The ceasefire in Syria (which is not really a ceasefire, but rather a “focusing of combat operations”) is holding surprisingly well. This is primarily due to the brilliant tactic of forcing each fighting group in Syria to define itself either as a “good moderate”, and be guaranteed safety, or as as en “evil terrorist” and become an indisputably legitimate target which anybody can engage. De jure, the only ones who can legally engage anybody in Syria are only the Russians and the Syrians, everybody else, including the US-led coalition, is present there in total illegality, but de facto the latest agreement also acknowledges the right of all parties to engage the “evil terrorists”. By forcing each group to self-define itself the Russians have completely taken away any credibility from the rather ludicrous accusation that they were bombing the “good terrorists”, the latter category having basically disappeared from the conflict. And to be really honest and blunt about it, the US has been forced to accept the Russian definition of a terrorist as “anybody who fights against the Syrian government”. Oh, I know, they never agreed to such a wording, but since those who until now fought were categorized into “good” and “bad” opposition to the Syrian government and since now the “good opposition” accepts the truce/ceasefire, that means that all those who fight against the government are ipso facto “bad”. Thus anybody taking up arms against the Syrian government is “bad” and a legitimate target for total elimination. QED.

The worst part for the Americans must have been that they waltzed into this conceptual trap with their eyes absolutely open, but that they could do nothing about it. They knew that their only chance to avoid a humiliating military defeat on the ground was to transmogrify it into a “ceasefire” followed by some kind of vague “transition”. So yeah, they hate this outcome, but the other one was even worse. Besides, some officials no doubt realized that the American policy in Syria was totally insane, bordering on a kind of dissociative identity disorder in which various agencies were not aware of what the others were doing and, in some cases, were even literally fighting each other on the ground. To persist on such an absolutely crazy course was bringing the risk of a major war with Russia, something neither the Europeans nor a big part of the (non-Neocon) US deep state really wanted. So while we can legitimately pour scorn on the imbecility of the Obama Administration’s policy in Syria, let us always also remember that it could have been worse (just imagine Hillary in the White House!). By stepping back from the brink the USA did the right thing.

And it’s not like we should choke up on gratitude either. First, the USA created his mess to begin with and, second, it’s not like right now they have fully recovered their sanity either. Not only is the US seething at its humiliation by Russia but now some die-hard Neocons want to try Assad, Russia, Iran for ‘war crimes’ in Syria! That nonsense is the direct result from this uniquely American mix of delusion and impotent rage about Russia and, really, the entire world. Something like a child breaking a toy he was told he could not have. While I would never discount the possibility of the USA doing something really reckless, the main danger today, as before, comes not from the USA but from the toxic and explosive Turkey+Saudi combo…

Seriously though – I thought the judge behaved in a very proper fashion. He was very respectful (referring throughout to the loser as “Sir” even after he’d been clearly in contempt of the court) and very clear in his communication.

Tyrants such as Gaddafi, Mubarak & Saddam Hussein crushed dissent without mercy yet it would not be hard to argue that the average citizen of their fiefdoms enjoyed more individual freedom & prosperity under their rule than what preceded it & what came afterwards. There are no successful democracies.

Why do you think this is so? Has Islam made them childlike & easily subordinate? Is life cheap to them? For whatever reason it seems a sure guarantee that Assad is still Syria’s best bet…..warts & all.

Most GHCN data for February is now in – a few gaps like Greenland, Mexico, Peru. For TempLS mesh (report here) the anomaly average rose from 0.889°C to 1.085°C. January had dropped from December; but still, the February reading beat the previous record month of December by 0.115°C. TempLS grid had a similar rise, but from a lower January base.

This adds to the evidence that February was very warm indeed. The NCEP/NCAR index was up by a similar amount (0.175); the two satellite indices were up by about 0.3°C. Each, of course, highest in its record. I would expect comparable rises in the main surface indices (GISS, NOAA, HADCRUT). GISS, for example, could approach 1.3°C.

The heat was especially in a broad band from W Europe to E Siberia, with a branch down through China. Another branch from Alaska to US Midwest. I think the patterns around Canada/Greenland may change with more data coming in, with possible upside to the global total.

The breakdown plot shows heat almost everywhere, except for Antarctica. SST is very slightly down.

I’ll show here the ENSO comparison with 1997/8. 2015/6 is similar in pattern to 1997/8, but nearly 0.5°C warmer. If the pattern continues, the peak warmth may continue till August or so. The plot is in the style of this post, which I’ll update from time to time.

I agree that internet porn is too available and kids with access to the internet just have to click on ‘yes I am 18’ even if they are 13 or whatever. Kids under 13 really need supervision not just from porn but also from mass killing ‘games’ without consequences, and road racing equivalents . I say ‘equivalents’ because an 11 year old told me recently that he knows how to drive. From video games. Yeah right. 212km/hr on the Hutt Rd anyone.

Gone are the days of mail order videos or sneaking into a shop in K Road or equivalent location. It is immediately available e.g. on a phone at a bus stop. Watching porn is no substitute for a real relationship but Willis has been married 8 years ago and only stopped the porn 2 and bit years ago. On the first 2 years of marriage/relationship they should be going at it like cobblers elbows. Is the wider issue something else e.g. heavy drinking can be a cover for repressed homosexuality.

A few years ago my son arrived in the UK on his O.E. He was questioned by this rabid female in immigration who accused him of being a foreigner who was there to take jobs off honest British citizens. This lovely lady was dark as the ace of spades and from some African country who I am certain did not spill blood for Mother England. My son has 5 relations who are buried in France and Egypt fighting for these pricks. That’s why I voted for a change in the flag to remove that bloody Union Jack.

That’s why I voted for a change in the flag to remove that bloody Union Jack.

How some of the old-timers would cope without a wee fun-size Union Jack there I don’t know. Flag change helpline. Dunedin man’s 72 Ford GT confiscated after ‘sustained loss of traction

A Dunedin man lost his appeal and his 72 Ford GT.

Donald John McLean was convicted on a charge of sustained loss of traction in the Dunedin District Court last year, and later sentenced to 70 hours community work, and disqualified from driving for a year.

On September 18, Judge Michael Turner ordered the confiscation of his car, a 1972 Ford GT.

McLean, who could not be reached for comment, estimated the car to be valued between $40,000-$100,000, with $60,000 owed to a family trust for the vehicle

McLean, who represented himself at the hearing, filed an appeal against his conviction and sentence, arguing a miscarriage of justice had occurred.

Police and Royal New Zealand Air Force staff with cannabis recovered from Marlborough during last year’s aerial operation. This year’s operation has netted about 9000 plants across the Tasman district, more the double last year’s haul.

Andrews said officers located some large commercial outdoor plots along with a number of indoor growing operations.

“It’s a success in the fact we have removed that much cannabis,” he said.

While the aerial phase has been completed, Senior Sergeant Andrews said there was still a lot of work to be done following up on information gathered and further arrests were likely.

“It’s not over just because the helicopter is no longer here,” he said.

Their President was ranting the other day about Trump. It occurred to me that had he and his cronies done a half decent job in their own country their citizens wouldn’t need/want to leave for a better country.
