      ETS was a price we had to pay to gain less fettered access to international markets, and there was some cause for concern at the time it was instituted.
      
      But the tide is swinging against it as more and more satellite + ARGO buoy era temperature data accumulates and icecap loss steadfastly refuses to accelerate – (groundwater abstraction in India alone adds more to the sea level than polar melt). Data now unequivocably indicates that temperature rises caused by CO2 is not going to be catastrophic. Particularly with rapid rise of Electric Vehicles and cheap PV electricity. And higher CO2 has lifted global agricultural output considerably – staving off a lot of conflict and starvation in the 3rd world.

Lucky there is plenty of diesel and coal available. If the greens had their way, there would be a lot more power cuts now. I don’t here the advocates for solar talking much.
  All those whining Flick customers will be paying through the nose – $8 a unit and $10 down south today – I bet they never realized there was a downside to market forces.

  Greens cannot ‘force’ an election. Jenny Shipley wanted to call an election in the late 1990s after falling out with Winston but the Guv refused saying he wanted to give parties a time to sort an alternative government. This Jenny did with the help of some defecting MP’s in particular Alamein Kopu. While the Greens may appear cohesive it is only because James Shaw has kept his trap shut. If the Greens (especially the ‘red’ faction) push their luck too far the party could split if there is another ‘melting pot’ situation.

  This is what Cam Slater over at Whaleoil is banging on about. He seems to be throwing his weight behind Winston to deal with his ‘pet’ issue as well as to deal to National for being ‘Labour Lite’. He has made the fundamental assumption that Winston will not get into bed with Labour/ Greens and that the Greens would never talk to National. However this would greatly reduce Winston’s bargaining power. Winston will I am sure talk turkey with the Greens if at least to put pressure on the Nats. Winston’s nightmare is the Greens holding discussions with National since it reduces his bargaining power and means he cannot take his time over things and go fishing for a few days after the election as he did in 1996.

Why should I pay the Auckland Herald to read pages from the Washington Post or the like.
If I want to read the Washington Post, Bloomberg, CNN or the New York Times I can go on line.
The Herald proves once again how desperate they are to fill the pages.
Can’t be too long before they go under following the Fairfax scams.
And they think they are still more clever that the public, shown by their circulation drops – there are still many free copies to be found to help make up the numbers – circulation is their possible readers not the actual papers produced !

Yesterday Itstricky bought to my attention a lengthy article in the Hooorald by so called “Investigative Journalist” Kirsty Johnson titled “How NZ’s growing alt-right movement plans to influence the election

I’ll save you the detail of the article but in short, a reporter creates a fake Social Media account and watches conversations of people on Facebook and Reddit and notice that they plan to create “memes” in order to highlight their cause.

She then notes “Two significant events” have occurred being Auckland University European Students formed briefly and after a witch hunt quickly disbanded, and that Winston Peters signed a picture with a cartoon frog on it (I kid you not!). She also notes the “Hobsons Pledge” and how this pledge has similarities to “Neo-Nazi” policies.

She then (rather accurately) notes that the 2 main concerns of the Alt right are the deliberate policies that are reducing Whites to rump minorities around the globe and Cultural Marxism which she describes as:

a conspiracy theory that claims Marxists infiltrated the west to destroy Christian values and replace them with feminism, multiculturalism, gay rights and atheism.

. (I would say the proof is in the pudding on this one – hardly a “conspiracy theory”!)

She then meets a Chinese student who to her shock, identifies as part of the alt-right:

Chen describes himself as fascist and an ethno-nationalist. We ask how that works, given Chen is Chinese. He gets asked this a lot.

“It means I support people’s rights in their own country. So as an ethno-nationalist [in New Zealand] I have to go out and support Europeans,” he says.

“People get confused because I’m not white. They think [alt-right] is exclusive to neo-Nazis, but it’s not.

After all the hypoventilation and faux outrage at a small group mainly confined to the internet, she never stops to think critically. For example

– Does she ever for examples think that perhaps people like Chen moved to NZ because they liked the Anglo Saxon way of life and that by bringing in vast quantities of foreigners is going to change that what makes us so desirable in the first place?

– Does she ever stop to think that what she regards as extremist (people wanting to live in a society amongst their own type) has been the nature of human existence for most of time and in all pretty much non-white countries remain that way? It is only in the last generation that we’ve seen such normal positions being labelled as “extremist”.

Oh how I would love to be able to write a riposte to Johnson’s article in the Herald. Odds of that happening…………..somewhere between Zilch and nada – can’t allow the poor readers to hear such “hate thought” in their Brave New World! 🙂

  I can just imagine the dilemma facing the Editorial staff of the NZ Herald. On the one hand they knew that any mention (no matter how negative) of the Alt-Right would provide it with a massive publicity boost. But they also had come to believe that it – we – had become too influential to ignore. How I’d love to have been a fly on the wall as the reptiles fretted over this dilemma.
  
  The fact that they chose the attack option underlines how far we’ve come. Our greatest weapon, nothing else even comes close, lies in opening the minds of a critical mass of White people to the existential attack our civilisation is undergoing. How it’s taking place, the identity of those waging the attack, why they’re waging it, and what defeat would ultimately mean for Whites. Remember the words of Sam Adams “It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people’s minds”.
  
  The pivotal issue is whether these developments are too late. Demography is destiny with the USA and several European countries now close to the tipping point. Then again as Lenin observed – and he should know – “There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.”

Also they mispronounce the superfluous add-ons. Kiwi speak ho as hou; Polynesians are very fussy about vowels and if they wanted a diphthong they would have written it. Same with ko pronounced as kou, which I heard this morning, or koe; a real accented Kiwi may extend to koi.
    
    English does not need extension with Maori: the Treaty does not require it nor is the English language or its learning enhanced.

  Oh, I don’t know, Keeping Stock. Kiwiblog’s “terms of endearment” for people they oppose are fairly robust. As well as the standard comments on their looks, weight, sexual habits, drinking habits, honesty, and intelligence, I’m guessing that you could probably find instances of someone at sometime using the idiomatic “drop dead” or similar if you looked hard enough.

    The term was supposedly coined by Richard Spencer who was one of the founders of the original Alternative Right blog (but has since left to form his own group) and it originally referred to a wide variety of people on the conservative and libertarian right who believed that mainstream conservatism had sold out, failed to conserve anything or prevent the growth of nanny state, and tended to roll over and surrender the second Liberals and their media lapdogs yelled “racism” or “bigot”. Spencer has since narrowed the term and insists that it can only refer to people and groups who believe in white nationalism/separatism, race realism, and anti-Semitism. Conservative civic nationalists who reject those ideas are called alt-lite. There is another group called Neoreaction which is often put in the alt-right tent, but that is extremely debatable. In-fighting over what the term should mean has been an ongoing issue.
    
    In a sense there has always been an “alternative right” in the West opposed to or critical of the mainstream right. In the US this centered around the Paleconservatives and people like Patrick Buchanan, and in Britain around people like Roger Scruton and Peter Hitchens.
    
    So what and who the alt-right is is not simple. There is a very wide variety of groups who are critical of the mainstream right, and tend towards varying degrees of traditionalism and/or nationalism. I do think Spencer’s version can reasonably be called refried neo-Nazism, but there are many groups who are absolutely not neo-Nazis or fascists in any way, shape, or form, and any use of the term by the msm, liberals and leftists should be treated with a great deal of suspicion.

    When I was last up in that neck of the woods (not that long ago), there was talk of the Napier/ Wairoa line being reopened in order to transport logs. They were only going to do that one or two days per week. My gut feeling is that a track from Napier to Gisborne would be well utilised. It would probably be very beneficial for tourism as well.

      It’s just not economic to keep fixing it.
      There’s talk of turning it into a cycleway.
      Rail from Napier to Wairoa is doable though and that will carry a lot of logs.

      Nookin, a rail track from Napier to Gisborne would be just like it was, rarely used and a white elephant to maintain. The tourist traffic on the route might justify 1-2 small trains a week. Not that it isn’t a pleasant route in a way, done it myself just before the line closed, but I can’t see where a lot of demand might come from. It doesn’t lead anywhere that you can continue on without a car (or a bus maybe) so tourists are most likely going to go there and back, and what’s so interesting about Gisborne that one can reach on foot that many people would want to go for ?
      
      As for freight, there’s the Fertilizer load – that’s one train a week, Logs, maybe a train or two a day at best and it’s one way traffic to Napier (Gisborne port is too shallow for fully loaded ships). Other freight, maybe a couple of containers a day of Fruit/Produce/Meat.
      
      So really, well short of an economic justification for restoring the rail line. Maybe they could make a go using it as a cycling “rail-trail”. It’s a bit hilly maybe, a goodly climb out of the Esk Valley to get up past Tutira and several other long climbs, but not steep.

      When I first arrived here (3 years ago), I was not too convinced about the economics of restoring the railway. The husband has always been for its revival.
      
      However in the last few years I have become more acquainted with some of the farming, forestry, tourism and horticulture activities around here.
      The potential for growth on the land and in this climate is as good as you can get anywhere in the world. Growers need to get their produce out to buyers…. The port is full-on every day loading logs and (in summer) squash. The roads out are diabolical (Waioeka Gorge out all week, at the moment).
      Rail makes sense…

        It really doesn’t. Loading and unloading and added transport time are big costs, and the additional loading operations that rail requires (often need a truck to bring the goods to the rail, and also a truck to take them away from the rail) make it mostly uneconomic aside from a few primary industries with concentrated points of production/use.
        
        Autonomous trucks are going to make rail even less attractive, and maintenance costs for little used rail destroy any potential for competitiveness. NZ has pumped billions into uneconomic rail over last 2 decades, when it could have made a far higher return by ripping up the rails and selling off the land.

Few stories floating around this morning about some guy who went nuts in Japan and died in the funny farm after being strapped to a bed for ten days.
However what caught my eye was this little gem from the story:
“The fact that Kelly was here … to try to help international relations, trying to teach Japanese children English, and then he’s just dying in this kind of outrageous circumstances that would never happen in New Zealand should be an embarrassment to Japan.”

So he was selflessly living in Japan just to help with international relations, not working a job and getting paid nicely to do it.
What bullshit.

    Japan runs like a precise, intricate machine, but beware of this beauty. If you stray off the social path or trip and fall, you are likely to end up in the mechanical cogs and mechanisms of Japanese society and be ripped to pieces (and make quite a mess of your surroundings in the process).

    Whoever employed him must have been out of their mind or weren’t they given the full story. People with mental conditions should not go to live in an alien culture where they have to struggle to adapt. His family should also take some responsibility.       From what I understand he was an English teacher, not an aid worker. Perhaps Odakyu-sen can help out, but I’ve heard English is not widely spoken in Japan, so it could we be quite a handy occupation.

        Although all Japanese children are taught English t school for at least 3 years, their level of competency is very low.
        With more adult Japanese studying abroad, the English language levels in major corporations is improving.
        At least there is road signage in English in Japan. English is still not widely spoken, but the Japanese are sympathetic to it.

      People are attracted to foreign countries to work, One of my grandsons has married a Japanese lady and is working in Japan as well as in NZ.
      One needs to expect and respect that there will cultural differences and practices but that does not make any anyone bad. If you settle somewhere you take what’s available. Everyone is trying to do their best as they are aware.

      In the West, people are relatively more comfortable discussing mental illness and associating with people with mental conditions.
      However, not all the world feels this way. Many times on KB, the cultural taboos of Polynesian towards psychological conditions has been brought up. Japan (like Polynesia) shares many of those attitudes.
      While you in New Zealand might feel quite nonchalant about travelling overseas with a medicated mental condition, most Japanese would be horrified at such recklessness.

I note that some UK hack has written a piece bemoaning the fact that the late Rick Parfitt of Status Quo fame has left an estate of only 230,000 pound. The writer bangs on about Parfitt living a hedonistic lifestyle and implies that Parfitt has failed in some way because of the
size of his estate.
Well as far as I am concerned Parfitt has just about timed things perfectly, why the hell would you want to die with millions in the bank? Spend it, blow it and live as hedonistic a lifestyle as you can afford then when the time comes, die with as little as possible unspent.

It continues to astonish me (although perhaps it shouldn’t) how important information about the ‘hate Trump’ movement in the US gets ignored by the MSM. Much hysteria this morning about the ‘leaked’ emails from Donald Jr relating to his meeting with ‘a Russian govt official’ before the election, and the Dems screaming that this ‘proves’ what they have been saying and Trump should be impeached immediately. I watched Hannity on Fox last night – he had a lengthy session with Trump Jr, who had voluntarily released the entire email chain, and gave an entirely credible explanation about the meeting. In essence, nothing to see – move right along.
Yet as far as I can see NO New Zealand media has reported the exchange – they persist in simply ‘reprinting’ the rubbish coming from the likes of CNN, NBC, Washington Post, etc.

Perhaps NZ journalists don’t know about Fox, or ignore that channel because it doesn’t fit their ulterior motives.

  Donald Trump Junior did take a meeting which he should not have taken. The idea that the Kremlin was backing Trump is an interesting one. For the life of me I cannot see why the Kremlin would back Donald Trump to be president over Hillary Clinton?
  
  That’s why the whole Trump/Russia thing is so unbelievable to me. Why would Russia seriously want Trump as President of the United States? Because actually Trump as president is pursuing a reasonably tough stance against Russia.
  
  The whole thing doesn’t make sense. No doubt the special prosecutor will dig over every nook and cranny for the next 2 years. And CNN will keep talking about Trump and Russia endlessly.

      That’s just crazy stuff. As could easily have been predicted and has been pointed out on this thread in office Trump has been strongly in favour of the United States and has acted decisively against Russian interests in Syria and in the field of energy.
      
      The idea that Putin would want Trump as president is just nonsensical. Given that Trump has not been in political office before how could Putin possibly be comfortable that this guy is going to be a Russian stooge? And given Trump’s history of making bold moves and given Trump’s campaign promises to put America first, it is a product of liberal fantasy that Trump is Russia’s guy.

        Putin doesn’t care the slightest if the US builds up its military or if wants to, say, go on sailing trips through the south china sea. His concern is with NATO encroachment on Russian borders, sanctions, and Russia’s status as a superpower. The fact that Trump is inexperienced, incompetent and divisive are all pluses as far as Putin is concerned since that weakens America’s position on the global stage. Putin thought that he would be able to control Trump through blackmail but is a poor strategist and didn’t realise that Trump’s Russian connections would become so public and this would remove his ability to blackmail him.

It looks like upgrading the electric power grid to be able to handle sustainable energy from wind and solar would be impractically expensive in the U.S (and probably everywhere).

Rewiring the U.S. electric grid to handle more wind and solar power won’t be cheap or easy, according to a study published Wednesday by the Alliance for Innovation and Infrastructure (AII).

The study found that the U.S. power grid can’t easily be replaced by a distributed smart grid that environmentalists favor. Efforts to update the electric grid to better handle variable energy output from wind and solar power haven’t been effective and would be expensive.

“It is probably a trillion dollar asset,” Brigham McCown, chairman of AII, told reporters during a press conference. “People for decades have talked about the need to modernize the grid and upgrade it, but quite frankly that hasn’t happened.”

“It is not gonna be cheap,” McCown added.

In order for the traditional power grid to function, demand for energy must exactly match supply. Power demand is relatively predictable and conventional power plants, like nuclear plants and natural gas, can adjust output accordingly. Solar and wind power, however, cannot easily adjust their output on demand. They also provide power unpredictably relative to conventional power sources.

On an especially cloudy or windless day, the electrical grid can’t supply enough power from solar or wind alone. Wind and solar also run the risk of producing too much power, which can overload and fry the traditional power grid. This is why electrical companies will occasionally pay consumers to take electricity.

Green energy has already caused damage to the electrical grids of Germany and California’s electrical grid, potentially leading to massive blackouts.

California was forced to shut down its solar farms last March because they were producing more electricity than the state needed. Grid operators say this damaged the power grid, and the system will be incredibly vulnerable to damage and blackouts due to the excess power.

  That’ll be why some US electricity suppliers are going balls out pressuring state legislatures to kneecap the roll out of rooftop solar while others are offering $30 a month to rent roofs to install solar panels.

I need some sympathy, I scribbled all over my face and I can’t get a job. I robbed someone at knifepoint, escaped custody assaulted someone and stole a bunch of stuff..I have NO IDEA why I can’t get a job? Seems this muppet is now proud of his “facial tattoo’s” because his mum and some randoms on Facebook said it was cool.

  Ha Ha many years ago when I worked at WINZ we had a Gangmember getting lump sum payments for Facial Tattoo removal.
  When I queried why we weren’t paying the Tattoo Removal Clinic directly I was told something like ‘We don’t want to embarrass him’ , ‘He is a man of pride and Mana’..etc etc

I fluked watching a great programme on Al Jazeera.
It was about New Zealand’ serious suicide statistics.
Mike King spoke very well. So did Labour’s David Clark. Tell Julie Anne Genter that she is member of the New Zealand parliament. It is as if she is seeking koha by prefixing the country’s name with aotearoa. Julie Anne; it is Al Jazeera; you might get Doha, but no koha.
Al Jazeera’s reputation with me has escalated. They did a great job. And none of that More NZ On Air excrement at the end of the programme.
If I was enjoying good health rather than suffering an awful cold, I would have missed the show, as Thursday nights is the night for drinking ale and talking crap.

– when I dropped my political ‘bombshell’ about NZ’s corruption REALITY being that
in my opinion, as a proven anti- corruption ‘whistle-blower’ – New Zealand was a ‘corrupt, polluted tax haven – a banana republic without the bananas’.

I also stated that the Transparency International ‘Corruption Perception Index’ (which NZ topped 10 times (sometimes 1st equal) without having even ratified the UN Convention Against Corruption – should be screwed up and thrown into the rubbish bin of history.

That there were IMO, objective, significant milestones / yardsticks for quantifying corruption REALITY, rather than relying (largely) upon the subjective opinions of anonymous businesspeople for PERCEPTION of corruption (which in my view is a meaningless ‘measure’).

I pointed out how in 2010 how I had attended the Transparency International Anti-Corruption Conference in Bangkok.

Where we were told that the global procurement market was $14 TRILLION and the amount estimated to be lost in bribery and corruption was $2.5 TRILLION!

That I had a HUGE ‘lightbulb’ moment!

Wouldn’t $2.5 TRILLION
$2.5 THOUSAND BILLION
$2,500,000,000,000 – help to feed, clothe, water and shelter a few poor people?

That another ‘lightbulb’ moment – was that Transparency International were not looking at the underpinning private procurement MODEL, but the private procurement PROCESS.

That as soon as you got into the private procurement (contracting out) of public services, formerly provided ‘in house’ by staff directly employed under the ‘public service’ model, you got into CONTRACT MANAGEMENT.

Government or Council staff were regarded as ‘too dumb’ to do contract management – so a ‘bureaucrat'(s) would then hire CONSULTANT(S) to ‘project manage’ the WORKS CONTRACTOR(S), who would then usually SUB-CONTRACT- so by the time you got down to those in the boots and overalls getting their hands dirty and actually doing something productive – you might have up to 4 layers of pinstripe suits – clipping the ticket while effectively doing nothing.

How on EARTH is that a more ‘cost-effective’ use of public money?

In 2010, at that Transparency International Anti-Corruption Conference, I stood on my hind legs and asked a (high-faluting) panel – where was the EVIDENCE that the private procurement of public services that used to be provided at central and local government level, was more ‘cost-effective’ than former ‘in-house’ service provision?

(It was like I had slapped the face of the person who was chairing the panel.
He literally did a ‘double-take’ and mumbled that there was evidence – but none was ever provided.)

My point to this 2017 World Justice Forum group – was that in my opinion, it was time to look at the whole underpinning private procurement MODEL for public services.

( IMO – it is the privatisation -private procurement – of public services which is the major source of GRAND corruption.

I am one of the few people in the world actually saying this- that the root cause of most GRAND corruption- is PRIVATISATION.

How is it decided who GETS the contracts?

Remember – back in 2010 – the global amount estimated to be paid in bribery and corruption was $2.5 TRILLION!

The whole Neo-liberal myth and mantra ‘public is bad – private is good’ upon which this massive privatisation of public services, locally, nationally and internationally was based – was NOT ‘evidence based’.

The BIG business globalists – just MADE IT UP!
