This would give Winston a stark choice. Support National or force Nation to accept more separatist polices from the Maori Party.

  This is Winston’s second worst nightmare. His worst nightmare is when the leading parties do not even bother to negotiate with him. The only time he was complete ‘kingmaker’ was in 1996. At the subsequent times he was involved in a government, Helen Clark had two support parties either of which was sufficient.

  Thats right Colville [10.06 ] NZF policy is to prefer the highest polling for negotiations.
  Lab/Gr steady at 39.5% in this and the Colmar poll last month.
  A lower undecided at 6% here as compared to 12% in Colmar has not lifted NZF at 9%.
  I thought half of the undecideds should be ours [ NZF] Mind you these polls only 1000 people . I give Nats 45% likely.

  What sort of party is TOP anyway? Are they expecting to get %5 or win a seat? If they did get into parliament who would they go into coalition with? Did even 1/817 choose TOP?

Crackpot greens on 14%. One good push by them and a series of fuckups by Labo and the crackpots overtake Labo

It is 2017 are Labo relevant anymore? Union jobs are being replaced by machines. Union violence and Labo class hatred is so badly dated. No where to turn.

The sad thing is if Labour were even half way competant National could be putunder sustained pressue.

  If I recall correctly the showerheads/water pressure/eco lightbulbs issue emanated from the Labour government, the rare beef stupidity has come from a self-important bureaucrat (probably votes for Labour) within MPI. It certainly does not have Nathan Guy’s fingerprints on it. There’s a difference.

    You make a weak defence of a Minister who should have control and oversight of his department.
    
    National supposed to be more small business friendly, but regulating the internal temperature of a burger suggests not.
    
    Chefs are trained people, and kitchens already inspected premises. Additional rules on how things are to be cooked is big time nanny state behaviour.

    Sorry to disagree, but this is the kind of over-the-top, petty regulation that has bedeviled the National Government’s last few years.
    
    Further examples are evident in suffocating workplace safety regulations. Increasingly, these absolve employees of common-sense self-responsibility for their own safety, while adding layers of additional (and what should be unnecessary) cost on employers. It is the latter who are the investment risk-takers and the job-creators.
    
    It is for Ministers to control excesses and the pettiness displayed by their Departments. I would hope that a quiet word from Guy to his departmental boss – not a formal instruction – would be enough to have this particular nonsense remedied. And to act as a request / warning not to spring damaging political surprises of this sort on the Government.

      I think this is the point though, it is not just a silly one-off rule that has been created and can be wound back with a phone call.
      It is an entire policy that is being rolled out nationwide to the restaurant industry.
      
      If the Minister is not responsible for that, what does he do all day?

      The workplace safety one is a good point. The rules become so ownerous on employers that little wonder workers will get replaced with robots in lots of industry.
      If you have to treat your human workers like unthinking drones, little wonder the employer may as well cut out the middle man and get something that can be directly programmed!

      Nats came to power in 2008 with the promise of data driven governance. That means they should look for the holes in bureaucratic logic and push back.
      
      Nats have lost that. Nowhere has this shown in health and safety where National just roll over and take whatever recommendations they get from the bureaucrats.
      
      A classic case are the new regulations around the use of scaffolding for any work on roofing and two story buildings. While at first blush they might make it a bit safer to work on a reef, in really drives up prices so more under-skilled DIYers give it a go without the skills and equipment: hence more injuries.

I will be interesting at the next poll to see whether the media’s obsession with Bill English will show any further manifestation of the Labour Slave Labour scheme.
The media have gone very quiet over Labour as it appears that somebody (KDC?) has paid the anticipated $280,000 to take the scheme effectively away from the Labour Party Election costs.
Still tax and costs in Employment Law – but that will disappear.
Now Labour and the complicit media can concentrate on denigrating English and the silly boy from Southland, and the complicit with the ……….woman and her friends who set this whole thing up even before he was nominated.
This group which goes very high in the National Party did not get the person they wanted so get the boy. There is much more to this than in the open – see WO who knows the involvement at an early stage.
So instead of helping the boy these people went out their way to tear him to pieces publically and privately.
In taping them slagging him off he needed to be more subtle and somebody in the Party should have mentored him.
He was foolish to have admitted it and English was complicit – it will hurt English – gone by April as the National’s results will be very bad. The media and Winston will see to it.

To be old and wide you have to have been young and foolish – I know.

  I disagree Paulus. Both incidents (Barclay and Labour’s ‘volunteers’) might be of abiding interest to political tragics like you and me but they are beltway issues. The vast majority of the public couldn’t give a toss particularly during a week in the middle of a Lions test series and when the Americas Cup will be won or lost. Victories in either or preferably both of those comps will see the country swept away in a tide of nationalistic fervour.

The 2017 election might have one matter that was seen in 1981.
In 1981 many thousands of National voters, in safe National seats, voted Social Credit. They could not bring themselves to vote for a shiver looking for a spine to run up. But they disliked The Pig. So they voted for “funny money”.
Similarly, in 2017 I think many thousands of National voters will give their candidate vote to NZ First, just to remind Bill English that Nathan Guy is silly, as is Woodhouse in Immigration, Nick Smith is an aberration just like Todd Barclay, and if we are going to get a Labour party Budget, why not have a Labour politician deliver it.

Don’t get too excited with Rogue Morgan poll. Next poll will show a 5 point drop to National and a 3 point increase to Chicken Little and a 2 point increase to the toxic Greens. Waste of time following this poll.

    “NZ First Leader and MP for Northland Winston Peters says there is no shortage of demand for rail in Northland.
    
    “But no-one is going to be putting their cargo on a train going five kilometres an hour countless times on the way to Auckland.”
    
    Peters has been vocal about the future of rail in Northland and told those in attendance the topography of Northland and the damage already done to the roads makes the case for rail in the region.
    
    Peters says the Government committed $1.25 billion towards a $2.5 billion Supercity road upgrade which covers 3.4km.
    
    “For $220 million, 270km of track in Northland could be updated, lifting both speed and height restrictions so that high cube containers can be carried. That sum would fund a brand new line into Northport.”
    
    Northland businessman Wayne Brown also spoke at the event, expressing his desire to use rail to transport products from the dairy factory he is building in Kerikeri to an appropriate port.
    
    Winstone was an outstanding minister of racing, he is a solutions guy. ”
