Sometimes folks can be fooled by a pinkish colour in cooked young chicken meat near to the bone.
Pigment from the bone marrow (haemoglobin) can colour the meat. (I always eat this meat and give my fuss-pots the white (tasteless) breast meat.

Hi Milkensop, I’m back to comment on your citing of place names with non-Maori diacritical marks (your 11.18 and 11.34 posts).

1. The Attaturk memorial in Wellington. This is not a place name in the full, geographical and common sense. But it’s not necessary to use the Turkish-adapted alphabet to describe the Turkish leader around the times Turkey was butchering a million and a half Christian Armenians. Attaturk without diacritical marks is correct in English.

2. Adelie Cove, in the Ross Dependency (this isn’t really in NZ), and Eboule Peak on Campbell Island are correctly spelled in English without diacritical marks, just as cafe is (rather than café).

The use of foreign-language diacritical marks in English is an affectation. It’s pompous to write in English Barçelona for Barcelona, for example. Or bíró for the biro pen named for its Hungarian inventor Bíró.

For the effete who want to use foreign-language diacritical marks in English, the message is: if you aren’t going to be a mere hypocritical and pompous skite, go all the way – “Roma” for Rome, “München” for Munich, “Warszawa” for Warsaw, and “Москва” for Moscow.

Leave non-English diacritical marks out of English – including Maori diacritical marks.

I get really irritated by the ridiculous expectation / fashion that all NZ placenames with Maori origin have to have exact Moari pronunciation when speaking English.

It just sounds affected and pretentious. As does anyone who calls Paris, Germany, Japan, Cologne (etc) “Paree”, “Deutschland”, “Nippon”, “Koln” when speaking English.

(I’ll pronounce Waitemata like a fluent Maori speaker when they pronounce Point Chevalier like a Frenchman)

We have English as our predominant official language. If you want Maori signs that means there will be two signs for each position, otherwise there will be no English signs.

If two signs are uneconomic, let’s go with English the present international lingua franca. If you’re not a native-English speaker, reading English will be hard enough without popping it into a minority language alphabet.

The pronunciation will count mainly for the locals and they can be taught. English spelling already stands for different pronunciations of the same letters.

However, again Haawea should be the Maori pronunciation if that is correct, and the spelling in Maori-language text.

For English-language purposes, perhaps the macron could be used as secondary information. Some languages, for example some of Slavic ones, use emphasis marks to show which syllable is stressed in a word, but in road/street signs and general newspaper use or in books, these emphasis marks aren’t printed.

For example, an English-language NZ dictionary or atlas could include in its definition of “Hawea”, as well as the word in English as at present, the macron to indicate this is the stressed syllable in correct Maori pronunciation. Perhaps this secondary information could be in italic or square brackets, or both. However, the version of the word with the macron wouldn’t be included on road and business signs or in newspapers, books, business communications, and so on.

Mikenmild _ of course pronunciation is important when speaking another language. If I were to speak Maori, I would take care over my pronunciation, just as I would try to get my French or German pronunciation right when speaking that language.

But when I say ‘I went to Hawea” I’m speaking English.

“Haere ahau ki Hawea” is Maori.

And if someone said “Haere ahau ki Wellington”, they should pronounce “Wellington” in whatever way makes sense in a Maori sentence. I certainly wouldn’t expect them to replicate the precise pronunciation used by the Duke of Wellington when he introduced himself.

How do we distinguish long vowels from short vowels in English?
How do I know to use a long vowel in “fate”, but a short vowel in “fat”.

We learn by listening and imitating the speech we hear around us.

Read up on the history of use of macrons and other diacritics in Maori…..
Used quite inconsistently for over 100 years…. and still somehow Maori learnt to pronounce words correctly.

Dunedin has to be said with an educated lowland Scottish accent;
Balclutha with a Gaelic lilt;
Alexandra as we would a Danish word;
Birkenhead with a Liverpool accent;
Sandringham as the Queen would;
Whitby like a Yorkshireman;
Ardmore as an Irishman
and the Bombay Hills should be Mumbai…

And to make sure everyone takes it seriously, diacritical marks won’t be enough: we’ll just use the IPA symbols on all our road signs. That’ll help everyone.

The fashions in Maori spelling and pronunciation is about nothing but the exercise of power. A special interest group wanting to make the life of the general populace harder for their amusement because they are weak and insecure about themselves. Grownups do not require constant fawning admiration of their every action or continual genuflection and obsequious pandering by everyone around them, that is the behaviour of tedious pouting children.

In every language pronunciation changes over time, look at latin and germanic language divergences over two thousand years, or polynesian language divergence over 1-2000 years. Or even differences in spoken english around the world 300 years after spread of English. The pronunciation of Maori now will be much different from that of 2-3 centuries ago and would have been widely divergent throughout NZ pre-European anyway. So all this requirement to add tricky inflections etc to the written form of an invented universal modern Maori is just posturing bullshit, helpful to noone, and actually off-putting to majority of NZers. It’s the teenager going vegan to make life difficult for the parents. Written and spoken language are two different beasts. Written is for quick efficient dissemination of information, while spoken can more easily follow fashions pronunciation for identity reasons with no extra overhead – and that does not need to be exactly captured in the written form.

Just watching the News on TV1. I agree that there’s no concrete evidence that I can find on the net to support the accusation that our soldiers were spat upon by the scum protesting their return from Vietnam. That doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen. Two reasons:

1) Those charged with recording NZ’s history are by & large left leaning garbage determined to have things written from their perspective. Academia & the MSM are full of them & they’ve had over 40 years to bury what they will just as they have rewritten history to show the terrible lives of the Tangata Whenua at the hands of the evil white man a couple of centuries ago.

2) TV at the time showed the unwashed contained behind mesh barricades. This gave them the courage to hurl abuse & probably phlegm safe in the knowledge that they couldn’t be assaulted as they richly deserved.

Can you point out where someone said that the cops should spray the house with bullets? It’s not like this scum prick is arguing it wasn’t him that shot the dog and tried to kill a cop. He is a real threat to the Police who are there. So if they get a clear shot they should take it.

Also I hope the food they sent him had a huge dose of laxatives in it. He would really be shitting himself then.

As I scroll through comments, good bad, nonsensical, and indifferent here on NZ,s best political blog.

I muse about readers/commenters here who actually employ Kiwis, pay them, allow them to pay the mortgage, make lunches in the morning (or night before), do the grocery shopping.

Fuck all here I would bet.

I know there are a few genuine employers who comment, but the majority of bullshitters here, are just that, and probably on leave from the left blog..I forget its title.

In the last week, we have employed 4 Kiwis, we are thankful for their time and effort

Hopefully we can compliment each other. I have nothing but respect for those of us who want to earn legitimately.

It’s a good feeling employing Kiwis, and contributing to their lives….we employ 30+ wonderful countrymen.

Today, leading up to the long weekend we had a FO Friday…2pm finish for Anzac.

I own a company that employs 8 people at present. Hopefully it will be 9 next week. While it is a good feeling contributing to society it is also a burden. If I fuck up and ruin my company the I ruin not only my life, and that of my wife and 2 kids, but also that of my 7 other staff and their families – nearly 40 people. It is a worry I am prepared to bear but it fucks me off royally when I hear people bitching about “greedy business owners” as very few if any seem to acknowledge that people like me put everything on the line or recognise the contribution people like me make to the country. Our last PAYE return was $10k – people like me never get thanked for that though.

You correct. They are now trying to play the scam again. Just after she announced she was going for the top job is was on the news that Davis said he would go and live in the US if she got the job. Many in NZ new the marriage was a scam but probably not too many overseas.
