Comparing Republican “Christian Values” To Islamic Fundamentalism

“It’s always amusing to me when I hear right-wing Christians speaking out so angrily against Islam. When you separate Islamic radicals (aka terrorists), and just focus on the two religions themselves, they’re not all that different. In fact, on many issues they wholeheartedly agree. Again, I’m not talking about groups like ISIS or any other terrorist organization, I’m focusing on basic, non-militant Islamic fundamentalists who believe in Sharia law and that religion should rule over government, such as those in Saudi Arabia.

Take women’s rights for example. Granted, women here in the United States are given far more freedoms than women in many nations ruled by Islam, but that freedom has come from secularists – not Christian fundamentalists. If it were up to many of these fundamentalists, women would have far fewer rights than they currently have. Even in 2015, I still meet hardcore evangelicals here in Texas quite often who think women should wear long skirts and hide as much skin as possible. But when you get beyond basic rights for women, both right-wing Christians and Islamic fundamentalists oppose abortion, sex education and contraceptives.

Then there’s always homosexuality and gay rights, a subject both sides vehemently oppose. Homosexuality is extremely frowned upon (if not outright illegal) in many Islamic nations. Meanwhile, here in the U.S., Republicans continue to do just about everything they can to deny homosexuals equal rights and legalize discrimination against them. Again, millions of homosexuals are moving closer and closer to equal rights because of secularists, not because of Christian fundamentalism. I fully believe that if it were up to many right-wing evangelicals in this country, and we had no Constitution to prevent them from doing it, many wouldn’t have a problem with making homosexuality illegal….”

Over 30% of the Muslims in UK want Sharia Law. ie. stonings etc. so we’re not just talking about a few fundamentalist nut jobs.

I think you’ll find that the population of Christians that want to do such things is maybe a few less than that.

Meanwhile, here in the Western world, we don’t execute people for being homosexuals. We don’t gang rape and stone women to death for being ‘impure’. I’m sorry, but the plights of women and homosexuals in our way of life are a dream come true for some people. To equate them must, surely, be a joke.

And women and homosexuals achieved a hell of a lot before secularism became ‘mainstream’, even in the US.

Here let me help.
In Britain, conservative ideas (though not yet called that) emerged in the Tory movement during the Restoration period (1660–1688). Toryism supported a hierarchical society with a monarch who ruled by divine right. Tories opposed the idea that sovereignty derived from the people, and rejected the authority of parliament and freedom of religion.

If you do ever get around to reading and thinking about the actual teachings of Christ you will find he was a lot more like a liberal progressive than a conservative.

Actually – now that I think about it – clearly the HRC is biased towards the Government and the far right. After all – they actually have the word “Right” in their name! How much more blatant can you be!

It’s so funny how the loons on the left label anyone who they don’t like or disagree with as a fascist or a nazi – all the while espousing all of the key characteristics of the fascists and nazis of the 30s and 40s:
– support and sympathy for the evils of Islam
– restrictions on freedom of expression

Yeah, my sister often posts her garbage.

Last time I talked to her she fired a shot across my bow (even though I never bring up Christianity with her) then informs me that her son has been praying to Allah with the new Muslim boyfriend of her best friend.

Told me that if anyone has a problem with it then they will feel her wrath.

This dude knocked up her best friend out of wedlock and seems to be quite sympathetic to ISIS, but if I dare mention Jesus I had better look out!!!

There are two types of tolerance:
1. The type when you exercise patience when – for example – someone is learning to drive – they will get better.
2. The other type is when one lowers your standards or expectations – eg: Oh well – if people cant spell properly then we will probably have to go along with it.

Now as for likes and dislikes and prejudice – well I am entitled to the ones that I have.

As for rights – actually there are very few deliverable ‘rights’. We hear people wailing about the ‘Right’ to a house or a job or all sorts of things. The question to ask when these claims are made is “And who is responsible for delivering or supplying these demands” – and of course the usual answer is “the government” – ie: us, me, you etc. Well guess what – I dont have a duty to supply anyone with a job or a house or respect or tolerance, etc, etc. I have no duty to respect transgender people or to not discriminate against them (on a personal level).

I think there is a lot of stupid stuff spoken about rights and tolerance.

If you do ever get around to reading and thinking about the actual teachings of Christ you will find he was a lot more like a liberal progressive than a conservative.

Jesus also used the qualifier “go and sin no more”.

The modern liberal is trying to usurp the role of Christianity in society, that is why they view Christians as the enemy.

But as liberals gain more control, they reveal themselves to be far more intolerant and far more opposed to genuine freedom of speech than even the worst aspects of institutional Christianity.

The human rights inquisition is growing stronger by they day and developing real teeth, forcing compliance on society without mercy.

And of course, that’s stipulating your argument in the first place, which, being familiar with Christian history, I’m not inclined to accept, even though I’m also a secularist, like a few others who’ve posted here.

It appears the reason the left are being tarred with this tolerance of gay bashing and misogyny if is carried out by Muslims is a consequence of their opposition to the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan along with being critical of the regular slaughter of Palestinians carried out by the IDF and fanatical settlers.
Apparently, the US and their flunkies invaded Iraq and Afghanistan to liberate women and homosexuals; weird thing is, this is exactly the same reason Israelis have to slaughter so many Palestinians.

I don’t think you get the point. It’s not about whether conservative muslims and christians have similar if not the same attitude towards women and gays.

The point is that large parts of the left will passionately criticise any conservative or christian attitudes towards gays or women or any other topic but shy away from even the slightest criticism of muslims.

Be a conservative christian and against gay marriage: you are a christian bigot.
Throw gays of a rooftop: Nothing to do with Islam.

Insofar the title is wrong, it should be called the “regressive left”.

The point is that lefties are reluctant to criticise Islam and it’s doctrines and that some muslims behave the way they behave precisely because of those doctrines. They will happily betray their own ideals, rather than to even give the slightest appeareance that they may be rascist.

When Chrsitians are motivated by their faith or the holy books, the left have no problem pointing that out that lot of the bigotry is justified or rooted by religious beliefs and their holy books. And rightfully so.

When Muslims do far, far worse things than any Christian fundementalist would do the left bend over backwards not to criticise Islam and come up with all sorts of excuses. And they do so even when those Muslims tell us, abundantly clear and ad nauseum, their motivations and why they do the things they do.

And very sadly, and ironically, only the right remains to criticise Islam.

The rise of the far right in Europe and elsewhere is to some degree a responsibility of the lefts fairlure to address these issues.

Christianity has been a religion of continual reform and progression, that there were a few problems along the way does not make it rational or logical to ignore the context of history or the various dual agendas at play that often corrupted the gospel.

We (and most of the western world at least) don’t have a problem with the teachings of our prophet, all our problems have been related to NOT following them consistently.

Your view of history on this matter is not accurate or rational, it reveals a prejudicial view that in my opinion puts your form of atheism firmly in the conspiracy theorist camp.

When the Soviet Union collapsed the Western establishments shit themselves, all of a sudden there was no ‘imminent threat’ providing a pretext to spend up large on military arsenals; no pretext to justify authoritarian style intelligence networks; no rationale to fund foreign terror regimes in the global battle against communism. Without the ‘evil empire’ there was no official enemy. So guess what Western establishments set about doing, they’ve embarked on a path of creating a whole new raft of ‘official enemies’.

And those ‘lucky’ Muslims got promoted to the top of the shit list; and you want me to join in this far-right agenda of screaming at some stereotype promoted by the most sophisticated propaganda machine the planet has ever witnessed.
Sure, there are plenty of Muslims who are disgusting homophobes, misogynists and all out socio-paths; the Western propaganda system loves these Muslims so much, and promotes them so fervently, we have become accustomed to the words Muslim and Islam being synonymous with concepts like terrorism, repression of women and the persecution of homosexuals.

This cartoon has nothing to do with criticising the Left’s reluctance to condemn the homophobic and misogynistic tendencies within Islam, it is about justifying the right of Western warmongers to demonize a marginal group so when they are slaughtered en masse we needn’t trouble our consciences with their blood; THEY HAD IT COMING!

No thanks, eszett. You join in this far-right hate fest, if that’s what makes you feel better. Just don’t expect much in the way of support from people like me. The growth of the far-right in Europe and the US is as a direct consequence of the kind of bigoted propaganda we have been subjected to for the last couple of decades; it has got nothing to do with the ‘Left’s’ unwillingness to participate in the progrom.

Eighty years ago in Germany you pricks were using the same tactics to go after Jews. Replacing Jews with Muslims doesn’t make it morally acceptable. It’s as reprehensible now as it was then.

The gays thrown of rooftops were muslims. The women who are opressed are muslims. The men, women and children ripped apaprt by suicide bombers are muslims.

No one suffers more under Islamist more than muslims. The number of muslims killed and maimed by other muslims greatly outnumbers anything undertaken by western forces by a country mile.

The cartoon has nothing to do about right wing war mongerers other than in your imagination. It has everything to do with the regressive left enabling the Islamist warmongerers and their sympathisers.

The only time these people become ‘worthy victims’ is when their deaths are at the hands of official enemies, if they’re being incinerated by US drones in Pakistan, massacred in Yemen by Saudi air strikes, rotting in Egyptian torture chambers or the subjects of Israeli terror they are largely ignored.

The horrors inflicted on women and homosexuals by Islamic extremists is disgusting, but don’t kid yourself about the right-wing crocodile tears or the crazy narrative about the left’s acceptance of Islamic violence.
I read a great many left-wing commentators and I don’t recall any of them making excuses for this kind of Islamic extremism. What you do get is commentators on the left pointing to Western terror creating the conditions which have led to a massive increase in acts of Islamic extremism, but this is a million miles from condoning that level of religious intolerance.

The left’s losing? Name one genuinely capitalist country in the world. The most succesful countries all had capitalism extensively modified and muzzeled by socialist activism over the last 150 years, and in general the more they were modified by socialism the more successful they are (in terms of well-being of the people who live there). An actual capitalist country would be such a nightmare no-one’s been game to create one.

The point is that lefties are reluctant to criticise Islam and it’s doctrines and that some muslims behave the way they behave precisely because of those doctrines. They will happily betray their own ideals, rather than to even give the slightest appeareance that they may be rascist.

Well, some of them. I’ve had plenty of arguments over at the Standard with such apologists, often people who don’t hesitate to hold Christianity to account for the consequences of its ideology. But there are others who get the point.

Well said, PM. This thread has been a bit puzzling, as some people seem to think that the cartoon has highlighted some universal truth. Yes, some people might give Muslims a free pass to be sexist or homophobic. But this is probably just as rare as those fundies who think it is okay to discriminate against gays because of their own ‘religious’ freedom.
Fanatics and bigots come in all shapes and sizes, and use every variety of ideology to justify their nastiness.

It’s sad how some people’s ideas of tolerance lead them to be so tolerant that they tolerate the intolerable, and wear that as a badge of pride and honour. “Look at me!” they cry as they hold hands with those who oppress in the name of their cause, and when they are called out about it, they take on the mantle of the oppressed they claim to support.

Admittedly, they are few in number, but vocal in their presence. The self raising status they derive from their actions is increased as a result of the social media backlash they inevitably generate against themselves, and the cycle begins again.

It would appear that the elites embrace of the Muslim immgrant is seen as an abandonment of the indigenous working class.
