CNN journalism is so dishonest and their editors so useless that they now can’t post stories without being verified by CNN management. Basically this says the journalists and editors can’t be trusted

Remember this is the network that arranged for Hillary to have the Presidential debate questions in advance via Donna Brazille (who was rewarded for dishonesty be being given the DNC Chair after her predecessor had been found out for being too dishonest by rorting the nomination for Hillary).

The MSM are the Opposition and CNN are the leaders of the opposition. They are off the reservation.

      No one is ignoring the other information, Ross.
      
      Just keeping it in perspective in relation to the almost hysterical “reporting” by Breitbart and the pronouncements by Different Perspective that CNN is useless and can’t be trusted while using the far less trustworthy Breitbart who can’t even keep their own stories straight.
      
      This is the 3rd day in a row, since I’ve been keeping track, that Different Perspective has posted about this story.

        What I’m saying is CNN is far more reliable than Breitbart. When CNN makes a mistake, they own up to it and work to make sure it doesn’t happen again. When Breitbart makes a mistake, they ignore their mistake and hope that no one notices, and failing that just let the mistake vanish off their front page and fixate on an actual news agency’s mistake instead.

    The interesting thing about Breitbart is not just the stories they push it’s the stories they don’t push. I quite often search for stories on Breitbart that don’t fit their narrative, like when an Indian born engineer was killed in Kansas by a white man shouting “go back to your home country”. These stories are never on the front page, difficult to find (I end up using google’s site search), generally AP reposts and have very little to no comments – if people are relying just on Breitbart for their news they are getting a very skewed view of the world.

      Case and point the MSN in NZ running the stories about Barcley and the Labour party interns.
      You struggled to find anything about the Labour party cock up but Barcley was front page for 3 days. They both should have had equal weight in an election year so voters are reasonably informed that both parties cannot be trusted.
      
      Basically they are all full of S%^* and everything you read should be taken with a grain of salt and a healthy dash of skepticism. All news and media outlets push their own agenda these days.

    Brietbart is a right of centre news outlet. It’s always had a particular perspective and one that’s sorely needed as the mainstream media is so biased.
    However CNN is supposed to be a straight news network. It’s supposed to be straight news reporting and then it does have hosts who are opinion people like Don Lemon.
    
    What it’s not supposed to be is an uncritical cheerleader for president Obama.
    What it’s not supposed to do is supply debate questions in advance to Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
    What it’s not suppose to do is become a 24/7 basher of newly elected president Donald J Trump.
    Media analysis shows that CNN devotes 90% of its time to negative stories about Trump.
    It’s utterly biased and has lost the confidence of anyone who is not a Democrat partisan.

      Breitbart is barely a news outlet, when it only covers news that fits its narrative it becomes more a blog of like minded individuals.
      
      It’s interesting to look who runs and owns Breitbart, it gives you an idea how they are using it to influence people to their benefit – they had their hands in Brexit too (possible collusion between the two leave campaigns against UK law, services donated against campaign finance laws.)

      I would agree that journalist are inclined to be Liberal.
      Go’s with reality having a Liberal bias.
      You see the same effect in academia.
      It was called the enlightenment for a reason.
      
      It is better to access a range of sources rather than only access echochambers.
      A wide view gives you enough information to create informed opinions .
      Sites like Breitbart or the Daily Mail have a poor record with the truth so their content must be taken with caution or confirmed from a less biased source.

    Well, we know that the White House was hacked by the Russians in 2014 and Obama did nothing about it. It didn’t seem to matter until Donald Trump became president. After that, Russia became the No. 1 enemy (and this despite Hillary’s infamous “reset”, and Obama’s “more flexibility” comment to Medvedev. Things were fine with Russia then).
    
    Whether the Russians did or did not try to somehow “hack” the election (whatever that means), I don’t think it had anything to do with any collusion with Trump. Oh, and Obama is not above trying to influence elections. Remember how he sent a five man PR team over to Israel to help defeat Netanyahu in their last elections. Apparently, that wasn’t illegal.
    
    To me, it just looks like Trump is ‘playing the game’. If Obama can blame Bush for everything wrong, Trump can do the same to Obama 😛
    
    Brietbart does have their place. Do you think CNN would have retracted their false story if a group like Breitbart hadn’t been around?
    I doubt it. Whether breitbart can be considered a 100% accurate news source is debatable, but the number of times they’ve debunked the mainstream media narrative with actual facts makes them worth reading before taking something at face value.

      CNN have been caught so many times now it must be clear to Management that the Brand is badly damaged.
      You have to gaze in awe at the hypocrisy of the nutter Lucia criticising others for fake news given the rubbish and innuendo she has peddled ( from CNN too) as she DESPERATELY tries to draw links of Trump colluding with Russia- something now widely acknowledged as not having occurred. Even the guy Trump sacked (Comey) confirms Trump is not being investigated.

      Breitbart makes no bones about what side it’s on and undoubtedly Bannon still guides them.They tend to target news the MSM won’t cover and that’s their niche.
      Mind you Jeff Bezos owns Wapo and their bias is apparent- probably due to Trump stating Amazon is too big, probably breaks monopoly rules and should be broken up.
      Then there’s the NYT. Biggest shareholder Carlos Slim who’s wealth has been decreased by 16 Billion because Trump wants to renegotiate NAFTA. No surprise they are against Trump.
      As for Fox, Murdochs boys seem more Liberally aligned than Rupert but the reality of profit might change their current level of interference. At least Fox allows a contest of ideas and views among contributors (Hannity excepted perhaps!!!) where the rest are just echo chambers of Bob agreeing with Mary who agrees with Ann who agrees with Andrew.
      News outlets have always been playthings for the rich to control their message.

next installment on Labour’s coverup of what really happened with their intern scheme.

Despite Andrew Little claiming the intern scheme was “not a Labour thing” and he didn’t have anything to do with it until last Monday, he, Jacinda Ardern, other Labour MPs and candidates were at a party event with the interns the week before.

And it’s clear that the interns were working with a number of Labour candidates in Auckland electorates.

I don’t think Little has been straight on Labour’s involvement in the fellowship/intern scheme, with his own knowledge of the scheme, and what went wrong that led to McCarten’s sudden departure from his Labour job and sudden intervention by the Labour leadership and head office even though Little, MPs and candidates were involved with the interns and they were clearly involved with the Labour Party in far more ways than using the name.

Mean while fast forward from Americas Cup San Fran in 2013 where TNZ led 8-1 when Jimmy Spithall came back to put the boot into TNZ especially Grant Dalton . This time TNZ won 8-I and watching the redemption of Jimmy Spithall, who looked like he was “supping sorrow with the spoon of grief”.What a beating he has taken this time,talk about pride, as in 2013 and a fall in 2017.

      The implication in your comment clearly is that “Labour types,” anyone I assume who points out things might not be so brilliant in the country, e.g. like housing, like ‘poverty’, like youth suicide, like Auckland transport, think that the country is going to hell in a hand basket. I think Winston is ‘chasing cars’ in pursuing the Fuji-Xerox debacle. It is extremely unlikely Kiwis will lose money. While the Government, universities etc have many copying/ printing machines on lease, the machines operate reliably and even if support suddenly stopped meaning a fresh contract had to be let, any loss (rental etc) due to machines breaking etc would be minimal. Indeed any receiver or liquidator would aim to keep the fleet operating.
This leaves Winston’s claim that this would affect NZ’s reputation as a place to do business. However the losses are really a private matter between the NZ branch and Head Office, there seems no need for SFO or police to get involved unless asked asked by the company or anyone actually out of pocket.
Hope Winston finds plenty more cars to chase especially the 50 Mercedes Benz cars he claimed a government department purchased some years ago.

He calls Bill English a retard, asks for his head to roll and talks of BE’s ‘spiteful vendetta’. Either WO is a nasty person or seriously unwell. It seems he is hell bent on damaging National’s chance of success this election.

    But like Hillary blaming the Russians for leaking the horrible stuff that was in her campaign team’s emails, what’s coming out is the truth and no one but Bill is responsible for what Bill does! His bed, he made it, he’s lying in it now.
    
    Bill is not good PM material, that’s what we’re seeing now, he was useless as leader in 2002 and the leopard hasn’t changed it’s spots.
    
    So blame WO (or Trump or the Russians) if you like, but this is all Bill’s doing.

    That’s so naive. The sea anchor of MMP means it’s almost impossible to govern alone. National enjoyed the biggest win in several generations in 2014 and they were made all but a lame duck government courtesy of their cuck support partners. In an FPP or electoral college environment – your comment makes sense – in MMP it’s utter fantasy.
    
    National are becoming the DNC and it’s really, really bad for NZ. If they don’t course correct we’ll have a swamp like Washington and look what that has bred!

  WO has never liked Bill English as far as I can see. This goes back to the early 2000’s when Michelle Boag defeated John Slater (Cam’s dad) to be party president. Michelle and Bill copped the blame (unfairly IMO) for the 2002 disastrous defeat. IMO the Bolger/ Birch era in the 1990’s with over the top Rogernomic ideas about privatising roads and streets was the major cause for National falling on hard times in the early 2000’s. They had forgotten that the overarching objective of a political party is to get into power and if in power to stay in power. This left Michelle and Bill with an almost hopeless situation heading into the 2002 election.
  I think Cam’s wish is for a Winston/ National coalition with the principal aim of curbing Muslim immigration with possibly a secondary benefit that Winston will make the dumping of Bill English a pre-requisite of a Winston/ National coalition.
  I nearly succumbed on a couple of occasions to Spanish Bride’s appeals to take up a WO subscription but have not – I am glad now. Part the reason for this was Cam once called me a word that Pete Belt (Cam’s chief geek and moderator) quite rightfully would not allow anyone else to use.

    For the life of me I cannot see how anyone claiming to be to the right politically can see a useful contribution to New Zealand’s governance by Winston Peters and his collection New Zealand First colleagues.
    
    I no longer visit WOBF so maybe someone can tell me does he still claim that NZF will never go into a coalition arrangement involving the Greens?
    
    I realised he had no special insight into NZ Politics when he kept insisting that National was the only possible coalition partner for NZF. I then quickly concluded he was not worth even reading when he went back on years of rubbishing Peter’s to apparently see him as the way forward as part of a 2017 coalition, for whatever reason.

      I was a bit more charitable and thought he would talk turkey with Labour/ Greens to enhance his bargaining position with National, but would prefer to run with National if possible.
      I suspect Winston and WO are hoping that National lose ground so Winston is the only potential coalition partner (this last happened in 1996).

Perhaps the two women confided in each other. Perhaps Ria who, without Winston Peters would be a hairdresser in Invercargill, passed on some snippets to her boss. Perhaps Winston made sure the media were fed the story. Perhaps he timed it so it led into the National Party Conference.
Perhaps I just have an over-active imagination.

A question for the IT experts.
I’ve recently taken up Spark’s offer of a wireless modem ( which uses their G4 network). They said the speeds would be faster but I’m getting the same at best ( I was just on the old copper network) and in some cases the download speed of some sites are a lot slower. I use a desk top most of the time.
Have I been “conned” or is there something I should do in terms of “adjustment”

    It is in Spark’s interests to grow wireless internet at the expense of landline internet. It avoids Spark having to split the revenue with Chorus and also reduces crummy copper landline issues (one of Spark’s selling points). Spark can accelerate development of its cellular network. In due course when there is high fibre penetration and when the cellular network starts to saturate Spark will give these an incentive to move to fibre.

  Wireless is affected by so many things: even the neighbours microwave. Also they’re a shared resource so performance can be irregular. That’s all apart from the site you want to connect to which can be routed around the world, The time of day is significant too and the weather. Usage is highest early evening and wet Sunday afternoons.
  
  Spark can offer but can’t guarantee anything but a connection.

I wonder what fact-checking Mr Murphy, former editor of the Herald, did before making that claim. The Government gave TNZ $36m after San Francisco to clear its debts, and to retain key personnel. At the time it was made clear to them that was all they were getting, and they would have to stand on their own two hulls.

To Dalton and co’s credit, they found the money to compete in Bermuda, even after the Government rightly turned them down for more money last year. They did subsequently get a Callaghan Innovation grant giving taxpayer funding of 20 per cent of their R&D spend, up to a maximum of $5m for three years.

There were plenty of people from right across the political spectrum slagging the Government off for giving them any money at all. With the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, the investment was a good one, and will be repaid many times over when the defence of the cup takes place. With the company tax, GST and PAYE paid by boatbuilders in NZ producing America’s Cup boats, that initial $36m may have already been repaid.

So to imply that the Government has not supported ETNZ is simply false. Perhaps Mr Murphy is just pissed that his story from last week will be relegated to lower down in the pecking order.

  I heard someone on the radio the other day who worked on stuff for more than one of the boats in the just completed regatta.
  He said that people like him were better off if the Cup remained in foreign hands because they are now not permitted by the rules to work on challengers’ boats.

NZ First promise to wipe student loans, and they claim it will ‘only’ cost $4.6B a year (ie will actually cost more, but who’s counting).

The detail becomes hilarious, from Tracey Martin, who seems to change her mind halfway through explaining it…
“The policy would only apply to new students. If a student left the country within their repayment period and did not find a overseas worker to replace them then they would be hit with the remaining years of their loan. Like current overseas based borrowers this would be with interest, but it would also be the full tuition fee, not a subsidised one. Whatever you’ve got left will be turned into a financial debt – actually more. It will be the full fee,” New Zealand First education spokesperson Tracey Martin said.

So a student going overseas has to find a replacement to work in NZ, or pay the full cost of their study, which is around 80% subsidised at the moment.
Imagine the overhead of keeping tabs on all the students – but no, apparently..
“Martin was adamant that various savings – including in student loan administration costs and by moving academic research funding into the science budget – would make the fiscal hit negligible. ”

Seriously, this is nuts. What about the students who have worked hard to repay their loans over the last 25 years ? Tough. Now pay your increased taxes so these guys can compete for your practices and jobs.

Labour, of cost, are on board…
“(Martin) said it was more likely that she could negotiate the scheme in a coalition government with Labour, as the National Party and ACT would likely be philosophically opposed. Labour agreed – broadly.
“If we’re in a position to negotiate with other parties, then obviously more funding for education is something that we are going to be happy to talk about,” Hipkins said.

Dirty Politics inside the National Party

The Barclay scandal also helps illustrate some of the internal National Party machinations and in-fighting that the public wouldn’t normally be aware of. After all, at the centre of this scandal was a war going on between, not just one MP and one staff member, but also between wider factions, officials and agendas.

The most interesting new aspect in this regard is revealed in Melanie Reid’s latest must-read Newsroom article, Barclay affair: What the board knew. This deals with some of the attempts that were made within the local Clutha-Southland National Party branch to get Barclay de-selected, and also some of the involvement of the National Party’s president and board members.

Apparently, prior to Barclay’s reselection as the National candidate in December last year, local activists made the party president and board aware of why they regarded the MP an inappropriate representative. According to Reid, “The National Party President Peter Goodfellow and its board allowed Todd Barclay to be selected as a candidate for the upcoming election despite knowing he was clearly unsuitable to be an MP.” She says that “In total, the board received at least nine letters outlining Barclay’s unsuitability as an MP.” … read more via hyperlink above …

        Re re-opening of police investigations. I suspect they are doing it to appear non-partisan. If Todd declines to sing (as is his right) they are up the creek without a paddle. Same as Ambrose, but it seems some people think the police should soft-pedal in some cases and go full-on in other cases.
        McCready will hit the same problem if he tries a private prosecution. I suspect District Court judges will be much more careful with ‘approving’ any prosecution from him.

      I’m trying to find a cause. I see incompetence, probable deceit, inability to control, lack of judgement, misplaced trust and proven unsuitability to govern.
      
      There may be an issue with the use of Parliamentary funds. The Controller and Auditor General has already been informed.
      
      Visa matters would be at the individual level even if the “Fellows” had assistance obtaining them.
      
      There are differing opinions about accommodation suitability and it is hard to find criminality there.
      
      A possibly exists that there are undisclosed donations that may be require to be revealed but there is no breach until proven and the requisite filing time has expired.
      
      I am suspicious that the PAYE of union workers may have been used again as a “free” source of funding. That tricks very popular. IRD can’t tell us so we need to be watchful.

  Not if Todd continues to take the Fifth. Prosecutor would need to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Todd intended to have the recorder on. Bit difficult if Todd does not talk. Same thing that saved Ambrose’s bacon.
  Reasonable move for Police to check the file and ask Todd again if he will ‘help with enquiries’. Getting search warrants for information would not be too helpful either since possession of the contents of the recording does not prove intent (same as Ambrose situation). They cannot be accused of lack of partiality.

  Interns would have booked return tickets at their (or their rellies’ cost) and so if returning early have to be re-booked at additional cost. Seems Labour is bankrolling this to get them out the country early. Perhaps Labour will come under pressure to refund their fares completely, including those about to travel and then told not to come.

    cha, we’re talking about two different things entirely. What is probable is that Russia tried to influence the election. There may have been hacking, or an attempt at hacking – we don’t know. In 7 months we’ve seen no proof. CNN was trying to push a story of collusion of Trump with Russia (or in this case, Jared Kushner’s lawyer colluding). That story has been debunked – CNN had to take it down and it resulted in the firing of three CNN reporters. That’s an entirely different thing to what Trump is tweeting now about Obama.
    
    btw, countries trying to influence each others elections is nothing new. Been going on for years.
    
    There is far more proof of Hillary Clinton’s colluding with Russians.
