Morning all.
Well we have done it.

Not that we really want all they expat jaffa’s and their bloody cars.

Dunedin has been overtaken by Tauranga as the country’s fifth largest city.

I wonder if Simon will now see we get the roading money we deserve so we can have roads like the Naki and Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa?
Suppose not.

Population estimates by Statistics New Zealand reveal Tauranga has overtaken Dunedin’s population of 127,000, clocking in at 128,200 people in 2016.

The southern city’s population increased an estimated 6200 between 1996 and 2016, while booming Tauranga’s population grew by 48,400 over the same period.

And here’s some numbers for the climate nutters.

Temperatures have been recorded in the Tauranga area at several sites during the last 100 years, including the current Tauranga Airport site from June 1990.

The average afternoon temperature in December 2016 was 22.3 degrees Celsius, only 0.1 degrees warmer the average over the last 104 years.

      Prepare to buy some winter clothes. Nice towns down there in Stratford and Eltham, good house prices, no major traffic.
      Even Opanake is growing. New houses there.
      In fact new houses in most of the towns around the North Island.
      People everywhere seem to be up beat about most things.
      Colder than here by several degrees.

        At least Cambridge now has a cheap bypass for all the main road traffic. No tolls either.

      The south Hamilton section to join up at Tamahere-Cambridge section is well past being necessary. Commuting time will be much improved once finished and remove a very annoying, slow moving bottleneck.

      One of the problems is that contrary to the lies of the Greenies, NZ has outlier-low URBAN “major road” space.
      
      European cities have possibly double what we do per capita, and US cities 3 to 5 times as much.
      
      What we have a ridiculous excess of, is rural roads. There are numerous routes, totalling multiple lanes, by which you can get from Fielding to Palmerston North, yet only a single lane by which you can get from Kapiti to Wellington. Exactly the same capacity as there is between every little hicksville in NZ and the remotest, most marginal farms.
      
      Transmission Gully is far too little, far too late. I predict it will suffer breakdown congestion at rush hour right from when it opens. Then the anti-car, anti-freedom activists propaganda machine will swing into action with its meme “that is always the result of too much roads and not enough trains”.
      
      National’s RONS program is only a drop in the bucket of what is needed.

        Agree. I laughed at Marquees last week referring to the RONS as “superhighways”. Right. The Kapiti Expressway is going to be an adequate 4 lane divided road. That’s great but let’s not over egg it .
        
        TG will not fix Wellington morning congestion between Tawa and the city . What is required is widening the motorway from 4 to 6 lanes all the way . And enforcing lane discipline. No you can’t just pick a lane at random and drive at 80.

  You really don’t want roads like the ‘Naki.
  Have you travelled North from New Plymouth?
  Not the worst road I’ve been on, but be prepared to wind you way up and down over hills and through gorges with very few passing opportunities.
  Incredible when you consider that it is pretty much the only way to get North.

    I did include that as a road that needs a fix.
    
    One of the locals told me that recently Simon had to travel to NP by car down that road. Apparently not impressed with it at all. They have hopes.

  No roading money. Auckland needs it – we have been running on fixed up roads for 20 years. Roading should be funded by the percentage of Tax the City pays (population) Tauranga has many retired (no Tax) but hey, Wellington has never ever paid Tax – just gathered it.

Yep and I wonder if Simon will see if we can get a better share of the roading dosh.
We would like roads like they have down the Naki, Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa.

Travelled a lot around this last year and apart from out of Wellington and Auckland the other roads that need attention are Mt Messenger, Taupo to Desert Road, Tauranga to Katikati (about the most dangerous road in NZ by fatalities), Whangaporoa ( a total disgrace), The Kaimai rd, renowned for its truck traffic.
and Northland doesn’t need to complain about one way bridges. Go to the Naki and there are dozens of them and they manage ok.
Eltham needs a truck by pass which Fontera should pay for. Truck and trailers tankers, one after the other, all day and all night.

  They should put a Toll tunnel through the Kaimais on the Tauranga to Hamilton road. This would take most of the trucks off the Paeroa Tauranga road.

      A tunnel is what we need and we need a duplicate rail tunnel so we can feed containers back and forth. Sooner rather than the usual later.
      
      The new Maresk container ships from Sth America to Asia are leaving fully laden. Tga now getting transit from Aussie to Asia.

        A duplicate rail tunnel is not required for ages. USA railroads send enormous tonnages via single track lines (Union Pacific has a massive control centre at Omaha, Nebraska for dispatching their massively long trains), all that is needed is more passing loops and increasing the length of older ones.

      They also have a wider gauge and many more miles of lines without the same height restrictions.
      Rail have been duplicating their lines along the way where they can. Containers now come from allover to Tga because of the big ships and the weekly service to Asia.
      There is also a lot of logs still going thru the port. Too many on trucks especially from the Coromandel and East Cape.

  That traffic bypass for tankers you talk about has been discussed before and shelved due to the fact that in Eltham Fonterra’s factories are just about in the city centre itself so how is a bypass going to work?.
  As for Fonterra bearing the cost of this bypass well if you took Fonterra out of Taranaki a huge portion of the economy disappears so they are already contributing a huge amount which surely would cover this if it was required.
  Stay in Taranaki a couple of months and you won’t even hear the tankers anymore-part of the scenery so to speak.

    The two factories in Eltham are only quite small compared to Hawera.
    Like all these small towns that traffic kills them Cambridge, Te puke are two good examples of how much better the towns have become once that heavy traffic is shifted out.
    Towns are for people not road behemoths. Fontera of course is not all the traffic but probably 50% of the big stuff. Plenty of fuel tankers and big general freight type trucks and refrigerated trucks.. Same problem for Stratford except their road is a bit wider.

SH 2 west of Tauranga is one of the worse roads for crashes and deaths. Little is being done to effectively a single lane from Waihi to Tauranga with a couple of dangerous overtaking lanes.
Yet the Eastern corridor route costing millions has been open a year carrying a fraction of the traffic eastwards. Great toll road but it is west that is needed.
Admittedly the terrain is the opposite of the Eastern road which is flat ex marsh liquefaction land past Te Puke.
For 25 years discussion has taken place re the Western route – land has been designated and a few minor route changes are envisaged in the next few years ?
The western traffic route can only get worse – when schools are in it is chaos for many kilometres as people return to work and schools.

  Been here since 1974 and the road was bad then and has never really improved given the traffic.
  It was a horse and cart track tar-sealed and is very unforgiving. Make a mistake and its in your face immediately.
  I see now that Western Bay are looking to grow the housing for Katikati by 3000 houses. WTF are they thinking. Most of those people will have to use the highway.
  
  But Simon wants the money spent on the golden triangle and that doesn’t include the Tga to Waihi stretch.
  
  And just to rub salt into the wound we are the only city in NZ where we have to pay to enter and pay to leave and pay to travel from one end to the other. If Simon and his mates in Wellington had any principles at all they would either get rid of our toll roads or toll a few more like into Auckland and Wellington.
  Outrageous that if I chose to work in the CBD I pay a toll to go out to the Tauriko end of the motorway but not if I go to Bethlehem nor over the Mount. or Papamoa.
  
  But that’s safe seats with National. Never get what ya should.

        What rot.
        The original bridge was built and paid for by toll money at the bridge.
        We built our own motorway from the original bridge to Waihi rd which was paid for by tolls at the bridge. That wasn’t done until the tolls had paid for our bridge so the only thing the Nats did was allow us legislation to toll the bridge which allowed it to be built (the first bridge.) They then played hard to change when we wanted to build more of our own motorway.
        We eventually overcame the useless twats and got on with the job. Had we not done all these things we would have nothing whilst waiting for the Govt.’s both colours.
        The second bridge was part of Winstons bargaining that allowed Clark to govern.
        
        The place would be a disaster worse than it is without all our own efforts.
        
        Still pisses me that we have to pay tolls when no one else does, even though the road has gone from Council ownership to NZTA.
        
        Didn’t mind when the council owned it.
        Worse thing is that plod now thinks its part of their territory. Before they used to speed down there like the rest of us, now they use it for revenue collecting. Arsewipes.

  Wouldn’t building a kaimai tunnel been a great project for when the economy was flat just after GFC? Maybe the Govt needs to line up some huge infrastructure projects and get designs, consents completed so they can push the go button whenever they need to fill some gaps

      You would put all those containers on trucks and send them along the road to Auckland?
      
      Tga will become the container port for NZ simply because it has already. It has the depth and the ability provided they can keep moving the containers.
      I expect to see the port move more to automation in the next year or two. Lots of transshipment happening and POT has fingers in a few other regional ports to feed into TGA. It also has a shareholding with Fonterra and Silver Fern Farms in Kotare which is about logistics for those two big guys. So captured a huge customer base.
      
      Auckland will eventually be stuffed as they want a pretty waterfront in town so big ships are not going there.

      New Plymouth is basically oil and slowly building log exports. Much of the planting down there was done during the 90’s so is just coming on stream.

      Line needs duplicating in more places and the tunnel needs heightening sdo they can carry higher loads.
      Tunnel is currently undergoing its first major maintenance since it was built.

    NZTA regional director Harry Wilson says one option involves building a road tunnel near the existing rail tunnel, another is building a tunnel near Thompsons Track, between Katikati and Apata. Winston doing what he knows best trying to make the Pike River Mine disaster into another type of Winebox Enquiry. I wonder if he has even thought that most people in NZ have felt for the Family’s over their loss they have had enough and don’t like seeing any group or Politian blackmail the Government after the circus of implementing the Health and Safety Legislation. There are other people in NZ that have had their loved ones struck by work place tragedy and never been compensated with the large sums this group have been paid so is Winston ready to open their case’s so they can have more.

    Reforms that Northland’s economy needed!
    
    If Peters had any principles at all, he would be taking a stand against irrational Green obstructionism of everything, and attacking National for not doing more to wind back the excesses that are occurring in the hands of govt bureaucracies and Councils. He should be saying mines like Pike River should have been open-cast in the first place.
    
    But no, if it is politically expedient, he will go along with continued economic sabotage of the whole country.

      The proposed reforms are wrong but that’s another story.
      I was talking to a builder last week who said the council was breaching its stormwater discharge consent.(volume)
      The answer dreamed up is to make all new houses install a water tank that has a 100mm intake and a 20 mm outlet to choke off discharges.
      Trouble is when there is a downpour it overflows.
      This is adding around $3000 to cost of house.
      Insanity.

  I’m fed up to the back teeth with these Pike River clowns. They have had enough compensation and don’t deserve a cent more. Yes, of course it is a sad tragedy but these happen everyday. There are no bodies to get out and at least they know where they are and can put a memorial up at the entry to visit. Enough is enough. Bernie Monk and Winston Peters can shut up already.

  Having read it on seeing your comment, I’m surprised by your description of it as “nasty”. While I disagree with Roughan on the Waitangi issue, he makes an interesting point in his analysis of English’s ‘tactical’ response to a left-field media question about whether he is a feminist.
  
  The modern “New Zealand Herald” is a poor claimant for the title of this country’s major newspaper. But the opinion commentary it contains is not always as excruciating as, for example, the Saturday offerings from Lizzie Marvelly. Roughan’s views are open to debate, of course, but what he wrote yesterday hardly constituted “a very nasty article against Bill English”.

      There was a photo of the crowd at an All Blacks test from 1908 vs. the British Lions and every man to a T was wearing a suit and hat.
      
      Contrast thay with a modern test where most likely you’ll see tattooed, mulleted, tracksuit wearing morons as standard.
      
      The contrast on dress amongst other things is striking. It’s like the current fuss about wearing pyjamas in the supermarket – that this is even a “debate” shows how far we’ve fallen.

      Also, just for pedants the 1908 team was not known as the “Lions” at the time. That name first applied to the 1924 British tourists to South Africa, and only came into common use with the 1950 tour here. Also, the 1908 team were Anglo-Welsh. Due to issues of the daily allowances paid to the 1905 All Blacks, the Scottish and Irish Rugby Unions declined to participate.

        Because they are adaptable yet also respectful of the past. Also, despite the domestic Irish issues, even in the conflict either side of the Great War that led to the formation of the Irish Free State in 1922, and then in the Troubles, the four “branches” (Ulster, Leinster, Connaught and Munster) of Irish Rugby has always been united and closely aligned with the other three Home Unions. In other words rugby people are not social revolutionaries.
        
        Interestingly, it was the 1930 British team out here, that wore dark blue jersies, white shorts and red socks (the All Blacks had to wear white jersies for the first time to avoid a clash) that was the first to add something to acknowledge a distinct Irish component – the Paddies in the team asked the manager, Bim Baxter to add a green strip of cloth to the top of the socks. He was the British rugby official by-the-way, who helped outlaw the 2-fronted 2-3-2 scrum, and thus abolish the “rover/wing-forward”.
        
        But since 1950 the Lions colours have been red jersey, white shorts, navy blue socks, with an emerald green turnover to reflect the four Home Unions.
        
        Also, great story about Irish and English rugby: As a result of the “Troubles”, Scotland and Wales declined to play in Dublin in 1972 so the five nations championship that year was not awarded. The next year, England were under pressure not to travel across the Irish Sea. They did, and played at Lansdowne Road, and, as was typical of English teams of that era, they lost. However, at the after match function the English captain and hooker, John Pullin, got up and started his after-dinner speech with “We may not be very good…but at least we turn up”.
        
        First time in history the people of Dublin would have willingly made an Englishman a freeman of the city on the spot! 😉

    You are talking about the entertainers in less dignified settings, such as the pub, the village square, and the “theatre”, are you not? A “chorus girl” was a classic trope of literature, for being the cause of a scandal when a gentleman was associated with her.

  I have one question for those who attribute blame for the outcome on Putin. If all that Putin’s munchkins did was to hack and release the content of Hillary’s email, isn’t it more likely that the electorate didn’t like what the lady was saying in private?
  Are they saying that she was entitled to hide the fact that she and her campaign were donkey deep in all kinds of sleaze (probably on a par with Trump who spewed his sleaze gratuitously without the need for hacking)?

If a Russian diplomat in the capital of any Western country had tried to engage in underhand antics like Israel’s ‘Senior Political Officer’ in London there would be massive journalistic fandangos in American and British media. The West’s television channels would be near meltdown with hysterical condemnation of the threat to democracy and there would be prolonged and frenzied anti-Russian outbursts in their halls of government.

But when Israel schemes to ‘take down’ a respected British Government minister with the assistance of a British government official, and the Israeli ambassador apologises for being found out, the British ignore insult, injury, contempt and condescension, and declare that ‘The UK has a strong relationship with Israel and we consider the matter closed.’

It is amazing what money can buy.

The US President is an inescapably partisan politician, which means much of the electorate would have voted against them. Not a good mix, and no wonder at times like this, after a bitter and protracted election campaign, US citizens struggle to unite around their president, irrespective of the identity and politics of the office-holder.
      
      That’s the problem with an “elected monarch”, whether they are bestowed with 18th Century powers with checks and balances as per the American Constitution…or simply an elected figure head. “President Helen Clark” would be too divisive.

        Possibly, although it may also have reflected the fact that, other than for one-off events such as Jefferson’s Louisiana Purchase and Lincoln fighting the Civil War to save the Union, the Presidency was not directly relevant to the lives of most Americans before the “New Deal”. And that’s when the President, rather than one’s local ward official, congressman, senator or governor became more important.
        
        I remember reading a joke FDR made against himself. Every day a Long Island millionaire would look at the front page of his paper and exclaim with disappointment, “He’s still with us”. On one occasion, on being told that the obituaries were in the back, the millionaire replied “if and when the son-of-a-bitch I’m interested in dies, it’ll be on the front page!”

  Progressive people live in the clouds, they want touchy-feely shit that makes no real material difference and they spend 90-99% of their time thinking about ways to deliver that and 9-1% of the time thinking about ways to deliver material shit which is the only thing people actually give a fuck about.
  
  They can’t admit that of course, not publicly and I doubt that any of them ever looks in the mirror and admits it either. Those of us however who don’t have a vested interest in not discovering that what they’ve devoted a whole hell of a lot of thinking and doing time to over the years has been a complete waste of time, can see this straight away, it’s clear and present.
  
  The amusing thing is because progressives operate from a flawed understanding of human behaviour and motivation (e.g. look at how they don’t understand markets and crime drivers), even the tiny amount of time they devote to things material always produce sub-optimal results.
  
  But recently this trend is because people’s material lives have been becoming progressively bleaker all over the Western world, that we are seeing this switch to something different.
  
  Notice the people are not switching to standing alternate – the conservative parties in each country. No, they’re going elsewhere. This is because they’ve tried the GoP/Tories/etc before, and they’ve been at least as bad if not worse than the idiots on the other side, is the people’s calculation.
  
  But because progressives are idealists they will never change, plus they have a built in flaws in their thinking, which will prevent them from ever achieving success with this new movement we’re witnessing.

Something I read yesterday on Kissinger puts a lot of things into place.

Kissinger wrote his doctoral thesis on the British Empire’s Balance of Power geopolitics. This was the way the Brits rolled from the 1700’s on. They exploited an alliance which collectively was stronger than they by allying with the weaker partner then once the alliance was destroyed and the stronger one subdued, it would then turn on the weaker one too.

This was why Kissinger did his China trips in the 70’s, because at that time China was the weaker in the Sino-Soviet alliance.

This is what Trump is now doing with Russia. Same plan. But they’ve perceived this time, it’s Russia whose the weaker.

    Yep. The British were amenable to it as it enabled them to remain in “splendid isolation”, and they only had to intervene on the European Continent if and when a power, such as Napoleon’s France, or Tsarist Russia, or the Kaiser’s or Hitler’s Germany, became too dominant.
    
    So Kissinger’s academic insights played a part. But he only served at the pleasure of a President, Nixon, whose negotiating and triangulating skills were learned…playing poker in the Solomon Islands during World War II.
    
    I get the impression Trump has many of those same skills. But time will tell if his use of tactics has any overall strategic objective as Nixon did…or if it is just to elevate Trump’s own personal brand. I’m a doubter…

      Just as an addendum, it is one of the self-promoting myths that Kissenger sought to cultivate, right from the time he joined Nixon’s staff as a National Security Advisor – not Secretary of State – that he was the author and primary mover of American Foreign policy. So he undermined the Secretary of State, Bill Rogers, and downplayed Nixon and sought to embarrass him with gossip, and portray stuff like the Paris Peace talks and the opening to China as his initiatives. Nixon knew it, but as he wanted the results and deemed Kissenger useful, he tolerated it. Plus he wanted a voice that was not beholden to the State Department.
      
      But Kissenger, with his cultivation of Daniel Ellsberg, who leaked the Pentagon Papers, and his (Kissenger’s) hysterical reaction at the time (“Mr President, we cannot conduct a successful foreign policy when our secrets are being revealed”) was the crucial event that helped contribute to the Nixon Whitehouse’ siege mentality…that led to the formation of the Plumbers..which resulted in Watergate.

Then you have this story about CNN being sold as part of the Trump deal to approve the Time-Warner acquisition.

Then we have the $600 million cloud-computing contract the CIA gave to Bezos just after he bought WaPo, and one wonders what Trump is going to direct the CIA to do with that too, doesn’t one.

        A US counterintelligence task force was established by the CIA in 2016 to investigate possible Russian funding of President-elect Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, the BBC reported on Friday.
        
        The task force included the FBI, the Treasury and Justice Departments, the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the National Security Agency (NSA).
        
        It was set up after the director of the CIA, John Brennan, received a recording of a conversation about money from the Kremlin going into Trump’s campaign coffers, the BBC’s Paul Wood reported. The recording was passed to him by the intelligence agency of one of the Baltic States, according to the BBC.
        
        On October 15, the task force was granted a warrant by a judge in the FISA court — named after the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act — to intercept the electronic records from two Russian banks that may have been implicated in the money transfer, a senior intelligence official told the BBC. Trump was not named in the warrant, but three of his associates were the subject of the inquiry.
