You only get one shot at life so make the most of it while you got it.
Buy the biggest car, fly everywhere you want and buy what you want.
Leave all the worrying to other people who have nothing better to do.
Besides even if the sea levels rise only some fetid third world atolls will be swamped and frankly this will probably be a blessing in disguise so it’s a win win.

Except that you are the one that looks stupid. Physics taking it’s course is you being banned for longer and longer periods because you abuse people that disagree with you. I don’t know how, but you managed to avoid a 2-week suspension recently, so the next one will be more of a shock. That’s the physical consequence of making fun of stupidity that will affect you.

In the scheme of things the impact of this blog is meaningless. Out in the big wide world things are changing with climate change being taken more seriously by even our government.

Well, you may not have noticed, but what government takes seriously is normally not a good indication of what is important. But when there are votes involved, sure they’re right there taking the voting catching stuff seriously to make sure those votes are theirs.

I ask… because I know what its like for young folks looking for jobs with a BA or similar….

Yes, I am well aware of what interests and holds kids’ interest at schools.

I’d love to see all secondary schools with really good engineering workshops (mechanical and electrical)/ really well-equipped science labs/ really good hospitality-style kitchens/ a well-equipped horticultural unit.

A new University of Miami (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science-led study found that Miami Beach flood events have significantly increased over the last decade due to an acceleration of sea-level rise in South Florida. The researchers suggest that regional sea-level projections should be used in place of global projections to better prepare for future flood hazards in the region.

“Our results show that the effect of sea-level rise is real and affecting the daily life of people living in low-lying coastal communities, such as Miami Beach,” said Shimon Wdowinski, UM Rosenstiel School research professor of marine geosciences, and lead author of the study.

The results showed that the flooding frequency in Miami Beach has significantly increased after 2006 mainly due to increasing number of high-tide flooding events. The increased flooding frequency coincides with acceleration in the rate of sea level rise in South Florida. The average rate of sea-level rise increased by 6 millimeters per year over the last decade — from 3 millimeters per year before 2006 to 9 millimeters per year after 2006.

The study also provides new evidence that connects the weakening of the Gulf Stream with sea-level rise along the US Atlantic coast.

Florida is one of the most vulnerable areas to sea-level rise due to its low elevation, large population concentrations, and economic importance. Accelerated rates of sea-level rise have caused a significant increase in flooding frequency in several coastal communities in Florida.

I still haven’t worked that one out.
I think it may have been triggered by people hitting report abusive comment when I pointed out its greed that stops most taking heed of the warnings of science .

I see Seven Sharp talking about conservation funding. One of the interviewees said funding was being cut.

I thought I would have a look at that. Vote Conservation has gone from $200 million in 1998/99 to $450 million in 2015/16. So an increase.

Over the same period, Defence has gone from $1.6 billion to $3.2 billion; Corrections from $400 million to $1.5 billion; Spying from $19 million to $87 million; Health from $6.2 billion to $15 billion.

So we seem to be skimping on conservation and defence and prioritising jails, spies and hospitals.

I’ll word it differently then…. Do you know many folks in their late teens/early 20s who are seeking employment?
I’ve had my kids, their friends and all the boys I taught to observe.
Admittedly, not all have stayed in NZ… but the ones who have come through an apprenticeship don’t seem to ever lack for work.
I can’t tell you how many I’ve met with a basic arts or a creative arts qualification that are struggling to get a decent job in the field they’ve majored in.

I will confess that I studied for an arts degree before joining the workforce. My educational choices were never motivated by career prospects. I had friends who were directed into specific professions by parents – that worked for some, not for others.
I still think young people should be encouraged to explore what matters to them, rather than worry about future affluence.

Except that at 18 those school leavers are not exactly callow youths or at least shouldn’t be. Get a trade or a useful qualification then do your BA in interpretive dance after you’ve made your bundle.

The alternative is a useless, feel good degree, ratshit employment prospects & a student loan that will be a millstone round your neck.

That would be lovely… and I am afraid to say tells me that you must have had a wee safety net to fall back on, if the jobs weren’t there when you graduated.

If you intend sprogging out kids at a young age, then it pays to have some handy skills that folks are willing to pay for…… you’ll have the rest of your life to follow up esoteric interests.

I think we robbed a generation of kids of opportunities to acquire a decent trade when we buggered around with apprenticeships and trade subjects in schools.
Hoardes of kids just want to get out of the school system and do real, practical stuff.

I can understand that attitude: “You can always dance/make movies/paint/write on the weekends.”
I’m not knocking trades, at all. Kids should be encouraged to try things and pursue what motivates them. If you find kids that react to the information that more plumbers become millionaires than any other occupation, tell them to go for it. If they are allergic to faeces under the fingernails, perhaps they should consider other options.
It takes all kinds. We don’t need to tell kids that only some pursuits are worthwhile. Would we tell a kid to give up rugby because only 1 in a thousand players get to play professionally?

Truth rarely appears here, and when it does, it’s almost always stamped on. In fact since 2003 I can’t recall a time it wasn’t, when it didn’t suit the narrow dimensions most people here calculate their politics on.

Is it going to happen?
Who knows I dont have the facility’s at the moment to do the work needed so it is just an idea as yet.
The cost is affordable, XJS jags are a true classic GT and besting hot Holden’s in old pommy iron would be a giggle.

No, but most kids would realise that being a film star or sports professional is okay to dream about but something else is needed to pay the bills just in case it doesn’t work out.

Having a trade or real qualification you can fall back on is a handy backstop.

It is basically engine mounts .
If you go carb no issues with wiring you just need adapters for the jag fittings for the gauges to work.
The hardest part it getting a decent diff ratio 2:88 is way to low for a decent engine to run top gear at legal speeds .
The diff is a dana 44 like jeeps use but the bolts holding the ring gear are different so you need sleeves made up to change it out to a decent ratio.

Now if you knew our Mabel, You’d see just why I spluttered,

I’d spent two months in traction For the last complaint I’d uttered.

She stood there nude and naked Bent forward just a bit

I went to hold her, sensual like and stood on her left tit!

Mabel screamed, her teeth shot out; My God what had I done!?

She moaned and groaned then shouted out: Step on the other one!!

Well readers, I can tell no more; Of what occurred that day.

Your main trouble would be that the Yank V8 would outlast the rest of the XJ6 by about twenty years. I agree that the Jags looked the part but mechanically they were typically poorly designed, poorly engineered Pommie crap.

Put a Toyota engine in a Skoda…..at least you’ll save a bit on garage space. 🙂

Griff, I might be a dummy here but what is a Chev 383 Stroker? Is it a 327 or 350 stroked out to 383, or is it a Chrysler engine which was 383 in the first place? Or is it a Chevy 283?

basically a chev 350 with a chev 400 stroke.
You can buy the parts including new crank, rods, pistons for 900us .
If you use a vortex truck motor they already come stock with a roller cam ,good heads and 4 bolt mains.
420+hp is very easy to get without going hard out .
The V12 is about 250hp when it runs and weighs around 200kg more .

It’s also not so much the engine wiring, it’s the wiring throughout the whole car. They used really cheap stuff and the connections in the switch gear are rubbish too. They weren’t put together very well either.You may end up having to replace quite a few of the wiring looms…
Still the shape really does look good today and it’s aged well.

Joseph Lucas prince of darkness.
I can do wiring.
Mostly according to what I have read its issues with connectors and earthing.
Nothing a few hours with a ohm meter and a set of good crimping plies can not fix.
Plus if you drop in led’s it resolves a lot of issues when you amperage only needs to be 1/10 of what it was and the actual voltage is immaterial.

Maggy: I’d love to see all secondary schools with really good engineering workshops (mechanical and electrical)/ really well-equipped science labs/ really good hospitality-style kitchens/ a well-equipped horticultural unit.

Fat chance of that happening under the modern regime of the safety elves. Machine tools and electricity are dangerous, they require common sense, discipline and personal responsibility to use without danger to oneself or others, attributes that we are doing our damnedest to exclude from child rearing and education in NZ. Only the ‘haves’ (have an adult friend or relative with skills and a workshop) gain those sorts of skills in childhood now.

A great first step for technical education in NZ would be to follow the UK with its distribution of free, very basic microcomputers to a million schools to help kids with the potential and will, learn to code.

Contrast this with foisting tablets and basic laptops on families that are struggling to feed and clothe their kids. These devices are bugger all use, except making kids at ease with internet access and email. The old “manual” courses in schools of half a century ago were too heavily focused on wood. Metal work, electrical work, use of now cheap machine tools, clothing design and assembly, very basic CNC tools. This sort of stuff could turn schools into intriguing places for many kids.

I dont expect to use such a thing as daily driver just like I dont plow fields with my tractors now.
They just give me a hobby. Learn about new stuff extend my self and get a sense of achievement at acomplishing something interesting .

Today’s utter stupidity . . .

(1) Some stu-u-u-u-u-u-pid bitch in the US takes video of herself laughing in a wookie mask. And ? Aah – it’s gone viral. It has ? What on earth is that shit ? It’s nothing. It’s some total moron laughing like a moron at something that’s really not that funny. That’s what morons do. Easily amused by nothing. She’s fat as well – there’s nothing like a really fat moronic American laughing at sweet fuck all, eh ? She got 15 mins of fame for **that** ?? You are shitting me. A world gone mad.

(2) KB training – alarm bells as TV1’s Corin Dann spews the well-worn go to phrase for his KFC swilling viewers – ‘not a good look for the govt’. *whoop whoop whoop*. Thanks for telling me what to think mate. He’s not a good look for the standard of journalism in NZ. And yet – they keep getting fucking elected back in. Corin must spend a lot of time trying to work out how they get so many votes when they’re doing everything wrong. Corin !! Hey, Corin !! Those votes look good mate – count it buddy !!

(3) Watching Judith Collins was like reading a KB comment – they’re cutting funding for cops on the roads, and putting more into things like solving burglaries. Now – where have we seen that before ? I don’t know . . .is it . . KB GD every day ? It’s like she’s listened to all the comments and then actually responded – wow, how about that folks ? Then of course National were – according to One Labour News – wrong for doing that because that would mean more road deaths. Tell me this – how many people have died while sitting thier driving test ? Exactly.

What is the hard scientific evidence to describe the relationship between road policing and idiots killing themselves exactly ? Is it like – ten less equivalent cop cars means one more dead ? What is the magic ratio ? They can’t tell you shit. It’s all just BS hand-wringing guesswork and arse-waffling. Really balanced analysis. Who the fuck is dying on the roads anyway ? No-one should be dying on the damn roads – how are they killing themselves ? What can the police do about persistent lawbreakers ? With the joke justice system ? Here’s a lot of fines – yeah, cool. Because that works with everyone, eh ? You have to do a lot on the roads to earn a prison cell. Oversimplified duh-duh TV news reporting for who knows who. Listen to the facts, and laugh at the fiction.

(4) Must be fuck all of any real importance going on in the world when a kiwi playing an American team sport dominates as a leading story for what seemed like ten minutes. I honestly don’t know why I’m expected to give a crap about it.

I love these stories. If you’re a school, then with the internet hawking over you, maybe you’ll have to think very carefully about how everything you say and write and set out is going to be played out and jumped upon by every last loser with a keyboard.

Aren’t they adorable ? Still got some of pre-net naivety to just make shit up as you go along – what we really meant was blah blah blah – that’s not the case at all – no we haven’t banned that, no we’re not enforcing such and such. These days you can’t be vague – it’s got to be well defined.

I loved principal Carol Coddington on Radio Live. Alison Mau was doing her best to make it some kind of body-shaming debate or other rating boosting nonsense. Carol was reeling at the media circus style accusations initially – and then with great pleasure for me she started to fight back, wresting control of the exchange and making point after point – without giving any pause for interuption. Good for her. I saw her on the news – does she have an overeating problem ? She looks unspeakably gargantuan. I wonder what she eats and drinks in a week ?

I saw on TV3 news – they got two opinions which played very very quickly – such is TV news – fast and utterly meaningless. Hilarious – they picked two ugly old white bags. How do they pick these people ? It’s not out of a hat at random I can tell ya. Not a random phone poll. Come on – what were these boring dried up old bags going to say about dresses in 2016 ? A couple of old prudes who grew up when anything above the knee made a woman a tart. Talk about dinosaurs. I suppose in a hurry during the day it’s only retired old prunes near the camera on the street – too funny. In less that one tenth of a second I knew word for word looking at their stunted genius faces exactly what was going to come out of their mouth. There’s two women that never had an orgasm nor wanted one.

Ok – so if you wear a backless dress lower than the armpits, you’re clearly dressed like a whore. No cleavage ? No split higher than the knee ? Aha. Yes – the little wee catholic school girls must look virginal, non-sexual – like good girls. Nice girls. Well brought up girls. You don’t want to send the wrong message. Or signals. Or feel attractive and sexy. Catholic girls aren’t meant to be sexy. Or dress to kill. We’re not looking for the wow factor. That’s wrong, don’t you know. It’s wrong to even like the wow factor – and if you could have it, well – we’re telling you you don’t want it. Nice girls don’t do wow. Play it safe – go for a really boring nothing crap dress. Sweet. Just remember – the more skin, the more sin. Wouldn’t you love to see them have a beach day in Feb with the Liston boys ? Oh shit – they want to wear bikinis, can you imagine ? 95% of their skin will be on display – we’ll have to close the school down after such a scandal. Young women’s skin !!
