I went to a club’s annual general meeting last night. Much time was spent trying to comprehend the meaningless mish mash of numbers presented pursuant to the new Public Benefit Entities accounting standards.
Who writes that tripe?
Much time was spent on discussing non financial liabilities. One wag stopped that discussion with the rhetorical question;
“Is a non financial liability a verbose euphemism for a wife?”
Once upon a time I could understand financial statements. Not any more.

  And then Health & Safety should have been on the agenda. All responsible meetings must include workplace health, liability insurance and a host of other ‘compliances’, especially if local body money is involved. I decided to relinquish my membership of a certain community Trust as it became a risky and onerous task. This whole bloody country is being choked by petty regulations.

      Then the law is obviously an ass. I’m livid that this abortion of a piece of legislation was implemented by a National govt – expensive, wasteful, destructive of small businesses (I know people who have closed businesses due to the increased compliance costs imposed) and personal freedoms for almost no benefit. Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert, has been one of the more interesting observers of the current race for President. He is clearly now fed up, and I can’t help but wonder how many voters quietly share his sentiment?

“I’ve been trying to figure out what common trait binds Clinton supporters together. As far as I can tell, the most unifying characteristic is a willingness to bully in all its forms.

If you have a Trump sign in your lawn, they will steal it.

If you have a Trump bumper sticker, they will deface your car.

if you speak of Trump at work you could get fired.

On social media, almost every message I get from a Clinton supporter is a bullying type of message. They insult. They try to shame. They label. And obviously they threaten my livelihood.

We know from Project Veritas that Clinton supporters tried to incite violence at Trump rallies. The media downplays it.

We also know Clinton’s side hired paid trolls to bully online. You don’t hear much about that.

Yesterday, by no coincidence, Huffington Post, Salon, and Daily Kos all published similar-sounding hit pieces on me, presumably to lower my influence. (That reason, plus jealousy, are the only reasons writers write about other writers.)

Joe Biden said he wanted to take Trump behind the bleachers and beat him up. No one on Clinton’s side disavowed that call to violence because, I assume, they consider it justified hyperbole.

Team Clinton has succeeded in perpetuating one of the greatest evils I have seen in my lifetime. Her side has branded Trump supporters (40%+ of voters) as Nazis, sexists, homophobes, racists, and a few other fighting words. Their argument is built on confirmation bias and persuasion. But facts don’t matter because facts never matter in politics. What matters is that Clinton’s framing of Trump provides moral cover for any bullying behavior online or in person. No one can be a bad person for opposing Hitler, right?”

    Mark wasn’t an army cook. He joined the Army as a teenager and trained as a mechanic. He rose from the ranks to lieutenant.
    
    He did try to join the SAS, and you can read about that at the link below, and then served with the Sultan of Oman’s Army, and with the Sultan’s special forces, presumably in the capacity of a mechanical officer.
    
    “Happychappy” and “RF” shouldn’t sneer at Mark’s service unless they have been in the army themselves, and as more than three-month CMT trainees.
    
    Otherwise, we might conclude they are working off some intra-party or inter-party grudge.

        Fair point about people, myself included, dissing Mark’s mechanic background (mechanics and logistical support is important to sustain an Army, without them there would be no fighting army)!
        
        My beef is he is still an uninformed, smarmy buffoon, doing NZFirst no favours when uses the NZDF to beat up the Govt (because he can’t even get his facts right about the NZDF eg he is misquoting/misrepresenting the NZDF), in other words he comes across as hollow, exploitative as in using others, incorrectly, to make his point.
        
        BTW I have voted (party vote) NZFirst before but won’t be fooled again by their charlatan bauble seeking leader nor his smarmy deputy. If they pulled their heads in and started acting constructively, instead of proving all they are good for is being a lazy, attacking opposition party, I possibly could rethink offering them some support, but every time Ron Mark speaks he puts his foot into mouth so I see they will never change as they sleepwalk to power behaving with that “born to rule” arrogance they supposedly despise whilst applying that label to everyone else.

      I spent 20 years as a Regular Force soldier [including a tour as a Rifleman in Vietnam during 1969] and another 7 in Territorial Force. None of the people that I served with would ever comment publicly on any military matter outside of their field of expertise.
      I can share that in early November 1967, I and around 90 others were stranded overnight in Alice Springs when the 2 year old C130 Hercules taking us to Malaysia broke down. We had to wait for another aircraft to complete our trip. Sound familiar?
      So what makes a Commissioned Vehicle Mechanic an expert on B757’s? Or strategic military matters?

        Harlequin, Mark is the spokesman for a political party, and it’s perfectly in order for him to speak on matters of defence such as what he believes are the state of aircraft.

  The opportunist Dean Lonergan is spinning our elected government with little subtlety, but with a very good chance that he will hit the show-biz jackpot. A demeaning lolly scramble – all to be seen as our Government ‘supporting’ a shady professional activity that not one in 50 New Zealanders care a damn about.

  Nothing I heard Steven Joyce say made me think he would actually support this application. What he did was diplomatically answer reporters’ questions without seeming to give a yes or no reply. Exactly as you would expect a skilled politician to do. I seriously doubt any money will be given to Duco – they are too much focused on making money, not sport, and boxing is too corrupt to be considered for taxpayer funding.

  Lonergan is an 18 stone thug who was on Hauraki breakfast in the mid 1990s. He started as news reader then talked over the top of everyone. The show collapsed. Prior to that Leah Panapa held her own with ‘the boys’ .

  Ummmm – people from Puerto Rico have always been freely able to move to the USA. That’s because the former is a US Territory.
  
  Of course the reason so many are suddenly moving is the fantastically screwed up economy of Puerto Rico, as written about here by George Will earlier this year, with a very prophetic title.
  
  What happens in Puerto Rico won’t stay there:
  
  Puerto Rico’s approximately 18 debt-issuing entities have debts — approximately $72 billion — they cannot repay. The Government Development Bank might miss a $422 million payment due in May, and the central government might miss a $2 billion payment in July. Congress will not enact a “bailout,” meaning an infusion of U.S. taxpayers’ money.
  
  Now if we just make the racial assumption that the ethnicity here means an automatic vote for the Democrat Party, then yes, the GOP is fucked.

Well if National help fund Duco and the world boxing fight they are only helping the same people that are running a constant campaign against them on Housing,poverty and the poor and giving them more ammunition to fire at the Government and their Policy’s.What the Government need to understand is the people that will want to complain that they want to see this fight will not vote national and will still protest and make a noise about how they again are supporting the top 1%.I am against the Government giving any funds to help promoters have this fight in NZ

In the same survey, only 41 percent of Trump supporters say they are voting for him, while 54 percent say they are mostly voting against Clinton. He will be bringing all our soldiers home and sending over brigades of union officals to help with reconstruction, no doubt lead by the chief of the SAS major general Ron Mark.

It’s saying “sh” for “s” when saying “st”.

We hear “conshtruction” rather than “construction” and “shtrong” for “strong”.

One of the early “sht” speakers is John Key. Most of the others I’ve noticed are younger folk.

How long before a young cop yells: “Shtop! Shtop or I shoot!”

        The problem is, Fletch, that other potential human life is inside another person’s (admittedly merely a woman or girl’s) body.
        In many cases we have to consider the well-being of who is here first.
        (A bit like we are entitled to consider the well-being of Kiwis first, before we bring in thousands of people from overseas who want to live here.)
        There is also the issue of quality of life.
        Most couples could have 20 kids if they tried. ..but most people consider that would be pretty harsh on the earlier few children, not to mention the planet etc.

It appears electronic voting in the US has been hacked by Democrats in some booths. A vote for Republicans suddenly becomes a vote for Democrats, as has happened in many cases now being disclosed. The voter has to ask a supervisor to change the vote back to Republican. Those pushing for electronic voting in NZ should just quietly go away.

  Although we hear many progressive laments today about how Republicans are against immigrants— an allegation supported by nothing more than opposition to illegal immigration— in reality no one has attacked immigrants with the venom of progressives.
  
  In fact, the progressive assault on immigrants in the 1920s was unprecedented and had far-reaching consequences. America had long been considered a magnet for immigrants. Hundreds of thousands of Irish, Italians, and Jews came to America in the nineteenth century, and these groups helped build America. Immigration levels were just as high in the early twentieth century. More than four hundred thousand immigrants came to America each year from 1900 to 1920.
  
  But progressives hated immigration largely because they hated the types of immigrants whom they saw entering the country. Sanger’s main cause was birth control, but she too eagerly backed immigration curbs for “unfit” populations. Sanger argued that America should “keep the doors of immigration closed to the entrance of certain aliens whose condition is known to be detrimental to the stamina of the race, such as the feebleminded, idiots, morons, the insane, syphilitic, epileptic, criminal, professional prostitutes, and others.” 13
  
  Progressive influence was instrumental in the passage of the Immigration Act of 1924. From the outset Sanger supported the law, but her public endorsement of restrictive immigration came later, in a speech in 1932 titled “My Way to Peace.” Nevertheless, for the first time in American history, laws were passed that systematically barred people from entry and established quotas based on race and national origin.
  
  White immigrants were preferred over immigrants of color, and northern Europeans were preferred over southern Europeans. Of course there were laws that restricted Chinese immigration in the nineteenth century. These were anomalous, however, and there were no laws that curtailed immigration from Europe.
  
  The 1924 law put even most Europeans on the unwanted list. The effect was immediate. In the period from 1925– 1939, immigration levels dropped to around twenty-five thousand a year, an astonishing 95 percent decline from earlier levels. Progressive “reform” had won the day. This “reform,” however, had dangerous consequences.
  
  During the 1930s there were last-ditch efforts to waive some of the restrictions of the 1924 Immigration Act in order to grant asylum to Jews whose lives were in mortal danger from the Nazis. These were not Jewish applications that came through the mail from Germany. The issue was far more pressing. Almost a thousand German Jews waited desperately in a ship off the coast of Florida, seeking a life-saving approval of their immigration papers. Progressives like Harry Laughlin— a director of the Birth Control League and close ally of Sanger— resolutely opposed entry to the U.S. by these Jews.
  
  In his report, Immigration and Conquest, Laughlin sought to prove that Jews were hard to assimilate and that they would cause a “breakdown in the race purity of the superior stocks.” 14 In a sense, American progressives like Laughlin were tacitly collaborating with the Nazis who obviously did not want the Jews to escape to the United States. As a consequence of progressive resistance, the Nazis got their wish and the ship was sent back to Germany.

    Allowing people to make money means we lose site of the good in the name of profit. This means Americans as a group are worse of than in country’s where the government runs a single payer not for profit health care system.

Unbelievable –

Thousands of California soldiers are being forced to repay large bonuses that were given to them a decade ago for reenlisting and going to war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The bonus of $15,000 or more was offered as an enticement by the California National Guard, but now the Pentagon is demanding the money back after an audit revealed they were overpaid.

If they refuse, the nearly 10,000 soldiers this affects will be hit with interest charges, tax liens, and wage garnishments.

The more I study the cost of health insurance in the USA the more I wonder how any average wage earner can afford it.

1) What we would call an “excess” except that it is calculated on a year’s worth of claims…..”Families in high-deductible plans must pay more than $2,600 out of pocket, $4,332 on average, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.”……

2) …..”Once workers have surpassed their deductibles, they pay an average $24 copay for a primary care office visit, $37 for a specialty care office visit, and $308 for a hospital admission.”…..

3) ….”employees with family coverage pay $413 a month on average. That’s because employers require workers to cover a greater part of the cost of insuring an entire family. On average, employers pay 82% of the premium costs for single coverage, but only 71% of the premium costs for family coverage”…….

4) The gross wage for a check out chick in Montana is about $7/hr US.
