Regarding Hager and Stephenson’s hit-job on the SAS and the NZDF’s Chief of Defence Force (General Keating) comprehensive explanation yesterday that discredited Hager’s and Stephenson’s claims. Note that the Defence chief talked about the SAS being involved in a different village called Tirgiran and has geo-coordinate proof.

I think Hager and Stephenson’s incorrect account (of alledging the SAS attacked two villages called Khak Khuday Dad and Naik) is due to them being “had” by the villagers of these two places.

The Defence Chief mentioned I the press conference yesterday that when there are coalition strikes, it’s not uncommon for Afghan villagers to make “claims”. He didn’t elaborate much further, but it seems to me this is what happened. Stpehenson has stated that he never went to those two villages in the book (neither had Hager), instead he met villages representatives somewhere else in Afghanisatn and they told him “their story”.

Now of course Stephenson had written comprehensively a few years ago about “botched SAS raids” so presumably when this opportunity to meet some unhappy villagers arose claiming they had been attacked, he must have (or wanted to) put 2 + 2 together to give him the lottery win to back up his previous narratives. Hey presto this became the basis of “Hit and Run”. (It could be case that the villagers were actually attacked but possibly on a different occasion? If so and judging by the alleged damage and casualties perhaps they were attacked by Afghan forces (maybe with US assistance), but the villagers conflated their story once gullible guilt-ridden journalists like Stephenson became involved)??

So I think Stephenson, Hager and Deorah Manning (doning a full burka) MUST go to meet these villagers in their real villages of Khak Khuday Dad and Naik to verify the villager’s claims. Oh and don’t expect any protection from the “killer” SAS or NZDF, yup just go yourselves since they know what’s best.

Despite being discredited yesterday I see Hager is still calling for an inquiry. Oh yeah let’s definitely have an inquiry allright. Let’s have an inquiry into the collusion between Hager, Stephenson and human rights lawyer on how they got it so wrong and how they went about colluding to make their Hit job on the NZDF/SAS.

Perhaps there might be a phrase for this, something like Dirty Advocacy Journalism or something?

Then perhaps as a result I wonder if the NZDF could sue Hager, Stepenson and now Deborah Manning for demafation? These turkeys were claiming that the SAS sought “revenge” and were complicit in “war crimes”, when nothing could be further from the truth – the SAS are professional and would do no such thing. The Defence Chief stated yesteray their were lawyers present during the sAS raid on Tirgiran village to ensure all was above board.

Finally a brickbat for the MSM today, Radio NZ’s Benedict Collins had an awefully biased news peice on Morning Report ignoring Hager and Stepenson being proved wrong and instead concentrated on alledged civilan casualties and even linked that (incorrectly) to the two wrong villages in Hager’s book called Khak Khuday Dad and Naik. I wonder if such sloppy reporters like him should be sued for defamation also, when it is perfectly clear what Benedict Collins wrote about was nothing more than pro-Hager spin?

  Mind you perhaps the likes of Benedict Collins isn’t to blame, I see Hager is now spinning anything the Defence Chief said yesterday to spuriously link it back to Hager’s book (eg Defence Chief said SAS only fired 2 bullets at Tirgiran village to “vindicate” Hager/Stepensons claims that the SAS were firing!

  If it comes down to a credibility contest between Nicky Hager and Lt Gen Tim Keating, I’m going with the latter, and it’s not even close. Keating wins in a landslide, as Hager’s previous agenda-driven, politically motivated books precede him.
  
  I had to laugh yesterday when I heard Hager quoted as saying that NZDF has to prove his allegations wrong. Has Hager never heard of the presumption of innocence? If proof is required, it is up to Hager and Stephenson to provide proof beyond a reasonable doubt that what they are alleging actually happened. At the moment they can’t even place the alleged SAS “war criminals” in the alleged town where the alleged “war crimes” took place.
  
  Keep up the good work Lt Gen Keating, and all those under your command. It’s great to know that New Zealand is in such reliable hands.

    In a court, yes, but that is not the purpose of an enquiry. Instead, they try and discover what happened, on the balance of probabilities. And, in theory, and at face value Hager and Stephenson’s claims at least merit consideration for an independent enquiry.
    
    However, as per Hager’s challenge, whether he stated or implied it, it is impossible to disprove a negative! Hence the NZDF have, rightly, said that it is impossible to rule out the possibility of civilian casualties. Of course that is teh case, nothing could or should be ruled out in, including in a dynamic situation like armed conflict.
    
    Contrast that, though, with the sheer arrogance and hubris of Stephenson’s statement, in reply to NZDF responses:
    
    “We’re absolutely confident we’re right, no question about it.”
    
    The information came from “multiple, multiple sources”, Stephenson said.
    
    In a statement sent to media on Sunday night, the authors say it’s “actually impossible that the story is wrong”.
    
    “The NZDF press release is simply incorrect and implausible. To be true, it would require an identical raid by identical forces, using identical helicopters, on identical targets at the same time,” the statement says.

    Really?! (justified adverb!). No chance your sources are wrong/mistaken/a source of malevolently intended propaganda/your “corroboration” is mistaken? None whatsoever?!     Corporate can only sue for defamation if pecuniary loss is shown. AFAIK Government agencies and the like cannot be sued for defamation. NZDF could possibly sue via individuals but the Solicitor General would need to concur and probably take the case on.

Surely not. TVNZ news outlet indicted by Broadcasting Standards Authority for putting the boot into Israel over Gaza. It has been established that their news room of circa 230 employees seemed to infer that the Israel presence was illegal,in fact the news broadcast was “FAKE NEWS”. One would have thought, that a taxpayer funded Television company with 670 employees could justify their existence. Of course not so long ago they were caught allowing the Liebour Party to hold political meetings in taxpayer owned buildings.

I find it interesting that there has been very little discussion on Kiwiblog, and how quickly the MSM buried the story of the Jewish man arrested for making “Anti-Semitic” bomb hoaxes here in NZ. I wonder if it is because mant people on here consider it an inconvenient fact or in the case of lefties, who follow what I call the “Susan Devoy” doctrine that only White Men can be guilty.

  They are hardly a Jewish false flag operation if the individuals are not acting in concert. Nor is it for any particular purpose if disparate individuals are involved.
  
  As to the psychological issue in play for them as individuals and whether one can identify a common reason these people are doing this, quite another issue than playing politics.

        You will have to ask others about their perspective.
        
        As a general comment, an isolated loner using a weapon to hurt others, and an individual (of a minority) alienated against society have something in common.

So an anecdote told to me by a couple of staff sergeants in the US air-force from their time in Afghanistan.
A group of US troops got “mislaid” after an incident.
The group called in for an extraction and were advised that there would be nothing available for sometime and they would need to make their own way out.
Shortly after they called for help, a group of NZ SAS soldiers arrived, looking scruffy, unkempt but completely disciplined. These SAS soldiers then escorted the lost troops to the nearest US camp, restocked and then disappeared again.
They didn’t want thanks, they said that they were just doing their job.
The US troops there in Afghanistan were always pleased to see our boys, they were highly respected and disciplined.
Another Anecdote:
While up in the north of Israel I had the opportunity to meet up with some UN peacekeepers that were based up there.
Apparently there was also a group of Kiwi soldiers there with the UN at the time as well.
So the story goes that there was a border scuffle between the Israel defense force and a group of Lebanese border patrol. Each group claiming that the other had breached the border. Everything was looking like going pear shaped, threats were being made, weapons pointed and safety’s off, then the two Kiwi soldiers arrived, unarmed, in uniform but without protective vests or anything.
Apparently they are held in so much respect over there as being completely impartial, that both sides backed off and the story I heard was they both headed back to camp with their heads down and their tails between their legs.
And that is the reason why we have soldiers. NZ are the real world’s peacekeepers.

  Sure, no doubt the Kiwis have made a mistake or two. Shit happens in war, but fanning up a mistake for some narcissistic political goals is incredible destructive.

In New Zealand there are only about 500 Ahhmadiyya members .

This man can hardly be said to speak for a Muslim population of 50 to 60 000.

Well the pain these allegations must be causing the O’Connell Family is the main reason that I want these two low life’s to pay for. If you look back when police raided Hager’s home over Dirty Politics and he went off about his Daughter being alone and harassed by the Police, well now he finds it all right to cause distress to this brave soldier’s family and thinks nothing of it. If proved that this book has deceived the public I for one want his blood.

  I hate to correct you Happychappy, but the brave young soldier killed by the Taliban in Afghanistan was Lt Tim O’Donnell (not O’Connell):
  
  Linton-based Lieutenant O’Donnell received a Distinguished Service Decoration award in the 2008 New Year’s Honours for his services as a platoon commander in East Timor between November, 2006 and, May, 2007.
  
  On April 5, 2007, his platoon encountered a crowd of about 1000 Fretilin Party supporters returning from an election rally in Dili.
  
  The crowd, fearing attacks from opposition political supporters, had halted on the outskirts of Manatuto.
  
  While the platoon secured a safe route, United Nations police began moving the Fretilin supporters across a bridge toward Manatuto, despite having been requested not to do so.
  
  The crowd was ambushed by about 600 opposition supporters who threw rocks and fired steel darts and arrows.
  
  The police escort was forced to withdraw, which left the Fretilin supporters stranded on the bridge.
  
  Lieutenant O’Donnell intervened in the attack, which meant that his platoon came under attack and had to fire warning shots and aimed shots against their assailants.
  
  His platoon pushed back the attackers and secured a route around Manatuto for the Fretilin supporters, who safely navigated the town without loss of life or serious injury.
  
  Lieutenant O’Donnell graduated from Officer Cadet School in December 2005 into the Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment and was posted to 1 RNZIR.
  
  In 2008 he was posted to Burnham.
  
  My thoughts and aroha are with the O’Donnell family as their grief at losing a son and brother has been reawakened. A former staff member of mine was Tim’s aunt, and I am told the family is devastated at his death being used for such a political attack. I sometimes wonder how Hager sleeps at night.

        We already have an apprentice-ship system in place and that could be easily expanded, and with Health and Safety Guide lines will make scaffolding much more secure.
        
        All Boy Scouts, and Girl Guides, starting in Cubs and Brownies, are taught how to do knots and lashings, for their bivouacs, rafts and etc.

Interesting – Media has been reporting Wellington Electricity has been running at a loss ever since Vector sold out to that Hong Kong guy who seems to have a liking for owning lines companies (he also owns the lines companies serving London and a big chunk of England which he purchased off the Frogs several years ago – I doubt that the Frogs would let him own the Paris network). Presumably he could not care less as long as he can depreciate it as much as he can get away with and grow the capital value. This is the advantage of a company with no pesky shareholders expecting a divvy. It is reported IRD has had a nosey but so far seems not to have found any issues.

        Teina Pora is somewhat undeserving because he was arrested during the attempt to procure a reward with information he knew to be false. In fact this had serious ramifications with Rewa going on to commit many more rapes. Pora could not be held responsible here, rather the disgraceful police work. But there are and must be consequences for such egregious deception. Foetal alcohol syndrome was not a factor in his crimes or confession. The courts are no more correct in this than in, for example, supporting the first Lundy conviction with clearly false statements about driving times.         No. Irrespective of the fact that, yes, the cops should have taken it into account (indeed, some within in the force did, I think)
        
        …the fact that Pora was greedy, dishonest and stupid enough, FAS and all, to try and mislead them is the reason a chain of events were set in motion that sent him to prison for twenty odd years. Hence “he was least deserving compensee of any but the biggest winner”. But then as Clint Eastwood said in Unforgiven “‘Deserving’ ain’t got nothin’ to do with it” 🙂
        
        Now, as your empathy seems to stretch to the disabled like Pora, and those with Downs Syndrome – and good on you for that – but you have little or none for, say, Muslims, I’d suggest you’ll just have to accept the fact that others may see it differently.         No. But here’s the thing – FAS is not a free pass for committing a crime, nor for acting dishonestly, and trying to deceive the police in the course of their inquiries into a awful rape and murder. Yes, it should have been taken into account when weighing the credibility of Pora’s supposed confession. Maybe it was, or at least it was acknowledged he was a (non-technical yet accurate term) “moron”. Nonetheless, as I was at times at his age, as you were too, but to a much greater extent, Pora acted like a moron…and consequences, some of his making, accrued.

The Devin Nunes ( Chair of the House Intelligence Committee ) story has got really weird. Last week he announced that an unnamed source revealed to him that some members of the Trump transition team were caught up in surveillance and that their names were improperly “unmasked”. He briefed Trump on this and then held a press conference without advising other members of his committee , which upset the Democrats. Trump then cited this as vindication of his “wiretap claims”.
Nunes has now admitted that he was on the Whitehouse grounds in an annex the night before he briefed Trump but says he needed to be there so he could access a secure facility to examine the classified documents he had been given by what he now says was an Intelligence Community source. There is a secure facility on the Hill and he could also have gone to the FBI, NSA or other places but would have been logged in. He says no one from the Administration knew he was on the grounds of the Whitehouse.
The simplest explanation is normally the right one and that has to be that the Whitehouse was the source of the information Nunes cited. He certainly looks like he is carrying water for Trump and it is hard to see him keeping the Intelligence Committee job.
The comparisons with the Watergate cover up are becoming clearer and the Nixon white house was a fairly tight ship. The Trump administration much more leaky in every way. Interesting to see where this goes but I can see a movie at some stage with Rowan Atkinson playing the Nunes character. Peter Sellers would also be good but he is not feeling well.

        Hmm, that seems to be it. If it is seems to be qualifying an adjective, then that is because that adjective is the copula, with the intransitive verb sometimes written, but at the very least implied.
        
        So “Very clever, Maggy”, while colloquially acceptable is grammatically incorrect as a sentence, because every sentence must have a verb. Therefore it is properly stated as
        
        “You (subject noun) are (intransitive verb) very (adverb) clever (adjectival copula), Maggy (vocative noun)”.

I’m sick of idiots (dotcom, michael tavares, branson) coming over and telling NZers how to live in their own country. 2. Cows do cause some environmental issues that need improving, but they also provide sustenance , protein , food and life. Marijuana and wine are recreational drugs. It’s pretty arrogant to claim the two are interchangeable. 3. Branson is a billionaire who owns an airline flying the wealthy to holiday destinations. Hardly the most environmentally friendly business. Do they serve milk, steak and icecream on virgin? Being a billionaire business owner may not pollute the rivers but it doesn’t prevent hunger and famine either. I’m not a farmer. But I’m sick of people putting the boot into our agriculture sector as if they alone are responsible for the worlds ills.

Cannot believe the critics on cricinfo saying Kane Williamson should have declared earlier:

1. To win, you have to first score more runs than the opposition. We only overtook their first innings just before stumps last night.

2. You will never get easier runs than in the first innings when they have bowled over 120 overs, their bowlers are stuffed and the shine is off the second new ball. Contrast that with a run chase on a fifth day pitch with their bowlers fresh and with a new ball.

3. If we fail to bowl them out because of bad weather, then that is what it is. You can’t change that. Instead, control what you can – including getting a good lead, maybe even enough to only have to bat once, when you have the chance

4. Maybe we should have scored faster, or, in particular Santner. However, as Williamson was set and our best option to accelerate the scoring while he was still there, and the very good saffer quicks were looking to restrict rather than take wickets, it was maybe ok to score at the rate we did in the first session We accelerated as we went on, and a lead of 170 is very good. Although 250 would have been ideal,as, once they overtake our score, the time needed to win “doubles” – for every run they score we have to match it in a run chase.

  The issue is having to bowl the other team out twice, we have to bowl the Saffies out in little more than day (for a second time) to win and the longer the game goes on the easier it becomes to do this.

        I used it in two senses, firstly those who identify themselves as the favoured of God in the religious sense, which Jews did first as a national myth, then Christian and then Moslem. Second I used it in the sense of dominance in government.
        
        Related to this have been arguments for the supremacy of the white race in progress of humanity, and cultural order (if they mean the modern democratic society, comparatively recent – of the Christian religion well designed by Jews, at least originally).
        
        PS the Jewish state does not identify itself (well not yet) as “chosen” (the religious would reject that if it did). That concept is historic, and to the extent that it continues does so with the faith of the people wherever they are.

  There are others, Zionists seeking a nation, so Jews can have a homeland of their own like other ethnic peoples/cultural groups, yet seeking to brands this nation in ways they would call discriminatory when a (liberal polity advocating) minority.
