Captain Mainwaring

Four young Indian chaps have moved into the renta-house next door. They seem like good guys but they struggle with the concept that grass keeps growing if you don’t mow it. I offered to mow it for them but they said they’d bought a mower and would do it themselves.
I have yet to see or hear their mower and the grass is now about a foot long.
I suggested to Mrs. Mainwaring that I should put a sign on their front verge saying: “Welcome to the Ganges Delta. Beware of Tigers,” but she said that wouldn’t be a good idea.
What should I do?

  Welcome to the attitude that exists through most of the world that runs from about the Persian gulf across to the east coast of China – and that is that they dont give a rats arse about anything their surroundings. Thats why this part of the world I call ” a shithole”. Its mostly dirty and filthy and dangerous to life. And I wish they didnt bring their attitudes with them when they escape the mess of where they were born in and come to places like NZ.
  
  As for the grass – wait until mid summer when it will be long and dry and then one day when they are all home throw a match into it – then run to their door and tell them what some passerby has done and that they had better get off their arse and save themselves. Tell them the passerby looked like one of them – maybe they have relation problems……maybe someone insulted someones sister or something…….
  
  Ive did exactly this some years ago to a group of lazy bums and believe me they get the message rather quickly…..especially when you ask them if they have tenants insurance because they will be up for the costs if the house is damaged…….

    But the “Tea Party” such as it was (it was never a centrally organised thing, very much locally based) was a polite protest that wanted less intrusive government, lower spending in general and with that lower taxes. Polite and tidy, they were noted as leaving places where they held major rallies tidier than when they went there.
    
    Never violent or obsessively ideological, they were shat upon from a great height by the entire political establishment, both Republican and Democrat. Remember those lying sack’s of shit from the Black Caucus who claimed to have had racial epithets thrown at them after a Tea Party rally ? Nobody else heard anything, all the recording revealed nothing…pure dog-whistle lies looking for some political advantage.
    
    Well, you lost the polite, earnest, well intentioned people as the husk of the movement was sucked dry. Then you got Trump as a deserved reaction. If polite and deliberately legal and well intentioned protest gets nowhere, why bother with any of that.

Honestly its amazing how good NZ is at rugby isn’t it! We are consistently the best in the world at this game and nobody else seems to get a look in.

My question is why is this and are the qualities which make us excel at rugby transferable across our society as a whole?

I suspect that while we moan and complain about our country and its faults, actually we are not as bad as some would have us believe. Certainly I have noticed on my overseas travels that we have a very positive image internationally.

Anyway… enough of the philosophical navel gazing. Well done last night fellas! ?

  Cheika is a an ungracious boofhead. I was at the game last night and thought the Wallabies got the rub of the green more with Owens through the whole game. Sio gets away with folding under pressure at scrum, players getting taken out/held back well past the breakdown and apparently only the All Blacks infringed offside. Australian rugby is in a dreadful state and Cheika is fully symptomatic of its plight.

    I concur SC; there’s lots of off-the-ball stuff (and the All Blacks are not lily-white in that area either), and both sides pushed the offside line to and beyond the limit. But that’s their job; to determine how far they can push the referee, and to determine what they can get away with.
    
    Big ups too to Matt Todd. He’s played his entire career in Richie McCaw’s shadow, but there was no shadow last night. Todd had a massive game, and it was easy to see why the selectors gave him the #7 jersey ahead of Ardie Savea.
    
    It will be interesting to see who gets the nod on the northern tour; Todd or Cane. Given Cane’s concussion issues this year, it must be tempting to give him the month off to have a complete break from the game and get himself right for 2017.

      As for the ungracious Cheika; conveniently forgets their fortune in the RWC quarter final against Scotland. Here’s what he said after that game;
      
      “You have to live with the ones you get and the ones you don’t. It is what it is and you just deal with it. Because of some things that have happened to me in the past, I’ve become quite neutral on the topic of referees.”
      
      It’s a shame for Australian rugby to be hamstrung with such an emotive tool in charge. They played well for periods of that game but will not progress when they are perpetually told they are the victims.

      The Aussies dominated territory and possession for a good part of the game and were competitive in the first half but sucuumbed to the dynamism of the AB’s who outscored them with the few times they got the ball.
      The Aussie forwards were a match for the AB’s which is why the AB’s struggled for possession, unfortunately for the Aussies the scoreboard did’nt reflect the effort they put in.
      In the last 20 mins both sides lost structure as the players tired, however the AB’s were the fitter side and pushed on to the end, proving their mastery of the sport.

    Not taking away anything from the AB’s great effort but Cheika in many ways sums up the dilemma of Australian Rugby that still lags behind Rules , League and Soccer as a fourth tiered code of diminishing importance . It has even in recent times lost some ground in part due to some poor decisions by the ARU e.g not keeping the small pool of local talent they desperately need from playing overseas or drifting to other codes .
    
    As Sir Graham Henry has noted this state of affairs is not good for the International game . Just look at the general lack of interest in International League with the fans there given the Kangaroos historical dominance .

        I’m in agreement there SLB but it is worth remembering the Media do not “represent” us. They are click bait driven purveyors of opinion dressed up as fact. Personally, I don’t read most of it (I don’t even listen to the commentaries on tv) because they are so lacking in knowledge about the game.
        However I think you would find that if a modern All Blacks coach carried on in such a way he’d get roasted even worse.

Go the Chicago Cubs, as they seek a place in the World Series later today. They haven’t made the World Series since 1945, and they haven’t won it since 1907!

As terrible luck would have it, I will be in Chicago at the end of next week, and if the Cubs are in the WS the place is going to be going off. I can’t imagine that there’s a chance of getting a WS ticket without selling my first-born, but I’m sure She Who Must Be Obeyed will be able to find a sports bar to watch one of the games, and that will be an experience in itself.

  I’ll be watching calmly since this is what I expect – and then chewing my fingernails off in the must-win game 7, against another good (but not great) pitcher – who also shut them down in game 3.
  
  Both teams have won two games in a row – but for the Dodger’s to win two in a row in Wrigley Field? If they can pull it off, with their weaknesses, then they really deserve to be in the WS.
  
  You could try Murphy’s, just behind Wrigley Field – but it will be little less insane than the field itself. Virtually all the North-side bars will be exploding.

      At this point it’s down to a single, bad pitch or a single swing of the bat – just like any other team, and the Dodgers have certainly suffered from both this series.
      
      Besides, as I never tire of pointing out, nobody ever wrote about “curses” of any sort for the poor old, forgotten Chicago White Sox, even as they suffered a drought longer than Boston’s. What a disgraceful All Blacks touring group named today.

Pure racist and sexist in it’s make-up.

Despite making up a significant percentage of the population not a single name suggesting Chinese or even Asian heritage and many of those sheilas you see on the sidelines around East Coast Bays, Thames, South Canterbury, Southland etc. are twice as big and tough as any of those named today.

Or maybe it’s not actually thugby at all 😉

A Financial Times investigation has connected Trump to possible money laundering schemes by Kazakh businessmen and politicians.

Public money stolen from Kazakhstan allegedly laundered through a real estate partnership involving a Trump development and the purchase of apartments there.

A Financial Times investigation has found evidence that one Trump venture has multiple ties to an alleged international money laundering network. Title deeds, bank records and correspondence show that a Kazakh family accused of laundering hundreds of millions of stolen dollars bought luxury apartments in a Manhattan tower part-owned by Mr Trump and embarked on major business ventures with one of the tycoon’s partners.

One former executive at a developer that worked with Mr Trump accused him of “wilful obliviousness” to the details of his partners’ dealings. But a spokesman for the Trump Organisation said it conducted “extensive” background checks on its partners, including hiring outside investigators.

One of those partners, Bayrock, has already been a source of controversy. Now the details of Bayrock’s association with the family of Viktor Khrapunov, a former Kazakh energy minister and ex-mayor of the city of Almaty, show it was connected to an alleged laundering scheme at the same time as it was collaborating with Mr Trump.

Lawyers for Almaty told a US court in March that Mr Khrapunov and his family “conspired to systematically loot hundreds of millions of dollars of public assets … and to launder their ill-gotten gains through a complex web of bank accounts and shell companies … particularly in the United States”

This is rather unsettling. Whatever ones feelings on the Euthanasia debate, I am getting rather concerned over a seemingly moralistic crusade type mentality from our police. If you look at the police wishing to close down the Wellington Nightlife scene by 1am closing, and now this prima facie abuse of power, it speaks to a nacent cultural shift away from their core responsibility and towards a morals based selective agenda that will be cheered by some, but should be feared by all.
