No, the rebuild is still significant, but waning, and construction and immigration are not long term economic strategies. In fact, given the immigration levels, construction is still a long way from meeting demand.

And immigration world wide is almost entirely about people leaving poorer countries to go to richer ones, and we are not in any way the most popular destination.

What does give us cause to celebrate is that this government, through the its misplaced budget parsimony, has proven we have a resilient economy, but there is no joy in seeing resilience as an economic strategy. That’s just Presbyterianism taken too far.

Over the March 2016 year, RGNDI per capita increased 0.3 percent compared with the December 2015 year. This shows that New Zealand’s real purchasing power increased more than New Zealand’s population.

Wouldn’t be quite the same if they had their own currency. Their industry benefits from a EUR exchange rate that’s artificially low while Greece, Spain, Italy etc suck up the pain of it being too high for them.

If the EU really was a country, Germany would be actually paying money to those regions, rather than smugly forcing them into austerity to repay “loans”.

A family argument over whether the Earth is flat or round became so heated that one of the participants threw a propane cylinder onto a campfire, prompting an intervention by firefighters. The dispute over a question most considered resolved centuries ago boiled over around 10:30 p.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Park in Brockville, Ont. Police said a 56-year-old Brockville man was at a campsite with his son and his son’s girlfriend when the woman began insisting that the Earth is flat. The older man insisted the Earth is round. It’s not clear if anyone at the campfire put forth the argument that the Earth’s equatorial bulge makes it not perfectly round, but instead a shape known as an oblate spheroid. Nevertheless, police said the man became so enraged he began throwing objects into the campfire, including a propane cylinder. Brockville firefighters were called to put out the campfire. By the time police arrived at the scene, the man had left. Brockville police are looking for the man and say they expect to charge him with mischief.

To make matters even more dire the National party leader and prime minister Mr John Key wants to bring in even more lifestyle nomads from Syria. It is a huge risk that many will harbor ISIS sympathies against NZ citizens in the future.

Why shouldn’t Ministers attend FieldDays mikenmild? It is one of the biggest agricultural gatherings in the world, and like it or not, the primary production sector is still hugely important to our economy. There’s plenty of overseas interest as well, including a delegation from the Chilean government attending. Paula Bennett was there today in her ministerial capacity to discuss Climate Change issues.

And look; they’re merely following the example of their predecessors, although I suspect National Minister get a far better reception at Mystery Creek than Helen Clark ever did…

National Agricultural Fieldays, Mystery Creek

Thank you for inviting me once again to open the 2005 National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek. We celebrate the Fieldays as a major event on the rural calendar, and they attract the interest of big numbers of urban people too.

The Queen opened the very first Fieldays, at Te Rapa in 1968. Her presence helped attract a large attendance – sufficient to ensure that the event would be an annual success. That first year, the Fieldays raised enough money to put a deposit on Mystery Creek.

Sadly this will be the first Fieldays not attended by one of its founders, Sir Don Llewellyn, who passed away this year at age 84. Sir Don was also the founding Vice-Chancellor of Waikato University. He made an outstanding contribution to education, to agriculture, and to the Waikato – his adopted home. The Fieldays grew from Sir Don’s push for more contact between the university, the community, and the neighbouring agricultural research institute at Ruakura.

The National Agricultural Fieldays is now the largest show of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, with over 1000 exhibitors spread over 100 hectares, and attracting over 130,000 people. Sales during the four days of last year’s Fieldays totalled $131 million. The fieldays are a significant economic event in their own right, and give a high profile to the Waikato.

The focus of this year’s Fieldays is ‘People on the Farms – Managing Your Workplace’. The aim is to provide farmers with more information about best practice in employing labour, in promoting health and safety, and upskilling.

This fits well with our government’s work with industry to boost labour productivity, skills training, health and safety at work, and work-life balance. The agricultural industries are playing their part in tackling these issues.

Paula is Minister for Climate Change Issues, Minister for Social Housing, and Minister of State Services.
Climate change is very much an issue for the ag sector.

New Zealand’s economic growth is barely keeping up with the speed at which the population is growing, amid a slowdown in the primary sector.

Official figures released on Thursday showed gross domestic product rose by 0.7 per cent in the first three months of the year, bringing annual growth to 2.8 per cent.

But while the construction industry is expanding at speed, economists said almost all of the growth was being driven by population growth, currently at a 40 year high, boosted by record immigration.

And most of you, despite all the evidence you daily decry about how the media is a bunch of biased superficial brain-dead morons, still, to this day, await the media to reveal what your profound ignorance judges to be “the truth” and until it does, despite your daily decries, most of you won’t accept this is precisely exactly indubitably in fact what Key did.

I feel sorry for you because when you die, you’ll see precisely how the world works, what’s been happening on your watch, and you’ll then, but only then, realise you’ve lived your entire life in profound and utter ignorance, that everything you thought was true was in fact false.

I also hold you in contempt, because the truth is out there, a mere click away, but most of you won’t ever even bother dancing around it, let alone plunging in, no holds-barred. You are wrong, and I mean no offence in informing you of this.

Here’s the thing for your theory: immigration has operated within a bipartisan consensus since before the Clark government. But if anyone opened the gates, it was the Clark government; Key’s lot just went with the flow (pun intended).

The biggest negative of our economic growth figures the almost non-existent per capita income growth: 0.3% over the last twelve months, according to NZStats.

Now, English makes great play of how we are doing better than our peer countries, the OECD group of advanced economies.

First, we are already one of the poorest nations in that group, and heading lower all the time under this government. English conveniently omits this telling fact.

Second, those OECD countries with tiny growth are almost exclusively ruled by conservative governments that see austerity as a virtue, demonstrating a sound lack of understanding of Keyne’s Paradox of Thrift. If those same countries had, when their central banks lowered interest rates to almost their lower limit, had soaked up the excess savings of segments of their own economies and the emerging markets, economic growth could have bubbled along quite nicely on money borrowed at almost zero real interest rates.

In other words, low growth is these days almost entirely a government construct: it is a feature, not a bug, of government policy.

The dairy boom and the rebuild obscured the truth of the matter: our class riven government does not want high economic growth. It suits them just fine to keep us poorer rather than richer, even though we can double our debt/GDP level without compromising fiscal responsibility or our credit rating.

What most advanced economies need is a dose of injected cash to kick their economies into gear until sufficient economic opportunities pop up to enable the government to once more take a back step.

Remember, a government of a country with a sovereign currency can always service its debt obligations.

Of course Clark did it too, but in her term there was no cheap Chinese money available.

I cite as evidence for my analysis the fact during Clark’s term Akld’s face didn’t change, during Key’s term it did.

The biggest issue when you walk round Akld and notice the new faces is: none of them look particularly well educated, particularly salubrious, particularly valuable for a small country like ours. Most of them walk round with prams, new citizens, taking advantage of systems we built, they didn’t.

It appears Key just took anything with ability to source funds from the Bank of China.

That’s the shame of him, when we had the entire Chinese population to choose from, why did he choose the dregs, on our behalf, without asking us?

Remember, a government of a country with a sovereign currency can always service its debt obligations.

They need a real not fiat as you clearly know blaze.

I saw a great chart the other day I posted here, sorry can’t find it, showing the budget deficit in the US before and after leaving the gold std.

The faces of Auckland changed drastically under Clark. I lived in Mt Albert for her entire reign and that Main Street changed dramatically.

But look, you are basing your argument against immigration on racism. My concern is that the immigrants are not contributing to economic growth other than their being here, and we have to share a shrinking pool (currently) of export earnings with them.

If you are an advocate for hard money, then you are crazy. Look, the US government deficit has been a boon to both that country – it can always print the money for its debt – and the rest of the world. Those deficits supported our surpluses!

How do explain that in the modern economy, US debt is cheaper than ever while its level of debt is higher than ever? Germany is now charging for the privilege of you lending its government your money [edit: 10 yr bonds].

Why would you want permanently reduced incomes to stay fixed to gold? Instead of the joy of savings being redistributed globally to those who need them, without having to dig big holes in the ground?

Add the increasing burden of infrastructure that we need to fund to support the growing population and we are actually going backwards . The effect of the migrants not only reduce the share of the export earnings each citizen benefits from it also suppresses the wages of existing population so we who are already here are losing out.
I believe the main motivation for those in power is to keep the entitlements of the boomer generation going for as long as possible at a cost to the younger generations future prospect and life style .

National govt.’s have always used immigration to ramp up the GDP.
They have no idea how to do anything else. Tourism is just another short from of immigration.

One of the driving forces of our low productivity and falling level of GDP per capita is the Reserve bank Act.

That targets something we have no control over and something which is a symptom of our malaise rather than a cause.

What the Act should be about is using monetary policy to increase the wealth of NZer’s.

Change the ACT and you change the entire behavoir of our system.

Its actually really simple, as most things are.

Yes it would seem so. USA Obama raised national debt from 11 trillion to 20 trillion. [ Not sure if thats gross or net debt ]
but around $US60,000 per individual, or say $250,000 per family of four.
They say a lot of this debt is internal, however that helps.
We seem in the West to live in a make believe world .
As far as I know NZ is borrowing money as though it were going out of fashion, as Reid suggests it is. $NZ 60 billion debt. Thats maybe $16,000 per individual.

Well, well, surprise, surprise.

Didn’t take the new Muslim Mayor of London long to start the censorship going.

Starting next month, Transport for London will not allow ads that cause pressure to conform to “unrealistic or unhealthy body shape,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan said in a statement.

“As the father of two teenage girls, I am extremely concerned about this kind of advertising which can demean people, particularly women, and make them ashamed of their bodies,” Khan said. “It is high time it came to an end.”
