The fifth in an occasional series of great quotes from US Presidents.

Jimmy Carter, on having to sell his peanut farm into a blind trust because of pressure from Republicans that owning it would create conflicts of interest as President:

“Well, it was a hard decision for me to make and this is something that I’ve had to face. I’ve literally given up my own method of making a living here in Plains. But I don’t want any decision that I make as president to have any effect on my own income.”

Despite this in 1979 the Republicans spent six months investigating whether Carter still had any conflicts of interest. They went out of their way to make sure it was a Republican special prosecutor who they hired at the Department of Justice to tear everything apart, up and down through every peanut shell to try to find something, anything, scandalous in Jimmy Carter’s family peanut farm. It turned out there was nothing – well, apart from proving that Carter’s brother was a good ol boy (heck, Billy would have told them that if they’d just asked directly).

Contrast this pursuit of Carter with the Republican’s meek acceptance of Trump’s clearly egregious conflicts of interest.

I support the Republicans in a policy sense. But their consistent hypocrisy and disregard for political reasonableness and mutual respect means I cannot love them as a party.

  I’d suggest Carter’s 1979 “crisis of confidence” speech on energy was his most famous…and a fitting epitaph for the habitual micro-managing former governor of Georgia. Reagan solved the oil crisis with “Drill, baby, drill!”.

    I think Carter was too smart to be President, and spent most of his time in analysis paralysis when a more decisive character would have just charged ahead.
    
    That said, I also think Carter is a genuinely nice and generous man and his life and work after the Presidency has been exemplary.
    
    He may go down as one of the more ineffective Presidents, but perhaps the best ever ex-President.

Both JFK and LBJ kept a lot of women in the White House for extramarital affairs and both had set up early warning systems to alert them if/when their wives were nearby. Both were promiscuous and oversexed men.
      She was either naive or just pretended to not know about her husband’s many liaisons.

      A complete phony who would portray one picture of himself to public and very different in private e.g. Would be shown carrying his own luggage but the suitcases were always empty. He kept empty ones just for photo ops. He wanted people to see him as pious and a non-drinker but he and his family drank alcohol a lot! He had disdain for the Secret Service and was very irresponsible with the “football” with nuclear codes. He didn’t think it was a big deal and would keep military aides at a great distance. Often did not acknowledge the presence of Secret Service personnel assigned to serve him.
      She mostly did her own thing
      
      RONALD & NANCY REAGAN
      The real deal, moral, honest, respectful and dignified. They treated Secret Service and everyone else with respect and honor, thanked everyone all the time. He took the time to know everyone on a personal level.
      She was very nice but very protective of the President and the Secret Service was often caught in the middle. She tried hard to control what he ate. He would say to the agent, “Come on, you gotta help me out.” The Reagans drank wine during State dinners and special occasions only otherwise they shunned alcohol. The Secret Service could count on one hand the times they were served wine during family dinner. For all the fake bluster of the Carters, the Reagans were the ones who lived life as genuinely moral people.

        Two out of three above were hypocritical democrats. Why are we surprised at this. Continue forward and the worst philanderer was yet another democrat in Clinton. Do they go to a school in the states, to learn this or does it come naturally to the lefties?

        From a NZ perspective Carter was a petty and vindictive little man. Rob Muldoon wrote of Carter that he was a “peanut farmer from Georgia” and as a result Carter took offence and cancelled a Whitehouse visit and photo op. To one of the USA’s staunchest supporters?! Plus if Carter had got off his high horse he would have realised being described as a “farmer” is no insult. Hell, Muldoon’s mentor, Holyoake was one, as were Holland, Bolger, Shipley. Plus Muldoon, against every instinct he had about politics interfering in sports still backed Carter’s nonsensical boycott of the 1980 Olympics that achieved nothing but penalise our athletes

        A “moral” man but very odd, weird, paranoid. He had a horrible relationship with his family and was almost a recluse.
        She was quiet most of the time.
        
        GERALD & BETTY FORD
        A true gentlemen who treated the Secret Service with respect and dignity. He had a great sense of humor.
        She drank a lot!
        
        GEORGE H. & BARBARA BUSH
        Extremely kind and considerate, always respectful. Took great care in making sure the agents’ comforts were taken care of. They even brought them meals. One time she brought warm clothes to agents standing outside at Kennebunkport.
        He was the most prompt of the Presidents. He ran the White House like a well-oiled machine.
        She ruled the house and spoke her mind.
        
        BILL & HILLARY CLINTON
        Presidency was one giant party. Not trustworthy. He was nice mainly because he wanted everyone to like him but to him life is just one big game and party. Everyone knows about his sexuality.
        She is another phony. Her personality would change the instant cameras were near. She hated, with open disdain the military and Secret Service. She was another who felt people were there to serve her. She was always trying to keep tabs on Bill.
        
        GEORGE W. & LAURA BUSH
        The Secret Service loved him and Laura Bush. He was also the most physically in shape who had a very strict workout regimen. The Bushes made sure their entire administrative and household staff understood that they were to respect and be considerate of the Secret Service.
        She was one of the nicest First Ladies, if not the nicest. She never had any harsh word to say about anyone.
        
        BARACK & MICHELLE OBAMA
        Clinton all over again – hates the military and looks down on the Secret Service. He is egotistical and cunning. He looks you in the eye and appears to agree with you but turns around and does the opposite. He has temper tantrums.
        She is a complete bitch who basically hates anybody who is not black, hates the military and looks at the Secret Service as servants.

        Am open to be corrected, but I think Muldoon wrote it in his eponymous second book, published in 1977.
        
        No, while he was not impressed with Carter, norsupportive of his naive (according to Muldoon) “principled” foreign policy, it was IMHO more a case of Muldoon being typically blunt. Other than with the Royal family, he just didn’t do diplomacy and he felt he owed Kiwis his honest opinion.
        
        Mind you he did refer to Carter’s sister as a “peripatetic evangelist” and may have made reference to Billy Carter’s public embarrasments. But then all hios observations were accurate, and captured the feel of the man as a Washington “outsider” for the NZ audience to whom he was writing. Since when is calling someone a “farmer” an insult among New Zealanders? Fed back to Americans, maybe…
        
        But I’d agree that Muldoon’s comment about Mugabe having “just come out of fighting in the jungle” at the 1981 CHOGM Conference was, denials to the contrary, a tit-for-tat in response to the Zimbabwean’s criticism of the Springbok tour.

        But he didn’t just call him a “farmer”, Kimbo, he called him a “*peanut* farmer”. I saw it on TV at the time (early 1977, I think) and it was a typical Muldoon put down. His demeanour and tone of voice indicated he was mocking Carter (as many Americans themselves did) for being a *peanut* farmer (as opposed, for example, to being a cattle rancher).

        Sorry, but I’d suggest it was media mischief-making and your Muldoon Derangement Syndrome that made it sound other than as it was intended – that Carter, in contrast to other American politicians (whom Muldoon criticised as a corrupt class in his 1974 Rise and Fall of a Young Turk) was a humble Washington outsider. You know – same background as “born in a log cabin” Abe Lincoln.

        If there was condescension in Muldoon’s tone, then I’d suggest it was not his, but, as you rightly suggest, to communicate to Kiwis how Carter was perceived by Americans – which again, was an insight Muldoon thought Kiwis were entitled to know about.
        
        But Muldoon couldn’t have cared less what Carter did before he got to the Whitehouse – as long as he did a good job for Western security and NZ trade when he got there. And to be fair, Muldoon had his justifiable suspicions that were consequently confirmed, that Carter was not up to the job. After all, Muldoon thought highly of Reagan, and also described him as a “former actor” – which again was entirely accurate, yet also an insult among many Americans who were critical of Reagan.

      BTW one side gets their entire lives and private affairs trawled through with a fine toothcomb by the MSM; the other side gets all the free passes. Fair enough to call the MSM “the opposition party”.
      
      I am appalled at the personal flaws of Trump and wish someone better had come along to beat Hillary and take the MSM on head-on. But maybe only someone like Trump has the bar-room brawler character necessary to take on the Left head-on, the mainstream “centre right” parties all over the world have become progressively emasculated, nice-guy sellouts and pushovers. And even Vichy-type governments furthering the Left’s agenda, kind of marking time awaiting the return of the actual Left to office.
      
      I never thought I’d see such a phenomenon as the Trump pushback, in my lifetime. It’s like the Reagan era again in a different way. I mistakenly thought Leftism was finished when actual State communism died in 1989. It had merely morphed into domestic subterfuge of the west and was far more successful than State communism ever was.
      
      It is worth contrasting Reagan and Trump. Reagan was a genuinely likeable, humble man.

        I’m not sure if Reagan would have been elected at the last election? There were a lot of very good Republican candidates, Scott Walker is one that comes to mind, with a very good record of conservative governance. He is a modest humble fellow but he got nowhere. The media climate is different today, the electorate is different today, the people voted for Trump when they could have had Walker.
        
        Trump is the very opposite of Obama. I actually like Trump. You totally know what he is thinking, he gets a lot done and he does things no other Republican would ever do. He gets stuck into the partisan left-wing media for a start, watching him get stuck into them is a joy to my heart. They have had it coming for years and years and years.
        
        And the great thing is they will whine and double down on leftist partisan hackery – look at today’s Washington post with every article on the front page being anti Trump. But the people don’t care. They realise the left-wing media was leading them astray for year after year and now they just tune them out.
        
        There are so many good things happening with Trump right now. There will be the occasional reverse – General Flynn and the courts conspiring against Trump’s lawful immigration order. But he is going to keep on winning and the American people and the world will be better for it.
        
        It’s great to see the right get in power and actually do something, actual right of centre Conservative things. Long may it continue.

        But Brexit and Trump and the fall of the Socialist prime minister in France are all good signs that the Conservative right is getting a look in again.
        
        Let me put it this way – if you love your country, if you are proud of your ancestors that built this country, if you are sick of endless whining about our past and all the supposedly wrong things we white people have done. If you are sick of apologising for everything, being a man, being a heterosexual, being a Christian, being white, then it’s time to leave the leftist bubble.
        
        I think our country has been great in the past and could be great again. What we need are leaders like Trump who are actual movers and shakers and have the courage of their convictions to take us there.

Why is it that when I send an email asking two questions of somebody, only the first is ever answered? I have taken to numbering the questions and still find myself going back and thanking people for the answer to no. 1, but asking again for the answer to no. 2. And if email is a weak source of communication, what about Twitter?

So we have a new Journalists on TV Three AM Show and with it a few new Experts. Amanda Gillies gave her expert opinion on the Pike River Mine and as she had been advised by a mines expert saying it would only cost around 2 million dollars to enter the mine but the Government wont go in as they are covering up a crime when the risk is minimal. Duncan Garner says he smells a rat, Paddy Gower Winston’s cheer leader says that Bill English has to show Leadership as this issue wont go away so again TV Three shows again their one sided view for the Families and wont let it go know mater what even if it creates another “DISASTER”.

      It would be fun watching these guys who are talking big on the Pike river do a training run in breathing & safety gear and helmets.
      The length of the drift, before you get to the workings is about 2.25 k’s, with an upward slope. That is the same distance between the intersection of View road and Dominion road and the intersection of Marsden Ave and Dominion Road (for those familiar with Auckland.
      I doubt that any of Peters et al would be able to walk that distance with full kit on without having a coronary. Walking that distance with a single dive tank on would be hard work enough.

When that day arrives, I doubt very much that messers Peters, Monk, Gower et al will be the first to enter; they’ll waive-off and get some other ‘idiot’ to go in their place.         Chuck, it’s not fully ventilated now, and when they were trying to clean it out the methane remained at dangerous levels. Additional ventilation tunnels/shafts could be added….at some huge cost.

        I say the Government’s former chief mines inspector Tony Forster should be listened to with an open mind. If H & S legislation says there should be zero risk it should be thrown in the bin and sensible legislation drawn up to replace it.
        
        It was a good outcome. I think we will see more progress tomorrow. I answered a telephone poll about my voting intentions and my view on Pike River. It will be an election issue.

      Ed, What the families want if there new proposal to be looked at with an open mind by Bill English and the Select Committee. It is true that is could be costly to put down one ventilation shaft. If cost is the main objection they be honest about it.
      
      No one in mine rescue would be forced to go in the drift. It would be their choice.
      
      It is very sad a helicopter pilot died yesterday. After the crash the copters were grounded for a few hours and then it was decided to let the pilot access the risk. If there is another crash will anyone be prosecuted for allow the pilots to access the risk?
      
      This thing is political. That is evident from the vitriol to those who support the families and to Bernie Monk himself.

    My undestanding is that no SAR people want to know. It’s a ‘fiery’ mine and downright dangerous, so no-one wants to ‘fry’ if its not necessary, especially in the knowledge that they would never get out alive.

Newshub has climbed into Andrew Little this morning over the Labour/Green deal in Ohariu:

Labour leader Andrew Little has pulled a u-turn on dirty electorate deals, accepting a Valentine’s Day gift from the Greens, The Dunne Deal.

The Greens will step aside and not run a candidate in Ohariu, giving Labour’s candidate Greg O’Connor a free run to take out Peter Dunne.

Just don’t call it a deal to Andrew Little.

“It’s not a deal,” he says. His more palatable term is “electoral accommodation”.

It’s a sensitive topic because the Labour leader himself criticised these deals during his first election back in 2011 when ACT stood aside for National in the seat he was vying for – New Plymouth.

“If you’re a party and you’re fighting in a general election you put your candidates up and you put your people up and we’ll be the judge. People don’t like being deprived of that choice,” he said at the time.

Little lost to National’s Jonathan Young.

Green co-leader James Shaw says the deal is a crucial move in the left’s plan to “change the government”.

“We’re still going to campaign for the party vote in Ohariu but we’re not going to be standing a candidate,” he said.

So what was a “dirty deal” to Andrew Little in 2011, is now an “electoral accommodation”. Nice try to explain it all away Mr Little, but it’s a back-flip, a u-turn and a flip-flop from the Labour leader, and it’s still a dirty deal.

As much as I dislike Peter Dunne’s brand of chameleon politics, I hope that National voters vote tactically, and that at least some of the 2764 people who voted for the Green Party candidate in 2014 are principled enough not to participate in this duplicity from LabGreen.

  And probably cause a lot of our own drivers – young and old – to resort to the bus. I’m always fascinated by this ‘thing’ we have about foreign drivers when our international reputation is not great.
  I also wonder where those who ‘demand’ that we improve the roads, build passing lanes, put up more signs think the money will come from. Our infrastructure may not be great but as we have only (I suspect) about 1 million citizens actually contributing to the nation’s financial income, we can only do so much. Perhaps close a couple of hospitals and divert those funds into roading?

  That’s a good start Cap quite frankly from someone that lives in the bottom half of the country im sick to death of the never-ending crashes and fatalities that happen down this way nearly all caused by useless tourists my lady is working out of Timaru at the moment and has to travel a lot for work and I truly fear for her life at times, I know we need the tourist coin but the amount of lives these idiots destroy is an on-going tragedy that needs addressed sooner than later

In this story she is literally meeting her fans in the woods where she metaphorically left them. They remain encamped because she has continued to visit them bringing fresh supplies of Russian interference and dangerous behavior by the President-Elect. This ragtag band of wilderness squatters huddle around the camp fires consisting of recounts, faithless electors, conflicts of interest, imaginary white supremacist conspiracies, and impeachment before inauguration.     If this last election has done anything, it has been to truly expose the ugliness of progressivism. The intolerance. The willingness to be violent if their man is not in charge. This is unravelling real fast. Very few Americans will believe Flynn was dealing with the Russians on his own account and there have been so many leaks about this it wont be long before it becomes clear Flynn was doing what Trump asked of him.

At that point even the Republicans are going to have to look into Trump’s financial links to Russia and to conversations between the Trump campaign and the Russians last year.

It was only a matter of time. Plod has been referring to cases of rudeness as “hate crimes” for some time now.

Now they are looking to create a new specific crime . Not their job .

“But police were now discussing with the Human Rights Commission whether a specific hate crime offence should be written into the law.”

Bush should be sacked for over stepping his responsibilities.

If you read the article, it makes it clear, as should be obvious to anyone, that it will be for Parliament to change the law.     This is more than a change in the law. It is how crime is perceived. We don’t have “hate” crimes and we don’t need them. These instances are already covered by existing law as the Com has already stated. So why make not just a new law , but a whole new category of offence, one based not on the criminal act itself but on the motivation of the offender? This goes way beyond hid remit ,which is to enforce existing laws , not to make up new ones and then canvass quangoes to suit his agenda.

  I am wondering if that attack in Huntly was staged as a push for new hate speech laws. “Hate speech” is hard to define and quite open to interpretation. Hate speech laws have been used overseas by people taking offense at something someone said to have others arrested or jailed. It’s a way to silence people whose views you don’t like to hear.   The police depend on, indeed can only function with, the support of reasonable citizens.
  
  If the police are going to fuck around with free speech, they might find less support in cases such as when police shoot, accidentally or not, members of the public.
  
  They might find less tolerance for their hammering with fines the many law abiding motorists who absent-mindedly drift a few miles an hour above speed limits, while each year tens of millions of dollars of unpaid fines from the ratbags of society are quashed.
  
  I’m not optimistic that the police will back off an attack on our democratic rights of free speech given the way they are focusing on PC offences.
  
  An example is the extremely heavy handed way senior police treated an off-duty police sergeant in Queenstown, when, pissed at the weekend while off-duty she said racially offensive things to a taxi driver.
  
  It would be interesting to know if the day has already arrived when there is a PC way of getting police to attend a burglary aftermath at your house – telling them the motive is racism and that the burglars drew swastikas on the walls.

  Parliament makes the law. That is obvious. Police have a responsibility to advise on or suggest changes to the law based on their experience in policing. It would be absurd if the body charged with enforcing the law was unable to have input into what it should be. Whether you agree with what they suggest is another matter.

    I went to the New Zealand vs South Africa game at Eden Park in 1981 as a rugby spectator and not as a protester because at the time I was a young man playing rugby in the then Auckland Rugby Union.
    All club games that day had been cancelled because of the protesters, normally on test match days we would all play morning games but on this day didn’t.
    In the week leading up to the test match Auckland Rugby Clubs kept vigil at Eden Park to ensure that protesters didn’t sneak into the grounds and dig up or damage the pitch which had happened at the Waikato game in Hamilton, causing the game to be cancelled when protesters invaded the pitch.
    It was a challenging and controversial time to be a rugby player, emotions were running high in the community regarding the apartheid regime in South Africa and rugby players were accused of being racist for supporting the tour and for not condemning South Africa,
    To most players at the time it was confusing, we loved the game but also didn’t agree with the apartheid politics of South Africa.
    South Africa was to us young men a long way away and we could not see how at the time that we could change the political scene there by refusing to play rugby against South Africa.
    My love for the game meant that at the time I fully supported the tour and was opposed to the protest movement.
    I had the unfortunate experience of watching a school friend cop a beating at Hamilton during the Waikato game when he joined in the invasion of the pitch. It created a rift between us that has continued over the years, such was the impact of that tour.
    On the day of the Eden Park game many of us were worried that the guys in the plane would crash into the stands, it was a totally unreal situation unfolding and any thing was possible.
    I remember watching Hewson lining up the kick and thinking that he better get it over, a win for the All Blacks meant to us supporters that we had prevailed over the protesters. As soon as the ball went over we moved to leave the stands and as we exited the grounds were confronted by what could only be described as an unreal scene on the streets surrounding the stadium where the Police were engaged in a riot with protesters. There were containers full of sand acting as barricades around the stadium and the streets were littered with rocks and broken glass that had been thrown at the Police by protesters. There were brawls involving supporters and protesters and in Cricket Ave a car had been tipped over on it’s roof with some louts attempting to set it on fire.
    It was a scene that was never to repeated in Auckland and a moment in New Zealand’s history that many of us there that day will never forget.

      By the way Hewson was a last minute replacement for an injured Doug Rollerson and the third test was a baptism of fire for Hewson who was just beginning his All Black career against the then formidable Springboks.
      Hewson went on to have an outstanding career with the All Blacks but was controversially dropped just before eclipsing Don Clark’s record and was replaced by a young and upcoming player Robbie Deans from Canterbury.

        Rollerson didn’t come in until the second test against Scotland, at no. 10 in place of the injured Eddie Dunn. And Hewson scored twenty points that day at Auckland against the Scots (including two tries), so cemented his place in the team against the Springboks – although he was concussed and carted off after 10 minutes in the first test at Christchurch, and replaced by Brian McKechnie. Rollerson played all of that series against the Springboks at no. 10, scoring a try in the first, a drop goal in the third (after 101 missed attempts throughout the series!), and managed to niggle his marker, Naas Botha at every possible occasion.
        
        Ask me the scores when the All Blacks played last year – couldn’t do it. But I can remember everything about that 1981 series. I was 14 at the time, I lived and breathed rugby, and would have been heart-broken if the tour hadn’t gone ahead, just as older rugby fans can remember everything about the 1956 or 1965 Springboks, or the 1959 or 1971 Lions.
        
        In hindsight and with a few more years perspective? Well, stopping it wouldn’t have changed apartheid one bit, and Muldoon had a point that anarchy shouldn’t triumph over New Zealand democracy and law and order. But it didn’t do a hell of a lot of good for rugby, and a few years later, while playing in a rugby team that included nearly every nationality in the South Pacific, it made you stop and think when you realised that if we were in South Africa…you most likely would be in a segregated team. So when the 1985 All Black tour to South Africa was cancelled, I wasn’t too disappointed. And I couldn’t be bothered getting excited about the Cavaliers in 1986.
        
        Oh, yes, and David Halligan joined a select few like Greg Denholm and Ross Fraser who were picked, but never played for the All Blacks.

Well I wonder whether the pissed parrot from Labour will back up the perpetrator of the Huntly hate and abuse rant that happened last weekend. Now that TV Three have produced a interview claiming that she has Mental health problems and has been crying out for some one to help as no body cared you can bet your bottom dollar that the Labour leader will run with what has been said and blame National for this germs problem.

I see Gerry booted the Rural Fire chief to one side today after he sat on his hands and claimed the fires are under control. Now a state of emergency. 4 more homes destroyed….

Not a squeak from the labour Mayor. Typical.

The previously verbally incontinent Ms Bright got a good kicking from an Associate Judge who knocked out her defamation claim against the Council. The Judge asked for memo’s about costs, which Ms Bright will be liable to pay, and unfortunately if you don’t pay Court ordered costs you can be bankrupted PDQ. With the Council’s costs and the outstanding rates demand, she must be in peril of losing her house. The words “wounds” and “licking” come to mind
