If I were a female reporter / presenter at RNZ I would be seriously considering my options.

Possibly in the interests of diversity, they now have to call themselves ‘hoes’

For example, ‘Ko Katrina Batten, a Hoe’ or ‘Ko Katherine Ryan, a Hoe’

It’s awful to hear a respected journalist self-flagellating like that.

  OMG! I didn’t realise it was Maori I thought Kartina just had a funny name that sounded like “Call Katrina Batten a hoe!”
  
  I had to put up with listening to National Radio over summer. At least it made me constantly aware of tax payers being used to fund yet another Cultural Marxist agitprop operation. Wall to wall Leftoid man hating anti capitalist propaganda.
  
  National Radio needs to be defunded. The comrades working there will be forced to try make a living doing something that is at least somewhat economically productive.

    The above is a good point. For the 93% of us kiwi’s who can’t speak maori I think Red Radio should be providing us with a translation of the Maori spoken by the announcers. That way would not think day after day that Katrina is a hoe.
    I also think for us hard of hearing that they should have a Signer in the studio as well.

        There’s more to this than Radio NZ announcers tossing in Maori expressions.
        
        It’s part of the agreement between Radio NZ and the network of 21 Maori radio stations – Te Whakaruruhau o Nga Reo Irirangi Maori. These stations are mostly funded by Te Mangai Pao, the State funding agency for Maori broadcasting.
        
        Under the deal, Radio NZ gives the Maori stations access to its programming and news. Radio NZ chief executive Paul Thompson said last August in announcing the deal that the Maori stations would also “tap into RNZ’s expertise at transforming itself from a radio broadcaster into a multimedia content creator”.
        
        It might amuse some with fading hearing when an RNZ announcer appears to introduce herself as “Hoe X”, but there are serious issues here.
        
        On the Maori side of the agreement with Radio NZ were John Tamihere and Willy Jackson, who has emerged as Maori campaign director for the Labour Party.
        
        Since the agreement was signed, Radio NZ has, to a mild degree, “Maorified” itself.
        
        With no political announcements of the changes, it appears a though the Radio NZ board is sailing ahead itself with big issues for the State broadcaster. The big one is transforming a State radio service into a State internet service. I haven’t seen any reports of politicians’ discussions about this.

        In the NZ context, and the failure to understand (not even speak!) simple and increasingly common Maori vocabulary when it is mentioned in passing, yes. But your ‘Thicko’-ness is a matter of volition rather than nature or nurture.

  I love the way RNZers desperately attempt to sound so correct with their Maori pronunciation. Not sure how they manage to turn Kerikeri into ‘kiddy kiddy’ but they do. I recognise that English is a minefield of pronunciation (yes, ‘ghoti’ really could be pronounced ‘fish’ in English) but the early missionaries simply transcribed the Maori they heard being spoken into comparable English sounds, didn’t they? Had they heard ‘kiddy kiddy’ then I reckon they would probably have written it that way. However they didn’t!

        Odakyu-sen is on the right track. There are bureaucrats and activists who dream up Maori words, such as for new technology. (In more vibrant languages, foreign terms are instead co-opted.)
        
        As in English, you can bet these Te Reo experts are trying to influence pronunciation.
        
        Meanwhile, regional differences persist in Maori pronunciation, as in the “k” sounds in the South Island. If the Maori language does bounce back, expect even more language bureaucrats, who will fill their days partly by disputing what is authentic pronunciation.

        Odakyu-sen’s comment is not quite as far-fetched as it sounds. My understanding is that there is some standardisation of Maori pronunciation going on, probably accelerated by the decline in the number of genuine native speakers and the rise of Maori as a formally taught language. Standardisation is quite normal in other countries with the spread of a national form of a language at the expense of local variations.
        Edit: OS and J5 have made the same point.
        
        Even if my speculation is wrong, I still think Nukuleka has a valid point. Sounds and sound distinctions which are obvious to native speakers are often much less obvious to speakers of another language and inconsistent with standard practice in the new language, so words moving from one language to another are often modified along with their grammar to ease the non-native speaker’s speaking burden. Some people see this normal modification as racist mangling; others see the use of the original form in the new language as needless and pretentious verbal contortion.

        Yes, there has been standardisation of Maori pronunciation and spelling.
        
        I am W(h)anganui born and bred and for nearly 40 years of my life I never heard that city pronounced as Fonganui… either it was Wanganui (pakeha) or
        W(h)anganui.. where W(h) represents an aspirated W sound (as in where, what, when,etc).
        
        Similarly, I never heard Kofai (kowhai), fare (whare)
        fetu (whetu).
        
        The East Coast pronunciation of Maori was taken as the standard back in the 1980s.
        
        West coast Maori have spoken of their fears that their dialect has been drowned out…

      From my admittedly limited understanding, there is no One True Te Reo. Instead there are regional variations.
      
      It was only the White Man who codified Te Reo. Standard Te Reo is a Pakeha invention.
      
      Many languages have no standard pronunciation (try “fish” in English and you get fish, feesh, fush,…), but at least there is an accepted “official” form.

        So? Same is true for English, especially in the UK, where pronunciation, idiom, and even vocabulary can vary quite dramatically across regions. Probably more so than existed with Maori, I’d hazard a guess. Bill Bryson’s “The Mother Tongue” is a fun read on the topic. Try telling an American that BBC pronunciation is the “official” form 🙂

    Pedantically speaking, no, it can’t be, unless you are willing to ignore quite regular rules of pronunciation. The digraph ‘gh’ sounds eff only at the end of a syllable, never at the beginning of a word. Likewise, the pronunciation of ‘ti’ as ‘sh’ is position dependent, beginning an unstressed syllable and followed by a vowel.
    
    However, less pedantically and in the spirit of G B Shaw’s jest, if radio announcers wish to self-identify with a useful gardening tool, that’s ok with me, though it does raise doubts about the accuracy of anything else they say.

      Oh I know, Owl. I do appreciate the sentiment. I have said before, I have learned a lot through Kiwiblog, as I do admit, I am young(ish) and I do come here to increase my wisdom from others’ experiences.
      However, the frustrating part is that I straddle the divide. I believe in individualistic pursuits and responsibility, which is a reason I come here. To fuel up. To be inspired (through the mire) and to, as I’ve said, gain wisdom. Many of my friends are left-learning. I won’t call them names, as that’s quite immature. However, they wanted social change to happen, well, yesterday. And while I respect that, I don’t always agree with them. Hence the reason I keep coming back here… I need to build my experience from those who can recall the 70s-80s like it happened yesterday so I can continue cementing my beliefs.
      So catch my dilemma?
      When I see the “experienced” (as you say) slagging off the things, like hearing Māori on RNZ, it’s kind of frustrating. I have taken the time to learn some Māori. To get pronunciation semi-right. I’ve learned a lot about the English language, as well as understanding the construction of other languages, through learning just an iota of Te Reo. It’s not scary. However, that’s just me, trying to straddle the divide. Just trying to understand and keep my mind flexible.
      I guess what I expect from the “experienced” is constructive topical-reaction, to set the example to the younger “righters” on responding in a way that is higher and more factual than the lefts emotional responses then just venting shit here.

        Blogs are more like street meetings than discussions in Parliament or church synods, and DPF and Kokila Patel run a good General Debate thread, with a lot of tolerance.
        
        A big problem for Maori is that it’s up against the current world lingua franca, and, up against the language which is the vehicle of world popular culture.
        
        I think Maori language will have more chances of surviving if people are enticed into learning it, rather than browbeaten into learning it.

  The facts are: A child is 50 to 100 times as likely to be killed by their non-biological dad as their real dad.
  Some years ago there was talk that all stepdads/mum’s boyfriends were going to be checked out by our social services, or monitored to ensure the kids were safe.
  What happened???

Of course whatever he says be it fact or fiction,is lapped up by our fake news MSM. Latest rant from rat cunning Peters ,was why it is taking so long to fix the roads around Kaikoura,after the massive 7.8 earthquake. He wants answers,seems after six months,what is going on. Perhaps after nearly twelve years,a question to him, might be, what is going on. “where is the NZ Taxpayers $158,000 dollars”, that he has yet to answer the question to,and when will he repay the debt.

Having listened to my Hate Trump offering today I am amused that the so called political rich elite continue to tear the USA apart – or is it the media in Washington and most people do not care one jot if they can get a job which from release figures is showing steady growth.
No wonder the rest of the world – except the New Zealand media are laughing at this as most of the press release in the so called papers are runners from such as the left wing Washington Post who are significantly anti Trump and all he stands for.
No wonder Putin is laughing at the antics and has now threatened to suck up to North Korea – just to get the USA senior political appointments and electorates to wet their pants.
Having worked with and for some USA Corporates off shore many years ago they are now really getting paranoid.
Trump won – get over it and watch the Clinton scandals begin to emerge – Comey ducked the issues with the precious FBI. Look at the statement and photos of the Bangladesh President who was “persuaded” to give to the Clinton Foundation considerable sum for Bangladesh. Now will the FBI get their act together and stop playing politics.
If it wasn’t so serious it would be funny.
I look forward to hearing my daily hate of Trump every day.

Mr Nuttall, UKIP’s leader, said the party is doing the “noble thing” by standing aside in constituencies with eurosceptic Conservative MPs.

But prevailing thought is that a bigger win for May strengthens the domestic position for a softer Brexit.

In the early 1990s we were told the up coming TOW settlements would be used by the Iwi to benefit ‘their’ people.

I and many other White MotherF….. wrongly assumed that would result in reduced poverty, reduced crime a rise in education standards and that Maori would join the White MotherF…. in terms of statistics across a raft of issues.

Sadly that has not come to pass. After Billions of dollars of mine and the other White Motherf….. taxes have changes hands the bad stats for Maori are still bad and worse than the White Motherf…….

      The South Canterbury Finance payment was made under the Crown Retail Deposit Guarantee Scheme. I agree that was a disaster, paying out investors who, in turn for higher risk, received higher interest rates. The Government then covered the losses.
      
      This should never be allowed to happen again. If there are problems in the aftermath of the Auckland property bubble it will be in propping up banks. Let’s hope that, in contrast with the finance company bailouts, the Government takes equity stakes in return for any help.

As we all know, the body was found in a burning ambulance several blocks away and has now been rendered useless for further forensic tests such as extracting the bullets and determining what gun fired them, as well as being rendered useless for evidential and prosecutorial purposes.

As we all know, the day Foster was murdered many Clinton Administration officials crawled all over Foster’s office, extracting various papers. A MIG team was even signed into the WH to open his office safe. His secretary said two envelopes in it, addressed to Janet Reno and to William Kennedy III, were taken.

What did Foster know?

He knew about Whitewater, Waco, and Mena.

Waco was one of the most evil things the Federal govt has ever done against its own citizens. You know why they did it? Educate yourself.

The McMurray Building stored the evidence from Waco and Mena. That’s why they did that. That’s how important that was.

The destruction of his body has eliminated the possibility of prosecuting Clinton for that murder.

But there are many other murders in the closet.

Went looking for gas heaters today. Was told shops don’t stock them anymore. Evidently the H&S nazis Key setup have decided they’re too dangerous because apparently they emit CO2. Not that anyone can recall anyone ever suffering from CO2 poisoning and even if one or two did, was it because they weren’t using them per instructions or because they were inherently dangerous.

Regardless, H&S nazis have decided adults aren’t allowed to make their own choices any more, so they’ve banned the most efficient heating product on the market.

And the politicians have given them this power, and given them hundreds of millions of our money to build a brand new dept with lots of staff to come up with fucking stupid ideas like this left, right and centre. All because we had one accident in a coal mine.

WTF is wrong with people that we just put up with this utter shit without doing anything about it? In the olden days I’d just call a town hall meeting and calmly explain the malady, we’d all go and grab our equipment we had on standby for this kind of thing, one of us would grab a few chocks, another would boil some tar, and pretty soon problem solved, with said politicians and H&S nazis having all learned salutary lessons which they’d tell their grand children about, so significant was their lack of enjoyment arising therefrom.

But today? We just fucking sit and take it, don’t we.

While woofters like stupidboy prance around celebrating how much safer we are and bureaucrats like mm dream up even more ways to lipcurl and sneer.

What a fucking stupid world we have.

  I remember the old days in Japan with kerosene heaters in the winters. Each winter there would be a dozen or so deaths through carbon monoxide poisoning.

Not sure about the effectiveness of this personally as I have known many people who have killed themselves for whatever reason in their youth but bar one the thing they all had in common was they were pretty messed up people and had been that way for quite a while so when they did it no massive shock was experienced.
Meaning they were well beyond the help level of a school nurse or a GP, in fact I’m not sure anyone could have helped them.
