In field of psychology, the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias, wherein persons of low ability suffer from illusory superiority when they mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. The cognitive bias of illusory superiority derives from the meta-cognitive inability of low-ability persons to recognize their own ineptitude. Without such self-awareness they cannot objectively evaluate their actual competence or incompetence.[1]
As described by David Dunning and Justin Kruger, the cognitive bias of illusory superiority results from an internal illusion in people of low ability and from an external misperception in people of high ability; that is, “the miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others.”[1]

Other investigations of cognitive dissonance, such as Why People Fail to Recognize Their Own Incompetence (2003), indicate that much incorrect self-assessment of competence derived from the person’s ignorance of the standards of performance of a given activity. The pattern of overestimation of competence appeared in studies of reading comprehension, of the practice of medicine, of motor-vehicle operation, and the playing of games such as chess and tennis;[2] moreover, in Revisiting Why Incompetents Think They’re Awesome (2012), Dunning and Kruger’s research indicates that incompetent people will:

Fail to recognize their own lack of skill

Fail to recognize the extent of their inadequacy

Fail to accurately gauge skill in others, and

Recognize and acknowledge their lack of skill only after being exposed to formal training in that skill.[6]

  Clearly WoO has some comms problems, in particular:
  – failing to recognise his lack of skill in commenting
  – failing to recognise his inadequacy in getting his point across
  – failing to accurately gauging the interest (or lack of) KB readers in his diatribes (which in comms terms is a fatal flaw)
  and
  – it is clear that he hasn’t had any formal comms training as WoO keeps on spurting out stuff that is down-ticked mercilessly because of his utter failure to hit the mark with his comms (even Stephie and MM get their point across more effectively – contrary as it is to the readerships’ prevailing views)
  
  All in all – a walking, talking, commenting text book example of cognitive dissonance.

  This is probably the greatest Academic troll of all time
  
  “The penis is a social construct that causes climate change”. That statement sounds ridiculous, right? Well two men managed to get it published in a respectable peer reviewed academic journal.
  
  Naming their hoax paper “The conceptual penis as a social construct”, the two men set out to sound as ridiculous as possible and still make sense to Social scientists. At one point in time, they even used a random word generator to generate arguments for their paper…. the peer reviewers still found no faults with the contents of the paper. Writing an exposé explaining why and how they managed to get the paper published in a “high quality journal”, the two men said everything they wrote in the paper was “utter nonsense” and should have never been published. They intentionally stocked the paper with jargons like “hyper-masculinity”, “post-structuralist discursive gender theory” and “pre-post-patriarchal society” – words that even they do not understand, in order to give it more credibility.
  They used this prank/satirical website as references for their paper, and the peer reviewers still didn’t realize that they were being trolled. In short, the paper backed up its claims with references to fake papers that no not exist. The peer reviewed journal, Cogent Social Sciences, went ahead to publish it. The peer reviewers gave the hoax paper very high marks, praising it as “sound” and “outstanding”.

    Sorry, Kea, but there’s a bit of a “hoax” in that story itself. It wasn’t a “respectable peer reviewed academic journal”. After failing to get that paper published elsewhere, the authors used a “pay-to-publish” journal with token peer review system. The journal, “Cogent Social Sciences” (from memory), has only been going 2-3 years and doesn’t even have an Impact Factor (a rough guide to academic influence).
    Another “Sokal” affair, it ain’t.
    (we went over all this on Kiwiblog a few days ago, btw).

        I think my point’s reasonably clear. The Sokal affair was much more impressive. From what I read when krazykiwi first posted about this “hoax”, it’s not the only of its type. The others have concentrated on exposing the “racket” that is “pay-to-publish” journals of little standing. Years ago I was getting e-mails offering to publish my poetry in things like “An Anthology of the World’s Best Poets” for a price (I don’t even write poetry) – some of these pay-to-publish journals seem to be somewhat similar.

It is interesting seeing the hypersensitivity over Katie Hopkins tweet about requiring a final solution to Europe’s deadly, escalating and seemingly never ending suffering at the hands of Islamic terrorism.

Am I the only one who finds it extraordinary that one can’t commit a word crime about an alleged event ( I say alleged as “denying” this one historical event can land you in prison in 20 countries – see link) 85 years ago yet the real final solution of European people that will see them as despised minorities in their ancient homelands through mass scale immigration of low IQ, hostile, fast breeding 3rd worlders can’t be criticised without being labelled “racism”.

  That is why it was so disappointing reading the post a couple of days calling for Katie’s sacking. It seems to me that time and again left-wing commentators and journalists are getting away with figurative murder given the incendiary beat-up articles that they write, and at the same time there is a concerted effort on the part of this same clique to shut down any contrary opinion, or to jump on any slip of word or phrase that is used by a conservative commentator. Winston Peters said last week their internal polling had them at 19% and one of the Peter’s loyalists Paul Scott pledged on here last week they will get 19% at the election in September but the Roy Morgan poll has them down from 10.70% to 10% in the Latest poll.Has the huffing and puffing from Winston with the Trump like chest pumping starting to make the public realize that Peter’s is only number one when he is racial bashing the chinese.

    You should watch the panel on Q + A. They do not share your view of Winston. The panel was not mainly left is often on the Nation. One on the panel was Kerry McDonald. He agrees with Winston about immigration and GDP per capita as do the others on the panel.

IMHO wont be too long before we see the good citizens of the UK rebel against their government and security for forces for failing to protect them and then blaming the citizens for ‘hate crimes” and other imagined offence.
Dont write off the British. The stiff upper lip can and will quiver in the face of government opposition to them.

I predict May will struggle to hold on and could finish up with a very small majority as the citizens use the ballot as a protest.

    Interesting take. When I studied Family Law, Ruth Busch as lecturer. (For any that know her enough said), but I thought that it is just a way of creating wealth redistribution. The bread winner can usually make more money and ‘recover’ and the recipient is not as reliant on the State.
    I am not sure if that is what I was mean to think. 😉

      I didn’t trawl the MSM looking at different stories, but where I did look, there wasn’t much of a “lone wolf” angle at all. The initial reports were of an explosion at a concert, then a terrorist bomb, and then questions of how many might be involved. It wasn’t like the sort of reporting you get when someone drives a truck into a crowd, or runs amok with a knife. Bombs typically involve more than one person (and most of the UK media knows that – the UK’s had decades of experience with bombings).

Funny, I though 2006 was when they STOPPED charging interest as long as you met your repayment obligations and were resident in NZ. I was paying interest from day one on my loan, there is no way someone who left in 1993 didn’t know they were being charged interest and that there were specific payment obligations if you left the country.

        Before I could start to effectively argue whether Kea’s occasional outbursts are over the top trolling or forceful argument I’d have to know how you perceive internet debate.
        
        If we were deciding the fate of the world in a public bar or a smoko room we would have many ways of making a point & interpreting the response. We would take cues from frowns/smiles, body stance, voice tone/pitch & maybe tactile senses such as pat on the back or a smack around the head.
        
        But we are arguing about a one dimensional world where ability to use the written word is the only factor dictating your ability to move an argument. It is also subject to a time delay unlike conversation.

Complete insanity continues in American college campuses.

Over the last 72 hours, students have taken over a small liberal arts college in Washington state, and only one adult has tried to stop them.

Students at Evergreen State College in Olympia, who filmed their exploits and posted the videos on social media, have occupied and barricaded the library, shouting down anyone who disagrees with them or shows insufficient passion for racial justice.

Biology professor Bret Weinstein was berated by dozens of students outside of his classroom Tuesday morning for refusing to participate in an event in which white people were invited to leave campus for a day. Now, he says police have told him to hold his classes off campus due to safety concerns.

Things are “out of control at Evergreen,” he said.
“Police told me protesters stopped cars yesterday, demanding information about occupants,” Mr. Weinstein told The Washington Times. “They believe I was being sought. It appears that the campus has been under the effective control of protesters since 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Police are on lockdown, hamstrung by the college administration. Students, staff and faculty are not safe.”

It gets even crazier as you read on. Students are totally out of control and just, well, idiots.

      Tucker Carlson usually has a segment on college campuses but is devoting an entire show to it next week. It’s getting out of control, with students putting forwards lists of demands and getting them. Getting professors or even presidents fired who don’t kowtow to their liberal demands. Dubai’s first Robocop is every bit as weird as you’d expect

The world’s first operational robot police officer joined the Dubai Police force on Sunday. Emirates 24/7 News reports that the robocop greeted guests at the opening of the 4th Gulf Information Security Expo Conference (GISEC). Although the Robocop was first unveiled in 2015, the time has come for it to commence its duty. Dubai, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates, plans to replace a large portion of its human police force with Robocops.

I imagine our writer-in-resident, Stars and Stripes, could incorporate this futuristic idea into his next Postcard series instalment in a creative way!

Caught up with Niki Rauti yesterday, (the directly-affected ‘State’ tenant making a very brave and uncompromising stand against the privatisation of State housing, at 14 Taniwha St Glen Innes) – still no news regarding her Appeal decision in the Auckland District Court.

To put it crudely, in my opinion, the Judge has been presented with a very big, stinking legal turd, with just a pinch of glitter…..

(Full credit to Niki’s lawyer, Justin Harder, who did a GREAT job, pro-bono.)

In my view, this Judge, whichever way he jumps, is going to have to be seen to cover his butt, because ‘the world is watching’.

If the Judge does not uphold Niki’s Appeal – no big deal – it will be appealed to the next level.

In the meantime – the truth about the Tamaki ‘Regeneration’ – GENTRIFICATION $CAM is being revealed.

In my view, it is effectively a State-sponsored LAND GRAB of public property for private property developer$ and the wealthy.

How come, when Minister of Building and Construction Nick Smith, wants to grab public reserve land at Point England, for private property development, when on his watch, as one of the two Crown shareholding Ministers of Tamaki Regeneration Ltd (who own 2,704 former Housing NZ properties in Tamaki) there are currently 76 BARE SECTIONS (where Housing NZ properties used to be) and apparently 70 empty former Housing NZ properties?

How do I know?

Because I spent two weeks personally going around 119 streets and checking these 2,704 addresses for myself.)

Which is why I’m standing as an (‘Anti-corruption’ Independent candidate in the Tamaki electorate, to help expose what I believe to be this Tamaki ‘Regeneration’ – GENTRIFICATION $CAM.

Surprise, surprise.

Radio Labour this morning gives a plug to a pro-immigration activist who is standing for Parliament (Wellington Central). Gayaal Iddamalgoda seeks greater entry to NZ for refugees and immigrants. Iddamalgoda, Sri Lanka born, came to NZ when he was aged four.

The name of the campaign is Migrant and Refugee Rights Campaign (Aotearoa/NZ). Iddamalgoda more or less admitted in the radio interview that he was looking for a platform to get his views out. These being from the Left, Radio NZ obliged.

Iddamalgoda told the interviewer he wants to make working class Kiwis realise they have more in common with refugees than they do with the wealthy, and he liberally sprinkled his interview with references to “tangata whenua”.

“I would people to vote Left, and vote National out … to be perfectly honest … I am still waying (sic) up who I would give my party vote to…”

How many other microscopic parties will Radio NZ give air time to? My guess is none.

President Trump on Saturday at the G-7 Summit in Italy declined to join six other leading nations in their pledge to uphold the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

Trump posting on Twitter earlier in the day that he would make a final decision next week about whether the United States would remain in the deal, in which the major countries agreed to cut back on the emission of greenhouse gases and pollutants believed to be increasing the earth’s temperature and harming the environment.

The other six members of the G- 7 — Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom — reaffirmed their commitment to the agreement, signed by former President Barack Obama.

The group also said the U.S. is “not in a position to join consensus” on climate change.

British Airways denies cyber attack to blame for global IT outage, flight chaos

British Airways has canceled all flights from London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports due to a global IT outage Saturday. The airline said they believe the source of the outage was a power supply issue and not a cyber attack.

“We believe the root cause was a power supply issue and we have no evidence of any cyber attack,” British Airways CEO, Alex Cruz, said in a video posted to Twitter.

  Quite coincidentally I watched Die Hard 4 (again) last night.
  
  The film’s plot is based on an earlier script entitled WW3.com by David Marconi, screenwriter of the 1998 film Enemy of the State. Using John Carlin’s Wired magazine article entitled “A Farewell to Arms”, Marconi crafted a screenplay about a cyber-terrorist attack on the United States. The attack procedure is known as a “fire sale”, depicting a three-stage coordinated attack on a country’s transportation, telecommunications, financial, and utilities infrastructure systems.
  
  It was a great movie, with lots of action scenes, but I have a horrible feeling that I missed something important. Any thoughts?

Adelaide’s angry pedestrian is the funniest thing you’ll see today

An enraged pedestrian who got a dose of instant karma when he walked into a traffic light pole in Adelaide has become an unwitting viral sensation.
The dashcam video shows a car heading up Wyatt St in the city, and stopping at the lights to turn into Flinders St.

An upset man walking a dog gesticulates angrily and mouths abuse at the driver for no apparent reason as he crosses at the lights — but is so intent on his rant he then walks into the traffic light.

That’s when he really gets upset …

      While flying into an Australian international airport recently a Customs official grabbed my immigration card, marked it and gave it back to me. Good I thought, I’m going to get passed through. I was wrong. I was taken aside from other passengers and forced to stand in a line with about a dozen other unfortunates. Then we waited while a dog and handler was arranged and run along the line, vigorously sniffing us all as we stood there.
      
      Nothing was found and we were told we could leave. I objected to what had happened but the Customs officers said something like “too bad you’re upset mate”.
      
      In fact these ignorant misguided heavily uniformed power drunk thugs had just breached one of the most basic tenets of Western civilisation, being that no one who is not under suspicion of committing a crime should be stopped and searched by authorities (police, customs whoever) while going about their lawful business.
      
      My protests along these lines to the officers concerned fell on completely deaf ears.
      
      Hopefully Redbaiter hasn’t been tweeting from inside the clink all this time!

  Nice place Adelaide. I went over there for the first time last year to do some work with the good folks at the Adelaide Institiute.
  
  In addition to the work, we spent a clue of days exploring the Barossa Valley and watching cricket at the Adelaide Oval which IMHO is the best place to watch test cricket in the world (as Pukekura Park and Molyneux Park don’t host tests…..)

    I enjoyed watching day-night test cricket at the Adelaide Oval on TV. The session between dinner and stumps, particularly with the panoramic sunset, is spectacular. The facilities looked in pretty good nick too, from what I could see. By contrast, my parents visited Lords last year, and I was told that the facilities looked run-down.
    
    Did you pop in to see Maggie Beer when you visited the Barossa Valley?

      We did visit Maggie Beer’s for lunch Nostie! They food was delicious and they were such warm hosts.
      
      Talking to the cricket lovers – they are not happy with the Oval redevelopment in so far as it has lost much of its grass mound but given it’s a ground share with AFL, they are hard headed enough to realise it was necessary.
      
      Lords is all about the atmosphere. Lunch in the outer oval behind the commentary box is perhaps the best “halftime break” there is in modern sport.

Since it’s Sunday and we’re probably waiting for the movie to start, here’s something interesting, with photos. This church in Italy which has got sculptures that are very difficult to explain in terms of how could they possibly have been done with hammer and chisel, yet there we are. You check the photos and you’ll see what I mean.

Not to mention the other “exhibit” which is even more mysterious.

You might also want to start being careful about casually repeating such bullshit yourself, because you just did, and while I’m not about to sue anyone for libel, it’s not a good look for a lawyer to engage in it.
