Lincoln’s freeing the slaves was always going to be divisive you don’t need a PhD in history to see the results of his actions which are played out every day on the ruined and indebted streets of Chicago , Detroit and Ferguson.

Lincoln himself did not believe in equality for the freed Negro and wanted them out of his Union.

No bullshit , historic fact ,that the Establishment would prefer hidden as it does not fit the theme of the Great Emancipator.

Just after he issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, Lincoln authorized plans to pursue a freedmen’s settlement in present-day Belize and another in Guyana, both colonial possessions of Great Britain at the time, said Phillip W. I’ve been aware of that for three decades – and from standard history books. As I said, there has been no shortage of mainstream historians eager to point out flaws in Lincoln’s leadership. Nothing hidden about it at all.

You have the cart before the horse in your grasp of history, I would suggest. The division of the American Civil War was already in progress for over a year when Lincoln did so, and you can’t get more divisive than a civil war! He never ran for the presidency in 1861 on a policy of abolishing slavery – indeed he specifically disavowed it. Although the intent behind the formation of the Republican Party was, among other things, to stop the spread of the South’s ‘peculiar institution’ to the ever-expanding frontier.

The American Civil War actually started (unofficially and on a smaller scale) about 7 years before 1861, in ‘Bleeding Kansas’.

But a bit like “unconditional surrender” became the only terms the Allies offered the Axis Powers in 1945, the breath and extent of the sacrifice, and the desire to create a new order so the conflict did not repeat itself in future led Lincoln to issue the declaration of emancipation and create a post-war new order.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Here goes. Slavery is a grave evil and in my world would never have occured in the first place. No slaves , no prblem.

But having had the problem ,which they knew they had from the outset perhaps it would have been best to liberate them way back in the 1760’s (all men are created equal) and send them back to Africa or as Lincoln wanted south where they could have had their own colony.

Simple fact is the races can’t get on in the same country , too different to build a nation on.

And before I’m accused of racism I’d say the same of the French in Canada. Let them have their own country instead of forcing them into a union they don’t want to be in.

Well in perfect hindsight, yes. However, the evil compromise was needed in order to form the Union in the first place, and many people – even slaveholders such as Jefferson – thought that it was dying out, as it appeared to for two or three decades after the formation of the USA. Unfortunately the invention of the cotton gin made slavery profitable again.

But since you were willing to indulge in the hypothetical I was more interested in what you think could have been done around about 1860. A continuation of the policies of Buchanan perhaps: don’t talk about it and hope for the best? Putting my cards on the table I’d can’t think that I could have handled it any differently to how Lincoln did. I really don’t know what other assurances he could have given to the Confederate states, considering the GOP’s commitment that slavery was not going to be allowed to spread further.

Well I think that’s a pretty depressing view of humanity, and I’ve worked and lived beside too many other people of different races to think that it’s true.

Nope. Instead it would have likely died out as slavery was increasingly uneconomic. Indeed the industrial efficiency of the North over the South was the crucial factor in determining the outcome. And most Northerners hated slavery not for moral reasons, but because it undercut their free enterprise wage earning capacity on the frontier.

But then good things happening for nothing other than nasty or amoral market-driven forces is bad…right?!

Slavery in the south only possible cause of the government. Glorious government being lobbied by rich land owners.

If you lived in the south you had to spend a couple of weeks a year doing slave patrols. Spend your nights patrolling the countryside for runaway slaves.

You didn’t get paid.

Without those patrols slaves would have been able to escape north.

Even back then govt workers like milky were bought cheap.

If ya didn’t do your patrols, you got fined and were threatened with jail.

In summary – no government, no slavery.

Unions are membership organisations. A union will typically assist any member facing disciplinary action, and try to ensure that a fair process is followed. That does not mean that the union condones the behaviour in question, any more than a defence lawyer supports the criminal action of a client.

Not surprising that you don’t understand this, even though it is pretty simple.

If lots of people in the south opposed slavery, they um, might have elected state governments to abolish it. In fact, such opposition was tiny. Support for slavery was deeply entrenched in the southern states. so no surprises that those state governments seceded when they felt their institution was under threat.

think this BBC documentary reminds us how and why the Southern States abused the concept of state rights . Initially the Emancipation proclamation did give the former black slaves various political and social rights .But ti t was not long before states like Arkansas rolled them back and subjected their black population to waves of lawless terror and intimidation where lynchings were rife.. It got so bad that a a number of them sought refuge by immigrating to Liberia to escape the reign of terror . A reign of terror that was a feature in most Southern states including of course Arkansa .A very infamous and shameful episode in US and especially Southern history .

No kimbo , British law has always said we were free men.And the Bible that we were all created in God’s image. Why then should it be so hard to extend those principles to others?

Britain struggled with the legality of domestic slavery through the mid 1700’s. And it tore the US apart in the following century.

My beef is with the Establishment that seeks to rewrite history to suit its own purposes ,whatever the purpose might be.

That’s funny Shawn. You equate a church with a union. The correct analogy to the Catholic Church would be a school, or the Education Ministry, protecting pedophiles.
A union has no power to refuse to investigate, cover up a crime, ignore it, or transfer a perpetrator. These are things that an institution with authority can do.

Walker ‘gave his life to fight for our rights’

Walker died at 83. His occupation as an academic and activist wasn’t dangerous.

“Gave his life” used to be reserved for soldiers killed in war or for someone who takes enormous risk to try to save someone but loses their own life – perhaps a surf lifesaver, a fireman, or a policeman.

I have to chuckle at the MSM wetting themselves with delight at the prospect of a GOP civil war – while ignoring the tremors involved with this dicsusson from Vietnam vet and Democrat Governor, Jim Webb, who was briefly in the Democratic race for the Presidential nomination this year: Jim Webb: Won’t Vote for Hillary, Might Vote for Trump.

When asked whether he’d vote for Trump, Webb said he wasn’t closed to the idea. “I’m not sure yet. I don’t know who I’m going to vote for,” he said. “If you’re voting for Donald Trump, you may get something very good or very bad,” Webb said. “If you’re voting for Hillary Clinton, you’re going to be getting the same thing.”

But there’s no civil war inside the Democratic Party this year. No sirree.
