John Shewan is one of the most professional men I have had the pleasure of meeting. Little, conversely, comes across as a coward and a bully – wonder if he would care to make some of the claims he has made outside of parliament?

But then, with his history as a unionist, I guess I shouldnt have much of an expectation for anything different.

This story on Stuff today struck me a little bizarre –

Two new Navy boats that were commissioned to patrol New Zealand’s waters haven’t been to sea in years.
In-shore patrol vessels HMNZS Pukaki and HMNZS Taupo only entered into service in 2009, but they’ve effectively been mothballed, according to Defence Force figures provided to Newshub.
Pukaki hasn’t been to sea since the end of 2012, while Taupo has remained in port since 2013.
A third vessel hasn’t been to sea in the past three months, leaving just one remaining in-shore patrol vessel to carry out their work.

Thought i would tune into the news on the Liebour/Green imbedded sycophant reporters on the television channel which masquerades as TVNZ. Reason was to hear the best good news story, in at least twenty years for 110,000 small businesses,the life blood of the nation, . It was to say that John Key had announced that the hated provisional tax was to be ended ,and replaced with a much simpler tax. Sadly not to be,as the anti National Government, and John Key haters had censored the good news story,and told us about a police raid and one on an old story about dog attacks. Finally they then wheeled out MR 7% Angry Andy Little, allowing him to utter a defeatist gloomy comment,as well as berating John Key for such a positive good news announcement, and accused him of having a hidden agenda. Maybe with Angry Andy making such negative response to the good news,as a so called leader of a party, where the previous leader was sorry for being a man,perhaps 7% is flattering.

Bill English is under fire for stating at a Federated Farmers lunch that some kiwi workers are hopeless.

CTU president, Richard Wagstaff says this is disgusting attitude from English as kiwi workers are known to be dedicated, hard workers and employers should look at in the mirror if they are not getting a good response from their staff they should look at the way they treat their staff, and working conditions.

Bill Engish stands by his statement as realistic of the NZ workforce.

– Good on you Bill. Too many who have lost the work ethic this country was built on.

Little owes Shewan a complete, unconditional apology. He made allegations in the House yesterday which Shewan refutes, based on a newspaper story and “the reports that we have got”. He has screwed up big time, and now has a large hole to dig himself out of.

One can only wonder; did “the reports that we have got” emanate from Grant Robertson’s office? And is this Andrew Little’s dead snapper moment?

Ironically, one thing that might turn that around is an increase in the number of Charter Schools. But if Labour has its way, that door will be closed.

Bill English tells the truth and Labour and the unions are upset.Tell me why we have record employment numbers and the same people that moan are still on benefits while the record numbers of immigrants can find jobs,the same reason as happened fourty years ago and is still happening now Generational families that want wages without working.Having four or five children and not working you are able to lives reasonable life while your children get feed by charities any the Government one also get clothing ,shoes and extras so why would you want to work

Defence procurement can often be a bizarre mix of political, technical and bu8reacratic factors. Gerry Brownlee, of course, has blamed the previous government, which acquired these vessels under Project Protector.
The Navy had all along wanted an extra frigate or two, rather than being saddled with a mix of offshore and inshore patrol vessels and the multi-role ship, but were stymied by successive governments since the 1990s.
This situation appears similar to a famous case in the 1970s, where a clash between funding decisions and technical requirements led to the purchase of the Lake-class patrol vessels, which were too big for inshore work and too small for offshore patrols.

The general attitude of some is appalling.
A family member recently resigned from teaching carpentry skills at a workforce training scheme for 2nd chances – those who had left school without any inclination to work.

He got fed up attempting to get them to show any initiative to help themselves and learn any skills they could use for the rest of their lives in employment.

Probably didn’t help he is a skinny white guy.

When I was working I got the -pleasure- of teaching young
workers how to write factory English, basic maths and to show them
how to concentrate on the job at hand.
Schools don’t teach people work skills.
In fact I’m unsure as to what apart from filling academias ivory towers
schools actually achieve

The Bill English incident reminds me of the time when I cam back from Wellington to Auckland and was looking for a job.

Friend of mine directed me to a panel beater that needed an apprentice/shop hand. The only criteria was for me not to be drunk, not do drugs at work and turn up on time and turn up every day.

Being a young and devout Muslim, I only drank alcohol when Allah is not watching which is Friday 4:30om to 11:30pm.

So I was hired same day. No panel beating experience at all. Easy money while I found a better job. liek it so much worked there for 6 months.

When I entered the bush 10 days ago to hunt stags I thought to myself this tax avoidance m’larky could claim some NZ scalps.

After 10 days of no outside communication i expected, when finally able to tune into the news to find out that after several million leaked documents, endless front page press, numerous questions in the house and press releases from all the major political parties that they would be falling like dominoes in NZ big business.

Nope, didn’t happen and still the only person with any political connections that I’m aware of being busted for fiddling the taxman is Labours Chief of Staff.

Due to the wobble in the earths axis the radiation reaching our location from the sun changes as the year progresses.
We call the effect of these changes seasons.
The one we are presently in is called autumn and denotes a change towards colder weather due to less sun light .
Happens every single year without fail.

For all the use that those shitty little Navy inshore patrol boats are, they may as well have been “tinnies” with a .50 Browning mounted in the bow. As Gerry Baby says, they are frightening tubs when doing a job for which they are totally unsuited – patrolling New Zealand waters In fact, the Navy hates because they are scary.

So which effing Ministers put them in place? Oh, that’s right – Heather Clark and her sycophants of the day.

I saw a few of the Question Time in Parliament yesterday – my laughs for the day – and was appalled at Angry Andy – he was pathetic – a leader – I do not think so – he could not string two sentences together.

But the one who surprised me was Greenpeace Shaw – he was unable to say what he was trying to do, as he had no idea what to say, being egged on but Tubby as she tried to make him coherent.
I do not think I have ever seen such a poor performance – even against Angry.
I wonder whether he was on some sort of “medication”.

And quite justifiably so.

The defense procurements of the last Labour government were bizarre, and totally unsuited to NZ current or potential strategic needs. I honestly believe they were driven by a desire to be seen to spend money (to avoid accusations of running down the defense force) while still reducing NZ’s military capabilities as much as possible. They basically gutted the defense force, leaving it as a barely armed coast guard with a proud history.

New Zealand has a long history of fucked-up military procurement. My particular favourites:
– HMNZS Royalist – acquired in the 1950s. a specialist anti-aircraft cruiser designed to protect aircraft carriers
– the Lake-class patrol craft debacle of the 1970s
– the 2+2 decision about the Anzac frigates, with the extra two never bought
– HMNZS Charles Upham in the 1990s
– the multitude of LAVs
I don’t think there has been much good done since the RNZAF re-equipment in the 1960s (Skyhawks, Hercules, Iroquois).

Hmm. The problem is ‘Wanganui’ actually mean anything in Maori, as it is a mis-spelling of big (nui) harbour (whanga). A bit like in the old days when the All Blacks used to play Llanelly, until it was officially changed in 1966 to Llanelli (9, Seland Newydd 3, Sospan fach, sospan fach…the air was filled with singing and I heard a grown man cry,
Not because we’d won but because the pubs ran dry!).

How much is the feminisation of the total environment has been the cause of workshy young males?

Many young males especially from the lower socio economic have no decent male role models.
More than half in fact grow up in places where there is no stable male figurehead.
Right through primary school to puberty they mainly have female teachers.
They have to sit at desks whereas young males need to express bursts of energy and physical activity.
The likes of Scouts whilst a bit olde worlde was a place to learn skills. This is seldom an option now. The core learning years of 7 to 11 where Maths and English skills are instilled can be any area where the learning environment is counter intuitive.
They also need physical skills like woodwork, metal work and working on engines be it model aeroplanes, lawn mowers or cars to press their buttons.
It would be more important to address this than worry about which toilets for the gender confused.

You kill that creative energy AND have no positive male role models and you are not picking winners.

I have seen a screenshot of the tweet referred to and it is arguably defamatory, accusing Key of a criminal offence. The mere fact the WO won’t publish the screenshot because of the risk of being a party to defamation indicates the seriousness of it. Worse still, it was made during Question Time, at a time when Mallard is one of the Presiding Officers of the House.

David Carter needs to stand Mallard down as Assistant Speaker whilst this is investigated, as there seems to be a prima facie breach of privilege. This could also be the excuse Little needs to finally end Mallard’s political career.

Royalist and the Lake class are going back too far for my knowledge so I can’t really comment on those (although offhand the idea of an AA cruiser doesn’t seem silly for an island nation where air attack is one of the more likely threats).

The Charles Upham was a debacle, but that went wrong in the implementation not the concept. A strategic sealift craft is something that is very useful for the NZDF. Even after the navy gave up on the Charles Upham they retained the capability with HMNZS Canterbury. That element of Project Protector at least I will conceed was a good idea.

The Anzac frigates I would describe as one of NZ’s more successful military procurements. I’ve heard some complaints about their seakeeping in Antarctic waters, but by and large they have been very successful. It’s a pity we didn’t buy at least one more when we had the opportunities (a decision taken by the last Labour government). It would certainly have been a far better option for us than four unneeded inshore patrol boats. Probably better even than the reasonably useful offshore patrol boats.

What amuses me about Andrew Little is the unions are not worried that this Leader backed by them could bring about Labours demise.Why would the ex Presidents,MPsand former PrimeMinisters want this to happen and in my opinion the Labour Party must be in debt the unions and have now taken control.This may be one of the reasons why Labour can not raise funds and their big donors no longer contribute and the more the union dictates the missing millions will grow

Wanganui, born and bred there. Originally called Petre [ pronunciation Peter ]. The original settlers, not Maori, their settlement was called Putiki and was on the other side of the river, wanted to change the name to Wanganui without the h which they thought was ugly. The name was changed . The river was named by Maori, and if they had had a written language they would have spelt it with an h. But they did not name the settlement.
In Australia the aborigines used to catch eels in a river and they called the area Barramatta [meaning eels]. When the Europeans settled in that area they named it Parramatta. Will the name ever be changed? I very much doubt it.

Dime was driving to the office this morning.

Ill set the scene, sitting in my jeep, cruise control set to 109km/h, sipping away at a delicious coffee like an asshole..

I flick on ZB, its an ad break.

First Ad – If someone in your fleet crashes and youre the company director, you may get fined, go to jail, lose your house..

Third Ad – if you do business under the table, youre going to JAIL!!

Its the first ad i have the biggest problem with, some mine explodes 5 years ago on the west coast and now dimes buddies are shelling out many thousands of dollars on shit like scaffolding etc

One buddy was refused entry when he tried to take a step ladder on site. it had 2 steps on it. too dangerous.

Another buddy just increased his costs by $300 – $500 per job cause of all the time its going to take adhering to the new safety rules. he will also be doing less jobs per day cause of the extra time the bullshit takes.

thank god we will get a national govt soon who will fix all of this left wing crap.

I was just making a point that most governments have been terrible at defence procurement.

Re Royalist ( a hobby of mine) – it was customised for Arctic operations and, as I mentioned, refitted to protect an aircraft carrier. I also seem to recall it had odd calibre guns and a very short range for Pacific cruising. It was fobbed off onto us by the Brits – at a time when the chief of staff for the RNZN was still a seconded British officer who reported separately to the British High Commissioner about NZ defence policy!

The extra Anzacs should have been ordered in the 1990s, which was a terrible time of buying, basically, nothing. Yes, the sealift capability was a good idea, but terribly managed. The government thought it could get this o the cheap, while the defence officials thought they would be able to upgrade Charles Upham to a military capability. The government wouldn’t spend the money.

So far as I can tell, the procurement decisions of the early 2000s (LAVS, patrol craft, ditching air combat) were driven by a desire not to get anything too warlike.

KS- am torn on this one, on one hand it would be great to see Little hung drawn and quatered, on the other hand I wont him to lead labour to defeat in the general election…..phew, on reflection, happy to see him go, as no other candidate would perform better….

Nevertheless, RDM, having stood by Treasury’s opposition, joined Gordon, Macintyre, and Thomson in the latter’s office for their traditional post cabinet chin wag. The purchase was a funded with a large US military loan facility (forget the actual title)- a loan made on exceptionally favourable terms. But Treasury did not want the loan accepted. In fact, there was a surplus in the loan account. That was later used to buy more helicopters and aircraft spares.

Mikenmild, the Royalist was a Dido class anti-aircraft cruiser built in 1942-3, extensively modified in 1955. She was not entirely suitable if the RNZN was independent, but at the time the RNZN operated as an almost integral part of the RN and Royalist was in fact crewed by a mix of RN, RAN, and RNZN bods. For the time she was possibly the most effective larger ship available from acceptable sources. The USN could probably have provided something better with better range, but in context, I don’t think it was a notably poor decision. And just IMHO, but the Anzac frigates were pretty poor and way too expensive. We could have bought four better equipped ships elsewhere if we didn’t want, for political reasons, to support the notoriously inefficient Australian shipbuilding industry.

To my mind, the LAV purchase would be the single worst decision, the volume was so ridiculous.

Suffice to say it was highly defamatory and you would think that an Assistant Speaker of the House would know better that to use Twitter from inside the house to defame the Prime Minister.

But deleting the text doesn’t make the defamation any less.

Worse still he tweeted that during Question Time.

As I said above, I have seen the tweet myself; it was doing the rounds last night. Republishing it risks repeating Mallard’s alleged defamation, so WO is being sensible and responsible. The fact though that there are screenshots around is bad news for Mallard.

I hear you dime. As I write this morning a meeting is occurring in our district over a proposal to shut off the local water scheme for private houses. New regulations issued by the Waikato DHB mean that we either spend money to add infrastructure (chlorination, micro-filter, UV) to the scheme to bring it up to the new regs – or stop supplying farmhouses with the same water that goes into the troughs – as has been done since we built the scheme in 1983.

In all those years not a single person has caught any waterborne disease from this system, which has sand filtration and uses water coming out of a huge area of native bush.

I’m not even sure how they would know you were using the same water, since it’s piped to each farm and stored in generic tanks, with off-shoot isolation tanks to keep the houses going in case the system breaks down for a few days.

Be that as it may, their suggested alternatives include artesian wells, springs or roof run-off – all of which would actually take us back decades in time to systems that were more expensive, less reliable, and highly exposed to drought. Those and other reasons are why the system was built in the first place.

The Waikato DHB could make better use of its tax dollars by improving actual medical care – instead of chasing a bunch of distant farmers who have been living with well-understood risks that have not eventuated in thirty years.

And I’ll bet our local National MP has not a clue that this little piece of bureaucratic check-box ticking and bar-raising is even happening, nor what’s wrong with it. If he did know he’d probably approve the experts advice. After all, they’re experts in public health.

So far as I can tell, the procurement decisions of the early 1990s (LAVS, patrol craft, ditching air combat) were driven by a desire not to get anything too warlike.

Agreed, and this I believe was driven in large part by Helen Clark’s personal pacifism and dislike for the military. Deliberately trying to reduce the military capability of the defense force (without any public announcement or debate on the subject) is hugely worse than previous procurement stuff-ups, which were merely run-of-the-mill government incompetence.

Its the orientation of the hemispheres (due to Earth’s tilt) that changes as Earth orbits the Sun. The Southern Hemisphere is oriented toward the Sun for half the year. When the hemisphere is orientated toward the Sun the Sun’s light rays strike at a high angle (Summer). During Winter the Sun appears lower in the sky and rays of light striking Earth at a low angle and spread over a greater area.

Just to update having seen Mikenmild’s additional post. I don’t think Royalist was optimised for Arctic work, she did serve there relatively briefly in 1944, off Norway, but spent more time in the Mediterranean and Pacific. She was outfitted as an anti-aircraft frigate with 5.25″ HA guns optimised for the AA role. Later Colony class cruisers had automated 6″ turrets but although these had a longer range and were better for shore bombardment the automated turrets were troublesome and often jammed after 30 seconds or so of firing. The 5.25’s weren’t really an “odd calibre”, they were designed as HA guns with a much smaller and lighter mounting/shorter barrel and the ability to point nearly vertically upwards, and were reasonably common in the RN. The carriers had them, HMS Vanguard had them as secondary armament (after the main 15″ battery), all the Dido class had them. Royalist also had the most modern radar available and was additionally equipped for aircraft direction. She served in the Med during Suez, and when NZ decided to withdraw support for the Anglo-French action actually remained with the RN fleet providing radar and aircraft direction support as the RN had no equivalent immediately available. Like I noted, not entirely irrational if RNZN considered as an near integral part of RN.

She was (relatively) short ranged but longer ranged than the other cruiser class options available from the RN. A US ship would no doubt have been designed for Pacific cruising and have had a longer range. It wasn’t ideal, but Royalist had (just) enough range to operate if run economically.

Just as a footnote, a fellow I knew at school, his father served on Royalist as a CPO.

Currently the Earth is at aphelion during the Southern Hemisphere winter and perihelion during the summer. In about 13,000 years this situation will have reversed

People have tried to align this with glacial and interglacial epochs – it clearly has some impact on climate but exactly what impact is too hard to say

The RNZN never wanted Royalist; they wanted a six-frigate fleet. Royalist had been modernised at great cost by the Brits then mothballed – they wanted to get rid of it and knew a sucker when they met one.
The story of her involvement in the Franco-British attack on Egypt is a fascinating one. Royalist was operating with the RN Mediterranean Fleet after being taken over in the UK by the RNZN. The British just assumed she would stay as an integral part of the fleet when they invaded Egypt. New Zealand found itself being committed to war against Egypt without even being asked!

Correct Maggie. Interestingly, the Earth is actually closest to the Sun in early January during the Northern Hemisphere winter. As the Earth is closer to the Sun at that time it is moving a little faster than average (see Kepler’s 2nd law of planetary motion). What that means for us in the Southern hemisphere is that the Southern summer is actually shorter than the Northern summer and the reverse for winter. So we getting shorter summer and longer winter. We are being robbed blind! The government should be doing something about it!

Mike, that’s largely correct, as noted, the RNZN was seen as a nearly integral part of the RN and NZ seen as a thoroughly reliable ally. We were rather treated as almost a colony still, the Australians were pricklier. Royalist’s “sale” to RNZN was a means to keep it in commission outside the Navy Estimates.

I find the story of Suez most interesting when Holland ordered NZ (basically Royalist) to disengage, but in fact she remained with the fleet and active in the air-direction and radar picket role throughout. Like to see the correspondence, but likely enough Holland was well aware of this and was just establishing a “plausible deniability” scenario; there were mutterings of a Security Council investigation on war-crimes/warmongering that spooked NZ at the time.

Dog registration is a total scam at every level as I don’t believe it improves safety at all as only the non problem dogs owned by responsible people are usually registered anyway.
All it does as with a lot of other things in this country is monetarily punish law abiding people for no tangible outcome.
As for all the scum with non registered dogs who are mostly involved in dog attacks well they just carry on with their feral little lives not giving a damn about anything except being parasites and spongers on the rest of society supported by the PC brigade who keep trying to convince us all that it is not their fault.
