  I’ve got a Facebook ‘friend’ who just bombards us with Anti-Trump propaganda every bloody day.
  I usually ignore but when she started ranting about Barron Trump yesterday (‘It’s outrageous that Saturday Night Live can’t enjoy Freedom of Speech in Trump’s America’ etc etc) I politely pointed out that they were attacking a ten year old Child.

    A Saturday Night Live writer has been sacked over an offensive Barron Trump tweet as Chelsea Clinton defends the president’s son.
    
    The SNL writer has been suspended indefinitely after tweeting a poorly received joke about Trump’s 10-year-old son, Barron.
    
    In a now-deleted tweet, Katie Rich tweeted that Barron “will be this country’s first homeschool shooter.”
    
    An outcry on social media from across the political spectrum followed, with many calling for a boycott of the comedy show.

      Even when Obama used both his kids to attack Mitt Romney during the 2012 election (calling him a “bullshitter”) there was no retaliation from the GOP supporters. The Obama daughters were sacred cows.     Trump’s kids do have a high profile but the line has to be drawn at attacking a 10 year old. Freedom of speech in the US is a right, that is true. But if we are to lambast those on the Far Right for equating the last FLOTUS to a primate, we should realise that nobody needs to resort to cruelty to get their point across.

    This is just a classic case of trying to make people walk away.
    
    To them there are no principles, there is just war. Principles are for losers.
    
    They are very quick to turn your principles against you as a weapon, but do not hold themselves to any principles.
    
    They will attack anyone and everyone to the extent a reasonable person just has enough and walks away.
    
    Where’s the reasonable person that would attack kids? I don’t recall the Obama girls being hounded by the right.
    
    To an extent we see the same with stephie and Gabby here. Relentless abuse trying to poison the well of reasonable discourse. They just hope everyone will give up and they feel smug because they’ve destroyed yet another avenue of rational discussion.

It’s good to see the UK Supreme Court reaffirming the supremacy of Parliament; Brexit is something not to be undertaken without proper scrutiny, particularly given the misinformation that dogged the respective campaigns. It seems inevitable that it will go ahead, and in facilitating that May is doing no more than reflecting the will of the people democratically expressed. We live in interesting times.

    It’s not about overturning the referendum result, though I’m sure that’s what some of the backers of the court action wanted.
    
    What the Supreme Court ruled was that Parliament passed a law in 1972 that created EU law as a source of British law. This is more than the UK simply having a treaty with the EU. As the Article 50 trigger is non-revocable, and there is no guarantee the Parliament will pass a Great Repeal Bill as planned, ministers cannot exercise the royal perogative to trigger Article 50.
    
    The referendum gave the political backing for a withdrawal from the EU – it was a political rather than legal effect. It did not change the law to allow Ministers to do so. The Court is saying that Parliament needs to pass a law to do that.
    
    Using the privatisation model, it’d be like the government selling off the SOEs without changing the SOE Act to allow the sales, simply because National won the election campaigning on that promise. Sometimes you have to catch up legally as well as politically.
    
    Importantly, the Court also ruled that it was solely a matter for Westminster. None of the regional parliaments (Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland) get a say.

  I disagree. The people had a chance to directly vote on a decision for the country, and the balance chose to leave. The parliament is there to serve the people, and a direct vote by the people should trump any chance for the parliament’s representatives of the people to have their say.
  
  At this stage, they’re irrelevant and for them to come first over the people’s choice, is dismissive of the people’s choice.

      I would’ve voted if it was a binding referendum. The Government might also have tried to sell it again (you know after getting voted in with that as a policy) instead of just letting the protests go unanswered. It’s a bit like the whining about Clinton having “3 million more votes than Trump”. I would also win at Monopoly each time if I started with all the money.

    Furthermore, as I understand the situation, the courts judged, that that the government cannot change a law, only parliament can do that.
    That’s why in New Zealand we don’t have, for example, nuclear powered ships visiting the country. It would require a law change and that would be too controversial at present.

        Pakistan has a population of 182 million and they are about on par with NZ (population 4.5M) in terms of cricket.
        
        That means you need 40 times as many Pakistanis as Kiwis to generate a good cricketer.

        They have the equivalent of the French at rugby – often brilliant, always erratic despite having players who, in terms of raw talent, are often the best in the world. Imran was the only one who could get consistency out of them away from home (first time they beat England in a series in England was 1987), although Javed’s street-fighting instincts helped! They won the one day series in Aussie in 1996-97 (from memory), but could never win a test series there. A few umpires decisions in Hobart in late 1999 may have helped!
        
        You look at that team they had in the mid-1990s, Waqar, Wasim and Mushtaq as the attack, Amir Sohail, Saaed Anwar, Inzamam, Salim Malik (when he wasn’t taking bribes!), Shahid Afridi – should have dominated world cricket, no matter how good the Aussies were at the time.
        
        Plus they have the obvious problem now that they have to play home games in the UAE. Plus, let’s face it, Pakistan is a failed state and there is no such thing as normal sport in an abnormal society.

        As for Inzy- That guy was one of the most naturally talented batsmen I’ve ever seen..Sadly his fitness and motivation let him down at times. He was like an elderly sloth running between wickets..

        Physique plays a big part, I think. The further north you go in the sub-continent, the taller people get. So by the time to get to the Patans – from whom Imran Khan comes – they are the perfect build.
        
        Also, even though the pitches are often the same as India – dust bowls not conducive to seam bowling, the Pakistani quicks starting with Sarfraz Nawaz (ok he was medium-fast!) were the first to develop reverse swing, and also pitching the ball up to negate the slow wickets. With respect to the Windies of the 1970s and 1980s, their bowlers were bloody boring to watch in tandem – Malcolm Marshall coming around the wicket digging it into the batsmen’s ribcage for over after over in a battle of attrition. The way Wasim and Waqar used to pitch it up, look for the yorker and the edge was brilliant to watch and gave scoring opportunities.
        
        But India? I always remember John Wright’s amusing comment when, as NZ captain, on being asked before a test in Bombay by the media when he thought the spinners would come into the play. “I looked at the deck and felt like saying ‘in the fifth over on the opening morning’, but decided to be positive and say “at the end of the third day'”!

        No, Keeping Stock was right – best swinging yorker you ever saw. Context was everything. First ball, 150+kph, broke the stump. We were chasing 127 to win the test, and having been 39/3 overnight, we got to 64/3, and Wasim and Waqar had already bowled about seven overs on the trot.
        
        The Pakistani skipper, Javed, was asked afterwards, “did you think of bowling your leg spinner, Mushtaq” and he said “yes, but even though you were only three wickets down, really, against our bowlers you were six down”.
        
        And so it proved. Waqar and Wasim bowled right through the session, with increasing, not diminishing pace, ferocity and intensity, and once we lost Andrew Jones, they went through us like shit through a goose, all out for 93. The Latham dismissal summed the thing up. You could tell the dam had burst and every batsman who went in after him was scared witless. Best display of two fast bowlers in tandem I ever saw, and fit to rival Larwood and Voce, Lindwall and Miller, Lillee and Thommo. Greatness.

  Thankfully we have a few decent judges who can recognize a violent beating/ family violence when they see it.
  Hopefully these silly wives will have time while this pathetic bully is in prison to find out it IS possible to live without a violent husband.
  Unfortunately Cunningham is not the only judge to let dangerous men off the hook.
  My friend’s husband threatened to”smash her” with a hammer also.
  The judge ignored his long history of violence and found him not guilty.
  This guy has lived over 40 years in NZ, married all that time to a Pakeha teacher, but still utilized the services of a translator (at our expense).
  No doubt it helped project the image of a poor little P I guy, fresh off the boat and bamboozled by the bad Pakeha’s “fire water”.

You can search by ‘relevance’ or date – not sure that the first option is much use. Search link is near the top right next to the twitter symbol. I still feel that the topic of domestic violence and polygamy in NZ has not been explored very well yesterday.

In Koran, it clearly states that you can beat your wives but not too much. (I usually use open hand. ). And you can have more than one wife. (I have seven) So that all makes sense.

But in NZ there are inconsistencies. I thought that you are not allowed to beat your wife, even gently with a hammer. (Backward country, not under Sharia yet.)
And you you cannot have two or more wives. Yet we have a judge that initially ruled in favor of the accused in the article below.

Is this some sort of new Sharia judge? Because if so I need to meet them right away and invite them to join the Islamic council of NZ.

      I recall a court case of some years ago when a good Christian Samoan man came home late from the pub, bleeding from an altercation he had engaged in there.
      He was infuriated to discover his wife was asleep at 2 am, instead of waiting up to welcome him home with a hot toddy, and tend to his wounds.
      In his justified rage, he dragged her from the marital bed and administered a severe bashing.
      (No doubt aggravated from having lost the previous fight.)
      In court, his legal counsel defended him by informing the judge that beating your wife was a sign of affection in his homeland.

  You can have many “wives” but only one legal wife.
  
  Basically it’s like having a longterm threesome (or eightsome in your case).
  
  Problems happen when the arrangement breaks up, either through death or divorce, the non-legal wives then do not have legal wife status. They can’t make claims for alimony etc. Wills need to be vey specific otherwise the legal wife gets it all.
  
  Of course the bloke is still on the hook for child support.

  Your post reminds me of an experience I had with our own NZ CYPF department.
  A 15 year old girl had gone to CYPF regarding her stepfather, who had been beating her for 9 years, including with the side of a machete.
  The social workers assigned to the case were too afraid of the stepfather to meet with him in their office and arranged for a “minder” to protect them.
  In the end they concluded the teen had to go back home, and he was allowed to keep beating her, but “not as hard” as previously.

  The interesting thing about the pin being pulled on US involvement in the TPP (is it final, or just a negotiating strategy?) is the fact that Australia is now openly embracing the idea of bringing China and/or Indonesia on board. ( See the Age; I don’t know how to paste addresses) In the Herald, English has said, in essence, that it’s fine for the US, who can sustain an internal economy, but not us; we need to trade. Given the new POTUS’ sabre rattling over China, both economically and politically, we may be seeing the start of much more contentious and partisan times along the west coast of the Pacific. Who will we side with, I wonder? I suppose it will be whoever offers us the most, and at the moment, that is not looking like our old ally.

I see that the twitterati are in another outrage, this time over President Trump’s preventing US aid money from being given to charities that offer family planning advice and assistance to women in developing countries.

It seems to me that it would send a far more powerful message, and incidentally actually do something to help the women themselves, if everybody who hit the “dislike” button and thereby felt virtuous, instead (or as well, if you must) found out which are the charitable organisations in question, and made a donation to them.

  It’s called the Mexico City law, and every Democrat president repeals it, and every Republican president brings it back (since Reagan).
  
  It requires foreign non-governmental organizations to not provide or promote abortion services if they receive funds from the U.S. government. Specifically, the funds would come from the United States Agency for International Development, and abortion cannot be presented as a “method of family planning.” Promoting abortion services includes work such as counseling for women that includes language on abortions.
  
  The policy was named for Mexico City because it was announced at the United Nations International Conference on Population in that location.
  
  It was signed into law by former President Ronald Reagan and went into effect in 1985.
  
  The policy stayed in effect until 1993, when it was rescinded by former President Bill Clinton. Since then, it has been reinstated by every Republican president and rescinded by every Democratic president within their first few days in office. Obama rescinded it exactly eight years ago, on Jan. 23, 2009.
  
  Obama’s statement when he repealed the policy read, in part, “It is clear that the provisions of the Mexico City Policy are unnecessarily broad and unwarranted under current law, and for the past eight years, they have undermined efforts to promote safe and effective voluntary family planning in developing countries. For these reasons, it is right for us to rescind this policy and restore critical efforts to protect and empower women and promote global economic development.”
  
  The presidents previous to Obama who took actions on the policy signed them on Jan. 22 of their respective years, which is the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision. Some noted in 2009 that Obama likely waited a day on purpose due to the anniversary, though Obama never confirmed or denied that.
  
  The order does provide exceptions in cases of rape, incest or life-threatening conditions.
  
  Critics of the policy refer to it as the “Global Gag Rule,” and the U.S. has been unsuccessfully sued over the policy by those who say it limits freedom of speech.
  
  The policy creates legal problems for organizations in certain countries, such as South Africa, where the groups are legally required to inform a woman seeking an abortion of her rights and refer her to a facility that would perform an abortion.

  Perhaps the Net has been neutral because for a long time there wasn’t technology for prioritising traffic.

    Making Matariki a national holiday would also have the problem of setting the right date.
    
    Not all tribes marked the New year with “matariki”, which means something like “two eyes” and refers to the rising of the stars known to most of the Western world as the Pleiades.
    
    Some tribes marked the New Year with the appearance of Puanga (Rigel, the brightest star in Orion) in the evening sky.
    
    Some tribes did mark the new year by the appearance of Matariki-Pleiades just before dawn in late May or early June, but some others celebrated it at the first new moon, or full moon, after the rising of Matariki-Pleiades.
    
    Matariki celebrations seem to have pretty much died out, but about 15 years ago a revival was led by the Maori Language Commission, the Ministry of Education, and Te Papa museum.
    
    SPC suggests a second National day (second in addition to Watangi Day) should be Matariki.
    
    That could easily become like a double Waitangi Day – two chances for Maori to err their grievances and rough up politicians. More of a second “Maori day” than a “New Zealand Day” (you can bet there would be a drive to have it called Aotearoa Day).

Trump cant defeat Isis. Only Moslems can defeat ISIS albeit with some judicious military advice. All ISIS wants is an apocalyptic battle with Rome to bring on the end of days. As soon as the West goes to war against them they have achieved their objective and probably rallied most of Islam behind them.

The only way to keep the US safe (and probably NZ as well ) is to have the Moslem nations unite against ISIS and that is roughly where we are now. Trump says his main foreign policy objective is to defeat ISIS but his first move looks to be shifting the US embassy to Israel to Jerusalem. If he wants to give ISIS a leg up and encourage governments to give them a safe haven that would just about do it.

NZ has improved from being the fourth least corrupt country in the world to be joint top with Denmark.

New Zealand is ranked the least corrupt country in the world in a new report, jumping three places from last year.

The annual Corruption Perceptions Index by Transparency International gave New Zealand a score of 90 out of 100 for 2016, ranking it alongside Denmark in top spot.

Last year it ranked fourth with a rating of 88 after previously heading the league table.

The index ranks 176 countries on a scale of zero to 100. Somalia is at the bottom of the list, scoring just 10.

Justice Minister Amy Adams said it was encouraging to see New Zealand reclaim the top spot, having held it for eight of the last 10 years.

“The result reflects New Zealand’s zero-tolerance of bribery and corruption, and affirms our reputation as world leaders in this area,” she said.

Ms Adams said the government had implemented a number of anti-corruption initiatives, including new bribery offences and increased penalties, fast-tracking a second phase of anti-money laundering reforms and ratifying the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.

    I find Jason Johns very refreshing and quite an informative point of view.
    
    Obviously there are many around here, especially the likes of yourself who don’t want to have people thinking about and discussing the Littlewood Treaty would they hence you need to slander him.
    
    Personally, I think it would be great if it was revealed to us the text of the English version of the Treaty but what you’re afraid of is that the organised plunder of NZ would then stop and the whole edifice of lies built on the back of bullshit history would collapse in on it own weight.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average just powered through the 20000 level for the first time ever, setting an all-time intraday high three trading days after the inauguration of Donald Trump. Moments after the open, the Dow shot up to 20033.77.

The new record comes as stocks have been on the rise for much of the past three months, finding fresh legs since Election Day to add to one of the longest bull-market runs in U.S. history. The Dow industrials closed under 18000 as recently as Nov. 4, but have risen 12% since then.
