt either of us would be jumping through convoluted hoops to excuse his behaviour. Looks like a duck, walks like a duck, probably is a duck.
        
        It’s pretty obvious, with a high degree of probability, that women who repeatedly breed, given limited means, aren’t fulfilling their end of the social contract. Will the kids be impoverished? Near 100% certainty. Why? Maths.
        
        Many on the left will jump through endless hoops to not grasp truth when it comes to beneficiary cases. The left has no mechanism to criticise such cases. The mechanism is in place when in comes to middle aged white CEOs, however.
        
        All about power, you see. A distorted left lens when everything is viewed as a power struggle.

    Unfortunately in this case we need to look after the kids.

  And itstricky is right, we don’t know of her circumstances. The reporter isn’t going to tell you things like, she has a bad credit history, doesn’t pay her rent, damaged previous property. They would tell you things like she was widowed after the birth after her last child or if her previous rental property had been sold because that would pull on those heart strings.
  
  What we can assume because she’s a single mum on benefit is that she will be receiving $325 for sole parent support, and assuming one of the kids is of late teen years, roughly $400 in family tax credits. I would hope that she is helping her friend pay power and of course buy her own food and clothing without any need for extra grants from winz but experience tells me otherwise. However I digress!
  
  Say this mum managed to save $100 a week for the last year? Able to pay for her own bond… wouldn’t that impress a potential landlord?
  
  Did the reporter even bother to ask her how much benefit she gets and where it goes?
  
  Of course not. Because they know the average kiwi is sick and tired of supporting this entitlement mentality.
  
  There are some beneficiaries that need support. A lot of support! And there are those that are just plain lazy and greedy.

      The women in that situation are invariably not stupid. Some are have high IQ’s and fall on difficult times. With 9 children she may have had a twin or two and been widowed or her fellas in jail, had a bad accident, just left or chosen again.
      
      Whatever her benefit she will struggle. That doesn’t provide much beyond a basic frugal lifestyle which is beyond the ability of many beneficiaries to cope with. Expect accommodation problems with 9 children.
      
      Did she bring this on herself? What does “bring on” mean? The bonding contract in NZ implies a right to breed with an underlying guarantee from the state. Some people are naturally more fertile than others and we do not limit rights based on that.
      
      The self limiting 30+ class bring their own expensive problems requiring subsidies for conception. The youthful make mistakes and there seems to be a subclass that start young whose men don’t stick around either.
      
      That’s our stratified society. Be pleased that we have economical cover now that we have left our villages.

Like State TV’s perpetual ridiculing of Trump, the hounding of Barclay may be a way for Leftist journos covertly to put the boot into National and the Right generally. Let’s hope not.

A journalist says the tape recorder he left that recorded Key talking to ACT in an Auckland restaurant at the previous election was accidentally left behind and left on. Okay, accepted by the media. When Barclay seems to argue that the recording he took of his staff was accidentally left on, sneers.

Our media should look outwards and spend less time looking in the mirror.

The media isn’t the message, it’s the messenger. Marshall McLuhan, the man who originally said the “media is the message” meaning something a little different, is now largely forgotten, in the trash can of technology history.

    Reporters are frequently fobbed off and lied to about people’s availability. That’s a challenge in their job. A friend tells me that reporters soon develop a thick skin, just as insurance sellers do. Or was that the reporters of old, mainly male and taught their craft on the job rather than at university or polytechnic?
    
    People usually allow moral exceptions to their judgment about lying. The well known one is: you are at a cross roads and a woman runs past you, terrified. Soon after a man runs up, carrying axe, and demands, “Which way did she go?” Overwhelmingly, people accept it would be morally right to lie to the pursuer.
    
    Similarly, many of us think it fine to lie about, say age, to escape a market-survey caller who phones just as we are about to sit down to a meal.
    
    Some of us would find it morally acceptable to lie to one of the commission door knockers on the bludge for Amnesty Aotearoa NZ or one of the other Leftist charities, or to lie to some bludger trying to cadge from us at a shopping centre.
    
    In this sense, I think staff of a politician who in effect is “working out his notice” from the position he was elected to, are morally entitled to lie about the politician’s availability to reporters who are hounding him. Provided the politicians is happy with that, of course.
    
    The great Barclay hunt repeats what happened to the rather gauche National List MP from Christchurch who was hounded right out of Parliament by the media after one night’s drunken disgrace – a relatively minor disgrace in my opinion.
    
    Barclay was wrong, and in my opinion deserves to go.
    
    However, Leftists trumpet the right of convicts to free university education, to driving courses and to training and jobs when they complete their shortened sentences.
    
    Contrast this with the media hounding of Barclay, whose career has been destroyed. What does the Leftist media further want to happen to him? Ritual suicide?
    
    Or, is my suspicion correct, that hounding Barclay is a covert way for Leftist media to put the boot into National?

      What’s that got to do with it, and what are you going on about?
      As I understand it, “allegations were made in two phone conversations between Norris [Fairfax] and a senior member of the PM’s staff, as well as phone conversations with the head of Parliamentary Service, David Stevenson. Stevenson also dropped the bombshell that police were now involved. (Those were the complainants, not Barclay’s Office as you said earlier).
      They had been told “Kelly and her cameraman “barged” into Barclay’s office and harassed and intimidated staff – even pursuing them to the back of the office, leaving the staff feeling threatened and under siege.”
      The video that I saw didn’t show that – far from it. Is that what you saw?
      At this point in time, it looks to me like Barclay’s staff “misled” the PM’s Office and the Head of Parlimentary Service who then when on to complain to Fairfax.

Why is this important enough to be featured? Someone grizzled about a reporter chasing them and that’s suddenly news?
        
        Do reporters go through careers without ever having people call their editor to bitch about them? I doubt it.
        
        It’s Fairfax, not Barclay’s staff who have built this into a media “story”.
        
        Why was the reporter’s entrance to the electorate office recorded on video unless some sort of media stunt was under way? Was the camera just accidentally on?
        
        Regardless of the details of what happened between the Fairfax journalists and the electorate office staff, why is Fairfax still hounding Barclay? If there’s a police investigation about Barclay and his previous staff, why not wait for the outcome and report that?

        To be fair Jack5, you choose to raise the matter here, not me.
        The comtretemps between the party electorate office and a reporter isn’t interesting in and of itself, I agree. I imagine it happens regularly. But that’s where things get odd. It wasn’t the party electorate office that complained. Instead they went all the way to the PM’s office and Parlimentary Services about it. When those august bodies then complained (with mention of police action?), the media released their video that showed that the party electorate office doesn’t appear to play with a straight bat.
        As far as I can tell, this little media fiasco is the electorate office’s own creation.

  About the “journalist” (cameraman) who left the “tape recorder” that “accidentally” recorded Key and Banks. Let me rephrase what happened in easy to understand everyday language (and I don’t mean you Jack, I mean for the duplicitous MSM who deflected and spun what actually happened).
  
  Think about it like this, in essence the camerman left what could be considered to be equivalent to a “bugging device” or “eavesdropping device” on the table. It wasn’t a “tape recorder” as such, it was a wireless microphone (or in computer-speak, equivalent to a “blue-tooth” wireless microphone). Sure at this point we can give him the benefit of the doubt that he left it there by “accident” (because in his own words at the time he along with the MSM were asked to leave the cafe).
  
  The two things that happened next can’t be considered an “accident” though.
  
  1. His videocamera (to which the wireless microphone was transmitting to) was Recording (Key/Banks’ conversation). Videocameras don’t record by accident, they record when the operator pushes the record button. So how come then it was recording? (I think people can draw their own conclusions. Pity the MSM ignore all this).
  
  2. The cameraman, contracted to the NZ Herald, must have told NZ Herald staff about the “accidental” recording because according to the following NZH article NZH staffers became aware of it and organised for the cameraman to drop off the recording so they could listen to it.

RNZ news follows a snide and snaky report about a judge in Hawaii challenging aspects of President Trump’s travel ban on 6 predominantly Muslim countries with a report of an attack in Egypt that has left a number of female tourists dead. Of course, the reason for the killings is not as yet known, the ideology of the assailant is not stated, there is no mention as yet of his ‘disturbed mental state’. That will come in due course.

Egypt is not one of the countries included in the ban, but the very reason the ban is in place is to deter this type of attack occurring in the USA. It’s a pity that those responsible for RNZ news cannot make the obvious connection.

  One thing Kiwis might not be clear about is “the 9th circuit court of appeals” in the USA. That is like a repeated charade; they are a pack of fruit loops to whom lefty agitators take all their cases; they hand down totally unconstitutional lefty-activist edicts; which the Supreme Court then overturns in just however many weeks it takes to wind through the machinery.
  
  It is a pity the Constitution did not have some form of feedback loop to just impeach obvious abusers of the system like what the “9th circuit” has become.

      The reasons for the reversals can be all sorts of things, but the 9th circuit is disproportionately lefty judicial activism that outraged all constitutional principles. The other courts reversals are much more innocuous matters as a rule.

      The safest is not to have it. Two years ago had an injection and finished up with polymialgia. Its a shit of a disease. Hopefully goes away within 3 years. Lots and lots of older people getting it.
      In a house on Thursday and of 5 people 3 of us had or have had it.
      
      Strikes older people. Seems to be people with a lowered immune system for some reason. Freezes up your hips so you can’t move. Can’t lie down nor anything. Usual pain killers don’t work. Prendisone the only relief.
      
      Met lots of people since it struck me that have been afflicted. Been told by the specialist at Tga Hospital they have some 800 people registered with it. Couldn’t diagnose it when I went in there.

A prominent British university is to take down busts of white founders of one of its world-famous institutes. Responding to student pressure, these are to be replaced by items less alienating to ethnic minorities.

Some academics at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience at King’s College, London, believe current teaching is too “intimidating” for ethnic minorities.

The Telegraph reports that the moves come two years after King’s College sparked controversy by removing a photograph of Lord Carey, the former of Archbishop of Canterbury, in response to his opposition to gay marriage.

“Sorry, this is a sports shop”, was the answer.

The next day he did it again then on the third day same again Then on the fourth day the customer asked again, ” a pack of condoms please”.

“What do you really want?” The cashier asked.

After plucking up the courage he asked, ” Can I have an Auckland Blues Supporter’s Jersey please”.

Hamilton the next big thing: projects line up for city of the future

It looks like there’s no stopping Hamilton. Big-ticket projects lined up include two major inland ports, major expressway links, a new riverside theatre, a $20 million Fonterra factory expansion, the Sevens series, a whole new suburb backed by a $272m Government loan, plus the proposed Waikato medical school.

Forget retirement from Eketahuna to the bright lights of Masterton! Go and live in the city of the future instead!

The 3-way coalition seems a bit unstable – and the election campaign (when the gloves come off and they attack each other in debates) hasn’t even started yet!

      It’s interesting watching the senior’s reaction to Winston Peters Nostra. I recall in one of the 90s elections being in Carterton when the Peter’s Black Bus show wheeled into town.
      
      The massive bus parked under the town clock & after a delay the small, immaculately turned out politician alighted. The oldies were rapt…..their hero had arrived. Cheers drowned out clapping mixed with an undertone of whispered oohs & aarhs. I half expected a volley of used bloomers to be showered upon him but, mercifully, decorum won the day.
      
      My laborious point is that never underestimate the magnetic attraction Winston holds for the geriatric & semi senile……Chuck is a loyal & dedicated groupie! 🙂

        At one level you have to stand back and admire a person who can survive in the political wilderness, election after election, using an elderly support base. The problem with an elderly support base, of course, is that people go and need to be replaced with new entrants. The golden oldies card seems to have done the trick. And Winston has made everyone else pay for it!
        
        (Mind you, I seem to remember Johnboy telling us that, gold card or no gold card, he wouldn’t be caught dead on a public bus with the great unwashed. Five-star transport or nothing for him!)

        Overlooked in the current “Winston will get rid of the racist (sic) Maori seats” analysis is that, for a while there, he had all the Maori seats locked up. So he forged an unlikely coalition with the blue rinse Rob’s Mob brigade and tangata whenua. Energy-saving hobbit house in WA South West

Nigel Kirkwood, who fondly calls himself a modern-day hobbit, is living in his dream home in WA’s South West. This earth-sheltered house in Quindalup, around 20 kilometres from Busselton, is far from a typical home. There is almost 1,000 tonnes of dirt on top of the house, which helps it maintain a consistent temperature all year around. Mr Kirkwood said he saved up to $100 a cycle by not having heating and cooling. … The house is held together with almost 19 tonnes of high quality steel and covered in Polyurea water-proof coating, which makes it incredibly fire-proof.

Not exactly my idea of a “dream home”…

Where’s National’s ‘corporate welfare’ reform?

Which of the maor political parties are pushing for ‘corporate welfare’ reform and shrinking the long-term dependency of the private sector on our public monies?

Where is the ‘devilish detail’ at both local and central government level – which shows EXACTLY where our public rates and taxes are being spent on private sector consultants and contractors?

Why aren’t the names of the consultant(s)/ contrators(s) – the scope, term and value of these contracts, published in Council or central government Annual Reports – so this information on the spending of OUR public monies is available for public scrutiny?

Where are the publicly-available ‘Registers of Interests’ for those local government elected representatives, and staff responsible for property and procurement, in order to help guard against possible ‘conflicts of interest’ between those who ‘give’ the contracts and those who ‘get’ the contracts?

Where’s the ‘transparency’?

Given that New Zealand is ‘perceived’ to be the least corrupt country in the world – along with Denmark and Singapore, according to Transparency International’s 2010 ‘Corruption Perception Index – shouldn’t we arguably be the most transparent?

Going back a step – where are the New Zealand ‘cost-benefit’ analyses which prove that the old ‘Rogernomic$ mantra – public is bad – private (contracting) is good’ can be substantiated by FACTS and EVIDENCE?

At last – someone – somewhere has actually done some substantial research – which proves the opposite.

That ‘contracting out’ services that were once provided ‘in-house’ is actually TWICE as expensive.

Executive Summary

Based on the current public debate regarding the salary comparisons of federal and private sector employees, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO)[1] decided to take on the task of doing what others have not—comparing total annual compensation for federal and private sector employees with federal contractor billing rates in order to determine whether the current costs of federal service contracting serves the public interest.

The current debate over pay differentials largely relies on the theory that the government pays private sector compensation rates when it outsources services.

This report proves otherwise: in fact, it shows that the government actually pays service contractors at rates far exceeding the cost of employing federal employees to perform comparable functions.
POGO’s study analyzed the total compensation paid to federal and private sector employees, and annual billing rates for contractor employees across 35 occupational classifications covering over 550 service activities.

Our findings were shocking—POGO estimates the government pays billions more annually in taxpayer dollars to hire contractors than it would to hire federal employees to perform comparable services.

Specifically, POGO’s study shows that the federal government approves service contract billing rates—deemed fair and reasonable—that pay contractors 1.83 times more than the government pays federal employees in total compensation, and more than 2 times the total compensation paid in the private sector for comparable services. ”

The implications of this both nationally and internationally are HUGE.

If NZ central government figures are comparable with those of USA Federal Government – could the current NZ $82 billion central government spend be sliced in half by $40 billion ‘CUTTING OUT THE CONTRACTORS’

I caught the Mainsail programme on CNN earlier tonight. I rarely watch CNN or TVNZ or TV3.
But this was about the recent America’s Cup.
Any New Zealander who saw the programme and did not feel a degree of pride; well, I hope your cabbages get the blight.
The Americans were very complimentary about the NZ effort. And there was none of that infantile TVNZ patriotic platitudinous pap. I loved it, but that might be because it was the only programme I have seen on CNN that did not have a dig at The Donald.
