Regarding the Exclusive brethren article what struck me was the venom directed against the EB. It seems like the Exclusive brethren must be the worst people in the world. To me it also crossed the line between opinion and straight news reporting. It was supposed to be a headline news report, instead it was a hatchet job on the EB. If that’s their opinion fine but it was an opinion piece rather than any attempt at fair and objective news reporting.

Also the level of vitriol is amazingly high, these are obviously horrible people doing wicked things!

If they were terrorist Muslims they couldn’t have got a worse write up. Actually if they were terrorist Muslims they would have got a better write up. The reporter would probably would have visited the local mosque where they would write glowingly about the religion of peace and how we need to understand Islam better and not fall prey to Islamophobia.

Yes..and no. Unlike the universally negative term “cult”, “sect” has both a pejorative and non-pejorative sense, and context determines the meaning. The pejorative/negative sense, as rightly applied to the Exclusive Brethren, means they are insular, exclusive, and with very distinct doctrines and practises that are well-outside the mainstream Christian interpretation. That rightly applies to the EB…, and Brian Tamaki’s Destiny Church…but not to the Sallies. None of which stops them engaging in the political process – indeed all have at one time or another. And I have, btw, seen criticism of the Sallies here on KB, and also Whale Oil – which is a legitimate right for both the pres and public in a free democracy. As long as no one is defamed.

However, you can rightly describe the Sallies as a sect, if you mean a group that broke away from the mainstream (which is larger historically established groups such as Catholics, Anglicans, Presbyterians), and still retains a separate existence. As has been the case with the Sallies for over 140 years since William and Katie Booth set up shop in the East End of London. (as an aside they do have one very peculiar distinctive – they are the only church/denomination/sect I know of that do not administer sacraments).

The lefty press are being inconsistent. As you don’t see the Army being referred to as a sect.
Then the Salvation army reports push all the socialist buttons the pinkos love.
Providing plenty of fodder for cry of the week stories.

I believe what you are criticising is “editorial stance”. You may disagree with it – as I do too on occasions – but unless they are misreporting facts, then they do not have any obligation to write it up in a way that satisfies or pleases you. That’s just how it is with the Fourth Estate. Don’t want to be offended or annoyed? Don’t read it. And I’d suggest as the Exclusive Brethren got as good as they were giving out, then the scrutiny they received in 2005…and the decision to pop in from time to time and see what they are up when it comes to influencing public policy is fair enough.

Absolutely correct – and what undid it for Brash was that he was soooo stupid not to see the potential risk. Like Watergate, the incident itself was akin to the theft of a thimble in a monastery. But, especially in the context of an election, the public actually have very little by which to judge a politician’s competence (as the spin doctors are practicing their dark arts) other than how do they avoid or negotiate potential banana skins.

It is only religious and/or right-wing tribalism and personal bias that causes otherwise sound judges to think the Exclusive Brethren and Don Brash got a hard deal. A pious biased light-weight post like Scott’s above at 2:14pm – which, yet again fails to any example of misreporting of facts about the EB – demonstrates this to be so. No one was prosecuted, no one was fined, and most certainly no one was persecuted. Those who say or imply they were have no idea of what persecution really is.

Instead a bunch of idiots had an attempt at attack-politics blow up in their faces, and another idiot who should have realised that was a possibility all along did not sufficiently distance himself. Which is why Don Brash did not deserve to be Prime Minister, and why the likes of Helen Clark and John Key have what it takes to win that office.

I do wonder at the Pope’s mention of Judas and in the present context he uses his name.
Jesus knew what Judas was about to do and intimated that at the Last Supper.
So Jesus told him, “What you are about to do, do quickly.”
No Judas, no arrest, no completion of Christ’s plan.
Judas was part of a scheme, as was the arranged ass for Christ’s symbolic entry to Jerusalem, the already arranged upper room and other aspects of which the disciples seemed totally ignorant.

Jesus used Judas. The Pope could acknowledge that instead of prolonging myths.

I suspect that you, like myself, grew up in the age of Aquarius, hug everyone & the ‘melting pot’ as promoted by Blue Mink. We were young & idealistic but sooner or later most of us were forced to mature & accept responsibility for raising families.

The changes I faced included reassessing the company I kept & revisiting my suspicion – trust – early warning settings. To do this requires working out who is a danger to mum, the kids & later, the grandchildren. This is where we start to discriminate against those with proven track records.

For instance should the goal be safety then choosing a neighbourhood free from gangs, pitbulls & breeders is advisable. Should you not want your family blown up by some headcase religious wanker nor your daughters molested then you avoid the followers of Allah like a dose of the clap.

It’s called prejudice & it has served us very well.

I realise this sort of thing does not sit comfortably with you but unfortunately some religions and skin colours have certain propensities to do things more than others so in a lot of cases actually are a very good tool to predict culpability.
You might think that is racist but to a lot of people it is realist.

I just proved that your notion that we have no problems with the Muslim community in NZ is wrong. Your response? Denial. You tried to claim, stupidly, that the Pakistanis who made up the child molesting rape gang were not Muslims. You have made no condemnation of that horror. Your response to the Cologne sexual assaults was not condemnation, but condemnation of those who DID condemn it.

To the person who gave me the downtick — a few recent experiences….. the maori 11yr old boy who smashed kids cycle helmet then threatened to beat up my partner when she told him off — what kind of 11yr old does that? Evil. Imagine when that little monster gets older.

Then, the 3 maori youths who the other week threatened to smash my family and I (including my 7yr old) walking back to our car at night because we looked at them — although, given they were walking down the road swearing and jumping in front of traffic I admit we probably did look at them . No doubt their younger protege from the previous experience will join them in prison sometime in future.

And today, the maori lady, and i use that term loosely, who gave me the fingers because she didn’t approve of the way i parked in a nearly empty car park. Then called me the f word and honky and a racist rant etc etc. With kids in the car. She didn’t like my parking and for this I receive a hate bile filled rant ?

Honestly, what is it with these people?

Clearly where money and lawyers are involved anything or everything is possible.

Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca bragged to clients how easy New Zealand laws made it for foreign investors to hide their tax-free profits, according to new revalations in the “Panama Papers.”

The Australian Financial Review reported today that in 2012 Mossack Fonseca’s New Zealand staff reported advice they received from an executive at Nexus Trust: “NZ has very weak laws in regard to due diligence; they only require utility bill and passport. Trust companies are not required to hold a licence.”

There was no need to register who put assets into a foreign trust and, according to documents the AFR has seen. A Staples Rodway lawyer reportedly explained another advantage: “The New Zealand definition of ‘beneficial owner’ is different to that of many other jurisdictions, in that we do not require due diligence on the person/s who will benefit from the funds.”

Two years later the firm’s New Zealand office was asked for “combo packs.” The packs were a combination of New Zealand foreign trusts (which pay no tax on foreign income) and what is described as Look Through Companies (LTCs), which could be owned by the trusts, and which also pay zero tax on offshore earnings, the AFR reported.

Prime Minister John Key has told Radio New Zealand an independent review of the legislation around foreign trusts is likely to go ahead.

Key told RNZ’s Morning Report he would ask Cabinet today for an independent expert to review New Zealand’s rules around foreign trusts.

“It’s highly likely I think that the government will ask an expert in this area to undertake an independent review just for good order.”

Key told RNZ he doesn’t believe he has ever used an offshore account to hide money, but did have a superannuation fund in Singapore after working and living in the country.

Its a big issue, needs to be made transparent and one would think that a Commission of Inquiry is well justified if for no other reason than the transparency and the ability for all to hear the arguments.
