Some socialist bint whinging about moteliers hydraulicking rates to beneficiaries, who are being funded by Winz (actually overloaded taxpayers). No wonder, when we had rentals, the worst tenants were beneficiaries, they being one of the reasons we got to hell out of that market. Why is it when we see them (and regularly) being pimped in media, they are obese, unkempt, and appear to be the usual self-entitled ferals that “The Flea” is pandering to?

An interesting sidelight to the alleged fraud at the Ministry of Transport. What do our resident legal experts think about the One News story last night which named the alleged fraudster, even though the Serious Fraud Office is still investigating, and no charges have been laid? Then the CEO of the MoT effectively pronounced the woman guilty, despite the fact that investigations are ongoing. Doesn’t this prejudice the investigation?

I have no time whatsoever for anyone who rips off their employer, as I have been on the receiving end of employee fraud. But surely, the alleged offender is entitled to be presumed innocent, especially when she hasn’t even been charged with any offence yet.

Irrespective of whether we are for or against US ship visits :

I find it highly amusing that Radio NZ (morning report) we indicating that this is a “Win/Win” scenario.

ie. that NZ can feel their stance against nuclear powered visits was vindicated, and that US could feel NZ have capitulated and let their ships in.

What a load of bullshit.

NZ has not changed her stance on visits (the law is not changed), and US will neither confirm nor deny existence of nuclear weapons, nor propulsion.

The funny/stupid point made was that NZ will have to assess things once the visit is immminent – now how the bloody hell are they going to do that, given the playing field detailed above.

Status quo prevails

Last week, the Los Angeles Times reported that the California State Board of Education voted unanimously to include study of the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans in history and social-science classes. This LGBT-focused content will be taught in elementary, middle, and high-school grades. Teachers will give students, beginning in second grade, information about diverse family structures, including families with LGBT parents, to help students “locate themselves and their own families in history and learn about the lives and historical struggles of their peers,” according to the text of the framework.

Of course, there will be much re-writing and distortion of history to accomplish this stupidity.

Once the Auckland property bubble busts then the banks are insolvent. The system is to bail out the banks is to use deposit holders money to fund the shortfall. If you have a deposit with a bank will you probably get about 60 to 70c back on the dollar in a few years time.

Banks are lending like crazy safe in the knowledge that their reckless lending will be underwritten by deposit holders.

Be careful who you bank with. Last time 2 of the major housing lenders were on the brink they wont survive this time around.

Re MOT fraud – I doubt the CEO has any duty (except perhaps to his employer – the State Services Commissioner) to maintain silence. If the CEO is wrong in his assertions the aggrieved ex-employee can take action via the Employment Court or sue for defamation. Similar with TVNZ. If it came to trial, the employee’s lawyer could argue that she had been denied the right to a fair trial, which might wash if it were a jury trial.

I thought state sector employers would have been more careful after the Mary Anne Thompson affair. Seems some unsatisfactory tendencies in a prospective employee (eg excessively aggressive management style) can be regarded as a ‘positive’ instead of flashing warning lights.

@ Andrei – I stand by what I said on Tuesday; that I would normally find a reverse burden of proof abhorrent, but believe that in this case, it is justified. The Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld overnight the IAAF’s ban of Russian track and field athletes from Rio. I fully expect the IOC to now follow suit, and ban the Russian team.

I don’t share your parochial view of the McLaren Report, and doubt that it is all sweetness and light in Russia when it comes to PED’s. Drug cheats are a blight on sport, and in Russia’s case it is unfortunate if innocent athletes have been tainted by the actions of a significant number of others, and those who facilitated the doping. If those athletes can prove that they are clean, they should be allowed to complete.

‘Don’t Believe The Liberal Media!’

That message is hard to miss if you take a stroll near the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland this week.

The Media Research Center, a conservative watchdog group that has been barking at the left-leaning media for 30 years, is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for billboards and advertisements carrying that warning.

But there’s a little problem. The MRC, invaluable though it may be, is engaging in what the military calls asymmetrical warfare. Essentially, they are throwing spitballs at the battleship known as the mainstream media.

Let’s face it. Most people in the so-called ‘media elite’ don’t much care for conservatives and Republicans. To be more precise, they loathe and fear them.

It’s in their bloodstream, it’s who they are, it’s what they do.

This week, watchdogs notwithstanding, the media hounds have been unleashed in Cleveland. They reached deep into their bag of negative adjectives, finding new and innovative ways to characterize the GOP.

‘Dark,’ ‘divisive,’ and ‘humiliating’ were among the words heard frequently. One CNN analyst, displaying his obvious command of the language, described the Republican message as ‘doggie poo.’ Seriously. Over at MSNBC, Chris Matthews likened the ‘lock her up’ chant to something one might expect in Venezuela.

The media’s list of Republican villains is a long one, but here are a few of their most-despised speakers:

– Governor Chris Christie, who powerfully listed Hillary Clinton’s alleged crimes and blunders. Immediately after his speech, ABC News’ correspondent Terry Moran confronted the governor and accused him of inciting a ‘mob.’

– Patricia Smith, whose son was killed in Benghazi and who has accused Hillary Clinton of being responsible. According to the aforementioned Chris Matthews, her ‘gross accusation’ ruined the whole darned evening. Even if Ms. Smith was over the top, it’s hard to recall the media bashing the sainted Cindy Sheehan when she accused George W. Bush of murdering her son.

– Ben Carson, who invoked Lucifer during his talk. Whether joking or not, you just don’t bring up the horned netherworld dweller around secular progressives. In response, CNN devoted an entire panel to smacking the good doctor.

– John Tiegen and Mark Geist, survivors of the Benghazi attack. The Washington Post’s fact-checker actually took them to task for claiming there was an order to ‘stand down’ that night in Libya.

– And, of course, there was Melania Trump, whose aide apparently lifted a passage from Michelle Obama’s 2008 convention speech. That was wrong and embarrassing to the Trump campaign, but it was not the end of the Republic.

Our pal Bernie Goldberg points out that the media expressed more outrage over Mrs. Trump’s error than over the blatant lies told by Susan Rice after Benghazi or Hillary Clinton after her email debacle. Hey, folks, get a grip. Melania’s speech and presentation killed, but only in the figurative sense.

As we write this, Donald Trump has yet to deliver his big convention speech. But whatever he says, we’ll confidently predict that some in the media will rip it as ‘divisive,’ probably even ‘xenophobic’ and/or ‘racist.’

All this would be perfectly fine if the scales were balanced. But any thinking person knows that most reporters, correspondents, and anchors are secretly, or actively, rooting for Hillary Clinton.

Let’s watch how they cover next week’s Democratic convention in Philadelphia. Will the platform be described as ‘doggie poo?’ Will Secretary Clinton and other speakers be relentlessly fact-checked?

There will certainly be some rare sightings of honesty and fairness, but the overall message will be crystal clear: Democrats are on the side of the angels, Republicans are on the side of Lucifer. Sorry, CNN, for that devilish reference.

So Donald Trump’s challenges going forward aren’t merely winning Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida. He also has to overcome a media that despises him and his party.

They see Trump as a vulgarian who is beneath them and destructive to the ideology that is such an essential part of their identities. That, unfortunately, is the world in which we live.

Conservative media watchdogs will continue to howl, but their complaints will largely go unnoticed. They might as well be baying at the moon.”

Regardless of whether or not the US Navy visit is a good idea or not (I personally think it is a good idea) the government needs to tread carefully.

This is being viewed as flagrantly ignoring the law. If they want to invite in the US Navy then they need to run it through parliament and change the laws.

If they don’t do that it just stacks on top of other issues that feed the sentiment that there’s one rule for the powerful and another for the little people.

So you are saying that NZ is going to fall into recession and tens of thousands of people are going to lose their jobs. Because that is what would have to happen to trigger the mortgagee sales which would force the Banks to crystalize the debt.
Otherwise property goes up and it goes down. The mortgage still gets paid. Also the vast majority of NZers are conservatively geared . The isn’t a lot of 90% mortgages.
I also think you need to do a bit of Reseach on the stress tests Banks have to undergo.
Personally I think we are at the peak of the boom and prices will now flatten. Given the recent comments by some Bank execs I suspect they agree with that .

But then so is using sport to advance political agendas

In any case it is not as black and white as you make it seem when it comes to drugs in sport – using steroids to bulk up is a clear violation and dangerous to those who do it but (for example) what about the American swimmer Rick DeMont who lost his Gold Medal in the men’s 400 meter after testing positive for ephedrine which was in his Asthma medication?

But your attitude to this seems to be if an English speaking person accuses a foreigner of something it must be true and putting it to the test using the normal rules of evidence is not necessary

In the early 70’s our intermediate class was informed by our teacher that we must be nice to the new boy as he only had 1 parent.
As a child I remember thinking it was an unnecessary comment by the teacher and we could make up our own minds about the new kid.

There is no need to change the law to allow US ship visits. Although the law should be changed, as it is unnecessary, it currently provides that the PM must make an assessment as to whether a visiting vessel is nuclear armed or nuclear powered.

Nothing has changed as if you go back years and read comments on the standard, the same comments are being aired today.

Some of the more wise heads have realised that hooking up with the water melon party has been toxic to the Labour brand.

I listened to Rachel Smalley last night ( she’s filling in for Larry Williams). She was talking about the ANZ CEO’s comments with a couple of guest commentators. She was over the moon that an apparent National voter would be having a go at the Government and the guy is giving solutions which are wonderful and she agrees with ( gushing all over it –get the picture?).

So as I understand the CEO has suggested : 1. Going further than the 40%
2. Banks voluntarily introduce their own measures.
3. Bring down the exchange rate
4. Review immigration policies.

How many of these has the Government got control of ? Effectively only point 4 . But as DPF’s figures of a few weeks ago suggest , when you take out returning Kiwis , international students the number becomes quite a bit smaller. Also wasn’t it Smalley who was joining the chorus with gusto a couple of weeks ago to dramatically increase the number of refugees? Can’t have it both ways Rachel !!

In Japanese culture at least, that is the responsibility of the parents, kin and local community.

As the children reach junior high school level, the State assumes a greater role. (My older relatives (when they were still alive) remembered the State’s lies during the Pacific War, and knew first-hand about indoctrination from above).

I think that parents, kin and local community have a better idea of what each of their children need, rather than a central committee in Tokyo.

It is not a total free-for-all, however. Many things are banned: tennis balls, sleeping bags, selfie sticks and canned goods. To highlight the absurdity of the situation, the women’s peace organization Code Pink staged a demonstration at the security checkpoint to enter the RNC. In their bags, the dozen or so pink-clad women carried 500 pink and green tennis balls with the phrase “Ban Guns, Not Balls” written on them. They began tossing them to each other.

A line of Cleveland police officers quickly formed and tried to encircle the protest. They started to confiscate the tennis balls. There was confusion, as one officer asked a superior, “What do we do with the balls?” “Put them in your pocket,” came the exasperated reply. The police aggressively expanded their line, pushing observers, and us journalists, farther away. We managed to dodge them and got in close to ask Code Pink member Chelsea Byers what was going on: “We’re here saying that it’s ridiculous that the RNC has banned tennis balls, and yet they continue to let open carry happen in these streets. If they’re concerned about safety, they should be taking the guns off of these streets, not banning toys.” To reinforce the Cleveland police, a large contingent of Indiana State Police showed up, then riot police were deployed. Finally, a phalanx of police on horseback arrived. All this for about 15 women and one man from Code Pink and their 500 tennis balls.

It really doesn’t matter what is told to kids about alternate family structures, because eventually, the kids realise themselves that some structures just don’t work.

For instance, both my boys have been or are friends with boys who have been raised by two mothers. Without going into details, both have seen the unhealthy aspects of this sort of arrangement.

Yes. It’s an unfortunate fact that most women I’ve met think they understand men when in fact, most of them don’t. But of course explaining that to them is normally taken quite badly, possibly because it rubs against their maternal instinct which in many is a fundamental part of their self-esteem, just as being a good provider is a fundamental part of many men’s self-esteem.

But feminism destroys that by lying that women can be all things and anyone who doesn’t agree is monstrous. They can’t of course, anymore than men can be all things, which is why there are two of us on the planet and always has been.

It’s very evil and that’s underlined by the fact that children of these unfortunate lesbian unions form only a tiny fraction of the human destruction wrought by this evil disguised as a good.

Donald Trump’s New York Times interview reveals a dangerously lazy mind at work:

Being president of the United States is hard work, it’s important work, and Donald Trump has proven time and again he’s much too lazy to do the job. Not too lazy in the sense of sleeps in too much — he’s clearly happy to maintain a frenetic pace of activity when doing things that engage him, like tweeting or doing television or phone interviews — but too lazy in the sense of being unwilling to put in the time and repetition necessary to master new things.

That is the unescapable message of the interview he conducted with David Sanger and Maggie Haberman of the New York Times that’s published today on their website. It’s an interview that demands to be read in full, because the full context is much more horrifying than the one headline featured where Trump suggests he would unilaterally abrogate America’s NATO commitments to the Baltic countries and possibly spark a third world war.

The problem with Trump is not just the specific things he says but the casual way in which he says them and the comical “logic” that ties them together. Most of all, it’s the repetition — the fact that it keeps happening without Trump showing any capacity for growth or any interest in doing the work that would make him better at answering questions. For better or worse, Trump is now the GOP nominee, and there are hundreds of professional Republican Party politicians and operatives around the country who would gladly help him become a sharper, better-informed candidate.

It doesn’t happen because he can’t be bothered. It’s terrifying.

God help us if Trump ever becomes president of the US.

Sounds like Obama – but even worse. I still enjoy the story of how his aides kept presenting him with unemployment numbers in 2009 and 2010 that were hardly budging “despite the Stimulus”, and every time Obama would look puzzled and ask why this was not happening. FFS

At the same time my beloved is sitting beside me on this fine morning watching interviews on Trump where he’s asked about woman, marriage and kids – and she’s unloading: “Trump jest świnią” (“Trump is a pig”). Chuckle.

Yes, I did read that article you linked to. It certainly fills in quite a bit.

The most cogent explanation that I have seen on why Trump is running for president is that he did it to raise his profile, and never expected to get this far.

I agree Hillary is bad, but I disagree that Trump is least worst. He’s far more dangerous on an international level than Hillary could ever be. It’s such a pity that the US will soon have a choice between the most abysmal candidates ever.

True. It’s not a question of smarts or even ignorance.

But it is a matter of not giving a shit about being ignorant and refusing to learn that bugs me. Trump just does not care. The nuclear triad thing was the prime example for me: asked about it in late 2015, he clearly had no idea what the hell it was – but a few months later when an argument erupted about it, it was clear that he still did not know.

It’s not that complex. He just did not care to learn, and yet he’s asking people to trust him with the nuclear codes.

Perhaps it has something to do with them knowing what reaction Cruz would get and that perhaps, whilst the Trump haters in the media might lap it up,(and who cares about them , they’ll never vote for Trump anyway) it would actually backfire with the GOP members and kill Cruz’s chances for 2020. What Trump said, in an interview published by the New York Times, is that he wouldn’t necessarily defend the United States’ allies in NATO if they were attacked by a foreign power. This extended, Trump said, to the Baltic countries right on Russia’s border — countries Russia might conceivably invade.

The NATO alliance is the key deterrent against this: It is founded on a promise that an attack on one NATO country is an attack on all. Trump is directly undermining this promise.

The consequences are hard to overstate. He is trashing one of the foundations of the postwar European order, which has helped guaranteed peace on the continent for 70 years. And by equivocating on whether he would defend the Baltics, he creates a dangerous amount of uncertainty among Russians as to how seriously the US takes its NATO treaty commitments — the kind of uncertainty that, yes, could spark an actual conflict between the US and Russia.

I think Cruz is looking to keep separation between his own brand and the disaster Trump will inflict on the GOP. Post-November, they will be looking for leaders who didn’t suck up to Trump. For the same reason, Rubio and others have stayed away from the convention.

3 possibilities:

a) If Morrissey already knew that Melania Trump spoke 5 languages and he knew that we all knew that information, then he was being ironic.

b)But if he didn’t know that she spoke 5 languages then he was being…ignorant, clueless, etc.

c) If he knew, but assumed that most readers of KB didn’t know, then he was being dishonest, lying, dissimulating, etc.

I think that single interview, more than anything else, has shown how utterly unfit Trump is to hold high office. He seems to think of these security alliance, which are the foundation of peace, as ongoing contract negotiations, only to be honoured if it suits you at the moment.
It’s a carte blanche to Russia, for example, to try a bit of adventurism to see how President Trump reacts. Meanwhile, America’s allies start looking to make their own accommodations with other powers.

Lucia- that clip seems to have missed the part where Trump says that the NATO countries need to pay their share and it’s unfair that the US carries 70% of the cost and that the US will review its participation. ie, if you want our help and to count on us, start paying or do it yourself. He’s been clear on that. Just like he has said that it might be cheaper defence wise if Japan and South Korea had nuclear weapons to use as deterrents. That way the tens and tens of thousands of US troops might not be needed. And if you don’t want the bomb but still want the troops then maybe they should be paid for it.
Fair enough I reckon.
After all, look how much money Fiji makes out of the UN supplying peace keeping troops
