The report estimates that at least 1.3 million people have been killed in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan from direct and indirect consequences of the U.S. “war on terrorism.” One million people perished in Iraq alone, a shocking 5 percent of the country’s population. The staggering civilian toll and the hostility it has engendered erodes the myth that the sprawling “war on terrorism” made the U.S. safer and upheld human rights, all at an acceptable cost.

As the authors point out, the report offers a conservative estimate. The death toll could exceed 2 million. Those killed in Yemen, Somalia and elsewhere from U.S. drone strikes were not included in the tally. Besides, the body count does not account for the wounded, the grieving and the dispossessed. There are 3 million internally displaced Iraqis and nearly 2.5 million Afghan refugees living in Pakistan.

But Griff, those are war casualties, not the victims of terrorism. You know full well that there is a marked legal and moral difference between killing in war and killing by terrorism. When this distinction is properly explained to the relatives of dead Afghans and Iraqis, they pick up on it straight away. Some are even grateful that their loved ones have been killed in a clean fight rather than suffering in a terrorist massacre.

How so? It is many years since I lived there, but it seemed like a middle-of-the road city electorate. And I know there is that hotbead of liberal progressivism, Waikato Uni in Hillcrest, but they are a bit different from “common denominator”, aren’t they? More impractical left-wing rainbow intellectual than “trade union battler”? Mind you, “class warfare” is chic for both of those groups for different raesons

I wonder if the US will ever learn that it would be better if they just left the Middle East alone. They seemed to be able, eventually, to learn that lesson with respect to Central America and the Caribbean. Granted, that took over a hundred years, whereas there have only been US boots on the ground in the Middle East for thirty years or so, but we could hope the rate of learning is improving.

Nobody is proposing that that is what we want in New Zealand. That is not what will result from a policy of continuing to apply our immigration rules and our laws to Muslims on exactly the same basis as they apply to everybody else.

The reactions to the Brexit vote seem a bit over the top. I don’t really think it is the watershed it has been painted as . It does have strange aspects, especially the working class voters in the North East handing a victory to the Tory right. It also indicates Corbyn was the wrong leader for Labour as his very left views clashed with the conservative concerns of labour voters on jobs and immigration.
On a practical level it will be very difficult for Britain for a few years as they realign their economy. A bit like it was for us when Britain went into the common market all those years ago. In the end that was the best thing that could have happened to us and may turn out the same way for the UK. Not easy at the time though and this wont be easy for the Brits . They already have problems with debt and current account deficit and they will now have a recession as investment decisions will be put on hold until the relationship with Europe is clarified. The Europeans wont make it easy as they will want to show other member states there is no easy out. They will take some short term pain themselves to make their point, much as they have with Greece over debt.

The political situation in Westminster wont resolve easily either with Labour in a complete mess and the Tory leavers forced to fess up that they have no idea how to implement what they campaigned for. Certainly wont be more money for the NHS. Maybe Cameron will get his job back in a year or two.

It is a big deal but probably not a 3 Trillion dollar deal. Maybe some effect on world growth short term but not much in the grand scheme of things. Cant see it having much affect on the US election, especially if Trump has been saying what a good thing Brexit is and UK unemployment spikes ( which seems likely ).

There are two problems with that theory mikey. First, Islam has been in an almost constant state of war against the West for over a thousand years. Despite the apparent delusion of some Liberal-Leftists, the US has not been around for that long. And two, the current modern wave of Islamic terror was a result of the formation of a free and independent Jewish state, and the Russian communist invasion of Afghanistan. So, Jew hatred and the actions of a Lefty totalitarian regime.

The “it’s always the US’s fault” line is dear to Leftists no matter what the issue, but it has little to do with the reality of Islam.

Some people can walk and chew gum at the same time. People in employment have contracts that outline what they are supposed to do. In my experience, if one does not deliver; one is moved on.

Every election is divisive, but none has pitted rich against poor like this one. The social divide has been far more dramatic than the divide between the two main political parties. In general elections, the professional and managerial classes favour the Tories by a margin of four to three. The difference is nothing like as marked as the social divide in the referendum vote. As a generalisation, the split has been between the educated ‘haves’ on one side and the working class on the other. The Remainers found ways of making this point — casting themselves as cosmopolitan and ‘open’ against the crude and (presumably) closed-minded Leavers.

The divide shows how changes brought about by globalisation and large-scale immigration have affected different classes in contrasting ways. For the ‘haves’, it has been a boon. The Notting Hill crowd now has cheap, highly qualified Polish builders, well-educated Polish cleaners and perhaps a Romanian nanny for their children. They go to Caffè Nero and are served by polite Italians. They feel deliciously international and open-minded while enjoying cheaper, better services than they otherwise would. When they arrive at Pisa airport for their holiday in Tuscany, they join the EU queue for passport control and feel part of a cosmopolitan club.

There have been nine Breitbart stories linked to today. Maybe all by you, I’m not sure. I think Fletch likes linking to them as well.

I don’t read Breitbart, personally. I find them far too inflammatory and one-sided. Their news is heavily flavoured with opinions, where certain things are stressed and others are ignored. They seem to have some sort of Trump can do no wrong love affair with the man, which means that when I do look at them (normally to just get a sense if they are still out there on the deep end, kind of what I do with EAD’s favourite website, Veteran’s Today), there’s always something pro-Trump, defending Trump, reporting on Trump. In other words, they are very biased, and that’s ok, but there’s only so much of them that I can take, so I don’t go there as a general rule. I think anyone that does enjoy reading them will go there to read their stories.

Also, I don’t think Breitbart is on par with regular news organisations, no matter how biased they are, as those news organisations do try to be not biased, as impossible that can be at times. So, the news is more matter of fact, more broad, and far more likely to give a wider range of opinions, when opinions are included in the news pieces.

Anyway, nine links to Breitbart stories – you might as well just say every time, go read Breitbart. It’s like you are replicating it here for all the non-Breitbart readers, who don’t read it because they don’t want to.

I have to disagree with that, in that there are many, many stories that I’ve read in the general media (I’m anything except for Breitbart is liberal?) that try to give both sides of the argument, even if doing so is giving the other side a credibility it doesn’t deserve.

Also, the downside of getting all your news from one source is that it shrinks your world view, in that anything else that does happen that is not considered important to that site just basically ceases to exist.

I agree with that, and I do in fact read very widely, across the political spectrum, I always have done. Breitbart is a conveniant source for good headlines that annoy the Liberal-Leftists here, and annoying them is something I consider to be a patriotic duty.

But I do post regularly from about ten or so sites. The last few days I have been posting more than usual because I’m off work with a bloody cold.

Anyway, I’m cooking dinner for my wife, so I need to get cracking. Have a good night Lucia.

Its clear that the barbarians are at the gates of Europe, and even within western countries. The EU wants to admit Turkey and have a land border with Iran, Iraq and Syria.

War is coming, and it will most likely fall to America, Britain and Russia to save the world again. Ignoring the obvious point that fighting the Nazis was a net detriment, none bar stephieboy and the (((elites))) can have little doubt that repelling the Muslims from European lands is for the good

I used to post on a mothering forum years, and years ago. Back when my oldest, who is 19, was a baby. And multiple brackets always meant hugs. The more brackets, the more hugs. That terminology will henceforth always look like hugs to me.

Russia helped start the last world war and then tried to forget that and only remember when they swapped sides and had to fight for their survival against their old ally. I can kind of see that happening again, actually.
