CO2 is a plant food and a harmless gas that helps keep us warm. At the right concentration, yes. Without the greenhouse effect the mean temperature on Earth would be -18C. Cold. Man has driven CO2 up from .028% to .04%; the mean temperature is 14C. Warm. But rising rapidly.

Venus is similar in size and distance from the Sun as Earth and has a greenhouse atmosphere. CO2 on Venus is 96% and the mean temperature is 462C. Hot. Very very hot.

Just thought you’d like to know.

The Venus comparison would be incredibly illuminating if it wasn’t for the vitally important fact that Venus is 41.4 million kms closer to the sun that Earth – which instead means the observation is facile and meaningless.

Thanks for sharing your unique but essentially distracting comment about CO2 being a fertiliser.

One could refer to this link which shows there is absolutely no correlation between levels of CO2 on the planet and temperature. But then – presenting this evidence I might be accused of skepticism by alarmists. All very childish eh?

Not sure. I think that when it gets to retail it will be a 5 or 10% blend (B5 or B10) so any energy loss would be negligible. AFAIK initial supply contracts are with industrial users for construction machinery at a bigger blend. I’m not qualified or authorised to speak for Z on this however – only involved in the pretty big construction project. Plenty of good wages being spread around, massive HS & E regime, and interesting response to the initiative by the other big 3 Oil Co’s.

Too true wiseowl, race base funding turns my stomach. $300 000 000 and even the A/G cant say where the money is going and how it is being spent. Truly disgusting. That money would go along way in the general fund..and that is where it should be. Available for all New Zealanders, not just maori. Ive had enough, on my return to NZ I shall be paying my MP a visit.

Where did I say it was the same distance? Yes Venus is closer but by the distances in the solar system similar – as I said. And the difference in distance doesn’t account for the huge difference in temperature, does it. The CO2 does. Doesn’t it.

The other day I was in The Courthouse Pub having a quiet beer by myself.

The door opened and in walked the most stunning woman I’ve ever laid eyes on. 5’11” tall, clear blue eyes, silky blonde hair, an hourglass figure barely covered by a tiny mini skirt and a flimsy cotton top.

“Ahhh….” she growled between clenched teeth, more than a bit miffed. She pulled my hand from under her top and thrust it down the front of her skirt.
My fingers immediately met what felt like a wisp of soft cotton !!!!

She whispered, ‘Well tell me this, Mr. Rugby Man: Have you ever felt such a perfect c**t?’

‘I certainly have,’ I answered, ‘I missed the kick.

I hear the green half of the MOU bridal party had their conference in Lincoln near Christchurch today. Apparently there were speeches that sounded like they were in La La land. A utopia of electric cars for family outings, catching trams to work, rivers you can swim in on the way back from work, peasants in the fields cutting wheat by hand and singing party political songs, being woken by a dawn chorus of rare birds that were almost extinct under National.

I need to lie down as all this joyous information is too much to take in.

All we need now is Greg Preslands Hallelujah chorus to burst into song.

We are at 407 ppm CO2 and see a globe 1.2C above the postindustrial temperatures.
Saying global warming is only going to be 1.4 to 1.8 for double CO2 is already proven wrong by the actual temperatures today.

I see that the movie Snowpiercer is on TV2 tonight at 9.30pm.

It’s a kind of sci-fi thing starring Chris Evans (from Captain America) in which the world’s authorities send missiles into orbit which spray gas that is supposed to control global warming. Instead, the effect is to freeze the entire planet, leaving the only survivors in a train that continually circles the frozen globe.

The spend-up has already begun. The Government gave a $5 million ~~bribe~~ grant to the 2 per cent Maori Party for commemorations to mark the Maori Wars.

Radio NZ reports 40 tribal leaders from round the country met in Manukau yesterday with Maori Development Minister Flavell.

You can bet this will be a bit of a rewrite of colonial history. I wonder whether the remarkable guerilla fighter von Tempsky and other colonial soldiers will get any recognition. ( World knife enthusiasts now collect replicas of von Tempsky Bushrangers’ version of Bowie knives).

$5 million – that’s the equivalent of 150 or so hip or knee replacements for Maori folk on waiting lists.

The end goal of Flavell’s campaign is a new national holiday. We’ve got enough holidays now, and if the goal is an occasion for indoctrination of the population, why not just rename Waitangi Day. Call it Land Wars Day.

I was the target of that rant and I can’t say I said anything particularly provocative before he launched into it. Today there was something like ‘take him out the back and shoot him’ in response to the mental case “Jihadist of sorts”

I’d otherwise found him to be quite amicable.

Depends largely on your starting point Nostra. Human aspirations are learned traits so if your mother & grandmother had nine kids each & a steady reasonable income from the state then breeding’s a tempting career option.

The only circuit breakers are the teachers & with the woeful, unionised hacks we put in front of the kids there’s little hope.

I doubt that Kiwiblog political debate produces many flip flops in individual points of view. What does happen is that the constant friction of ideas & ideology influences the way you regard future issues.

But I can honestly say that when it comes to the climate change shit (I mean, do any of the posters actually think they are going to convince anyone apart from themselves with their abuse and rants?), the Hugh Pavelitch crap (screeds of copy and paste & links that no-one would ever bother to read or click on) and the utterly deluded Penny Bright that they are just scrolled past. Apart from that I think that you are probably right.

That said – Ponyboy? Some intellectual pigmy from The Standard might howl with laughter from this being constantly repeated but it just shows that there is no honest criticism that the feeble of mind can make of John Key.

[Edit to add] There is shit loads that JK can be legitimately criticised for but Gabby and its fellow travellers cant see the woods for the trees on those matters.

I can’t think of any change-of-mind arising from reading something here, but I have certainly widened my knowledge after reading a few discussions and have been prompted to visit other sites for further information.

Many of the regular contributors to Kiwiblog discussions simply restate their positions over and over and never meet opposing views with meaningful discussion – specifically the global warming/climate changers, the Israeli/Palestinian situation, and any matters pertaining to Islam.

The result is that I do a lot of scrolling by and I suspect that most other casual readers do too.

So nutters of all ilk who rant their screeds (excepting the dogged tediuosly narcisist and the peurile gabby) have value. I know I learn a lot about all sorts of random shit.
