The USA took 230+ years to rack up its first $10 trillion in debt and less than 8 years for its second $10 trillion – Yet the MSM were warning us pre-election that it was Trump who posed a grave threat to America’s financial health!

Now, remove 8 zeros and pretend it’s a household budget.

· Annual Family Income: $21,700

· Money the Family Spent: $38,200

· New Debt on Credit Card: $16,500

· Outstanding Balance on Credit Card: $142,710

What cannot last will not last. But who’ll be left standing when the music stops?

    I don’t see any plans to spend up. Perhaps you are confusing him with Bernie and Clinton?
    
    Cutting key taxes is a good thing to do because that helps stimulate the economy (in a good way) and thus reduces state dependence (costs) as well as build more revenue (more business = more people/businesses paying tax).
    
    The most important thing to do with tax is simplify the tax laws. Just doing a really simple US tax return is harder than doing a relatively complicated tax return in NZ.

      He plans to spend trillions on infrastructure (hasn’t explained how this will be done)
      
      He plans to spend billions on a stupid wall (….oh Mexico will pay for it…snigger)
      
      He plans to strengthen the military.
      
      Even if his fantastical notion that he can magically increase growth to 4% were true, he still falls massively short and has to Borrow to achieve even a fraction of this given his massive tax cuts

      It’s a bit hard to figure out what Trump is going to do the way he’s backtracking on various campaign promises, but he has promised to spend money on the wall, deporting an indeterminate number of migrants, infrastructure, veterans and a lot on defense. All that from decreased government income, so I understand.
      By the way flitting back & forth between two homes won’t be cheap for the taxpayer

    I have little confidence in Trump’s economic policy.
    
    But the total budget deficit for 2001-2008 under Bush was 2 trillion. For 2009-2016 it was 7.3 trillion – more than half of the current total.
    
    Electing a Republican instead of a Democrat is a good start.

  His popularity is rising and so as long as he delivers on the important stuff like jobs and immigration he should be fine. Obama by comparison was a good orator, but was all talk and no do. Trump is not a smooth talker but he may well deliver what he promised.

  Maybe Trump has found out the reality of Clinton’s health ( also Bill doesn’t look that healthy) and decided to take a humane approach. As for the Foundation –that is probably going to “die a slow death” as donors realise what has been going on ( Norway has already made major cutbacks).
  Also Jonar , Trump is still fundamentally a businessman. In business you have to change direction at times, be pragmatic and usually you don’t have an ideology to stick to because you want to get things done , not just talk about them

      Stumbled ? Like when she was bundled into that van ? That wasn’t pneumonia because if it was she should most certainly not have had contact with a vulnerable child (in a staged piece of street theatre) immediately afterwards.
      
      I’m disappointed though, but not unexpectedly so, Clinton owns a lifetime “get out of Jail free” card. I was hoping for an independent prosecutor, so just for once we could have a proper investigation uncontaminated by partisanship.

        Mikenmild, no, he did not say that. He said he would institute a proper independent investigation; and in a further response to Clinton, said “because you would be in Jail” with the clear connotation that the investigation would find her guilty.
        
        He didn’t say he would jail her, but that a proper investigation would be sure to find crimes to prosecute.

      I have much the same concerns as you re Trump but surely this is damned if you do, damned if you don’t.
      
      Perhaps some of his supporters were serious when they were chanting, “Lock her up. Lock her up” – or perhaps it was just the sort of tribal, pandering bullshit you get at political rallies. How many times did I hear “Bush lied. People died”, followed by demands and expectations of he and Cheney being “perp-walked” after Obama’s ascension to the throne.
      
      Didn’t happen. If Trump went after her post Jan 20 it could start a Roman Empire-like cycle of vengence that would do nobody any good.
      
      The judgement on her – with this as a significant factor – was made by the voters, as I think Comey intended back in July. Good enough.

        And millions of Obama voters were quite happy to ignore the collapse of the bullshit claim, “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. if you like your Doctor, …., not to mention the other claims from the stump, because they approved they figured that at least Obamacare advanced them down the field towards a US NHS.
        
        So it goes with politics. The heart rules the head.
        
        I’m more concerned with the damage that will be caused to the USA by not tackling the Social Security-Medicare/Medicaid tsunami, things that I have no doubt Trump will keep his word on not touching. That’s an area where I would fully approve of a flip-flop, but it would be “damaging” – as in thermo-nuclear bomb damaging – to any politician who went down that road.
        
        At this stage – in 2016 – I think the US is just going to have to crunch it on those programs. The Millenials and their following cohorts, will simply cut them back circa 2050, when the Boomers are mostly gone anyway and the system’s delivering 30 cents on the dollar. Too late but {“shrugs”}, that’s humans for you.

        Tom, I’d still rather that he appointed an independent prosecutor, and as far as is possible in the partisan world, a genuinely independent one. I think the principle “no matter how high you are, the law is higher” (although that’s Lord Denning in the UK) is a principle that cannot be over-emphasized.
        
        I’d have the investigation into three specific issues for a start, the classified information on her eMail server and who had access to it; the release of eMails subject to FOI and the Perjury issue in her declaration; and Obstruction of Justice around the final eMail deletion. Existing evidence unequivocally shows that she is guilty of the last two and no one, but no one, has been able to truthfully assert otherwise. As such, I find it offensive that she is allowed to walk free of such premeditated serious crimes.

        I agree Ed, but it’s “perfect world” stuff. If Trump did that, the degree of partisan politics that now exists means the Democrats would just oppose it full-stop, and even if it reached the stage of prosecution it would still be partisan. The trial would likely take a year or two, and the Trump administration would be distracted by this bullshit every single day. The likes of Chuck Schumer would love it.
        
        So, no. It’s rat swallowing I know, but I think the lesson has been learned by Democrat insiders, judging from the emails of many who also thought her private server idea was “nuts”.

  It’s very clever of him. By saying he won’t prosecute then there is now no need for Obama to issue a preemptive pardon- without it looking completely suspicious.
  But of course after Obama has gone, who is to say that the FBI finds sufficient evidence to then prosecute her…

        Don’t be dense mikenmild, the President is effectively the AG’s superior, and although the AG is supposed to be above politics, Trump could certainly take a leaf from the Obama playbook and make his wishes on the appointment known and expect to have them followed. If not a prosecutor, a Grand Jury would work as well.

    I don’t understand why people think being a fanatical ideologue with an entrenched position on every issue is a good thing in a politician. To me it just makes you an inflexible and unthinking human being with a closed mind.
    
    Trump has more flexibility and freedom to move than almost any president since the second world war. He isn’t beholden to established interests and his promises during the campaign were mostly just vague statements of intent. What the media breathlessly report as “flip-flopping” is mostly him getting up to speed on the issues and making up his mind. I don’t think it is a bad thing that his mind wasn’t already made up or that he changes it. As long as he doesn’t change his bedrock promise of putting America first in all his decisions his supporters won’t mind.
    
    Many of his supporters have very low expectations of him anyway, quite the opposite of Obama whose supporters thought he could walk on water and would deliver the Sun Moon and Stars. Obama had an impossible job living up to his own image. It won’t be hard for Trump to exceed expectations.

After listening to Paul Henry on the Hub this morning and his thoughts on Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. He promised his Country and it’s people that he would use the the death penalty to rid it of drug users and it’s distributers and has kept his promise with over five thousand meeting their keeper.So I had a thought that i think would help him get elected as Prime Minister that would beat any Policy that he has put foward so far.I would to suggest to Andrew that if he promised to rid New Zealand of all inept,bias and corrupt Journalists he would have more chance of becoming the PM than any policy he is campaigning on now

I think we do have to give Trump a chance. His promise of cutting taxes and regulations is very likely to kickstart the US economy and bring back jobs and get the whole economy moving again.
He does have to do something about entitlement spending that’s true.
One thing he will do is repeal and replace Obama care which is a massive drain on the economy. Putting in place something much more affordable will also help the balance of payments.

There is going to be a lot of infrastructure spending and he will build a wall so that will cost a lot of money. However the infrastructure spending can be seen as an investment and building a wall and securing the border will save the American taxpayer millions of dollars in the long run. The cost of illegal immigration on such things as hospitals and schools is immense.

But I repeat we have to give him a chance. Obama had 8 years and in that time did what all leftists do which is spend money like a drunken sailor on shore leave. Under his watch the national debt went from $10 trillion to $20 trillion.

Scott predicts that the US economy will boom in the next 4 years. This will enable much of the national debt to be repaid. I also predict this will be good for the New Zealand economy.

Lastly I look forward to the demise of Isis in the next 4 years. It’s about time those savages got their comeuppance.

    My understanding is that he has incurred more debt than all of the other presidents of the United States combined.
    The idea that leftists are worrying about the debt now that Trump is about to take office is absurd. Leftists never cared a jot about the debt while Obama was spending money wildly. Now that you have a businessman coming into office suddenly find that you care about the debt!

I am too late to comment on the Pike River Mine closure blog, but could I just say that , in my opinion, if there are a couple of members of that community who are prepared to enter the mine why not let them, providing they sign a waiver agreeing that no-one will sue the government or anyone else should entering the mine cause their deaths. I mean people take risks every day, so why not let someone take the risk of entering that mine?

The kerfuffle over the cast of Hamilton lecuring VP-elect Pence will soon fade and be forgotten. But before it is there are a couple of articles that nail the issue.

First up is this list of Tweets, Facebook’s, Photos and so forth, where the cast “fan-girling over Hillary. Take a look at this collection of vomit-inducing slobbering.

This is not ideological, even around identity politics; Hillary gets the hugs from gay cast members despite her having “evolved” on gay marriage recently (same with Obama), whereas Trump was cool with it at least as far back as the late 1990’s, but gets no love from this group.

This is partisanship, pure and simple.

Oh, the actors might rush to say that “Republicans are all welcome” to their play. But creative people in a medium as visual and impactful as theatre know very well the net results of this political grandstanding.

“If you don’t agree with us on politics, you’re going to be lectured to and publicly shamed,” is the message conservatives, Republicans and anyone who wasn’t #WithHer received from this little episode, whether that was the actors’ intent or not.

He’s being too kind in that last and it contradicts his previous point: it was their intent and they know exactly what they’re doing.

I heard from an actor who pointed out that the performers on stage are in the most prominent position of privilege the industry could ever provide an actor. They appear in the hottest play in the country and have a steady Actor’s Equity contract with full benefits along with a job for the next decade, if they want it.

The idea that these well-paid thespians represent “the diverse America” that is concerned with the direction of the country is absurd, this actor said. They represent the elite not just in this country, but in their own industry. It wasn’t lost on this actor friend of mine that these cast members live a far better lifestyle than the Americans they claim to represent.

Ding, ding, ding, ding,…..

Indeed I can tell you from first hand experience that in the theatre industry diversity is only skin-deep and genital-high. It’s the superficial and irrelevant differences of race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality that the members of the theatre community obsess over, not the more important and challenging intellectual diversity of opinions that they reject and ignore.

The point I made the other day – which was explicitly rejected by one of the Left-wing commentators here. We’re a long way from Martin Luther King’s dream of being judged by the content of our characters rather than our cosmetics. Which leads to this:

I am thinking about the actor who stood on that stage disagreeing with the spectacle unfolding before him. I am thinking about the musician who may have voted for Gary Johnson. Or the usher who saw their health care costs skyrocket due to Obamacare. Or the stage hand whose son is in the Marines and he wants a Commander-in-Chief who will fight the war on terror in a vigorous and effective way.

They are silent. Nobody hears their voice because nobody at the Richard Rogers Theatre (or any other theatre on Broadway) cares to listen to their voice. They’ve been told that their voice is not welcome. They’ve been told that they are to stay silent if they want to keep their careers.

The number of “unfriendings” in recent days between people that my wife has observed on her Facebook page is staggering. And she long ago learned to keep her opinions to herself, even though she hates Trump.

My former colleagues in the theatre industry claim they want to foster discussion and they hope for a dialogue about these issues, but they are being disingenuous, at best. They don’t want a dialogue, they want a monologue.

That’s what we saw on Friday night from the stage on 46th street. A monologue. A speech. A lecture. It was patronizing and it was condescending and there was no room for rebuttal.

Or as another person put it: They talk. You listen.

It’s a real shame because over the last year I’ve really been enjoying the whole Hamilton success. I even got my daughter and several of her teenage friends onto it and they’ve got to the point of singing some of their favourite bits in school classrooms – more “Buzzfeed memes” I am informed. Of course they’re studying Level 3 NCEA History and their topic is the American Revolution so…

And it has been great to see a “diverse” cast perform a musical that actually celebrates the Founding Fathers, rather than the Old Dead White Racist Male excoriation that’s been the standard for the past thirty years. So yay! American taking steps forward.

She made a rather cutting comment to Mike Hosking at shift change about it not being a good look for Labour who were trying to get their message out.

Even Twit Twyford who was standing in for Moon Beam this morning on the Mike Hosking show could not help but make a fool of himself when discussing the Kaikoura EQs. Rather than taking a bipartisan approach he made smart anti National comments that were quickly smacked down by Joyce.

Starting from knowing nothing about social media and how it could be used, to basically out smarting Schmidt from Google/Alphabet who had all the resources of Silicon Valley available to him, plus hundreds of millions of dollars.

  NZ is instead building export industry on the back of cheap, imported labour. This has caused the relatively poor progress of NZ in productivity, which is measured on labour as a base.
  
  Think this is just temporary immigration? Look what happened to California with temporary agricultural workers from Mexico. They have followed temporary work visits with permanent settlement, legal and illegal. The Mexicans became a very big, politically powerful portion of the state’s population.
  
  It’s also socialistic, in that taxpayers support the temporary immigrants with health and regulatory supervision costs.

I think the problem is that they need skilled people now, not in 3 years. But I agree that our apprenticeship system is a disgrace. Every kid I know is out getting a generally worthless degree or looking for a non-existent job in the media or marketing. The wealthiest people I know are those who got into a trade straight from school and then parlayed that into employing others. It’s the old rule; selling your own time will never make you rich.

  Chinese workers are not skilled. They are poorly trained, 3rd-world-ignorant (Chinese govt treats them like mushrooms), mostly poorly motivated, are lazy/half-arsed about everything they do and for labouring classes will struggle to gain even basic english skills/literacy due to the extreme foreignness of alphabetic language that requires use of grammer (that they have never formed the necessary brain path-ways to enable undrestanding/adaptions).
  
  There are probably a billion people in the world who would bring better skills and adapt better to NZ. Eastern and Southern Europe, Mexico, Phillipines, Thailand, India, Mongolia (super smart), and parts of asia where english is common.

  This is quite an interesting development, Stars and Stripes. The Richardson Group is in transport and trucking in a big way, and has Allied Petroleum as well as Allied Concrete.
  
  It is a generous company. It has created a huge truck collection which is on display in Invercargill, and has just bought the big Nelson motorcycle collection and set it up in buildings it bought for it Invercargill.
  
  The Richardsons were and are decent folk. They will be making a conscience-based stand rather than caving in for fear of consequences.

But wait, there’s more !! I watched one tall thin brown moron woman in big heels carry three wine bottles – by the necks – two in one hand. Fark – you *know* what’s coming next. Maori protesters sticking their noses into the pipeline row in North Dakota may get themselves into something serious.

Maori TV says the six have been at a camp helping protesters injured in clash with police.

This is from the Washington Times:

“But law enforcement said Tuesday that officers never used grenades — they threw flash bangs, sometimes called ‘stun grenades,’ which are designed to produce bright light and loud noise but not inflict serious injury.

“The injuries sustained are inconsistent with any resources utilized by law enforcement and are not a direct result of any tools or weapons used by law enforcement,” North Dakota Highway Patrol Lt. Tom Iverson said in a statement. “This incident remains under investigation .”

Already, however, investigators say they have found materials behind the protest line used to make Molotov cocktails, including 1-pound propane cylinders, glass bottles and rocks.

During the melee, officers say they heard an explosion at 3 a.m. Monday as they tried to flush two men and a woman behind a plywood barricade who were attempting to “hide their activity.” After the explosion, protesters pulled a woman from under a burned vehicle and fled the scene.

“The subjects were given opportunities to retreat back, but it became obvious that they were tampering with the vehicle or planting a device,” said Lt. Iverson. “Their strange mannerisms led law enforcement to believe they were there for a purpose with a calculated effort to either cause harm or breach the line.”

I was watching Kanoa Lloyd on MediocreWorks – wow – she looks great in her long red heavy industrial office chair fabric dress with the front split. That’s a lot of red on a lot of lovely lady.

But what I really want is a muslim woman presenting the weather in her full black tablecloth, head covering and veil. I can’t let enough of those women into NZ. That’s how you celebrate diversity. We need a govt funded alternative channel to celebrate diversity – with a different breed presenting each day.
