The housing crisis in Australia is caused by jumbo loads of immigrants arriving in Australia.
Young Australians are unable to afford a house.
Aus are getting 200,000 immigrants a year and New Zealand 70,000.

  It is not correct that the high house prices are caused by immigration; there have been historical episodes of high population growth in past decades where house prices remained affordable. The difference is Agenda 21 and the Councils enacting it, which makes housing supply unresponsive to demand.
  
  Dozens of US cities that haven’t fallen for this, have grown at a rate of as much as 20% per decade of late, without house price inflation. They have built a lot of freakin’ houses, and the scale economies tend to make them even cheaper, if anything. Same thing for the scale economies in infrastructure development.
  
  I don’t agree with mass immigration with no standards, but it is wrong to blame that for house prices. The house prices would be a problem anyway; many UK cities have had zero growth or even population loss, at times since their Town and Country Planning system was enacted in 1947, but their housing has remained systemically unaffordable. Don’t underestimate the potential for central planning to stuff up market supply to this extent.

    There is no requirement to make all the rules they are making .Councillors are sucked in by bureaucrats and continue to make more and more unnecessary rules that beget more rules.I am all for smoothing processes.
    I suggest you read what Dick Smith says.
    The thing with immigration is that no one has agreed to a sensible plan that would see better managed immigration.
    Bringing in 70,000 a year is nuts and while some people want to kill this country with population I think one would find there are many kiwis who are very unhappy with the numbers diluting the culture of this country.

      I am familiar with what Dick Smith is saying – he just doesn’t regard “doing growth properly” as a solution to house prices, he wants less, or no growth. His argument is from the perspective of opposition to growth, period, on eco grounds. He is not sufficiently expert on urban economics to have realised that urban planning can create housing unaffordability even with minimal growth. But we built enough houses for the baby-boomer generation, which was a BIG population increase, to keep the prices affordable – and we had some immigration on top of that.

      Yes, but the supply of housing is what makes or breaks this. When this has not been sabotaged, low interest rates just make it easier than ever for people to buy homes at roughly constant prices, just like low interest rates boosts the turnover of new cars and TV’s without the prices going up.
      
      It is also worth noting that first home buyers back in the day, got artificially low interest rate loans from the government, and other subsidies, and this did not affect house prices.

    Property bubbles have been caused in several world cities by money pouring out of China.
    
    Phil, when you mention “Agenda 21” am I correct in assuming that this is a reference to an international call for “sustainable development” and that you are attributing the Auckland housing bubble to zoning that restricts or slows housing from taking up agricultural land?
    
    Regardless, the British Columbia tax on foreigners shows how the Auckland bubble could be quickly brought under control.
    
    In the meantime, banksters will be opposed to any popping of the bubble. They are heavily exposed through mortgage lending.

      Jack5; I do not believe that Vancouver’s housing market has been restored to anything like normality by the foreign buyer tax. Sure the implementation of this tax has “had an effect” but even if this effect proves to be permanent, it might mean Vancouver will have a house price median multiple of 8.5 instead of 10.5. Yippee skip.
      
      Give it time, and I predict that the median multiple will resume its creepage upwards and we won’t see even the current respite becoming permanent. There will of course be a total system crash one day, which will bring the median multiple down further, but unlikely to be anywhere near the 3 to 4 that is a mark of truly affordable housing markets, which is always a consequence of freedom to add non-urban land to the urban economy as required.
      
      Yes, you sum it up exactly: “…zoning that restricts or slows housing from taking up agricultural land”. Restrictions on height and density are a red herring, nowhere is this alone responsible for a systemically unaffordable housing market. As long as you can continue to sprawl, it does not matter how low density you have, rural land is so cheap. There are US cities with a median multiple of 3 where the average section size in new developments is something like 2/3 of an acre.
      
      By the way, it is a nonsense myth that NZ ever had low density sprawl “like the US”, let alone that Auckland or any NZ city is today “low density sprawling” after decades of misguided infill development. I do think US cities have absurdly low density suburbs due to perverse incentives that we don’t have; but NZ suburban development was almost never of 1/4 acre sections as a norm, and was always much closer to the European post-WW2 suburban norms of 1/8 of an acre sections. This size is demonstrably “about right”, what most buyers prefer, as it still enabled decades of systemic affordability in housing. Planning quotas assuming significant supply coming from housing units tighter than this, will always create a kind of black hole in “urban land rent”.
      
      Prices are “revealed preferences”; the planners think they have a handle on “surveyed preferences” to justify what they are doing, but the prices show they are wrong.

      I was pressed for time earlier. Typing this from the print edition now:

  There are really two issues here:
  
  1) It’s a bloody lie. These riots happen with or without Trump saying stuff. This time they’re just using Trump as an excuse.
  
  2) Even if this was sparked by Trump’s comments, so what? In a civilized society we talk about stuff, we hold protests. We don’t set stuff on fire and assault people – be that UC Berkeley or down-town Sweden.
  
  If Muslim immigration results in a society where people can no longer use their words then it is no longer a reasonably civil society.
  
  There is nothing magic about Swedish soil. Import third-world criminals and they don’t become Swedish. Instead Sweden just turns into the third world. And that goes for anywhere else too: some UK cities are already turning Muslim hell-holes.

    Well Rinkby has a population of 16000 or so. Scale that to the whole population of Sweden (6 million) and it’s the equivalent of having 1125 riots.
    
    Or maybe scaling it to, say just the population of Auckland (1.2 million). That would be 225 riots.

There is absolutely nothing in their holy writ and church fathers writings and histories that could be argued to provide excuses and cover. No-one is even trying to argue that this might be the case. Quite the contrary. Christianity is probably the outstanding source of moral light on this; contrast the norms in ancient Greece or Rome.
  
  On the other hand, Islam? You can’t “rock with scandal”, an institution that is riddled from its outset with moral grey areas.

Is that long enough? I despise corruption and the damage it brings to any society within which it flourishes. However, the maximum is 7 years. These guys fought it all the way. Should the sentence have been closer to the maximum, to discourage others?

  That’s Parliament’s job when legislating the maximum. A sentencing judge takes a starting point and considers aggravating and mitigating factors and arrives at a sentence in the interests of justice all round. I’d suggest that in this case 5 years (and 6 months in one defendant’s case) is “relatively” close to the maximum.

  You could argue it’s how Fox Media used other MSM to give them publicity and carve out their niche in an endless outrage-cycle of the news reporters becoming the news makers. Despite the glaring contradiction that the critics of PC are also the ones who do lots of whining about the “unfair/unjust” system. And you are right – as a proponent of reality TV, Trump knows how to make it work. There is an emotional pay off for his supporters and that’s what keeps them hooked. And those who oppose him too, so as you say, it is a self-generating news cycle all of its own!
  
  Will be intriguing to see what Trump’s achievements and failures will be come 2020…and whether it will even matter to his re-election chances!

    I think Trump is observing the Roger Douglas / Machiavelli maxim that if you have a program that is unpopular, do everything straight away, don’t proceed timidly and incrementally. Your opponents will make just as much noise either way, but your own believed-in reforms stand a chance of working and naysaying your opponents, if you do them early and properly.
    
    I don’t claim to predict success, not like Ted Malloch who talks about Trump ending up on Mt Rushmore, he believes in him so deeply. I am merely looking on in disbelief wondering where all this is going to go. But I like the general pushback against the PC Left’s institutional hegemony and I wish it success. Including in education and science institutions.
    
    I would also say that I believe that Trump is not a potential right-wing totalitarian dictator, this is lefty hyperventilation. Nor is he a racist or half the stuff he is charged with by the left. He could be plain wrong about some policy choices, not a lot differently to, say, Robert Muldoon.

      I don’t think Trump is right wing at all. It is not clear what he really believes in apart from an unshakeable belief that he is correct about everything. And he is right about some stuff. The US does need a more sensible tax code and everyone needs less regulation. Those are things he understands. Most things he does not understand, particularly about governing the US.
      He is revealing a way of going about things that is very worrying to many Americans and to people in the rest of the world having to deal with a potentially rogue ( ie unpredictable and a bit nutty ) superpower.
      
      How the hell could any president watch a short interview on Fox with the sort of Swedish spokesman likely to be on Fox and then incorporate that in a widely televised speech that is damaging to Sweden and to his relationship with an important friend of the US all without consulting his secretary of State. Even worse his garbled delivery made it sound as though he had just invented Bowling Green Malmo.

The reports show that the fall in the Real Estate Institute of NZ’s lower quartile selling prices, which became evident in many parts of the country in December, intensified and spread to most parts of the country in January, with the falls in some places being significant.

The REINZ’s lower quartile price (the price point that 25% of sales would be below and 75% would be above) declined in nine regions (Northland, Auckland, Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Taranaki, Wellington, Canterbury, Central Otago/Lakes, Otago and Southland in January compared to December, and continued to rise in only three, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu/Whanganui and Nelson/Marlborough.

Voters will love it. But the super-salaried stars of the electronic media, both Left and Right, will squeal and squeal.

The whole idea of super salaries to get “super people” is bullshit. Talent is widespread, as history has shown again and again.

Super salaries and board fees are a rort. Senior executives and directors get big payouts, and external salary consultants in turn can sting organisations with high fees.

Read the management texts they give MBA-type students. They will report research that salary is only one factor in job attraction. The MBA’s seem to jettison these findings when it comes to their own remuneration.

        If you want it put in simple terms, to understand the modern Left, everything works according to a narrative, not facts or evidence. Unfortunately the “mainstream right” has forgotten about the importance of facts and evidence in policy-direction debates. A major reason for this is that most people who end up standing for office on the mainstream right, are just decent successful citizens, business people, professionals, whatever – they have never studied politics and often don’t even know their history. On the other hand, their opponents have saturated themselves in their narrative and always appear to have a mastery of their subject.

        They sure try to set the agenda/”raise consciousness” – which they have to, because unless the (constructed) dialectic paradigm is imposed, most people carry on oblivious to the alleged injustice. But if you really are suffering injustice, you seldom need some outsider, academic or media personality to point it out to you! But there comes a point at which fatigue sets in, especially if the alleged injustice is not that unjust. I mean, where trans-gender people have to pee? Is that the best academia and the media have got?! And while Trump may have been blowing a dog whistle, it is not racist to take an interest in your country’s immigration policy. It deserves to be considered and debated just like any other.

        You may be interested to know, PhilBest, the Sunday after Trump’s election some Trotskyites were proselytising outside our local shopping mall. Was interesting to have a chat with them, “permanent revolution…dialectic materialism” etc.
        
        However, what was fascinating was their scorn for identity politics. A bit like Chris Trotter (who is an old-fashioned socialist, not a Trotskyite), they considered obsessions over gender, race/ethnicity and sexual orientation were a distraction from the real problem of economic oppression.
        
        Which highlights the point, just as the USA got it wrong with their analysis of the USSR, China, and Vietnam in the Cold War, the radical left is not a monolith carefully co-ordinating a sinister takeover (although some try). Instead, the thing most likely to derail them is not reactionaries like you, but supposed allies and their endless disputes over ideological purity. Well six years on and Christchurch has a wall… An eight million dollar waste of money.

Now please understand: I have no problems commemorating those that died. I lost a friend in the Chch EQ. But why don’t we do something a bit more useful than build a wall?

After the wars, communities built memorial halls all across NZ (and many other countries too). These are reminders of the fallen, but are also useful.

A sporting park, a swimming pool, etc etc would be fitting, but a wall is pointless.

That friend who died had close ties to hockey. I’m sure he’d rather see a hockey pitch – or any other useful community facility for that matter.

Personally I’d rather be remembered by something useful that keeps giving to society rather than just a wall that serves no function and is going to look like crap once the ferals start tagging it.

  I was in Christchurch when the earthquake struck. A man was killed just metres from me. I & others tried to dig him out but he likely died immediately. I am glad that his name will be recorded on a memorial that anyone can (and will) routinely see and access.
  
  Happy to see individuals also remembered in other places that were important to them personally (like your hockey example). But it’s also good to have one central place where all the names are recorded.
  
  This wall is no different to the war memorials that pretty much each small town in NZ has, where names of the fallen are recorded.

The United States is now in the extraordinary situation that the liberal/progressive/left is allied with the deep state against democracy. The liberal/progressive/left are lobbying for the impeachment of a president who has committed no impeachable offense. The neoconservatives have stated their preference for a deep state coup against democracy. The media obliges with a constant barrage of lies, innuendos and disinformation. The insouciant American public sits there sucking its thumb.

This is what a lot of conservatives don’t get. Perhaps its because they don’t think there is a “deep state” or they don’t understand what or who it is. Who knows, but fact is, many to most conservatives only ever talk about what the lefties are doing, and never ever talk about who leaked for instance, those Flynn conversations. Which was treason, just like Obama and Soros’ actions are treason, possibly even worse, because what high-level security clearance do you have to hold before you can access NSA records of phone conversations of people like Flynn? And how egregious is the breach to leak those to a reporter – conversations of elected high officials of your own country?

Wow. That’s going to be popular. I can’t wait for the lefty squealing on that one, I hope its loud, because the more they squeal, the more the ordinary people are going to be looking sideways at them and thinking: whose side are you on?

        I note the dog was called Snuffles. As a sufferer of chronic hayfever I feel offended. Are they making fun of me? In any future remake I demand they change the name of the vicious dog to something unoffensive. Any suggestions?

The Maorification of Radio New Zealand is progressing steadily.

In the 10 pm news today, a reporter talking about the day’s events of the quake commemorations in Christchurch signed off: “…. in Otautahi…”

This is one of the results of the agreement signed six months ago between Radio New Zealand and the network of Maori radio stations – Te Whakaruruhau O Nga Reo Irirangi Maori.

The deal between the taxpayer-owned national asset and the Maori group, was marked by a handshake and hongi between leftist politician Willie Jackson, who chairs the Maori network, and the chief executive of Radio NZ, Paul Thomson.

Taxpayers now contribute not only to Maori-only broadcasting, but to a part-Maori national broadcasting group.

Well done Willie Jackson, you’ve succeeded with a strategy: “What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is half-mine.”

The Left wins, too.

Long gone are the days when its purpose was just to seek amnesty for political prisoners round the world.

Now, for example, it attacks Brexit for what it alleges is a surge in hate crime.

Think carefully when Amnesty International Aotearoa New Zealand Incorporated tries to tie you up with a continuing donations plan.
