If one needed any further proof that corporates, councils, governments are in cohoots with one another, you need go no further than the selling off of water from the ashburton aquifier ! Billions of litres of water to be sold for an offshore water bottling company

This is fucking outrageous, when that area suffers from significant drought, and locals cannot even purchase or extend their own water needs.

But I am not surprised, this also happens in the California area – major drought, and the authorities selling off billions of litres of water from the very supply required for its citizens.

No consultation – all very hush hush and under the table like behaviour

Heard the guy from the” green party” the Mr Bean look-a like calling for a hundred million dollars of taxpayers money to be injected into Kiwibank. Seems part of the money ,if that was succesful ,would surely be gouged from old age pensioners meagre investments,in all banks,where their returns are already taxed. Would have thought the joke party would have called for no tax on bank savings,which already is double taxed.Once when it is on earnings,and secondly on investing.

More than 200,000 companies, foundations and trusts are contained in the leak of information which came from a little-known but powerful law firm based in Panama called Mossack Fonseca. The law firm is one of the world’s top creators of shell companies, which can be legally used to hide the ownership of assets.

The data includes emails, contracts, bank records, property deeds, passport copies and other sensitive information dating from 1977 to as recently as December 2015.

Consent is being witheld more and more across the whole country these days – Look at Hawkes Bay, as another example of this egregious restrictions for locals – but if the dollars are flashed in front of their eyes, anything is possible. Very corrupt in my view

So what would be a clear law?

At one extreme: No need for employers or school principals to take any measures, they won’t be held accountable for anything that happens to any of their employees or pupils while on their premises. Hand a chainsaw to the 17-year-old apprentice on his first day and tell him to work it out? Kids want to dangle off a rotting branch that overhangs a busy road? No problem, hey sh*t happens. That’s clear, simple and doesn’t need any enforcement.

At the other extreme: If anything at all happens and an employee or pupil is injured, no matter what the circumstances, the employer is liable. Employee was on drugs, not wearing the safety kit provided, in contravention of a clear instruction? Kid had ignored several warnings and climbed over a fence to get to the tree? Whatever, sunshine, you’re nicked. That’s clear and simple, and easy to enforce.

Both clearly unsatisfactory though, so what we want is something in between that effectively discourages gross negligence without making it impossible to do anything at all, takes account of the fact that every workplace and every school is different, and make it quite clear what needs to be done so that there can be no doubt or unclarity. For example, what should be done to manage the risk of accidental drowning at school?

Either: Wherever there is water (of whatever sort) it must be fenced off, the fence to have the following specified dimensions, be made of the following specified material, be maintained according to the following schedule. That’s clear and simple, but may be totally inappropriate and disproportionately expensive for different circumstances.

Or: Specific, detailed requirements, differentiated according to how deep the water is, whether it is free flowing (how fast?) or not, whether it is seasonal or not, how far it is from the classrooms, etc etc etc. Over to you to search through the several thousand pages of detailed instruction until you find the bit that exactly matches your particular circumstances (or pay somebody else to do so). Once you’ve found it, that’s clear and simple, and it will be easy to demonstrate to the inspector that you’ve done exactly what it said. And that’s only drowning – now for the several thousand pages specifying what to do about fire risk, depending on the age of the building, the age of the children, whether there are trees nearby, whether there is a road outside …

Both also clearly unsatisfactory, so what do we want? Seems we’re not happy with a law that places some responsibility on an employer or principal to decide for themselves what is sensible, and on compliance officers to decide what is reasonable, in the light of the particular circumstances of each particular case – because that leaves scope for doubt and uncertainty. Indeed, we’ve been very clear in discussion here what we don’t want.

But what then do we think the law should say?

The right is to extract up to 45 litres per second over many years. That’s a tiny amount.

45 litres/sec is 0.045 cumecs. Compare that with the rivers in the area: http://www.ecan.govt.nz/services/online-services/monitoring/river-flows/Pages/River-flows-south.aspx

It is only 0.06% of the flow of the Rangitata river. About two and a half cups out of every 1000 litres
Or 0.025% or the Rakaia. About one cup out of every 1000 litres.

I’d rather divert that anger towards how the media are manipulating people through their alarmist headlines.

I only heard part of a discussion on Fox last night but from what I did hear Obama has apparently censored a speech by the Frence President at the nuclear conference where he refers to Islamic terrorists. This phrase was later deleted from the video of the speech on directions of Obama.

Google Maps tells us that it’s 73.3km (52 minutes without traffic) from Wanganui to Palmerston North. The current Palmerston North mayor, Grant Smith, has said:

Obama is doing it again.

To persuade the Republican-controlled Congress to refrain from rejecting the Iran deal, even under the shamefully indulgent Corker-Cardin process to which GOP leaders agreed, the Obama administration made two key promises. The first was that, if Congress went along with Obama on dismantling nuclear sanctions (for the purportedly greater good of winning the terror regime’s commitment not to build nuclear weapons), the administration would stand strong on other sanctions — sanctions that punish Iran for its terror promotion, ballistic-missile development, and related aggression. The second promise was that Iran would continue to be banned from the U.S. financial system.

The latter is a critical restraint on the mullahs. Because the dollar is the world’s reserve currency, the inability to transact in dollars is a significant impediment to commerce — and thus a fitting punitive measure against a rogue nation that bankrolls jihadists. Moreover, because Iran’s economy is dominated by a terrorist entity (the Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps), a key component of which is the Quds Force (again, formally designated as a terrorist organization), insulating our financial system from Iran’s prevents our banks and commercial actors from supporting Iranian terrorism (after all, Obama is already doing quite enough of that).

Meldonium has been used by Eastern European athletes for nearly fifty years because it theoretically helps to reduce magnesium loss during exercise – it is virtually unknown in the West though there is probably some equivalent

Suddenly in December WADA announced it was banned from Jan 1 and sure enough in January they decided to test a lot of athletes for “biological passport” purposes and got a lot of Russians and other East Europeans in their net – this being an Olympic year and all

If you don’t realize this was a set up….

You make a good point, and the numbers appear alarmist.

However, that is not the end of the story in my books –

– Why is it that NZ thinks selling water to allcomers is a good idea ? If you ask the Joe punter, in my view they would say – NO
– Why are locals prevented (by the Resource management act) from requesting the use of this (supposedly) surplus water.
– Why (if it is true) has this been done by a backdoor non consultative means ?

Then there are Bank accounts emptied and closed.
Was that just entitlement ?
Just what were the purported “activist” expenses?
Was it sleeping bags and tents?, communications? food?
Was there a conflict of interests ?

Open the books !
All of this should be open and exposed.
Where are the minutes of a properly constituted meeting, that ratified the purported expenses claimed.?
Who were the “attendees” of that meeting? Was there a quorum?
Who was the Chairman, movers and seconders?
Was there a conflict of interest of some of the attendees?

Open the books so we can all ‘follow the dollar’?

So far in following the dollar from a closed bank account; It all seems to go to a protesting claimant of a “public watch dog”.

More casualties of the myth of China’s “capitalism”.

China is dumping steel on markets round the world, hammering local producers.

State-owned groups, with shares sometimes held by provincial governments, dominate the Chinese steel industry, which has expanded dramatically since China joined the WTO. China now produces about half of the world’s steel, and owns six of the world’s biggest steel making groups.

With the big slowdown in the Chinese economy, China has announced production cutbacks, and the Chinese industry is estimated to have lost at least around 16 billion NZ dollars in 2015. However, rather than face the political kickback from wiping sufficient jobs – hundreds of thousands – China is dumping its steel on world markets and has slapped a tariff of almost 50 per cent on specialist high-quality steels it has been importing, including from Britain.

One of the smarter countries to react has been the United States, which has imposed a tariff of around 250 per cent on China steel.

We have a steel mill at Glenbrook, owned by Australian company Blue Steel after surviving ownership by the flaky NZ investor Equiticorp. In August Bluesteel warned NZ Steel at Glenbrook would have to slash costs and could face up to 1000 job losses and even mothballing.

If that happens, let the blame go where it deserves to fall: on a huge, foreign, State-controlled industry, and not on free world competition. In the meantime, it might be interesting if the MSM could find out for us whether the free trade agreement with China provides any protection for NZ Steel and what are the chances of our industry surviving China’s protectionism and dumping.

I always laughed ironically when the Bolger Govt in the 1990s sold the forests to a JV with the Chinese government-owned CITIC.
The argument for selling the forests- government should not own forests. OK we will sell them to another govt then.

Issues which was used in mitigation , reducing her sentence .Also not forgetting the incident occurred over five years ago.

Ah good morning to the Stephiepeople team (12.04 post). Good morning, good morning …. good morning to all of you.

If you are referring to the Somali woman who knifed the two pilots of an NZ regional plane, while it was flying, I’m not sure why you appear to defend her. She was a Muslim, and so was the young Somali man who knifed people in the streets of Christchurch.

This was before the days any Muslim violence was blamed on ISIL brain washing. Then the excuse always was, as for these two, that they were mentally disturbed. There were other cases in Christchurch, as in the case of the man (from some Muslim country, I understand) molesting women joggers in the Port Hills.

The local Muslim community seems to have blamed “mental health issues” as they sought to restrain local MSM from publishing facts of the case.

Still, the fact that NZ jihadis have joined their brothers in ISIL does establish that Muslims have created a new security threat for NZ. We can agree with all of you Stephiepeople on that.

Here are the facts in NZ. We have had one plane hijacking by a Muslim, numerous assualts by Muslims, including sexual assaults and knife attacks, and we have local Muslims leaving to join ISIS.

That’s the reality of Islamic multiculturalism in NZ.

And now we are importing even more, it’s going to get a lot worse.

That volume of water over many years should not be a big issue and the aquifers that are recharged all the time can handle the extraction.
What is hard to take is the way our own producers are clobbered with ongoing compliance/ regulation costs many of which are unnecessary.

The big issue around water is the underhand moves by government to hand over control of our water to the special people.

I refer again to excellent articles on nzcpr.com that set out the real concerns kiwis should have about water.In fact there should be major protests about what is proposed.

She is a golfing superstar, and I am incredibly proud she calls New Zealand home. Here’s hoping she can add an Olympic gold medal later in the year.
