Reading on the stuff web site, I came across this story by a single woman.

I’m 39, single, easy on the eyes, easy to get along with and good in bed. And I can’t get laid.
How is that possible? Well, for starters, despite the fact that I use words like “laid” and reject the conventional wisdom that says female sexuality is best muted and monitored, I believe sex is metaphysical and elemental. An exchange of energies and all that. Which means casual sex in the Tinder sense doesn’t work for me.
I have no desire to see disappointment on my gynaecologist’s face when my Pap comes back abnormal. I want a lover.

I’m also concerned about immigration. I went to Minnesota and I had a Somali cabdriver who lectured me for 35 minutes to the airport about how women in America have too much freedom. My thought process on that is that I don’t like seeing people going through the hardship they go through, but I don’t want to go backwards in the feminist movement, either.

Fake news award must go to todays Wellington Dominion Post.There is an article there made up by a down at the mouth copy typist named Bowron. Bowron has made up a story completely without research,about Donald Trump,and Robert Muldoon. Fairfax must be desperate to sell newspapers,when they allow a novice like Bowron to write such a pack of lies.

  Given the stated protectionist policies of Trump with regard to tariffs, and the isolationist nature of Trumps economic vision, added to a tendency to rule by edict without regard to the wider economy, there are distinct similarities to be drawn to Trump and Muldoon.

    Oh, and to the person who downvoted me on this comment, could you point out where I am wrong? Personally, on economic matters I would identify more as a republican than a democrat if I was in the US, as I am more interested in economic freedom, and less state control. The statements we are seeing from Trump lean more towards the latter less towards the former. 2 Statements from Trump wiped a billion dollars off the value of 2 companies, Boeing and Toyota. He has intervened in Carrier stopping them from moving production. He wants goods to be made in the US and to impose tariffs on goods that are not. This will raise prices, erode purchasing power and put pressure on wages to grow in the US. This will make domestic goods more expensive requiring tariffs to be raised to compensate, or industries to be subsidized, much like Muldoons NZ in the early 80’s.
    
    Now, if I’m wrong, explain why? Trumpist economic policies with regard to business seem to be the same sort of state control by stealth that we endured (you had to apply to the state to subscribe to an overseas magazine), and the effects could be just as devastating.

      Muldoon (and others, it was almost a non-partisan political consensus in the 70’s) was trying to do this in a tinpot little economy with around 2 million domestic consumers of products.
      
      And within the USA, Trump is all about unleashing the free market in such things as energy and transport. Muldoon was all about State-run Think Big projects and protecting the government monopoly on domestic transport, via rail.
      
      There would be similarities; Muldoon was definitely culturally non-PC and had no time for loony Greenie stuff, which had got nothing like the momentum back then that Trump is defying now.

        I understand that the US has potentially 350 million consumers, but to get the best deal for US manufacturing in the modern open world, Tariffs could be detrimental.
        
        There is potential for this to be damaging to other countries. What would happen if a US based film company tries to make a movie in NZ, using NZ facilities and staff? Although given the disdain that Trump hold much of the film industry in, and vice versa, this could be an outlier….. 😉

    There are “similarities” to be drawn between Trump and a lot of people in NZ political history, but Trump really is a mash-up of many different ones, no single one works.

        Correction: the public officers at the head of every major scientific body on the planet, know which side their bread is buttered on, regardless of the truth and what their organisation’s grassroots membership actually believes.
        
        And no, the actual cabal members responsible for the malfeasances don’t have intellectual and moral superiority, they are unscrupulous abusers of trust from anyone and everyone who still trusts them, and more often than not, they are participating in crushing honest scientists and depriving people of honest careers. Including in entire industries outside science. They are some of the most unprincipled people in the world right now.
        
        I don’t say this about the science profession rank and file, including the large numbers of contributors to and reviewers of the IPCC reports, whose moderate, non-CACC views are utterly misrepresented by the final Summary written by a cabal of some of the biggest fraudsters in human history. Furthermore, most scientists just have to understand what side their bread is buttered on for the sake of their own incomes, family, house, mortgage etc. – and at least not rock the boat.

I see Winston is at it again. Given the laws that have been passed as a result of the Pike River Disaster, re-entry to the mine is impossible without exposing the directors to huge liability which cannot be abrogated nor insured against.

Winston is just using the bereaved families to raise his own profile, and to have the Mine Re-entry become a non negotiable for co-alition agreements is disgusting. Winston wants to put lives at risk as the price of being part of the Government. Let that statement sink in for a bit.

He is using the grief of the families to further his own ambitions. Sickening.

    Chuck, minimal risk is still risk, and even if the minimal risk goes pear shaped, the fact that the risk was minimal would not mitigate any responsibility that the directors are required to assume.
    
    This is a sealed space that has tragically demonstrated just how dangerous it is, and the directors have an obligation under the law to keep all people safe in areas under their control, be that employees or otherwise. Minimal risk, in this case, is akin to being a little bit pregnant….

        Strangely, after the disaster, the EPMU denied there were safety issues at Pike River. Who was the boss of the EPMU at that time? None other than Andrew Little.

    However employment lawyer Peter Cullen explain’s Solid Energy’s position better than most (emphasis is mine):
    
    The Act has a wide scope, placing duties to ensure safety in the workplace, so far as reasonably practicable, on any person conducting a business or undertaking. Now individuals involved with the management of businesses can face penalties personality.

    Conduct that is reckless as to the risk of death, serious injury, or serious illness (and certainly knowing the risk places Solid Energy in that category) carries a fine of up to $3 million, or for an individual, a $600,000 fine and/or five years imprisonment.
    
    So if Solid Energy has a report from experts telling them it is not safe to re-enter the mine, they would be taking a huge risk to ignore that advice.
    
    Under the Act it is not necessary for someone to actually be killed or injured in the workplace for sanctions to be imposed. Failure to comply with a duty to ensure health and safety, which exposes persons to the risk of death, serious injury or illness, carries a fine of up to $1.5m or $300,000 for individuals.
    
    Even if no one is exposed to the risk of death, serious injury or serious illness, but a duty within the Act is not complied with, you can be fined up to $500,000, or $100,000 for individuals.
    
    Solid Energy would face huge liability if the mine was re-entered, not to mention how disastrous it would be if harm to more people occurred in Pike River.
    
    The prime minister has said the issue is not a political one, it is a health and safety one, and he is most certainly right.
    
    In any event, the protest to stop the sealing has now largely ended as the blockade and protesters on the access road have been removed, on threat of arrest.
    
    The lesson from Pike River must surely be to err on the side of safety.

      well he will not go down into the mine under any circumstances.
      
      I know Peters looks for causes to gain votes but this time it is sickening watching the greasy little prick raising false hopes of distressed grieving relations.
      
      I used to have a small soft spot … very small.. for Peters. No longer as this recent publicity stunt just shows how desperate and low one can go to
      claw in votes.

        If he was using this issue to press for a bit less eco-theocracy economic lunacy on basics like open-cast mining in remote locations like Pike River, I would be cheering him on. But if it suits him politically at any one time, he will oppose any such reform, even if it costs his own supporting constituencies in lost regional jobs.

  Wonder will he deny that he promised the Pike River hopefuls a chance to break the law in going back into the mine, when the heat goes on. A flashback and comparison, was when he got the $100,000 dollars from Owen Glenn ,yet went into denial when asked about it. Also the promise he made, to a victim of a TAB murder and robbery,that he would make sure she would be compensated any which way?.If he had anything to do with it.   There seems to be some sort of credibility gap between the actual sample comments from the students as reproduced in the article and their summing up of the final report.
  I thought the students made some good points, but things seem to have spun out of control from there. Whether this was due to the agenda of the report’s authors or the Daily Mail is hard to tell.
  If the article was in the Guardian it might have read entirely differently; particularly the headline.

Blow-out in the costs of the new central library in Christchurch. It’s now going to be $95 million.

That would buy a helluva lot of books, and support a lot of librarians.

Putting so much money into concrete and glass for a library is reckless when the book world teeters on the edge of moving from paper to e-books like Kindle. A future central library might be a computer in a data centre.

Even if paper books continue to dominate, the better model might be a ring of suburban libraries backed up by a book store or depot. This would follow the retail pattern that’s emerged in Christchurch: suburban malls and business groupings.

An anachronism before it’s off the drawing board is one view of a splendidly housed library in a city centre that is receding to be a tourist and hotel hub and the home of central and local-government offices.

      Of course it is, although the streets would not be empty. If the streets were empty there would be no cars on them, smart or otherwise.

        And car-sharing / Uber style hiring out of driverless cars when not in use by their owners, will make non-ownership call-up-as-you-need, mind-blowingly cost-effective. Possibly cheaper than heavily subsidised public transport, regardless of the orders of magnitude greater flexibility.
        
        Public transport as we know it, public or licensed monopolies, unionised, large vehicles, fixed routes, has been kept on life support well past its time already. Even back when the Model T Ford first became ubiquitous, regulations had to be passed to stop the drivers of the newfangled automobiles scalping the tram services ridership as they passed stops on their way anywhere. Only regulatory prohibitions have prevented “private para-transit” from fulfulling its obvious potential. Eventually technology gets around the anti-free-market obstacles. We are at a crucial threshold of political decision, whether the market will be allowed to take humanity forwards now, or whether utopian regulatory cementing of the status quo will happen. Meanwhile, Vichy National does not help by caving in to Len and now to Phil, on train sets and trams, taxpayer subsidy of.

      Why would the trajectory over time, of increasing marginal cost of subsidies per unit of freight / passengers moved, reverse?
      
      If there are reasons to anticipate this, I am genuinely curious to know. Maybe automated handling of freight and driverless pickup and delivery at each end, could create a rebound in rail freight volumes?
      
      I think urban passenger rail has no such potential, though, the long-term trend is likely to turn into a rout from here on.

Along with the announcement that we’re going to get 35 more fixed speed cameras, we also have the latest cringeworthy anti-speed ad on TV.
A loser who caused his own crash because he drove like a moron is thanking the guy who he crashed into because the other guy was going so slow the loser wasn’t killed.
It’s all about ‘speed’. The message is that you can drive incompetently, distracted, spaced-out, half asleep or like a complete twat. All these things are OK because when your accident inevitably happens you can increase your chances of survival if the other guy is going slow enough.
Is this really the sort of brainwashing our drivers need?

  My favourite is the woman driving through town. An unattended kid runs towards the road, wait the parent stops the kid before their lax minding of said kid can cause a tragedy. Two teen girls run out into traffic, in front of a parked car, where the approaching driver can’t see them.
  
  The problem here is lax parental attention and dangerous kids who don’t think.
  
  Can’t they make an ad where the claimed problem is actually the demonstrated problem?

  Firstly, if you did have an accident and it was less severe because someone was driving more slowly, wouldn’t you be very grateful to them?

  I don’t believe the intelligence chiefs made a mistake in advising Trump and Obama of the existence of this document. If it had emerged without the incoming and outgoing presidents knowing about it, it would have seen them in deep shit. The mistakes made are if intelligence people leaked it to the press, although it sounds as if it could have come from anywhere., but mostly in Buzzfeed publishing the whole thing. To be fair to Buzzfeed, their excuse, of “letting people make up their own mind” is the same Trump used when he tweeted his agreement with Julian Assange over the hacking a week or so ago. But both were reprehensible in that supposedly responsible individuals and organisations widely published and implicitly supported information they knew was unverified and unverifiable.
  There seems to be a blurring of the lines in this debate, though, as to whether it is the truth of the contents of the document that is important or the fact that these allegations, false or otherwise, were available and had been disclosed to the Prez. I haven’t seen any mainstream news organisation yet claim that the contents of the document were able to be verified, other than by the reporting of the reliability of the compiler of the report.

The NZ Herald has an article on NZ top high school scholars from 2015: Top scholars: Where are they now?

What I found particularly noteworthy is that none of the young men and women listed studied Calculus in Year 13 – the only maths that is listed is Statistics, which is much easier.

The Australians have found that their top students do the same thing – they don’t study Calculus because it’s too hard and instead do the easier maths to get higher overall marks.

This shows why Algebra debacles as seen in NZ last year at NCEA One level are so deadly – they turn students off higher level math.

    The thing with higher mathematics such as Calculus is that it expands the thinking processes into the more abstract realms, which is part of why it is so highly valued.
    
    The problem with it, though, is that it’s almost incomphrensible to those whose algebra is weak, and not enough school time is given to strenthening the algebra of younger students so that they can do Calculus.
    
    Too much emphasis on problem solving, in my opinion.

  Because of the cost of lending Jack. You’d think the banks themselves might take a bit of a haircut and make only $1.5 billion each year instead of 3 wouldn’t you, but apparently they don’t want to do that.
  
  According to some, this is “competition in action.” Aren’t some people stooooooooooooooopid.
  
  But I imagine they think the housing stock is at great risk of price down-grade and they could be right there. We’ve never seen housing deflation before, but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.
  
  And because the salary to price median ratio is now at 10, up from 6 which it was when Key’s strategy to lesson the impact of the GFC began in NZ’s biggest and therefore most critical political market, if the overseas demand drops away, we can’t sustain that domestically on our own. So it becomes a vicious cycle, maybe that’s why Key resigned.
  
  One things for sure, in the US the entire establishment will be working 24/7 to sabotage through fair means or foul anything at all Trump puts on the table which will improve that economy, and they won’t give a fuck about what price the American people will pay. Count on that being the reality for the next four years, 100%.
  
  So that’s the backdrop. Maybe they were right.

    There was housing deflation from 2007 to 2009. Around 10% in nominal terms and 15% in real terms.
    
    From 1974 to 1978 there was deflation in real terms of something like 40%, but CPI inflation was running so high that nominal house prices did not fall.
    
    This is actually a potential “solution” as part of an unwinding of the house price bubble we now undeniably have. Large-scale relaxation of the RBNZ’s inflation targets in tandem with banning of urban growth boundaries to ensure that the bubble does not restart due to the easy money.

I’ve said this before as well – Obama’s greatest legacy will be the utter collapse of race relations in America.

There’s been a lot of talk over the past few weeks about Barack Obama’s “legacy.” I think he will be remembered for many things, none of them good, but his greatest legacy is precisely the opposite of the legacy he claimed he would leave: the utter collapse of race relations in this country.

The funny thing is that prior to this great “unifier” making his way in the White House, race relations in America were better than they’d ever been. Better than they were anywhere in the world, even. There wasn’t perfect harmony, of course, but most of us got along OK and there wasn’t a thick atmosphere of racial tension in the air.

Then Obama gets in there, and next thing you know we have race riots and looting and cops getting gunned down by racial crusaders and seemingly every week there’s another race related incident on the front page. Prior to Obama, most in my generation had never seen, or couldn’t remember, anything like this. Obama made things so much worse that I don’t think he could have made them any worse if he’d explicitly tried to do so. And in fact I believe that he did explicitly try to do so, and succeeded.

Obama took advantage of any opportunity to foment racial division. He utilized every tool at his disposal to play identity politics. He took the most localized incidents and turned them into matters of national importance, and he did so on purpose.

He is right. We didn’t have this racial tension under Clinton or Bush. There weren’t the same race riots and groups like Black Lives Matter. Things have gotten 10 times worse under Obama.

Much of Obama’s legacy will be dismantled by the Republicans. The Democrats ignoring the long term cost of losing the Congressional seats, and not willing to compromise more to pull the independent voters they needed to stay legislatively competitive, has put them way down the rabbit hole now.

The Dems can whine all they want, but they hacked Bernie Sanders, pure and simple, with Hillary having her people in the National Committee positions to shaft Bernie, something that barely got a mention in analysis of the loss, and which we know happened from the Wikileaks emails.

He voted for someone who speaks his language and now finds you will that both he and his choice are being ridiculed and abused. Like all folks he has borne these insults, but the tipping point has just about been reached and Joe is now just a tad p’d off. Many of the bikers are ex vets and they are determined to make sure that their guy, person who acknowledges their service and respects them, is going to be protected come what may.And if it means casualties then so be it. I suspect that the Dems and protestors don’t really know what they are up against. The average American is stirring and when this happens he can be full of a terrible resolve. Resignations by MPs has been pronounced since MMP began in 1996, of both of list and constituency MPs.

In the 20 years before MMP began in 1996, there were 14 vacancies – nine caused by resignations of MPs and six by deaths while in office.

In the 20 years since MMP there have been 48 vacancies – 30 of which have been by list MPs resigning, according to data from the Parliamentary Library.

In such cases the list MPs were replaced by the next available candidate on the party list.

Most of the other vacancies were created by the resignation of 15 constituency MPs – more than the nine resignations in the 20 years before MMP.

Two vacancies since MMP were created by deaths of MPs, Green co-leader Rod Donald and Labour MP Parekura Horomia. One MP, Act MP Donna Awatere Huata, was expelled from Parliament.

While at 15 the number of electorate MPs resignations has been higher since MMP, the number of byelections is not much more: eight compared to 10, forced by resignations.

The 10 includes the next one, to be held in Mt Albert on February 25 following David Shearer’s resignation to head the United Nations mission in South Sudan.

Since a law change in 1990, byelections have been avoidable if the resignation is within six months of a general election date announced by the Prime Minister and if 75 per cent of the Parliament agrees.

That happened once before MMP began – in 1996 when Hawkes Bay MP Michael Laws resigned from Parliament in the wake of the Antoinette Beck signature saga.

He had been elected a National MP in 1993 but jumped to New Zealand First during the term.

Since MMP, five byelections have been avoided in that way. But others may be pending.

Prime Minister Bill English has indicated he will follow John Key’s practice of announcing the election date early in the year – possibly an announcement as early as February.

National has six sitting electorate MPs who will not be standing next election but could resign earlier under the six-month law, including Key himself, the MP for Helensville.

Maurice Williamson, the MP for Pakuranga, is set to resign early to take up a posting as New Zealand’s next Consul General in Los Angeles, once an election date in known.

Others in the retirement departure lounge are Murray McCully (East Coast Bays), Chester Borrows (Whanganui), Craig Foss (Tukituki), and Pseta Sam Lotu Iga (Maungakiekie).

At least five list MPs from different parties have given notice of their intention to retire – and could leave before the election. They include: Education Minister Hekia Parata who is due to relinquish her portfolio to Nikki Kaye in May; Labour MP Clayton Cosgrove and Green MPs Catherine Delahunty and Steffan Browning.

About 12 of the total 48 departures since MMP were by MPs going to diplomatic postings or elected international positions, including Paul East, Mike Moore, Sir Don McKinnon, Simon Upton, Graham Kelly, Jonathan Hunt, Brian Donnelly, John Carter, and Sir Lockwood Smith.

About half a dozen MPs left under a cloud of some sort, including Richard Worth, Pansy Wong, Darren Hughes, Aaron Gilmore, John Banks and Mike Sabin.

Two MPs, Tariana Turia and Hone Harawira, resigned from their parties and from Parliament to force a byelection which they contested under their new party banner.

Former clerk of House suggests bond and penalty

Electorate MPs should pay a bond which would be forfeited if they resigned during their term of Parliament, former Clerk of the House of Representatives David McGee says.

He has also suggested a penalty for the resignation of list MPs – not replacing them.

McGee is troubled that resignations of MPs has become increasingly common under MMP, especially of list MPs.

In that way, an already short term of three years becomes an even shorter one.
