Make America great again said Trump.
Its working already.
Chinese manufacturing giant Foxconn is considering investing $7 billion to build a new factory in the US assembling flat panel screens. Reports from The Wall Street Journal and the Nikkei Asian Review say Foxconn chairman Terry Gou discussed the plans at a company event this weekend, speculating that the factory could create 30,000 to 50,000 new jobs. Foxconn has been considering building such a facility in the US since 2014, and Gou said if the company were to make the move now, it would need substantial incentives from the government in the form of access to cheap land and power.

Gou said that a US factory making displays would be beneficial to Foxconn by cutting down on shipping costs, but stressed the company would need financial incentives for the deal to make economic sense. He added that the state of Pennsylvania — which Trump became the first Republican candidate to win since 1988, in part due to his pledge to bring jobs back to the area — was currently ahead in the bid to win Foxconn’s investment. “Right now Pennsylvania is very proactive,” said Gou. “I have to tell other states to hurry up or we’ll go ahead and sign with Pennsylvania.”

        What I am saying is there are many here who decry what they call corporate welfare. That is any assistance from Govt at all. I happen to disagree with this mantra, careful Govt assistance can be a good thing IMHO.
        BUT
        These same people seem to be applauding Trump doing just that.
        So what am I missing… or is it just hypocrisy?

        What you’re missing is the swamp is the “Federal” swamp.
        The incentives are being offered by “The State of Pennsylvania”.
        The corporate welfare spoken of is the direct funding to companies like GM who got cash from the Obummer administration.

    Isn’t that how many businesses are run? With financial incentives to bring 30,000 plus jobs? Most governments would be willing to make some concessions, and I’m pretty sure the workers wouldn’t be knocking the idea.

  Interestingly, “re-onshoring” has been a phenomenon for probably a decade already in the USA. It goes unnoticed by the MSM’s “experts” because they do not want to acknowledge that the phenomenon is limited to Republican States with “right to work” laws, lightly regulated resource extraction sectors, low urban land costs due to an absence of centrally planned growth boundaries, and low overall local costs.
  
  Rick Perry based his run for Presidential Candidacy 4 years ago, on the fact that Texas’ (of which he was Governor) economic performance was so outstanding, that it would obviously benefit the USA as a whole to learn from the regulatory settings that produced that success. Perry often pointed out that encouraging national statistics (eg on jobs) for which the credit was repeatedly claimed by and for the Obama Administration, were only that way because of Texas and a few other States who refused to follow the libbewwal-left regulatory model.

      Exactly! “Manufacturing” in the USA has not shrunk at all, it has grown. “Manufacturing jobs” have shrunk, and that is only partly due to trade. The problem is that the free-market recalibration that would see employment return to normal via growth in non-manufacturing industries, has been derailed in some places especially, by bad local politics (always Dem) exacerbated by “the establishment” (Wall St etc).

      All electronics manufacturing is already highly automated.
      
      Have a look at a pick and place machine at work. When you’re making a board with upward of 500 components then you use a robot (pick and place machine) to put on the parts. People are too slow, too error prone and too expensive.
      
      If you’re putting on hundreds of components – some that cost less than 1 cent – you can’t even afford to do that with $1/hour labour.

    Note what they said. This is for LCD and high level assembly.
    
    When you’re doing this sort of assembly it is often cheaper to do this using $20/hour workers than to ship it halfway across the world and use a $1/hour worker.

    As part of my job I visit factories in the Chinese manufacturing heartland of the Pearl river delta…average wage for a factory worker would be about 3000/4000 RMB a month and rising…nothing like the “fabled” a dollar a day!

  ‘access to cheap land’ – I take this as meaning that the firm can procure some bare land and not have to go through lots of planning hoops and pay enormous ‘development’ contributions. ‘cheap power’ to me means the power company will not stiff them with a huge contribution to hook up the power.
  To me, this means that communities will sharpen their pencils to try and snare a potential contributer to the community’s wellbeing.

    It means that the local authorities will give the plant owners an exemption from paying local property taxes, will probably raise a low interest development bond to fund the plant’s construction, and may exempt the plant from local employment and planning ordinances.
    
    That’s how corporate welfare generally works. One law for me, another law for thee…

So Trump is acting swiftly on his campaign promises to pull out of the TPP and renegotiate NAFTA.

He’s missing the point a bit isn’t he? In order for an economy to export stuff, it has to have stuff that other people want to buy. Apart from (stupid) Disneyland and (equally stupid) American rap music, what stuff does America make that everybody else wants to buy? Could the yanks ever make an iPhone as well or as cheaply as the Chinese can? Ditto for many other products and, please, don’t even mention their auto industry.

Its going to be fascinating to watch. If Trump can pull it off he’ll be a bloody genius. However…. can anybody see this happening?

  I read somewhere ( sorry cannot find a link) when the USA production of the iphone was being discussed a month or so ago that the labour content in it’s production was only about US$20. So there is obviously a lot of automation ( and huge margins!).
  The USA manufacture plenty of stuff ( planes, agricultural equipment, chemicals etc. etc.)
  It is the products that USA companies get manufactured out of the USA that needs to be evaluated to see how realistic Trump’s aims are.

    Good answer Ross, thank you. I wonder, though, if the American economy can be turned around as quickly as Trump seems to think, given that the workforce will need to be re-skilled and their infrastructure re-built in many cities before they can embark on renewal.

      You could be right Dave, that it will take longer for the reasons you mention but Trump’s role is to build the enthusiasm and create the environment for it to able to be done –eg. removing regulatory hurdles.
      An example for you : my brother -in-law did some work in China, project managing the construction of a flower farm ( roses) for an Australian company. All the roses will be exported to Australia. It is a big operation. I spoke to the Aussie director who overseas the project and he told me they could have easily setup the farm in Queensland but the regulations and conditions would be so restrictive they did not really think much about the option. Before someone says environmental issues; I’ve seen the Chinese farm and there is absolutely nothing that affects the local environment.
      I think this is the sort of thing Trump wants changed –obviously in different industries.

        You raise a very good point. Regulations, bureaucracy and eco-bullshit are probably a huge disincentive for manufacturers in the western world…. which is an important area for our own government to look at without delay.

        You’re welcome to be facetious, but the reason why Intel started outsourcing processor design to Israel was because they pioneered the development of processors with low power consumption.
        
        This is what has enabled the world to transition from desktop computers to laptops without sacrificing performance. It’s one of the many impressive R&D efforts that Israelis have led in recent years.

I know the KB community is tired of Hugh Pavletich and downticks him badly every time he puts in an appearance, but seeing that Auckland’s median multiple gets higher every time there is a new Demographia report, just how high does it have to go before the KB community consensus is that it is a problem and perhaps certain beloved political leadership has let the country down?

Do the community members who dislike the subject being raised, really, really think this is not a bubble that is going to turn NZ into the next Spain or Ireland one day? Classic mass madness.

    Exactly! And the longer it goes on, the worse it has to get. Back in the day when the older generations tell us they had it so tough with high interest rates and so on, most of them still had the mortgage paid off in a decade. This is because inflation was so high, nominal income growth was high, and the initial house price was low anyway.
    
    But first home buyers now will be still on a treadmill of burdensome repayments 20 years later.

    As you point out, this has consequences for “aggregate demand”.     Has he really personally appointed thousands? I am really encouraged to hear that, he needs people he can trust, and bureaucracy-stacking by the libbewwal left is a plague that needs curing. Timid right-wing Presidents (and governments in most of the west) have never done the purges that were really necessary, I am watching this with interest in the US.     It’s not a case of “controlling the media”, which is the province of the Left, it is a case of fighting an ongoing war with it, for all to see and make up their own minds what side they are on. Nowhere in the west has there ever before been a government on the right that got serious about this.
    
    NZ for example, has pretty much been run along lines for the last few years, that MSM talking heads approved of. The “centre right” is intoxicated with “popularity”. Trump is trying something else, and it is breathtakingly bold.

It’s been a great 48 hours trolling left wingers. Now that the march by the catwomen (who have never been chatted up by a man, let alone one as wealthy and successful as Trump) is over, the so called “left” have been posting an image showing how many more people attended Obama’s inauguration.

It drives the SJWS nuts when I point out:
– Trump’s supporters are far more likely to be in work and so can’t attend.
– Washington DC is a hotbed of people sucking the public tit, hardly a fertile base for Trump support
– Trump supporters just want to get on with life rather than indulge in fanfare and navel gazing. Note their complete disdain for celebrities and the fact they didn’t feel the need to “protest” against Obama.
– Trump supporters are more likely to be responsible for children and businesses and as such can’t be bothered spending a whole day standing 1km away to hear something they could take stock of in 15 mins by watching it on TV. Their time is more important to them.

  The problem, EAD, is not that there are good reasons for the lower turn-out, with which I totally agree,( you forgot to mention that for many of them, the cost of travel to Washington would be unaffordable) but that Trump and his acolytes refused to accept it, and indeed demonstrably lied about things that they could be caught out on. His supporters may say that this is unimportant, what counts is that he is sticking it to the press, but it also shows someone whose need for approval outweighs his regard for the truth. A worrying trait in the most powerful man on earth

  The other thing that stands out about this inauguration is the sheer nastiness of the Left on display. Apparently the racist Right in the USA is a terrible existential evil….? Therefore at Obama’s 2009 inauguration there must have been mass organised protests and masked thugs smashing windows and burning cars and beating up anyone wearing an O cap? Those awful Koch Brothers would surely be into mobilising civil disorder, not as if G Soros would ever do such a thing in real life.

      Media behaviour is one thing and if anything CNN, MSNBC etc are worse to Presidents like Bush (let alone Trump) than Fox are to ones like Obama; civil disobedience is another.
      
      There is a far higher risk of Trump being assassinated by some lefty terrorist than there ever was of O being taken out by some neo-Nazi. And if it happens, you will see the Left dancing in the streets in numbers like the right would never have had the shame to.

  According to Press Secretary Spicer an incredible number of people watched President Trump’s inauguration on Friday, a working day.
  Far more than attended the various protest marches held across America and around the world on Saturday, a non-working day.

Having worked overseas in a real low tax country for a US financial consortium I became familiar with the intents of the Directors and Shareholders that in any contract that it is only fair if the US control everything.
That has not changed.
The US will only return to the TPP if they have everything they want – not what anybody else wants.

I followed Keeping Stocks link yesterday to the Spectator – a publication along with the Saturday FT were the constants in terms of weekend reading whilst I was posted in London.

After leaving the article of Brendan O’Neils on Trump, the most prominent article was written by a Jew who has lived in Britain all of his life but has now decided to up sticks to Israel:

The article is very much an Oy Vey style rant where he states:

“Israel is as pro-immigration as Britain seems anti-.”

He then describes the benefits that immigrants get (paid courtesy of the Welfare checks Israel gets from the USA, and other Western nations) when they arrive in Israel:

They provide language lessons and pay for your flight. There are concessions and rebates for years. They hand you, I swear, a new mobile phone SIM card when you arrive at Ben Gurion airport, and there will be a taxi waiting to take you to your new home. There is a public holiday in celebration of immigrants.

Then is the real hum-dinger for those who take time to reflect on what they read – he describes just what it takes to be able to immigrate to Israel:

All it takes is some form-filling, a £50 fee, passport photos, a birth certificate and evidence that I’m Jewish. Membership of a synagogue will do, but I don’t have that. There was some rabbinical detective work: the names on my birth certificate were cross-matched to the names on my parents’ ketubah, their marriage contract. The rabbi writes a short letter and you have the proof. At the first meeting my immigration officer, Moran, asked if I’m Messianic. I am not. It would be an immovable obstacle if I were, it turns out.

Interesting isn’t it – the Jewish diaspora advocate and lobby that Western Countries open up their borders to the 3rd World, without limits yet paradoxically operate the most racist, discriminatory immigration system in the world. It is the reason why Israel has gone from 6% Jewish to 77% Jewish (and increasing) at the same time Britain (in parallel with every single other white country) have gone from 95-99.9% European to less than 80% (and rapidly decreasing particularly amongst those under 20) ensuring that Europeans are demographically doomed unless there is a radical policy change.

Also interesting is that Israel will not allow in Jews who are “Messianic. If you were to read only the rabid and aggressive below the commentators on blogs such as this, you would believe that Jesus was actually Jewish when the reality is the State of Israel won’t allow you in if that is you’re belief system! Indeed it would be an immovable object as described by the author.

As someone who is veryJew-wise, it is good to see the author is at least honest. Nothing, I repeat nothing makes a Jew angrier than saying Jesus was a Jew – press them hard enough on this, and they will lose their shit every time. Whether you believe in Jesus or not, it is very telling that Jews despise everything about Jesus and the message of love and compassion he preached.

    My God these males are greedy!
    And it’s not just Muslims.
    I know a supposedly Christian guy with at least 14 kids.
    He keeps two families a block away from each other with 10 of the kids.
    (Both housed by HNZ of course.)
    The reason for the close proximity is for his convenience of course, although it causes all sorts of problems for the wives and kids.
    But I have to give him credit, it would be even more convenient to keep them under one roof like some Muslims do.

      Oh yeah! NZ full of multi-wive non-Muslim families. Funny we only hear about it when some Muslim crops up with his wives.
      
      Unusual about the Muslim thug, Yasir Mohib, though, is that only one of his wives has her face covered with a niquab.
      
      But it would be interesting to know if NZ taxpayers are financing Muslim multi-wive families.

        Why do you think they come here?
        The niqab is to hide the bruises.
        After the honeymoon is over, the second wife will be getting one too.
        The multi-wife families have been going on since the DPB was introduced.
        It is quite common among Pacifica men.
        The Laughing Samoans even include references to the practice in their repertoire of jokes.
        These bigamists wouldn’t get away with it in their homelands, (or be able to afford it), but here, it is paid for by Winz.
