I actually cannot get my head around the assumption that the Eminem ripoff ‘would be fine.’ Honestly. Lambs to the slaughter.

There is no way I would take the assurances of any third party in a case like that. Why would you even go there? What did National’s profile have to gain from a sound-alike such as ‘Eminemesque’ anyway? Were they trying to be ‘edgy’? Where was the caution?

From my experience, once you get into a legal debate about something that is essentially subjective, (and the legal die was clearly cast on the day the track was purchased) the only winners are going to be the lawyers – and the guy with the bigger chequebook – which would be Eminem and his U.S. representatives.

Advisers to political parties seen as being to the ‘right’ of the political spectrum have to understand that the entire music industry, here and abroad, and at least 60% of the local media industry wants them destroyed. It’s that simple.

    They’re not stupid. Perhaps you’ve never heard it before but, as fernglas identified a couple of days back, they were obviously trying to cash in on the feel good inspirational message contained therewithin. Particularly the first verse, that goes over the top of that riff. I mean “you only get one shot”? Does that not scream “you only get one vote”? That’s not a coincidence, nor a mistake.

        No idea what you are taking about.
        
        It was a deliberate choice of song to invoke a particular feeling to get someone to go and vote National. Read the first few lines of the lyrics and remember half the population know those words, and can,at least some what, invoke them when they hear that particular riff. “You only get one shot”? Well, yes, I only get one vote. I’d better make it count.
        
        Advertisers don’t just go “what random sample shall we use today, chaps?” when dreaming up a selling ad. It would be silly to presume that the National ad creation process did.
        
        I doubt they will pull a “it was a mistake, sir” line in the court case.

    The Nat party would have had their advertising agents/campaign team handling the whole business. The procurement of music would have been done through accredited agents. MP’s as such would hardly have been involved: this is HO party stuff.
    
    I smell the leftist rats gathering and suspect that we are being set up for a dirty political season with some imported assistance. I an sensing a new sharpness that was not there before. We cannot afford politicians long on PR and short upstairs. Anyone elected or selected needs to pass the basic test that they have the ability to be able to act as a Cabinet Minister and not a just a self selected pretty ideas stylist.

  Yes, that was a problem. No risk should have been taken full stop. Arguing after the horse has bolted is not a good look. Vicarious liability will be the argument here but I still don’t think it would have been properly set out to National if at all, which hopefully will favour them.   I doubt that the US music industry cares that much about a centre-right (left by US standards) party in lil’ ol’ NZ.
  My first guess is that this is standard operating procedure when it looks like someone might have stepped on your copyright. Even if there isn’t much money to gained (it’s not a though they can demand a share of the profits) and they may well lose, it sends a clear “don’t mess with us” to others in advertising industry. You want to use something derivative of our copyright, pay up front.

  I hope the current Minister of Finance, who was formerly in the music industry wasn’t compliant with this situation. If anyone knew the potential difficulties it should have been him, but I agree running Government is not sweating over every election strategy – accepting he was the strategist.

  I’d opine that one might. After all, I would expect that if found guilty of copyright infringement, the National party will have a cast iron case to recover any costs against the company that ostensibly sold them the music. Commercially they should be protected, politically, well, who really cares what Eminem thinks, but it might smart a little. Not much with their constituency though.
  
  Having listened only briefly (I had to force myself) to both and to other non-copyrighted comparisons, I’d say that this is a nonsense case. But then, what do i know about music copyright. Led Zeppelin got away with a closer similarity IMHO, while that Aussi case with “I come from the land down under…” the similarity was striking – being essentially note perfect for an extended riff.

  It is pretty fucked up really. Petrol prices are only about 20 cents per litre below record highs despite low oil prices. I understand the reasons for that but Waitakere Man will just see it as fucked up, especially if he has recently done any driving in Australia.

There are literally thousands of tunes available on scores of platforms, composed by musicians that do it purely for the cash, that sound like nothing and everything.

National chose a piece of music that sounded just like a very popular musician who is unlikely to be aligned with conservative principles (mind you neither is National).

They chose poorly. It was an absurdly poor decision.

Does anybody think they’ll do this again? This proves my point.

  The thing is there are thousands of “sound alike” songs produced for just this type of thing. Agencies produce and sell them because they sound similar but just enough different to avoid this sort of prosecution. I don’t see where National did anything wrong.

Mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah was left in hysterics after stopping him to say: “I’m sorry to hear you’re standing down”, to which the Duke replied: “Well I can’t stand up much longer”.

I guess that after 70 years of marriage to the Queen, and 64 years of walking in her shadow, the DoE is entitled to retire on his own terms.

Whilst we mainly hear about his gaffes, of which there have been a fair few, he has devoted his life quite literally to Queen and Country. At 95, he’s probably not going to have a long retirement, and this particular subject wishes him well.

  Trumpeters may revile the second part of your statement even if it is true, but it doesn’t make the first part true at all. Obama was a disappointment really and it is highly unlikely that he will be remembered for constructive achievement. Once the dust clears, “Slick Willy” Clinton will be judged a great president – an entire 8 years of uninterrupted economic growth, matched by er no one in modern times – and Obama not much.
  
  Indeed, Obama’s use and abuse of “executive orders” and similar unilateral dodges have given the present dude a licence to ape. Some of these were so transparently bogus and doomed to fail in court, it did not give his regime the aroma of principle his admirers would like to detect. I stuffed perfumed gauze up my nostrils when reading about them. It had to be!
  
  It is very unfortunate that the entertainment value of the new president has been acquired at the risk of thermonuclear war and less catastrophic but nonetheless dire consequences, but that doesn’t make his predecessor charming by default.

Mr Multiculturism, Massey’s Paul Spoonley, is pulling out all stops on his bullshit organ, as he thunders out support for keeping open the immigration flood into NZ.

Who is Spoonley?

Stuff, in reporting more of Spoonley’s “keep the doors open” message, describes Spoonley as a distinguished professor, and also as an immigration expert. The NZ media in the past have called him a diversity expert.

Spoonley’s a sociologist. Massey labels him a “distinguished professor,” which is the highest of the titles Massey bestows on its staff. This once internationally great agriculture establishment a helped the country to become a viable exporting economy. Now it’s something else.

Spoonley is Massey’s “pro vice-chancellor – College of Humanities and Social Sciences.”

“Pro vice chancellor” is university speak for an assistant or deputy academic chief of a university. The “college of humanities and social sciences” in the past likely would have been called a faculty.

Spoonley has admitted he left high school “with a first report that said ‘not suitable university material’.”

Here’s an inkling of Spoonley’s philosophy, from an interview with Stuff last July:

“In ways that were hard to predict, we have become not just diverse, but “superdiverse”. Nice word but what it does mean?

“Superdiversity is a term coined by a friend of mine, Steve Vertovec, who is a director at the Max Planck Institute in Germany, to signal countries and especially cities that exceeded a threshold of 25 per cent of a population from minority, ethnic and immigrant communities.”

[The full title of the German institute Spoonley refers to is: the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity. Spoonley is a senior visiting fellow at the institute. Could Spoonley’s views on multiculturism have similar origins to Frau Merkel’s? ]

Philip Matthews, a reporter for Fairfucked NZ (and former a writer for the Listener), who interviewed Spoonley then, wrote:

… we should be having a proper, grown-up discussion about immigration levels and diversity.

So Matthews wasn’t asking Spoonley any hard questions.

Why proven ‘anti-corruption / anti-privatisation campaigner Penny Bright, is going to stand as an Independent candidate in the Tamaki electorate, in the 2017 General election:

After recently spending approximately 2 weeks of my (unpaid) time, physically checking 118 of 119 streets covered by the ‘Tamaki Regeneration’ project, (2,696 addresses of 2,704 provided by Tamaki Regeneration Ltd – the owner of these former Housing NZ Tamaki properties) – I discovered the following:

76 bare sections – grass surrounded by high
wire-netting fences.

70 apparently empty/ unoccupied former HNZ State houses.

(While people in Auckland are rough sleeping on the streets, families crammed in cars, caravans and garages.)

In my considered opinion, the Tamaki ‘Regeneration’ model, is a SCAM and effectively a State-sponsored GENTRIFICATION land-grab for private property developer$ and the wealthy ‘high end’ private home-owners.

Which is why I am going to stand as an Independent candidate in the Tamaki electorate – to help expose what in my considered opinion, has been a rort and fraud that has effectively been perpetrated on most MPs, Auckland Councillors, former Tamaki State housing tenants, and the public.

2,800 Tamaki Housing NZ properties were supposed to have been transferred on 31 March 2016 to Tamaki Redevelopment Company Ltd, (59% owned by the Crown and 41% owned by Auckland Council).

This never happened.

Tamaki Redevelopment Company Ltd did not and does not own ONE former Housing NZ property.

2,704 former Housing NZ properties were transferred to a different company – Tamaki Regeneration Ltd, which is 100% owned by the Crown.

Check the NZ Companies Office for yourself….

Where exactly did 2,800 former Tamaki ‘State houses’ go?

Who exactly is benefitting from what, in my opinion, is the Tamaki gentrification LAND GRAB?

I am asking some very hard questions, in order to be able to ‘follow the money’ and will keep you informed…

    The suburbs of Glen Innes, Panmure, Pt England were all once dormitory worker suburbs housing employee’s who worked in the medium to heavy industries that were located nearby in Panmure Ellerslie and Mt Wellington.
    The majority of those industries such as the car assembly plants all disappeared following the reforms of the ’80’s.
    The area south of the St Johns ridge down into the Panmure Basin was comprised of mainly state houses went into decline.
    The state houses became tatty and covered in graffiti with abandoned cars on the front lawns.Older residents moved out and benefit dependent families moved in.Gangs flourished with G.I being hometurf for the Head Hunters, King Cobra’s and Storm Troopers which were all ethnic gangs making a living selling drugs and doing crime. This part of East Auckland deterioated into an urban slum.
    Both the Auckland Council and Government agencies have over a period of years invested heavily into East Auckland with the view of stimulating urban renewal, rescuing this part of Auckland from decaying into a slum and a refuge of last resort.
    Elsewhere in Auckland, such as the inner central suburbs of Ponsonby, Herne Bay, Kingsland, urban renewal has breathed new life and optimism.

Mike Field, Radio NZ’s Pacific correspondent, suggested in his weekly commentary today that former Foreign Minister McCulley may have created another fiasco on the scale of the Saudi Arabia sheep deal.

This time it concerns NZ financing an international-standard airport in the Solomons. It’s based on a runway the Japanese used in World War 2.

The reference to the air strip is towards the end of the talk linked to here. (The earlier parts are interesting, too – including the Mormonisation of the Pacific Islands, and Samoan ruins may be of a large ancient city.)

Locally-owned Masterton-based Tranzit Group Ltd has won the tender for 60 per cent of the services.

And in Kapiti, UZABus in Palmerston North will take over the bus contract from mid-next year.

Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) chairman Chris Laidlaw said Tranzit had committed to hire as many bus drivers as possible from the region’s existing workforce.

Palmerston North-based UZABus has a fleet of 280 buses and also has services to the Bay of Plenty and Manawatu-Wanganui regions.

The council said both UZABus and Tranzit had more environmentally friendly fleets that would significantly reduce pollutants.
( that is bullshit. UZA bus has a depot right across the road from my work place and I can tell you that most of the buses are plonkers. Nothing friendly about them)

Its also true that NZ buses have been adding new buses to their fleet at a great rate. Built by Kiwi buses.

The decisions were expected to save several million dollars a year, paving the way for initiatives such as fare discounts.

So screw the drivers to subsidize the fares.
Not a lot of difference between Laidlaw and Gould as I see it. both a pair of plonkers.

The story seemed full of overblown rhetoric to me.

Earlier today on GD, I reported on Douglas Murray’s concerns over the destruction of Europe. This afternoon I read a few more of Murray’s essays and found this one in the Jewish Chronicle where he warns the Jews to stop being so conspicuous in the drive to turn all Goyim countries black:

Many Jewish groups and Jewish leaders have been taking a conspicuous lead in welcoming refugees. Some initiatives – such as that to save Christian children in the Middle East who are being ”cleansed” from the region – are hugely admirable and widely appreciated. But it is specific and needed. Other initiatives and statements from Jewish leaders and groups appear to be welcoming any and all refugees and equating the plight of 1930s Jews with all 21st-century migrants. This is not just a misreading of history but an incorrect application of history. It also sets up a dangerous linkage between Jews who are already in Europe and an increasingly unpopular, current European migration policy. Allow me to relay some recent personal anecdotes. They do not add up to an analysis but they are scents of something I believe is now in the wind.

During an episode of Question Time last month, the historian Simon Schama made a somewhat haughty and personal attack on my Spectator colleague Rod Liddle. Specifically, he chided Rod (who was urging wariness of letting into the country anybody who wants to come here) for allegedly turning his ”suburban face” away from the troubles of the world. This was a little rich, and I said in print that it is all very well for Professor Schama to swan into Britain and tell us to take millions of migrants because he can always head back to his well-off (and distinctly white) neighbourhood in the US.

When the piece went viral, the replies included an element that was new and seized on an aspect of Schama that never occurred to me. ”One law for the Jews, another for the rest of us” was the nub of it. Well, Schama is a distinguished public figure and can say and think what he likes. Nobody else needs to feel responsible for him.

A couple of weeks later, the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, got into a row with his country’s most successful son. At a time when Orban was under huge pressure from his electorate not to let thousands of migrants into the country, he upbraided George Soros for being behind the many ”open borders” NGOs which were putting pressure on Hungary. In reply, Soros confirmed that, yes, whereas Orban thought migrants the problem and borders the solution, Soros did indeed think borders the problem and migrants the solution.

In reporting this exchange, the same theme emerged. ”It’s all very well for the Jews. They have Israel where only Jews can go and all the time they’re destroying our own religious and racial identity in Europe.”

And another theme started to come up which I never thought I’d hear in my lifetime: ”Ah – the rootless, cosmopolitan Jew.” Searching online I find that this is indeed becoming a theme. A video watched hundreds of thousands of times on YouTube excerpts an interview with a Jewish academic in Sweden who explains that Europe ”has not yet learned how to be multicultural.”

She goes on: ”Europe is not going to be the monolithic societies that they once were in the last century. Jews are going to be at the centre of that. It’s a huge transformation for Europe to make. They are now going into a multicultural mode, and Jews will be resented because of our leading role.”

Why is it that Jews always demand open borders for 3rd world mass immigration into Goyim countries but maintain the most racist immigration policy in the world – even forcing potential immigrants to take a blood test so they can prove they are part of the tribe?

        I actually didn’t discuss it with them Milkmaid but then again I don’t think I needed to as they were the type of people who think that the actions of Europeans in demographically erasing themselves should be motivated by guilt over what supposedly happened ~ 85 years ago, and that constantly reinforced “guilt” should trump any concern with the effects of immigration on social cohesion, unemployment, crime, and welfare costs — not to mention the ethnic genetic interests of Europeans.

Humans must leave Earth within 100 years if we want to survive, Professor Stephen Hawking has warned. But the commie green movement won’t tell you that because its hard to get support when you are telling people not to have babies. Instead they actually promote policies that subsidise breeders.

      As I am done with breeding, I feel I can provide a disinterested assessment of potential pod candidates from KB.
      
      No-one with 10,000+ comments will be considered (too lazy).
      GoVege will be a definite shoe-in; she can be chief cook and plan exciting menus of tofu and spirogyra.
      We will have to have some Labour Party members as they are such diversity stalwarts.
      LGTB folk can apply, as long as they are prepared to cross-breed.
      We can take one atheist and one omnist; I think the rest should be spiritual blanks or agnostics.

Democrat judges in the US are beginning to place illegal immigrant’s welfare above citizens. Uber drives under false name, rapes a woman passenger, and the judge gives him bail of $2500 and now the ICE people can’t find him. Another illegal felon was let escape out of the back door of the court so ICE couldn’t arrest him. There are other examples on Tucker’s interview with a guest.
