Time to merge TVNZ and Red Radio. This would enable the radio to be paid for from TV and thus a reduction in the misuse of public money.

I heard on Paul Henry this morning that Moko’s mother will be on The Story on TV3 tonight. Sadly, many on this blog are tired of hearing about the murder of Moko and think Penny’s rates are much more important. I view people more important that money.

As one who voted for The Conservative Party in the last election, (and I have apologised for that error) can I say, that the “Conservative” brand is now so tainted, that I don’t think I could ever bring myself to vote for anyone still sickeningly picking over the carcass.

And anyone seriously trying to resurrect it should really seek some professional help, the battle of the egos are not making anyone look good.

I’m no expert in matters pertaining to the Official Information Act, but to my mind these questions must be answered by Radio NZ, with regard to TVNZ and RNZ’s joint Panama Papers “operation”:

* What was the total financial commitment from RNZ to its joint Panama Papers operation with TVNZ including staff costs, any costs incurred in obtaining information from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), and any other costs incurred during the operation?

* Did RNZ make any payment to Nicky Hager?

* Who gave authority for the use of taxpayer funds for this operation?

* Did RNZ separately. or jointly with TVNZ agree not to investigate the identity of “John Doe” as part of deal with the ICIJ, Nicky Hager, or any other person or organisation?

I am strongly considering writing to Broadcasting Minister Amy Adams calling on her office to conduct a full inquiry into the use of taxpayer funds to attack the Government. It is high time Radio New Zealand was reminded that the taxpayer funds its operations, and that using taxpayer funds to try and bring the Government down on behalf of a known anti-National activist is a blatant misuse of public money.

This pretty much matches up with my observations. Hillary supporters are the most vocal in signalling their virtues and telling everyone how smart they are but what they posses in self-promotion, they lack in social graces and any kind of learned wisdom.

You can almost guarantee they’re collecting a cheque in some form from the government whether as a government worker, government contractor, beneficiary or as a “student” at “uni” racking up debt to fund a useless degree in social sciences.

Watched a number of programs over the weekend, and this morning, where the interviewee said that the Government needs to spend more on this and that (i.e. Housing for poor). Not one interviewer asked the question “Where will the money come from?”
We need angry Andy in power he can spend billions more without increaseing taxes or borrowing while also giving everybody a living wage.

I think your objections are woefully misplaced, KS. Radio New Zealand is not funded to provide things that you personally approve of. It is a public service broadcaster. While things like the Panama papers, dirty politics, the role of our troops in Afghanistan, the machinations of the National Party, ‘Corngate’ and the inner workings of the GCSB may not interest you, they are definitely suitable topics for journalism.
I’m sure you don’t complain when RNZ attacks the Labour Party for its various gaffes and foolish policies…

I seldom listen to RNZ mikenmild, just like the overwhelming majority of New Zealanders. I stand by my claim that using public money to push a Nicky Hager conspiracy theory (which ironically turned out to be the dampest of damp squibs) is an inappropriate use of taxpayer resources.

There is no issue with IRD have a team dedicated to the Panama Papers, they provide value to NZ inc. These other clowns were only trying to add value to themselves, that is a key difference

IRD (as an example of a government department using tax payer $$) investigating the panama papers is obviously a good investment in resources, someone else employed by the tax payer (in this case RNZ) who come at an agenda with an obvious bias and spend $$ to support their agenda, not the truth, is not a good investment.

Moko’s mother was concerned about a sick child at Starship. We have no idea how sick the child was. She left Moko with an early child care worker. It appears CYF was told what Moko’s 8 year old sister said about the abuse. Instead of going to the house they rung up the evil woman and she told them the sister was the one who was abusing Moko.

The Govt need to make it mandatory that CYF visit and sight the boy (Moko) themselves when a claim of abuse has been made.

Supported by a police escort if necessary to reinforce the imperative need to gain entry past his abusers.

KS, I’m all for you writing to Amy Adams but my fear is that any inquiry would be be portrayed as an attempt by the Government to control the media.
The fact is that when radio started to become common in peoples’ homes in the 1930s the Labour Government of the day immediately legislated that only the Government could provide broadcasting services, thereby ensuring that only the Labour message could be heard via the radio.
Despite all that has happened since, RNZ (and to a lesser extent TVNZ) still think that this situation remains.
Best just to starve them out of existence or sell them off.

On the joys of socialism, I see things are going swimmingly over in Venezuela. Apparently if you own a factory but can’t buy raw materials because you have no real currency and try to shut up shop you get arrested and the state takes over. Shortages everywhere and the government taking no notice of the citizens. Should be an uprising or military takeover soon.

Chuck – I am aware of this but the other basic problem here which speaks volumes to me about the family dynamics and dysfunction present is the fact CYFS were involved at all.
Most families in NZ will never have any dealings with CYFS in their whole lives so just the fact that CYFS are involved with a family raises red flags that things are not quite a bed of roses to start with.
They are only the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff because so many families are unable or won’t take responsibility to sort there own shit out.

If we did merge TVNZ and RNZ I would suggest that a shift in HQ would be good for taxpayers. A town like Greymouth, which has problems with a mining downturn would benefit from having an influx of suits and hipsters. In addition the lower rents and the ability to pay lower wages would assist the taxpayers.
Not too far from Christchurch and with internet no need to be in Wellington and Auckland for all staff.

Under my model, pioneered in NZ by Newshub, you do not need to can National Radio, you simply merge the operations especially the newsroom and cull the unnecessary staff. It will not eliminate the problem, but it will reduce it.

regarding Concert Programme, it could be similar to Classic FM in UK, or be in 2 modes ad free but requiring a fee or with ads but free

It was really warm, then a dramatic temperature drop after the squall line (and hail) passed, all the windows fogged up.
The lightning was just non stop, very impressive!!!!
Westport looks like they’re about to get hit even worse.

Under my model, pioneered in NZ by Newshub, you do not need to can National Radio, you simply merge the operations especially the newsroom and cull the unnecessary staff. It will not eliminate the problem, but it will reduce it.

So how do you deal with the “no ads on Nat Rad” policy? I presume if they are merged, then it has to carry the ads. in which case

1. Why not keep them separate, but allow advertising so the radio can pay its way

2. The above seems more feasible as I can’t see how Nat Rad could go a full day sharing the TV feed. Newshub works because the TV and radio sync for a few hours in the morning (Paul Henry) and evening (main news bulletin). However, Morning Report is a radio programme, whereas Paul Henry’s is a TV programme that is also broadcast on the radio. Linking Morning Report and TVNZ’s ‘Breakfast’ is incompatible as they are so different one (one attempts depth, whereas the other is practically infotainment), so one will have to go. And who wants to listen to daytime TV on the radio?

Ultimately radio is a “hot” medium, certainly for news and analysis, whereas TV is a “cold” one, so they are not conducive to integration on a grand-scale. TV does breadth and emotion/intuition, radio depth and detail/intellect. I’d suggest if you attempted both, you would almost certainly fall between two stools, and fail at both.

I have no sympathy for those who trash other peoples houses.

Key also intimated on PH this morning that long term people in state houses are being difficult about moving to smaller, more suitable housing for their needs; or out of the state housing sector now that they are earning more than others more needy.

Personally, I’d rather change the name of the country, to Aotearoa, than change the flag.
It’d be good to change all those meaningless colonial place names – Wellington, Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, etc, etc to more appropriate ones too.

People living in cars and garages is a direct consequence of mass immigration.

Smith will not utter the word and yet if they cut immigration and let the country try and catch up on infrastructure etc it would be the best response.

Um, no more than an uptight honky faux American getting hot under the collar because the language of the original settlers in what is officially a bi-lingual nation (actually, tri-lingual as deaf signing is also an official language) is, rightly IMHO, minted on our banknotes.

Like when the All Blacks play at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, it reads “Cymru vs Seland Newydd” on the scoreboard. And don’t get me started about those bloody Taffies singing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau in what is a primarily English-speaking country…

Speaking of “Cymru vs Seland Newydd” a favourite sports photo of mine was of the old Cardiff Arms Park scoreboard at the River Taff end (I think, with maybe Cardiff Castle in the background) which read 12-13 to the visitors just after “Colt” McKechnie kicked that last minute penalty in 1978 – with a little help from Andy Haden. I digress…

I see nothing wrong with living in a garage as a first step to home ownership .. I bought and lived in a s/h school bus as my first step BUT these days that is no longer a viable option, in main centres anyway. Lived in the Milford Motor Camp but when I visited awhile back it was gone .. replaced by multi-million houses. Progress? too right … except for those who have not made it.

So Key is out of touch says little angry who signals the start of a new week by jamming both feet in his mouth by, in effect, saying we should be spending more money on social housing (ie taxpayer-funded for those of you not up with the new social speak) and not worrying about getting someone out of a house who shouldn’t be there.

We should just build another house for the person who does need it. Let’s see how that pig flies.
