Was wondering which is worse. A shortage of properties to rent,in Wellington,or a shortage of landlords prepared to buy into the rental market. Just been reading a story about the massive shortage of rental properties in Wellington. The solution,by a clown from the Liebour/Green Parties,called Twyford is for long term tenancies for tenants, IRD to purge so called capital gains,on speculators. Same pest Twyford called for anyone buying rental property with chinky names, had to be purged. Landlords have had enough,and stopped buying into a risky business. Especially being liable for methamphetamine infestation,and now responsible for tenant damage to a degree,if we accept a recent court ruling. Seems Liebour/Green Party are behind the shortage of rental properties,it is ratbags like Twyford,who want all rights for tenants,and none for all the “nasty” landlords who take all the investment risks,little wonder there is a massive shortage of rental properties to lease.

  Agree completely. We have sold our rental properties for exactly that reason. All went to first home buyers rather than rental investments. Investments! Anything but.

  What the Left won’t say is they would like to see the whole rental market nationalised to take pesky private landlords right out of the equation. As if this would help completely – for example I knew someone who was complaining about the attitude of a manager of Council owned rentals.

  Tenants don’t pay enough to achieve a decent return vs the risk. Legal conditions onerous on landlords. Better returns, and less stress, to be had elsewhere.

  This is part of a wider attempt to destroy capitalism in every tiny corner of society! Their tool for achieving this is to make the welfare system so unsustainable that it collapses into their endgame solution of a universal basic income.
  
  Every so often a cretinoid marxist (like Little) will slip up and mention their UBI holy grail it’ll surface from time to time in guises like the virtue-signalling “Living Wage”. But the only place where this moronic idea can float (and even then for a fleetingly short time) is in a post-capitalism world.

Not surprisingly Lauren has a considerable advantage over female rivals, including our Rio De Janiero Olympic rep Tracey Lambrechs.

So I’ve been away for a while. Actually about 5 years at a guess. I got very busy with a new business, then flogging that business and going back to work in an evil corporate empire, and now back into a new business which is in a quiet phase. Family all grown up. Bike accidents. World travel. Over this period I’ve not even lurked around KB, so coming back it’s kinda new, and kinda the same.

I’m keen for some of the ‘ol timers to bring me up so speed. What’s new & cool & different? Who’s hot and who’s not?

        So Mr Bill Fanboi – my concerns are about the very real chance that the laziness and weakness of National’s political antennae creates a very real risk of the voters showing their extreme discontent by voting for anyone but Mr 21% and opening the door to the fascism of the Left. We only have to look to Australia to see what a few years of chaotic Leftism can do to a well-performing economy. It’ll take generations to fix the fiscal mess that Gillard and Rudd created.

      Well said Captain. Some people seem to “forget” we are in a MMP environment – it’s not FPP where the majority governing party can do whatever it wishes.
      
      So the same people forget that National (nor any Govt under MMP) did not obtain over 50% of the vote so are reliant on support parties (granted they have come close to 50% on a number of occasions, particularly the last election) and if these support parties do not share the same view on change then what can the majority governing party do.
      
      So these people are asking the wrong questions. One of them is WTF happened to ACT (which lost the plot spectacularly towards the 2011 election and has been on a steep dive since) – they were meant to prop up National’s right flank!
      
      The other question to ask is, now that we have experienced 20 years of MMP, is it still the most appropriate voting system to have? Not only do we have truly minor parties wagging the dog’s tail, we now have a situation where minor parties can be perpetually in power (no matter whether National or Labour are the majority governing party). Is that how it should be? I don’t think that’s what most people envisaged when MMP was introduced.
      
      Anyway seeing that we are stuck with MMP if people want National to veer “more right” they need to stop splitting their vote by voting in these small parties or as a protest vote.

  There is also the issue of freedom of speech to be considered.

The interview draws out the rich vein of social liberalism within the party and that the Shand family exemplified which in many ways laid the foundation for the kind of liberal and progressive society we are to day. Well , worth a listen that , amongst among many things , pays homage to the liberal and progressive spirit with the National Party which is not often associated with .How wrong that assumption is.

You have to laugh at James Shaw and the Greens, they are worried about dirty politics resurfacing at this years Election after the Planet Key Result. With large donations being given to some Parties (just a hint National) they will be able pay for full page adds attacking the Greens and their policies. This coming from the Green’s that get Greenpeace and their splinter groups to do this exact practice against the National Government every day of the year yet it is okay for them but not for others. In one word Hypocrites.

On another subject, I enjoy watching Sky News UK of a morning, and as such, it annoys me when every morning on the dot of 7am that channel changes to Sky News Australia.
I find the goings on in the UK and Europe to be far more interesting than what is happening in Australia. It’s always the same bloody things that happen in Australia anyway, bush fires, political infighting and a change of PM, the corruption of the Aussie Unions or a footballer (of any code) being charged with rape/gun crime/assault/drug possession.
I have emailed Sky NZ only to receive the usual piss weak corporate style reply claiming that it was not something they controlled, this of course is total bullshit. How bloody hard would it be to offer their subscribers a choice?

        There was a high mortality rate in this and other church run establishments. Some (but not all) infants died of malnutrition. Regardless of any fancy way of dressing the facts up to make them more palatable these infants died in the care of members of a religious order that was part of the catholic church.

      Of course they did. It was to such places that the sick , poor and unwanted by the rest of society sought refuge and to which very little funding was given.
      
      I would be interested in the comparative death rates for similar institutions in say France , Holland or Sweden . That would be instructive.

    So a $25 fee for non-residents!! Effectively they have just put anyone outside Hamilton off visiting and have also closed down the various (and numerous) organisations which hold events at The Pavillion. I am an invited exhibitor at one such event, live ‘out of town’ and won’t be paying $50-$75 to simply attend a 2-3 day event. It’s simply not worth it. What really makes things interesting is that many of the exhibitions are the sole annual find-raising for the organisations concerned and also are frequently ‘child-friendly’. NO parent / grandparent will put up $25 per person, in addition to the actual entry fee into the event itself (which can at times be also quite substantial). The policy would seem to be somewhat short-sighted.

    I’m pretty sure that the Theme Gardens will go into a rapid decline if a steep entry fee is charged.
    
    After some years someone in the Council will finally click that the Theme Gardens are only being visited by the well-off… and not the hoi-polloi. They will demand to know why the Council is throwing money at something with low visitor numbers… cut-backs in staffing will be called for.
    
    Saw it happen with Zealandia…

‘So what are the two meetings that Sessions had? The first came at a conference on “Global Partners in Diplomacy,” where Sessions was the keynote speaker. Sponsored by the U.S. State Department, The Heritage Foundation, and several other organizations, it was held in Cleveland during the Republican National Convention.

The conference was an educational program for ambassadors invited by the Obama State Department to observe the convention. The Obama State Department handled all of the coordination with ambassadors and their staff, of which there were about 100 at the conference.

Apparently, after Sessions finished speaking, a small group of ambassadors—including the Russian ambassador—approached the senator as he left the stage and thanked him for his remarks. That’s the first “meeting.” And it’s hardly an occasion—much less a venue—in when a conspiracy to “interfere” with the November election could be hatched.

Sessions also apparently met with the Russian ambassador in September. But on that occasion, Sessions was acting as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, not as a surrogate for the Trump campaign. That’s why the meeting was held in his Senate office. His DOJ spokesperson, Sarah Isgur Flores, says they discussed relations between the two countries – not the election.

There was nothing unusual about this: Sessions met with more than two dozen ambassadors during 2016, including the Ukrainian ambassador the day before the meeting with the Russian ambassador.

There is no reason for Attorney General Sessions to resign. The FBI has forwarded no investigation file regarding Russian campaign shenanigans to his office for review.’

Former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was already forced to resign from the Trump administration after it came to light that he had lied to Vice President Mike Pence about his own conversations with Kislyak. And earlier, Trump’s campaign manager, Paul Manafort, was forced to resign under a cloud of stories about payments he allegedly received from a pro-Russian political party in Ukraine.
  
  A big part of what makes these stories hard to follow is that the context has shifted massively since Election Day. During the campaign, Trump campaigned on an openly pro-Russian policy agenda and spoke constantly of WikiLeaks as central to his campaign message. Under the circumstances, it’s not clear why Trumpworld figures would regard discussions with Russian officials or Russia-linked figures as problematic. Looking at the problematic Kislyak contacts in the broader context of what else was going on in the world makes it clear why skeptics aren’t going to just take Sessions’s word for it that these discussions had nothing to do with the campaign ….”

    There is no evidence full stop that Trump is Pro Russia. In fact his appointees like Mattis have shown to be the opposite.

  Sounds like Bozzone went out a bit hard on the bike. He didn’t look too flash at the finish.
  Two ile be nice to see Allan and Currie head to head but don’t see that happening. Allan has pinned his colours to the Challenge mast and if Currie sticks with coast to coast and IM he won’t cope with Challenge in between. Be nice to see him have a go, tho.

  I think it’s just a sad reflection on the intellect of New Zealand’s so called leaders that firstly we have such an office as Race Relations Conciliator and secondly that we appoint someone to it who’s only ability was that she once could hit a ball well.

Referendum Council expenses do not ‘cut the mustard’, Coalition senator says

A Federal Coalition senator has attacked his Government’s own Referendum Council, saying it has squandered taxpayers’ money on a “$3,000-a-page” discussion paper and a lacklustre website.

The council is tasked with devising a question to recognise Indigenous Australians in the constitution and give advice about the timing of a vote.

But it was yesterday revealed the Referendum Council’s online presence is costing upwards of $1.5 million. Last night the council had a website, a Facebook page with 240 likes, and a Twitter account followed by 359 people.

Some of the costs are eye-watering:

– $30,000 for a 20-page community discussion paper containing details of the constitution, recognition and proposals for change.
– $525,000 for 8 internal meetings (including flights and accommodation).
– $5.7 million for 16 forums with Indigenous people and organisations across Australia.
– $160,000 for a meeting in Broome (a remote Western Australia town) that only 34 people attended.

      Imagine how many taxpayer dollars would be wasted if DARPA’s experiment took a sudden turn and instead of typing, all the monkeys started an en-mass tossing competition.

  Situation normal; the former president (Obama) has left various ‘tripwires’ lying around to impede his replacement (Mr Trump), and one such item has been found. The finder has (correctly) voiced his annoyance at this discovery, and, in response, Obama’s willing media slaves have rushed to that individual’s defence. Mr. Obama (who is, of course, whiter than any driven snow) has added his ‘pennyworth just for effect.
  
  BTW, shortly afterwards a fire occurred at Trump Towers in New York; the place where the ‘bugging’ apparently occurred. Coincidence? Not sure yet, but I DO know of a bridge that is for sale should you be interested, with a free Tui thrown in for good measure…
