He’s sitting with his ass up in the air and an elephant wanders by and thinks: “Why not?” Has his way with the lion. The lion finally pulls his head from the rabbit hole and chases after the elephant. The elephant runs into an expedition tent, sees a pith helmet and a newspaper.       Freeman Dyson was right. The models used to predict temperatures decades into the future have a huge margin of error and require many questionable assumptions.
      
      Carbon based gases trap heat. If we emit more of them, and nothing else changes, we should expect higher temperatures. But many other things are changing and that’s why people use models to predict temperature.
      
      Anyone can make a model that works for past data. I can make one that predicts lotto numbers and would have made its user very rich by now if they had it back in 1990. But useful models must work for events that haven’t happened yet.
      
      The models used by the IPCC and others over-estimated the warming in the 2001-2010 period and those models have now been altered. It’s too soon to know if the current ones are any better but we should be very skeptical.

        Jonar, I can see there is variation of views on Darwinism in the Muslim world, as there is in the Western world.
        
        However, missing in Christian sceptics is the strong recent influence of Saudi Arabia’s Wahhabi Islam , which declares those who believe in evolution to be apostates, with all that implies.
        
        I would be interested to know whether NZ mosques and Islamic schools teach either the theory of evolution, or tolerance towards those who believe in it.

        ‘False’? Semantics. They’re all definitely altered.
        All the large datasets have numerous biases such as station moves, instrument changes, time of observation changes, urban heat island biases, inconsistency in measuring techniques and other so-called inhomogenities that have occurred over the last 150 years. This means the Datasets get adjusted all the time. Raw data is never used these days.
        It’s common knowledge and often detailed on eaches web site. Our own NIWA even does it.
        You really have no idea- as usual.

    It’s a draw, no matter how they want to spin it. Both sides would be best to keep their moths shut and it will all be forgotten in a week. To those who would say that the finding that he defamed Earl Hagaman is somehow vindication for the anti-Andrew brigade, it leaves open the question of whether he was entitled to do so. It’s like holding against someone that they struck another, without any decision on whether they were defending themselves.

      The jury made the best decision possible for National. Labour is stuck with him as leader now, but his credibility has taken a massive hit, as will his bank balance when his lawyer sends the bill for the High Court trial.
      
      And if Earl Hagaman passes away without a further attempt by Little to apologise directly, rather than through the media, it’s going to look as though he hounded an elderly man to the grave.

  Some like Rugby, some hate it- But Unanimously we all thought Sonny Bill is a complete hypocritical dickhead here..(For a variety of reasons)

      Michael Jones had no commitment to major commercial sponsors and every organisation involved with rugby knew that Jones would not play on Sunday. Neither did the Going family and neither is rugby played on Sundays in the Pacific islands.

      There’s a big difference between Jones (and the Going brothers, and cricketers Vic Pollard, Bryan Yuile and Bruce Murray before him). They made their objection to playing on Sundays known BEFORE they were selected, and were happy to be overlooked had their objections been seen as an insurmountable problem.
      
      That was indeed the case with Jones in 1995 for the Rugby World Cup. The All Blacks were likely to play at least two and possibly three games on Sundays, and Laurie Mains chose NOT to pick Jones because it would leave the team one loose forward short for those games. Jones did not protest the decision; he held firm to his principles, and all power to him.
      
      Williams has been happy to wear an AIG logo on his All Black jersey, and Steinlager before that, even though he converted to Islam long before first being selected for the All Blacks. His objections now look as though he is holding the sport to ransom.

    That overlooks that one’s religious ethics can grow, develop and change over time. I converted to Christianity, but over the years some of my attitudes and actions have changed. SBW, as a relatively recent convert to Islam, and a young man still maturing and also growing in his faith has that right without his integrity being called into question. Churlish to consider it as one of the reasons that makes him in your opinions a “complete hypocritical dickhead”. Reflects more on you and your mates, IMHO.

    SBW’s approach is unlike that of Vic Pollard who played soccer for NZ as well as cricket. He didn’t play on Sundays, story end of. People accepted it and got on with it. He accepted it limited his opportunities.
    If he was so concerned about his faith and it’s conflict with banking practice he should have taken his stance from the start of his career.

      Even if SBW was so young in his faith he didn’t realise or consider it an issue at the time? Pollard, from memory, grew up in a sabbath-observing household and it was a well-established part of his religious ethics by the time he was playing representative sport – which just started to be scheduled on a Sunday during the latter part of his career. So you are comparing apples and…(going for an Arabic menu here!) dates, figs and olives.

    Some journalist should do an investigation into Islamic banking. As far as I can tell it appears to be smoke and mirrors.
    
    They don’t believe in interest, so instead of taking out a mortgage and paying interest, they have an alternative sort of hire purchase system where the bank buys the house through a trust and you gradually buy it back and also pay rent to the bank.
    
    For commercial loans, the bank becomes a ‘business partner’ and gets a ‘share of profits’. That share just coincidentally happens to be a fixed proportion of the money advanced by the bank.
    
    Both are financially (and morally) equivalent to a loan with interest, just with different terminology. And most Muslims in the West don’t bother because it is too hard and there’s no point.

        Yep. It is their religion, and when it comes to something which has no or minimal effect on others, or, in the case of SBW, where he negotiates an out-clause with his employer where all parties including the sponsor are satisfied, the objections or even opinions of others are not something that any Muslim is obligated to consider. Considering and discussing the various aspects of sharia is fair enough, but it is damned rude for non-adherents to tell people what form their religion should take. Sure, dispute the foundations of Islam and where it intersects with your life, but questioning the integrity of someone you don’t know, and insisting they should do something in spite of their conscience? Sounds like fascist tendencies to me. Freedom of religion, anyone?
        
        And I gotta say, like the prior expectations, and then the response to the Andrew Little defamation decision, I’m a bit disappointed in the Kiwiblog community. I thought there was more capacity for objectivity and sober judgement. But those got jettisoned right from the beginning because the issues are Islam and/or SBW…

I was surprised to hear that Little was pleased it was all over.
The result was actually no surprise as the Judge’s summary (Judge called Helen Clark ) is to say the least not balanced, but that is for the Court of Appeal to review. From then on it was all over before Monday. The hours the jury took was the indication that for a poor little man to defame rich pricks it was all over (should be called David v Goliath).
How a jury (but if course a Wellington one) could find some cases of no defamations was illusory as Little admitted same before the trial in his derisory offer of $100,000.
We know that Wellington is the SJW (Social Justice Warriors) capital of the country.
If Little thinks it is all over he must adjust his contact lenses.

While in many moments of history the first interpretation had prevailed, today other interpretations exist that question the traditionally imposed penalty for the apostate (murtadd), but also the very meaning of the term.

I am awaiting the howls of outrage from some on Kiwiblog that the RSA are using a symbol so easily mistaken for a white feather of cowardice in this way. And, “yes’, I thought they looked good, so I bought one.

I live in Birkenhead, on Auckland’ North Shore. This morning, Newshub (The Am Show) were doing their 9 in 10 game in Highbury shops. Perfect opportunity to win a 9 day cruise I thought.   A few days ago Trump announced America had no interest in deposing Assad. Suddenly that’s changed.
  It’s hard to believe he formulated a plan for the country in the interim, but you can guarantee Russia & Iran have.
  Similarly with Nth Korea. If the regime there is blown away, what comes next? One hates to think.

  History is replete with examples of lands being fought over, lost and won, ownership changing etc. If every country were to pay ‘reparations’ to those they took land from it would be a complete neverending mess.     But that is not a fair comparison. From 6 February 1840 Maori were not another country. They were subjects of the Crown, with all the privileges. Sure, double-dipping on claims is nonsense, but state-sanctioned theft by the government should be addressed, at least in a Westminster Parliamentary democracy. We aren’t a banana republic.

    No I am very skeptical of the view that terrible things were done in the 19th century to the Peace loving Maori. There are a lot of lies and revisionism about the so called wrongs of the past. The only good thing about the Waitangi tribunal and this settlement is that it may signal the end of massive transfer payments from the citizens of NZ to Maori interests.
    However the guilt of white liberals could be inexhaustible and will only be appeased when Maori run the show.

      I agree there is an element of truth in what you say in your hyperbole. Personally I doubt that settlement of claims will make much material difference for the majority of Maori. Indeed, based on what I have observed over the past 25 years, they seem to be a lightening rod for grievance that inhibits some Maori, rather than benefiting them. I’m not so much talking about knowledge of specific cliams and what was done by whom and when, but more just in the same way that if the English hadn’t turned up in Ireland, the Ngati Irish would have invented them as a source of displeasure and a justification for failure.
      
      However you seem to be implying there is no validity to any historic claim. I don’t think that matches the facts and you are throwing out the baby with the bath water. If a wrong is done, and it is within the power of the offending party to redress it, then they should. Especially when it is the Crown.

  The Police would not have dropped the charges; at the trial stage it would have been the Crown, and in consultation with the complainant. In sexual violence cases it is not at all uncommon to focus just on the primary charge, with other offences committed as part of the offending left aside to be considered as aggravating features if there is a conviction. Given that the lesser charge pleaded to in this case was injuring with intent to injure, it is not hard to see the logic, even without knowing the facts.
  It’s similar to charging someone with murder and with possession of the weapon used to carry out the killing. Juries’ jobs on these sorts of trial are complicated enough without having to reach a verdict on the lesser counts

    Sounds like a botched case to me. he was acquitted of rape and the lesser charge was only injuring with intent.
    Police should have relaid the charge after his acquittal- yes it would have been difficult and expensive but this woman did it. 28 months in prison is no minor charge.

I note that HMS NZ had an unenviable record at Jutland, I think she fired the most shells – and had the least number of hits. Though in return she took but a single 11″ hit that detonated on contact and did little damage.

  The battle cruisers were hammered at Jutland, and in World War 2 the Hood was a famous and tragic case of another battle cruiser.
  
  Sounds as though HMS New Zealand was lucky.

      But as the German Navy crept back to Kiel to rust for the rest of the war, and as the status quo was maintained, the British won Jutland IMHO. Or at least a draw there meant they won the series, although the 1917 U boat offensive was a close-run thing.

        For me the most interesting thing was that the RN had built torpedo planes and carriers and was weeks away from launching an air strike against the German fleet in port when the war ended.

  HPV is sexually transmitted, a lot of parents would struggle thinking of their 9 year old needing to be vaccinated against anything sexual, what is a good age to have that conversation? Should a 9 year old be told what the vaccine is for?
  My daughter got her ‘shot’ at college when they were first rolled out.
  There was this herd thing about it.
  One good thing about every class getting it at school, it negates any stigma around getting a ‘sex’ shot because you are sexually active.
  There are still stigmas attached to things sexual. I believe that men and women are even viewed differently if they have condoms in their wallet or purse. ‘Intent’ to fornicate.
  
  I don’t think that I would have got my daughter vaccinated between 9-12, for HPV which according to that article is optimal and I assume because it is pre sexual. What a sad state that is, it is a long way from the age of consent, let alone still being a child.

    My daughter’s still got a few years to go before she’s old enough but I’ll be getting her immunised. I don’t even think about the sexual side of it – it’s all about cancer prevention for me. Plus, at ages 9-12 the immune response is stronger so they only need 2 shots.
    As for the school in the article… anti-vax nutters have obviously infiltrated the board. If I found out my kid was going to a school run by people who put more faith in youtube videos and dodgy websites than actual science I’d be looking for a new school. What next – chemtrails?

  A white person did cause it. Norman Kirk took a medium sized problem and turned it into a huge problem by creating the DPB. White people can fix that by cutting benefits and (eventually) turn it back into a medium sized problem again.
  
  None of this makes the criminals any less culpable. But if you choose any group in society and tell them they are special, don’t expect the same standards of them as you do of others, and give them money without expecting anything in return, you’ll find that 40+ years later that group and their children and grandchildren will have fallen behind.

    Originally the DPB was intended to support married women with children to escape violent marriages or when the father abandoned them with no means of support.
    (Like my bast**d of an uncle, among many others.)
    I am sure Big Norm never envisaged that hundreds of women would see the DPB as their opportunity to bludge off the taxpayers.

We have gun controls (soon to be tightened apparently) which apply to law abiding citizens and do nothing to stop the gangs getting guns.

It looks like maybe it is time to also try cash restrictions to prevent the gangs getting their hands on untraceable cash.

Perhaps we need a cash license which shows you are responsible enough to use cash.

You have to show the bank before you can draw cash.

Whenever you pay with cash at a show you have to show your cash license to prove you’re competent to use cash.

Before you get a cash license you will have to prove you have a safe at home to store the cash to reduce burglary.

Yup, that will stop gangs accessing cash and clean up crime immediately.

  A year or so ago I was taking pictures on my phone in my car when a Maori woman came over and asked me if I was taking pictures of her and her family.
  I explained I was sending some pix of my son to his older brother in England and offered to show her.
  She was very nice and apologised.
  But if I had been filming her and continued to do so, I would have expected a hostile reaction.
  This case is such a waste of public money and police resources.

“There was a range from grams to ounces being sold…a user may more likely buy a quarter-gram. If you’re buying grams or more, you’re most likely selling some of it, if not all of it.”

The house had surveillance cameras, alarms, and reinforced doors.

In 2016, the ‘typical’ migrant in Australia was born in England and is 44 years old which is actually two years younger than ten years ago. There are however some differences between the states – the ‘typical’ migrant in Queensland was born in New Zealand, while in Victoria the ‘typical’ migrant was born in India. The ‘typical’ migrant in New South Wales was born in China.

Dr Russel Norman and two other Greenpeace protesters face charges after they threw themselves in the sea in front of an oil exploration ship, forcing it to stop its seismic blasting work.

The group are being charged under a 2013 Amendment to the Crown Minerals Act, dubbed the “Anadarko Amendment”, which was put in place to stop protests at sea around oil exploration.

The law change makes it an offence to interfere with or get closer than within 500 metres of an offshore ship involved in oil exploration, with a potential fine of $10,000.

    I hope you aren’t suggesting that Greenpeace told lies about Resolute Forest Products.
    
    Those statements Greenpeace put out about Resolute being a Destroyer of Forests were merely
    “non-verifiable statements of subjective opinion” or just “rhetorical hyperbole”.
