    What I’ve come to admire about his modus operandi is the way he understands the media cycle and that yesterday’s “atrocity” is soon ameliorated by today’s atrocity. He knows that the news media are always desperate for the next story and that lefties are desperate for the next outrage to get good and “virtuous” about.
    
    But he’s also smart enough to know he can put the news media and the lefties in a box. What happens when the next – and sadly inevitable – terrorist incident happens? You could hear the MSM floundering and grasping for air for nearly 24 hours yesterday when the reports from Canada were of 3 masked gunmen shouting “Allu Akbar” as they desperately tried to spin then bury spin the story until it conveniently became a lonely white guy.
    
    He’s got all the lefties defending Islam right now, so when it happens they’ve got nowhere to go. He can always say “I acted to protect people – what are you virtue signalling cretins doing?”
    
    He’s a smart, smart, operator, surrounded by smart, smart, people.

      (And I use ‘passed through Congress’ in a strict sense, Gabby, as thus far he hasn’t NEEDED to pass anything through Congress.)
      
      But it is eye-opening just how much bile he is attracting from folk who were so bedazzled by Obama (remember that ludicrous Nobel Peace Prize he ‘won’?) that they overlook the fact that the sum total of his 8 years in office was ‘We got Bid Laden’…

Before Judith Collins looks into petrol co margins , she might like to look at the amount of tax the gummint puts on a litre.

“When you last bought petrol, 67.284 cents per litre was collected by the government as fuel excise (excluding GST). Motorists are charged GST on the petrol excise, which amounts to a tax on a tax. The AA has called for the GST to be removed – a move that would reduce prices by 10 cents per litre and help relieve the financial burden on New Zealanders.”

  I would like to hope that the minister also looks at why the petrol companies do not show the price for 98 octane fuel, which is invariably up to 30 cents dearer than the advertised 91 octane.
  Many engines are now much smaller and efficient but perform best on the higher octane fuel as result of these efficiencies.

      I tend to use 98 almost exclusively but it’s probably an affectation. When forced to use 95 in areas without a 98 available there’s no real difference in performance or economy.
      
      Both cars I regularly run (VAG units) have stickers recommending a minimum of 95; only one is a turbo which i would think would potentially benefit more.
      
      Most Japanese cars seem to be tuned to run on 91 which isn’t a bad idea, certainly a bit cheaper.

    There isn’t any 98 Octane is there. Almost invariably servos have 91 and 95. 98 is just about avgas. 95 is 9cents dearer than 91 here.

        The very latest large BP have 4 outlets, Diesel, 91, 95, and 98. It used to be three with 95 OR 98, but I found a few with both.

    I have professional expertise in this. If you are going to worry about using 98 or 91 the only time it really matters is when the air is warm/hot. Car engines are designed to run in ambient temperatures up to 50°C so typical 20-25°C is no big deal (maybe reconsider if getting up to 30-35°C), and in winter they are more than happy. The engines can deal with lower octane by simply retarding spark a little more (modern engines do this on the fly using maps based on air temperature, manifold pressure and also feedback from knock sensors), running at part-throttle also reduces the problem in hot weather if you are really nervous – we typically only use full throttle about 0.1% of time so it has very little impact on driving.
    
    In short 91 is fine and given 10% lower price it is more economic than 98. Exhortations to use 98 are principally car company arse covering.

      Thanks, UN – very useful information. You didn’t mention possible fuel-usage variations incurred in using different octane ratings. Is is true or a fallacy that – all other factors being equal – a driver will cover fewer km per litre using 95 or 98 instead of 91? If 95 or 98 would take you further than 91 using the same litreage of fuel, would that detract from your suggested 10% cost saving through using 91?

        higher octane fuels do allow for slightly more efficient operation (due to running with slightly more spark advance), but the overall difference is unlikely to be more than a few percent. With a 10-15% cost difference between them it is safe bet that 91 will have lower cost per km.

  Leave it as it is. If they remove gst on fuel, the lefties will come out and want gst removed on food etc.
  Its one of the cheapest taxes to administer WITHOUT any exemptions. Suck it up and save your money by not using so much fuel thus saving yourself the gst.

        Not sure if they mean that GST should not be levied on the excise tax portion rather than on the whole amount. Companies (and any business) would object if, for example, the GST was replaced with an addition to the excise tax. GST inputs are able to be claimed against outputs, excise tax cannot.

    One way around it might be to charge GST on the retail price and then add on the excise value. That way GST is still charged but only on the retail cost not inclusive of the excise tax.
    
    Won’t happen though – governments aren’t known for relinquishing set tax bases – goes against the grain

  The problem with petrol prices is that the big fuel companies have to match Gull everywhere they are, which is about 60% of the market. That means that they are recovering the lost margin by gouging Wellington and the South Island.

  I’m sure the petrol companies would support that particular campaign. It’s principal purpose from their perspective would be to deflect attention away from their price gouging.
  
  You need to ask why the main petrol companies collude on prices and charge a ridiculous margin. Why, for example, can Gull charge approx 15 cents / litre less than Z, Mobil etc?

    They don’t need to collude, basic economic theory strongly supports the fact that competing entities selling an identical product will end up with very similar pricing. Collusion is an illusion.
    
    Gull charge less because they import directly and have a lower purchase cost in many cases.
    
    The old mechanism the various fuel companies used was that all supplies basically came through the NZ Refinery which sold (with I believe some minor volume related discounts) to all shareholders at the same price. That price was relatively high and the fuel companies marked it up only reasonably and their actual direct profits were never particularly high. So any investigation looking at the fuel companies only showed that there were no monopoly (or oligopoly) profits being made, indeed the profit levels often seemed relatively low.
    
    Where all the money was being made was at the refinery end and that profit was feed back to the shareholders (the fuel companies) with a few public shareholders sharing in the windfall. Gull as a direct importer has done an end run around this setup.
    
    However I doubt that huge profits are being made anywhere in the chain these days. As long as there is real competition prices will tend to fall to a reasonably low level.

      NZRC is a tolling refinery. It never owns or sells product. It just processes it for a fixed fee per litre. That fee will move depending on the regional refining margin but us basically the same for each customer. The importers own the crude and the refined product that flows from it. There are complex rules and models about what crude they can bring and the type and volumes of product they get out.
      
      About 30% of fuel is imported so Gull doesn’t have a significant product cost advantage. You could argue they are disadvantaged because they are a price taker and no capacity to make their own. Their niche is based on low price perception and they are clearly successful.

      Silicon Valley got its start when the land supply was lightly regulated and cheap. Now it is some of the most exclusionary and NIMBYist land on the planet.
      
      There has been a phenomenon around since the late 1990’s with two acronyms that sum it up:

      GTT = Gone to Texas

The ex union members being appointed as candidates for Labour must send a warning to NZ voters that the Union influence is gathering pace and thy want to dictate policy if some how Labour can produce a miracle and become the Government after the next Election. They have already let slip that there will be rolling strike right up to the election so this will be the start of what you can expect if Labour achieve power.

Case in point, yesterday our beloved taxpayer funded “news” outlets, Radio New Zealand, funded by the taxpayer to the tune of $32,000,000, and TVNZ and untold amount,deliberately put the boot into the democratically elected Government of USA ,when they had the temerity to ban 109 people from 7 mentioned countries,for three months. Yet six of the goody two shoes countries,as depicted by the clown cue reader on TVNZ and the lying craven little pest on Radio New Zealand deliberately omitted the truth that the same holier than thou countries,have a permanent ban on Jewish People in ,any shape or form.Talk about selective morality, our so called “Main Scheme Media”are so much full of “Fake News ” makes one wonder what their true agenda really is.

      Spelling is always changing over the centuries, so when a kid spells something wrong they are not marked down. They are instead given extra marks for creative deconstruction and helping to move language along.
      
      Follow that up with a degree in bullshit studies which regards grammar as rules inflicted on society by the patriarchy and the sloppiness gets reinforced.

Czech cyber-attack: Russia suspected of hacking diplomats’ emails

Neovlivni.cz, a Czech investigative news site, said “thousands of files were downloaded” from the inboxes of Zaorálek and his under-secretaries in what it called the Czech Republic’s “biggest security scandal of recent years”.

Vlado Bizik, a cybersecurity expert with the Prague-based European Values thinktank, said the hack resembled another carried out against the Polish foreign ministry recently, also believed to be Russia’s handiwork.

“The Polish hack was perpetrated by a hard-to-detect Trojan horse,” he said. “Such sophisticated programmes are usually sponsored by state actors and Russia is the one which has the most to gain…

Russian hackers have been very busy lately. Even catching some of them doesn’t slow them down …

The latest episode occurred amid a protracted wrangle over an alleged Russian hacker, Yevgeniy Nikulin, currently being held in the Czech Republic while officials debate an extradition request from the US, which accuses him of breaking into three social media sites: Formspring, LinkedIn and Dropbox.

Now, before anyone accuses me of being “anti-Slavic”, let me remind the clueless that Czechs are Slavic, Poles are Slavic and my ancestry is Polish.

And what else are the Russians up to? Well, attacking their Slavic neighbours, the Ukrainians. They’ve been waiting for a Trump presidency just so they can properly get back to the business of invading, because right after Putin talked to Trump on Saturday (US time) the shelling began.

Ukraine clashes rage for third day, sparking EU concern

An AFP reporter saw the separatists shell the town of about 20,000 people with repeated rounds of Grad multiple rocket systems and artillery fire from the early morning.

“Right now, there is no power. We have not resolved problems with heating homes, and the gas pipe has been shattered,” local Ukrainian army unit spokeswoman Olena Mokrynchuk told AFP.

The town’s military administrator Freedon Vekua told AFP he was preparing for a possible evacuation of the town that sits just north of the rebels’ de facto capital of Donetsk because of the power outage.

Ukraine is struggling through freezing conditions in which temperatures drop to -20 degrees Celsius (-4 degrees Fahrenheit) at night.

If anyone still thinks the rebels are just Ukrainians who have taken up arms against their evil government, then I ask you this: Why haven’t they run out of fighters and ammunition by now? You’d think a war that has been dragging on this long without any support from the outside would have fizzled out by now.

That it hasn’t and that the “rebels” have arms such as grad rockets to shell a town shows that the rebels aren’t rebels – they are a Russian invasion. Wait till the Russians stop pretending they are invading and you’ll see just how fast they go through Ukraine.

      So for the current Govt. to continue they are going to need more support. I don’t particularly like Winston and NZ First policies but I would vote for them if it meant the other side were kept out.

    I don’t like Winston either, just like I didnt like Dunne but voted party lines. I think Winston Peters will have the 2nd biggest party in Parliament though come the end of the year.
    
    From what I am seeing around the traps, people are taking notice of what Trump has done and are asking why can’t we do that here? New Zealanders are sick of not having a say in the direction their country is heading.
    
    My prediction is a lot of Labour voters will switch to Winston this year, he makes the right noises about immigration. He will either be on the benches as a minor party to National or as the major party in a coalition with the Greens/Labour.

Daniel Horowitz explains how Trump’s “ban” is quite ordinary and matter-of-fact. It is based on existing law the Congress (including Democrats such as Pelosi, Kerry, and Hillary) voted for in 2002.

Trump’s executive order is so modest that the foundation of it is essentially existing law. That law was passed unanimously by both bodies of Congress in 2002. In fact, it garnered the support of 16 Democrat senators and 57 Democrat House members who are still serving in their respective bodies!

Following 9/11, Congress passed the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act, which addressed many of the insecurities in our visa tracking system. The bill passed the House and Senate unanimously. The bill was originally sponsored by a group of bipartisan senators, including Ted Kennedy and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. (F, 0%). Among other provisions, it restricted non-immigrant visas from countries designated as state sponsors of terror:

SEC. 306. RESTRICTION ON ISSUANCE OF VISAS TO NONIMMIGRANTS FROM COUNTRIES THAT ARE STATE SPONSORS OF INTERNATIONAL TERRORISM.

(a) IN GENERAL- No nonimmigrant visa under section 101(a)(15) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C.1101(a)(15)) shall be issued to any alien from a country that is a state sponsor of international terrorism unless the Secretary of State determines, in consultation with the Attorney General and the heads of other appropriate United States agencies, that such alien does not pose a threat to the safety or national security of the United States. In making a determination under this subsection, the Secretary of State shall apply standards developed by the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Attorney General and the heads of other appropriate United States agencies, that are applicable to the nationals of such states.

The directive to cut off non-immigrant visas from countries designated as state sponsors of terror is still current law on the books [8 U.S. Code § 1735]. Presidents Bush and Obama later used their discretion to waive the ban, but Trump is actually following the letter of the law — the very law sponsored and passed by Democrats — more closely than Obama did. Trump used his 212(f) authority to add immigrant visas, but that doesn’t take away the fact that every Democrat in the 2002 Senate supported the banning of non-immigrant visas.

Given that Trump has backed down on green card holders, his executive order on “Muslim countries” is essentially current law, albeit only guaranteed for 90 days!

The Greens and some Labour MP’s want compulsory Te Reo in all State Schools if they become the Government at the next Election. While I agree it should be part of our school curriculum for those who want to learn it I am against it being made compulsory. Our school children are finding it hard to comprehend Mathematics in our education at the moment so any resources should be used to target that.

Winston Peters has pledged to block ANZ Banking Group’s sale of UDC, the country’s biggest finance company, to a Chinese conglomerate, the web site, interest.co.nz, reports.

Regardless of whether Peters is right, UDC is an important company to NZ business, and has been one of the company’s major industrial lenders, and also a safe spot for folk to tuck away cash in bond investments.

Earlier today I predicted that Trumps COS, Priebus, will resign.

I received a few Downvotes.

I then announced who Trumps SCOTUS pick would be at 9:52 am.

I should like to point out that my source for both pieces of information is the same. I understand that Priebus has considered resigning, and has had to be talked out of it by Paul Ryan in the short term, but he is still considering it.

The same source has intimated that Trump wanted to include Green card holders in the ‘muslim ban’ and that Priebus’s comments on Meet The Press went against what Trump wanted, and that Trump feels angry about that.

Although he was generally well liked and respected his move to Labour has surprised many who were of the opinion that he has lost the plot and joined the wrong party. In fact it was obvious that the Labour Green Combination was considered to be too toxic for their vote.

He may not be the great white hope that Labour was expecting.

If he is standing for the election, Jackson will surely stand down from his Radio Live talkback show with Madame Mau.

Jackson has designs, too, on Radio NZ. A couple of months ago, Radio NZ’s chief executive, Paul Thomson, said Jackson and John Tamihere were in line to host a new afternoon weekday show.

In a guest post on Kiwiblog last April, Jackson whined about a study of Radio NZ by Maori-language Waatea: “Our evaluators determined that in the 12 week period only 0.1 percent of [Radio NZ] stories were Maori focussed.”

Jackson wants Radio NZ Maori news and programmes to increase to at least 15 per cent.

This is an old racist ploy by minorities: what’s mine is mine and what’s yours is mine, too.
